Villon was our dinner destination of choice by one of my most thoughtful friends and fellow Yelper, Terry K. Terry flew out to San Francisco for a short visit to celebrate my birthday. We all had a lovely, memorable, and exceptional dining experience at Villon! My friend made reservations for us and we arrived earlier than anticipated. They were kind enough to seat us early. We came on a weekday after I got off work and the restaurant was pretty relaxed. Villon is modern yet elegant emulating the business casual vibes of downtown San Francisco. Service is on par with the ambiance--friendly, accommodating, and formal. We were checked on and they graciously treated us to birthday desserts. We came around dinner time and glanced through their dinner menu. They offer small plates, soups and salads, entrees, and a table-side menu. Plus an extensive drink menu! We chose to eat and order family style. We ordered: Sea Urchin Toast, Octopus, Beef Tartare, and Parker House Rolls for appetizers. My favorite was the sea urchin toast it was creamy, lightly sweet, and crunchy. The octopus was well-cooked with a savory spicy sauce and the rolls had intricate seaweed butter. We chose to share the Halibut and Pork Katsu as our entrees. Both were beautifully presented, cooked to perfection, moist, and well seasoned. Out of the two, the halibut was my favorite. I'm curious about their afternoon tea and brunch menu, as it also seems popular! If you're downtown and want a different scene or experience, Villon is a remarkable option. The restaurant serves New American cuisine within the Proper Hotel off Market Street. They do validate and there's street parking and public transportation. I would've never come here if it weren't for my special friend, Terry K. This a perfect place to celebrate with some of my closest friends.

My montra- "Good food, Good fellowship, Good friends". That said, let me describe Villon (pronounced Vi Yon), a very unassuming restaurant on the first floor of the Prospect Hotel on Market; smack in the center of downtown San Francisco near Union Square. Villon is a relatively new restaurant that came to life by Michelin Star Chef Jason Fox. The serve breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner. Dimly lit atmosphere with an outstanding bar area is Villon that seats about 50 people tops all at the same seating. The service was excellent starting at check in. We were a tad early but they were able to seat is immediately. No sooner than our seating came our waiter James who took our adult beverage orders and gave us moments to peruse the menu. A touch of class! Amuse bouche came soon after our order was placed. We chose to dine" family style" meaning we ordered several dishes and we would try each and all of the dishes. That said, we had octopus, beef tartare, Uni Toast. (Note- my best was the octopus). For entree's we ordered Pork Katsu and Halibut. A word of caution is the pork katsu is fairly large and it fed three of us and we had take home of it. The halibut was nicely prepared. It was moist and the sauces surrounding it was tasty. A touch of class for the home run! The gave us dessert since we were celebrating our friend's birthday. They brought a chocolate cake/parfait and Baked Alaska. How cool is that? I was impressed with everything of this Establishment including their price point of the food. I look forward to my next visit; maybe next time I'll do afternoon tea. Points to consider: 1) Hotel parking and Valet Parking available for $24 per hour (SFO residents should use the public transportation) Food portions are large so sharing plates go well here. Villon's POS is Open Table; you can make your reservations there. Happy Birthday Kyra Fun Fact- Michelin Star Chef Jason Fox had Restaurant Commonwealth in the Mission District for nearly 10 years. Today he has this unassuming restaurant known as Villon. Do make time for a visit.

Absolutely fabulous meal. I made sure to wait until the buzz from their delicious cocktails wore off to write this review, lest it color my review and even in my tragically sober state, I still love the meal (and the leftovers we took home). Read about it in SF magazine and was drawn to it because of their description of the interior decor (which is beautifully done - art deco?). The cool interior of the hotel is like a fun art museum (with all local artists) and the restaurants design did not disappoint. The halibut was delicious, with a glaze I've never seen done quite as well on fish. My pork tonkatsu was tender and perfect, well complemented by the Shishido peppers, fresh herbs and light coleslaw. The service was easily one of my best dining experiences in San Francisco. The staff is friendly, very knowledgeable and incredibly down to earth and approachable. Will definitely plan on coming back. P.S. our terrific waiter was kind enough to help make a reservation upstairs on the rooftop bar afterwards for some drinks, which I also recommend checking out.

