Stopped in here on a beautiful First Friday in September. The weather was just perfect, and this is a fave place of my sister. We checked out the extensive happy hour menu and ordered our cocktails. I had my first ever Aperol spritzer, which has been on my "want to try" list for some time! Our server was very friendly and efficient! We ordered the happy hour oysters ($1 each!), and you really can't go wrong with that! They weren't the best oysters I've ever had, but they certainly weren't the worst! Great ambiance, great raw bar selection, great craft cocktails and in an excellent location.

Initially we were going to eat dinner at this establishment, but arrived ahead of schedule, so lunch was obvious. Very limited menu, nothing out of the ordinary... such as grilled cheese and tomato bisque soup, accompanied with a spring salad. Not normally what I would order, but the other selections did absolutely nothing to entice my taste buds. Tomato soup had too much cream and was bland for my taste and the melted cheese was squished between burnt brioche bread. Even though the salad was simple, it was the only star on the plate. By far, the dinner selections sound much better and who knows... maybe someday we might give that a whirl. read more

We visited Village Square around New Years Eve this year. When we walked in, it was not very welcoming and it took a very long time for anyone to notice that we were there. They finally came to take my drink order and my wine glass was FILTHY. It took a while but we were finally served rolls which were frozen solid in the middle. We did eventually get our entrees which, out of 5 of us, only one of us thought it was better than sub par. We left there so disappointed because we had heard nothing but great things about it and we were saving our gift certificates so that we could have a special occasion and take our adult children and their significant others. Went for brunch. Overall food was tasty. Service was extremely slow! All servers seemed to be between 16-18 years old, unable to serve alcohol. The penny bottomless mimosas and bloody Mary's required you to go to the bar for service. Not convenient when you are sitting on the farthest other side of the restaurant. A new change from my last visit a year ago! Service was so slow had to find someone else to checkout. Will not be returning anytime soon! read more

The food is not typical for this area. It's made with love and you can taste it. We had the scallops, steak, fried green tomatoes split a salad and dessert. Cocktails scrumptious and beer ice cold. Server very attentive and never let our glasses of ice water empty. It feels pretty private in the booth, it is not overly lighted. Just a comfortable, enjoyable dinner experience. Have been here three times over a 8-10 year period of time and tried several different items on the menu. Nothing has changed. It is a bit expensive, but worth every penny. Enjoy! read more

The outdoor patio was lovely and great Moctails. Our waiter was great but the food was very disappointing. The salad had no flavor, and when i added 4 small slices of tuna it was 20.00 for a 1/2 plate. Bread was extra and didn't come with butter. Burger was 15.00 and not great either. read more

My family and I LOVE Village Square! It is our favorite "nice" restaurant in Winchester, VA. Consistently great food and great service. Their food is always prepared with such care. You neve know what your going to get. Sometimes it's very good other times not so much. Last night a little embarrassing. 2 burgers that were "mealy, and fell apart. Our guest ate about 1/3 of it.I had crab cakes they had very little crab, about the size of a small apple and had some horrible "cream of chicken" stuff poured over the top....36.00! The chicken that my husband ordered looked over cooked and was rubbery . No one ever asked how it was or anything, never returned to as if we'd like another drink. This is what my mother would call, a "grown-up bar." When I hear the words "piano bar" I automatically think of the dueling pianos, Billy Joel and Journey songs, buckets of beer, men with their backwards caps. And I'll admit, I LOVE bars like this. This piano bar has none of the above, except for the piano. An older gentleman was improvising jazz piano and reminded me a lot of my theory teacher, Mr. Johnson (one of my greatest teachers ever) from undergrad. They have a lengthy martini list, which makes this bar even better. I tried the one called pink lace, which was strawberry something, raspberry something, and champagne. I think they were $10 each, which is reasonable. The bar/lounge area has an assortment of couches and chairs. I can't say anything about the food since I only went for drinks, but there are dining areas further back or you can choose to forgo hearing the beautiful music and sit outside with the crowds of people walking by. read more

I have to agree with Lucy almost down to every detail (except, I would give it 3.5 stars instead of 3.75). I hate to write, "what she said, what she said, what she said"... but I'm afraid that it is quite applicable in this situation; even down to the duck. This visit was 5 months after Lucy's visit and nothing seems to have changed for the restaurant. I will say the soup de jour was quite tasty and not over priced for the wonderful flavor that it had, I remember the enjoyment it brought me even if I couldn't tell you what was in it a week later. The Bread Pudding that I had for dessert was very tasty, but it was Shortcake and not bread, I can only imagine that if it had been topped with Strawberries I would have enjoyed it a lot more! Again, this is a short review, but remember; FIVE MONTHS LATER and Lucy's original review is still perfectly fitting. It would appear to be a stagnated restaurant with no innovation other than opening with a great atmosphere in a great location a few years ago. read more

