    Good bar choices
    Bill S.

It's been a dozen years since we last dined here. We've changed a tad during that period, and so have they. We'll spare you the personal stuff and focus on the Taven. Here's what doesn't seem to have changed: it's an attractive, slightly out-of-the-way dining spot that has a very nice bar, comfy seating on a patio and inside, good servers (thank you Heather!), and a menu with a lot of tasty choices. We continue to recommend it, although hesitantly. There have been some changes, in our opinion, that left us just a little disappointed, hence four stars not five. Blackened salmon: pretty good but not much blackened and just a little bit dry. Seafood poblano with clams and scallops: excellent, well seasoned. Calamari: Crunchy but much too chewy. Yummy spinach, a crab cake that tasted bland. Sourdough bread wasn't warm and left us wanting. Fine bar choices with local beers. The romaine salad was, well, unusual, with a blueberry vinaigrette that was awfully sweet for our taste and, frankly, kind of hard to cut. Final verdict? Not quite up to what we hoped for after our experience a dozen years ago. Maybe that's us; memory can be tricky. But we came away not quite as happy as the last time for sure and a little more cautious in recommending the restaurant. If you're curious, entree prices generally in the $30s, appetizers $12-20, cocktails around 12-15. We're giving the Tavern four stars, but 3.5 would be closer to our preference.

Linguini with seafood and poblano cream sauce

My family went in for brunch and it was good food! The service was great and the atmosphere inside was really lovely. Definitely a nice restaurant. We got the crab cakes for appetizers and they were really delicious. I did bite down on a bone inside. For my entree, I got the Atlantic salmon with garlic and ginger mashed potatoes. It was delicious! The rest of my family got the cheddar burger, linguini with seafood and poblano cream sauce, and the spaghetti with meatballs. My mom got the Mark's mule and it was delicious! I think the presentation could be heightened a little in comparison to how nice the restaurant is. There also were no vegetarian options outside of the appetizer-sized salads. Overall, we had a good time!

    Fatty beef at Village Tavern.

We've been to the Village Tavern several times and it's always been great.... Except a few days ago. I ordered braised short ribs. I've had this a couple times before. I hardly ever eat beef so I figured I'd try it again. It has always been excellent. Not this time. There was so much fat it was ridiculous. If you didn't see it before putting it in your mouth you'd have little balls of fat in your mouth. Snd couldn't really spit it out. $42.00 and IT WAS Gross!!. Mashed potatoes were cold but were replaced with lukewarm ones.I'll NEVER order this again if I go back. Other parties really liked the burgers and said they would go back. Giving a rating of 3 out of 5 - maybe it was just a bad piece of beef.

Great food and lots of it. Roasted beets were great. Short rib is super hearty. I had it with Brussels sprouts. Nice combo.

I am happy to say for our family it is back. We went tonight and the food was really good and really well priced. We had the chicken wings, haddock chowder and fish and chips all were really tasty. But this is going to to sound weird. The cole slaw was the best I think I have ever had. I love mayo but this was not the mayo heavy type. The floors were refinished, so now the pub and restaurant are all in the same big room. Some of the same staff is still there, though some key people were missing: the Irish bartender and the marvelous hostess who always greeted us with a warm smile. The menu was similar, with a few new items. I ordered the sweet potato soup (needed salt, not on table)and the salmon pinwheel, amazing flavor and cooked to perfection. My husband had the baked haddock, too lemony and salty. The potatoes were bland. There was an obnoxious man at an adjacent table, who was a tad inebriated and spoke too loudly. The staff seemed to know him and didn't seem to mind his awful behavior. He ruined my meal with my husband. So.....the food is good, but depends on what you order. Be careful where you sit. Need to work on consistency and hire more help!

The menu (as far as I could tell) changes frequently, and it features several vegetarian dishes and small plates, in addition to other mains. The drink menu had some really fun offerings, and both cocktails were got were delicious. The food was very good as well, but nothing that blew us away. We were disappointed that they sat us in a different part of the restaurant than we reserved, which felt odd considering we specifically had to choose which area we were reserving a table in and it wasn't a busy night, but it was no big deal at all. All around was a great experience and we will return.

We made…read morea reservation at The White Barn Inn Restaurant about a month in advance to celebrate my birthday, noting both the occasion and a simple seating request due to my husband's height. Upon arrival, we were initially seated in what felt more like a brightly lit, casual tavern or breakfast room, completely at odds with the refined dining experience we expected. Surrounded by families and very casual attire, it was confusing and frankly off-putting. After asking the host stand, we were eventually moved to the actual dining room, which was beautiful - dim, elegant, and exactly the ambiance we had hoped for. Service throughout the evening was polished and professional, and every dish was plated beautifully. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. While we understand that tasting menus consist of smaller portions, each course, just two or three bites, was entirely forgettable. The flavors lacked balance and subtlety, which is surprising at this price point. The beef tartare in a cigar like wrapper was very mid. One of my early courses was a scallop dish, and the scallops were cooked so poorly they were the rubberiest I've ever had (an immediate red flag in a restaurant of this caliber). My main course, a tenderloin, arrived as an overcooked end piece. After sending it back and requesting rare, it returned slightly less well done, still an end cut, and completely overwhelmed by a salty, heavy red wine demi-glace that tasted more like something from a packet than a refined sauce. It was one of the least appetizing beef dishes I have perhaps ever had. The cheese plate featured Great Hill Blue which some might love but is available at my local Stop & Shop so didn't really knock my socks off, a boring cheddar and a third cheese I can't even recall. At a restaurant of this caliber, I was expecting a much more curated collection of exciting, super, stinky cheeses that one could not find at a chain grocery store. At nearly $700 for two people (with a few drinks and a multi-course menu), the experience simply did not come close to justifying the cost. The following night, we had a $200 dinner at Chez Rosa, the Little French bisto in downtown Kennebunkport. The meal there FAR surpassed this meal in both flavor and execution. Based on our experience--and what seems to be echoed in more recent reviews--the quality of the food here no longer matches its reputation or price point. This was meant to be a special occasion destination, but instead left us feeling frustrated and genuinely let down.

The service was quite nice, it truly was a unique experience. I give it 4 stars simply because for the price, I'd expect everything to be perfect and there was on item in the tasting the neither myself nor my partner enjoyed as it tasted a little undercooked - it involved Lima beans. Other than that, I highly recommend this spot. Not a great place for kids. Dress nice and know that parking is easy. Settle in and enjoy a unique experience in a very pleasant ambiance.