Afternoon Tea - Sandwiches for Four

My friends surprised me with a fantastic afternoon tea at Villon during a Friday afternoon. As others have mentioned, they do have an afternoon tea on Fridays and Saturdays from 2pm-5pm, and again on Sundays from 2pm-7pm. After checking in with the host, by the entrance of the bar/restaurant area, we were promptly shown our table, which was able to comfortably sit 6, that was towards a wall of the hallway, between the main entrance and a side entrance. She promptly took the 'reserved' sign off and told us our server will be with us, shortly. Before she departed, we informed her that our reservation had two notes: 1) we had a vegetarian and thus wanted to ensure that the sandwiches reflected that and 2) we had a birthday (me) in the party. She confirmed that they were aware. It took a while before our server arrived. We had selected our tea, but didn't pay too much mind since we were enjoying conversation and admiring the themed décor of the hotel. Before the server's arrival, I took a visit to the restroom, which was downstairs of the lobby, and noticed it was very nice too. They had a main men and women's restroom area and the handwashing stations were co-ed. The handwashing stations also had nice Aesop soap and lotion (scented). Going back to the good stuff - There was a small selection of teas available (Black, Green, Botanical, and White). The selection were each very distinct, aromatic, and delightful. I decided to choose the Golden Horse Black Team, as it had notes of Honey, Caramel, and Crème Brulee. Not sure if my palate was able to distinguish between all those notes, but it was quite enjoyable. One of my best friends ordered the Yin Hao Jasmine Green Tea. As suggested, it was very smooth and fragrant. Our other friend ended up getting the Ikebana Botanical Tea. After we all took turns smelling it, we decided that the 'Peppery-ness' almost resembled oregano. The finger sandwiches quickly arrived after our tea. There were 4 to choose from - Salmon Crepe Sandwich, Egg Salad Sandwich, Cream Cheese and Jam Sandwich, and a Cucumber Pesto Sandwich. I ended up trading my Egg Salad Sandwich (my best friend's favorite among the selection) for a Salmon Crepe Sandwich (my favorite among the selection). I was almost expecting them to provide an alternative sandwich though, but cut in fours, maybe they didn't accommodate that. The dessert/scone section arrived after the sandwiches, which felt a little out of place. We did note that it was presented that way on the menu, so it was definitely deliberate. Shortly before, our teas were refilled with hot water, and we were served 2 trays for our party of 4. The food runner, who had provided us refills, explained the selection. Along the top tier (see photo), we had the lavender macaron, a rose petite four, and an unsweetened cocoa crème puff. On the bottom tier there was a butter drenched croissant, an apricot muffin, a brownie, and a marshmallow piece. I made the foolish decision to break the butter filled croissant, advertised as a petite croissant, with my hands and had oil on them the remainder of this course. It was good, but we all agreed that it was an absurd amount of butter compared to the size of this pastry. We also noted that it was curious that they provided the crème fraiche, fresh jam, and lemon curd without having an actual scone for this course. I still took the opportunity to use each one with my croissant. Pretty light and good, as it should be. More mild than I thought. Overall, it was a phenomenal experience. I would highly suggest coming here for an occasion. My favorite course were the tea sandwiches. The desserts were all distinct and special in their own way. Definitely one of the more memorable afternoon tea experiences.

Been here a few times...checked in 5 times according to Yelp! And I'm never disappointed with the service or food. Definitely my go to place whenever I'm in the city. Thanks Villon for always being consistent and for pleasing our palates with your updated menu items! Always a pleasure to show you off to my family and friends! Keep it up! Looking forward to my next visit!

This review is for the high tea service! Service was very nice and it was very cute, but for the price, I wanted to try more than one tea and we only get one flavor each (with unlimited hot water refills). That wasn't made clear to us in the beginning. Also, the sandwiches were tiny - you get a bite of each flavor instead of like a half sandwich - it seems like you get less than a quarter size of a sandwich for each flavor - and I sadly came hungry! Sweets were good but I'm more of a savory person. My friends loved the scone.

When looking for a place to eat dinner, I had been looking for somewhere that had innovative food. This restaurant accomplished that and did a wonderful job of making interesting and tasteful dishes. My group and I ordered the Chef's menu (which was very well priced) and all of the pairings that went with it. All of the dishes felt very artfully prepared and went well together. The portions were adequate and not too overdone so that the next course could still be eaten. The staff were very kind and accommodating, and made a substitution on the tasting menu when a member of our group couldn't have fish. Walking into the Proper Hotel felt like it fit well with the tone of the overall neighborhood, and was well done inside. Villon itself is a small space in the hotel that fits with the overall mood of the hotel and still feels like an upscale place to eat.

Came here for lunch. It was a bit slow but the food was good. The sparkling water was $11 for a bottle which seems very overpriced for SF. Food: Banana bread - delicious Roasted chicken - ok Beef tartare - delicious

Enter on McAllister. Went here at 6:30pm on a Wednesday and we got seated immediately (table for 2). Service was great! He was quick to address our needs and our water was never empty. Lots of alcohol options. Petite seafood tower: this was really good, but I wouldn't call it a tower. More like a petite seafood platter. The oysters and the salmon rillette was our favorite! The bread you eat with the rillette really made it much better, but alone, the rillette was good. The Oysters were sweet and yummy. OCTOPUS, FERMENTED CHILI PORK BROTH: this was delicious! It only came with one tentacle, but it was perfectly grilled and had a lot of vegetables with it. SCALLOP & SHRIMP ROLL DIM SUM: not our favorite. It was one roll cut in half. I didn't care for the texture. It was too jelly-like. The wrap is made of scallop and the shrimp was wrapped in it. BEEF TARTARE, ASIAN PEAR KIMCHEE: this was super good! Well seasoned. Crostini is perfectly crisp. I rated this place 4 stars because: -limited seats -where to check in for a table wasn't obvious. We had to flag someone down. -super dark ambiance -I wish there were more food selections on the menu.