We came down here on a Sunday morning after our initial breakfast option was a bust. We strolled down the walking mall just finding anything that was open (not much open for brunch downtown on a Sunday). We looked at VS brunch menu posted outside and decided this was it. When we walked in they greeted us and said they didn't open till 11:30- it was 11:18, but they assured us they had a table for us even though they had many reservations at 11:30. They seated us and got us started with drinks and coffee since the kitchen wasn't quite ready for orders yet. They were so nice and accommodating. I had the fried green tomato eggs Benedict; instead Of the English muffin, it was friend green tomatoes. Very tasty! The poached egg was perfect and the hollandaise was also spot on. My husband doesn't like fried green tomatoes and they accommodated him with the traditional English muffin. All the food and drink was great and the servers were all wonderful. Eww, will not be back here again. You walk into the restaurant area and it smells like fish, not in a good way. But we figured well, it's an oyster place, it's gonna have a little funk when doors and windows are closed. I wish we had left at that point. Oh my god, me and my mom felt so sick after eating at this place. Maybe it's what we ordered, we shared our dishes half and half so I'm not sure what was the culprit. She got the fried oysters, and I got the Reuben with pastrami (they also offer a turkey Reuben). The oysters were so-so. The Reuben was a joke. It was all cheese and sauerkraut, barely any pastrami at all. Just greasy. I actually opened the sandwich after the first couple bites because I thought they accidentally gave me turkey because there was no pastrami. Holy cow, they were really cheap with the pastrami! Speaking of cheap, their menu has this bordered section saying substitutions are not allowed, but if you do substitute, there's a $2 charge. That's fine, but if you're a fine dining restaurant, take that bordered statement off your menu. You look like a 24-hour diner. I only wish your food was as good as a diner. read more

My husband and I enjoyed a delicious dinner on their back patio Saturday nite. Lovely space! The lobster deviled eggs were yummy as well as the kale salad that had the perfect balance of sweetness with the tart kale. The catfish special was amazing with creamy risotto and perfectly cooked asparagus. Don't forget desert- the pineapple rum cake was our favorite. Pecan Crusted Salmon - 3.5/5 - lightly crusted salmon, a teeny bit more cooked than i prefer. Love the creamed corn cause i like sweet. Nice to have some crab with it. Would have preferred more haricort vert. Tomato coulis was a light tomato sauce that was drizzled over it. I ordered more of it on the side for the salmon. Ribeye - 3.5/5 - ordered medium but was pretty rare in some parts of the middle. Wasn't super buttery which is good. Mushroom sauce is on point. Service - 5/5 - def the best part. Very nice atmosphere. Just had a casual dinner. Had the Fried Green Tomato Caprese Salad to start. It sounded different. It was very good. We ate in the bar area with the piano player-very good by the way, and I could still watch the game on the bar tv. The burger and fries were good too. This place used to be a unique martini place with an urban city like setting with deep leather chairs, piano music (that was a long tome ago, I know) sofas and a really cool place to stop by for a drink. We stopped by today and found that the management has changed it all, and they have of course their reasons and rights to do so. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and still a nice place if you want a basic and regular place to hang out. Their drink menu, which have no prices listed, has one only one martini option, so I opted for the traditional "old fashion" drink. Again, the drinks menu has no prices listed. $ 18.00 plus tax and tip - for a large ice cube and 2 ounces of a poorly made drink later I decided, again, that this place is not for me. read more

Absolutely excellent experience here! The wait staff did a great job of taking care of our needs and ensuing our dining experience was great. The food was excellent. I got a steak which was cooked perfectly. We tried three different desserts and all of them were great too! I'd highly recommend Village Square. On January 29 I went to the Village Square for lunch,as usual I was underwhelmed!!!!first of all the manager;always with a flare for attitude motioned to me with his finger if I was alone,this is the same manager who on a previous visit when I asked for a water refill responded by informing me he will tell my server to refill the water glass. I had blackened salmon Caesar salad,while the greens were fresh and the dressing very good,the salmon was a miserable piece,over cooked and good portion of it had blood veins...I ate it because I was hungry and the server(who was attentive) quality check was untimely...the manager with an attitude was no where to be found and another person who I assume to be the owner was on the phone. Great food, the Sous Chef was in this evening and the sauces were 100% spot on. Very fresh ingredients you can taste the flavors in every bite. The crab soup was incredible. The calamari wasn't heavily breaded and the sauce was something you eat with a spoon. The steaks were perfectly cooked and the sides appeared to made to order. And a boot to add the cocktails were too yummy. Highly recommend the French 75, not too sweet and not to tart. And to make the dinner perfect the service was as good as any 5 Star restaurant.