Mussels & Chorizo (5/5) Cheeseburger with Bacon & Avocado (5/5)

We came here on New Year's Day and was able to make reservations on OpenTable for 2pm! They are located in the Prosper hotel on 1100 Market, and their valet is on the McAllister side. The area is a little sketchy, but the crackheads in the area are harmless for the most part. Not sure if it was because it was New Year's Day and the staff spent NYE going HAM, but service was a little discombobulated. We were handed menus that didn't not include the regular menu. We were handed the prix fixe NYE menu. One of the servers poured water for us, but she poured my water in the coffee mug instead of the water glass. Nonetheless, the food made up for the weird experience upon arrival. Mussels & Chorizo (5/5) Soooo good! The mussels were big and juicy and they sure did not skimp on portion size. Crispy potatoes were a great compliment and served with green beans, celery, and sour cream. The white wine sauce was phenomenal and the whole dish tied together very well. Cheeseburger with Bacon and Avocado (5/5) Perfectly cooked medium rare patty, perfectly toasted sesame bun, and perfectly charred bacon served with fries and homemade ketchup. Coffee (5/5) Coffee was good as well. I think I liked it because of the chicory, which made me miss New Orleans. Food and overall ambiance made the dining experience very pleasant. I look forward to coming back someday!

(March 2021) Brunch weekend menu 8am-2pm

===TL;DR=== - located INSIDE San Francisco Hotel (after you get in, all the way down to your left) - Parking will be a challenge especially around this neighborhood - Checks ID + vaccination card before entering - Reservation recommended - Brunch Weekend: 8-2pm - The continental breakfast - Japanese breakfast - Ordered a custom cocktail: whiskey sour ===TMI=== I have been deceived all these years here in SF, how did I miss this gem? Don't let the exterior of this place + the location fool you - you won't want to miss out on this place. Kindly greeted by this gentlemen who held the door open for me to enter (who still does that nowadays?) the restaurant wasn't hard to locate, all the way down to your left. You know you found it when their beautiful bar just stares at you. Already in awe the moment I stepped in. For someone who loves details, this place will check off those satisfactions. Every nooks and crannies of this hotel has such a difference vibe, ambiance. The restaurant gives a light and airy, calm vibe, the lounge area is like a mid century modern theme.. and even the restroom downstairs (you know they're boujee when they use Aesop as hand soaps) is like a dark, dim-lit moody twist. Interior designs are chefs-kiss. Onto the food. Got a reservation at 1pm since there were no more availability after - brunch menu. Luckily we stayed there for some time so we ask if we can also do the afternoon tea, they said ok! Woohoo! For the brunch portion, the Japanese brunch's pork belly were so good. Lightly zested with yuzu or lemon I assume and they helped cut into the fattier section so well. The charred vegetable really helped me cleanse my palette as I kept eating - overall, loved it. It also comes with a whole jug of jasmine tea - how delightful. Their cocktail menu didn't peaked my interest so I opted for a custom order of whiskey sour w/o egg whites - the serve was really nice and friendly. Fast forward to the afternoon tea part - $45 per person or $60/ pp for the glass of sparkling wine option. Opted for the $45 tasting. Each person can pick their own choice of tea & you can try other teas free of charge whenever you want to switch it out (A+ since other places typically charge you extra). I tried the Aged white peony and man, it was a good size teapot. Did I mention they use tea strainers? -precious eyes- makes me reminisce London. I didn't switch to try any other teas since I didn't want to waste a good jug of it so next time! Onto the bites - sandwiches comes first and the tiers of sweets comes after. Everything was delicious and it was such a good portion. I think I can stare at this place forever. Literally chilled here and chit chatted from afternoon till dawn... and didn't even notice time passed. Attempted to go to the rooftop bar after but they were full so until next time! (FYI, if you're not a hotel guest, you will have to exit the hotel, and it's the first door to your right to assess the bar upstairs).

Amazing interior and service! Delicious food on top of all beauty! We got there for lunch next day after Thanksgiving and really enjoyed! I ordered Carolina Gold Grits and it was really good and delicious. Others ordered Proper Cheeseburger which was really really delicious! So everything was great! I recommend the beautiful restaurant!

The interior is very modern with lots of warm lightning across the 2 floors; the downstairs has a bar area with a cute wall of alchohol. We got the $139 pp tasting menu and it was 3 courses with little dishes per course; definitely got to try a variety of foods but I wish portions were a bit bigger. We also got the Baijiu Milk Punch and Makrut Lime Fizz for drinks; both were on the sweeter side and kind of tasted the same. The Milk Punch highkey came in such a small cup and it look like just water LOL. The tasting menu included: - BBQ Shortrib (4/5 meat was tender but honestly, the hot mustard saved this dish because it balanced out the sweetness of the bbq; if it didn't have the sauce, it would be a 3/5 for me) - Watermelon salad (2/5 not like impressed by this, moreso I'm confused why this would be $19 on the regular menu) - Smoked Early Girl Tomato (4/5 the shiso green goddess was yummy) - Koshihikari Fried Rice (1/5 this was lowkey kinda bad like why were the beans the most flavorful thing in this dish; I feel like they just threw a bunch of veggies together and called it a day) - Burrata (3/5 alright I did not even realize there was scallion pancake) - Uni Toast (3/5 bread was very oily/crunchy; I like Bansang's Uni Toast more) - Osetra Caviar (4/5 very unique I've never seen caviar on banana bread, bread was thick and moist AND outside was like seared w butter - Hog Island Osyter (3/5 just ok) - Sushi RIce (3/5 also just ok, just ur normal ikura handroll) - Chilled Squid (4/5 yummy + unique especially the green curry) - Bluefin Tuna Carpaccio (4/5 also yummy & fresh but was literally one bite LOL) - Parker House Rolls (3/5 idk why I thought the butter would be sweet but no, it was mega salty LOL) - For dessert, we asked them to give us the $99 menu's dessert which was the Hazelnut Soft Serve Sundae; they did bring out chocolate and drizzled it all over the ice cream but that wasn't very tasty/special. Also a 3/5. The only thing from the menu that I did wish that we tried was the Buffalo Hamachi Collar but was this worth $35, I'm not sure... Service was fast and friendly! It's super cute that all of their staff wear panda dunks. Overall, we spent $420~ and I probably wouldn't come back. I see what they're trying to do with the Asian inspired & seafood menu but I don't think it's a must try in SF.

Savory yet delicate enough to not weigh us down right at the beginning of our meal. The horseradish aioli wasn't for me, but I can see its appeal for a certain audience. You give me a Calabrian chili sauce and it's guaranteed to make me happy and this shrimp with sweet corn was no exception. Again, light but a punchy flavor that was enjoyable. I could go on and on about the different dishes we tried but the real standout of the night was the pork tenderloin with chorizo and peaches. The sweetness from the peaches somehow managed to enhance the flavor of the chorizo. This dish gives you a bold, savory and sweet bite all together but still won't have you feeling super heavy. The portion size is perfect. Im hoping to return soon for another exquisite meal.

Service was great, good cadence of food coming out though slowed at the end when they accidentally forgot our fried chicken but our party was honestly so busy yapping we weren't that bothered but then they comped it! The space is so lovely, huge windows letting in a lot of natural light, and a fun disco ball perched at the top. We were seated on a table at the upstairs section overlooking the whole space and I loved it -- quieter and you can really admire the whole space. Parking is tough (mostly street parking but should be free after 6pm) so I'd recommend trying to find it on side streets off of Divisadero. - Favorites: Yaya's fried chicken, Smoked trout pan con tomate - Honorable mentions: Country pork chop, Brisket agnolotti - Notes: Yaya's fried chicken is perfectly fried/crispy and drizzling the chili honey on is *chef's kiss*, Nopa Cheeseburger is pretty thick, Smoked trout pan con tomate comes with 2 pieces so would order it so each person gets 1 piece (also it's so flavorful you'll each want one) Everything ordered: - Summer melon salad: musk melon, Feather River Farm watermelon, kalamata olive, sungold tomato, purslane and ricotta salad - Smoked trout pan con tomate: early girl tomato vinaigrette, Suncatcher jewel tomatoes and grilled levain - Brisket agnolotti: hand made pasta, mushrooms, port roasted figs and pecorino - Braised lamb: Emigh Ranch lamb, pearl couscous, fennel peperonata, Castelvetrano olives and tzatziki - Flatbread: house cured coppa, thyme, yellow nectarine, gruyère and aged balsamic - Yaya's fried chicken: Moroccan spiced, buttermilk brined and double dredged, house pickles and a side of chili honey - Tagliatelle: house made egg noodles, nine hour bolognese, swiss chard and parmesan - Country pork chop: brown butter spaetzle, house fermented sauerkraut and dill - Nopa Cheeseburger: grass fed Stemple Creek beef ground daily, house baked brioche bun, pickled onions, Kennebec french fries and basil parmesan aïoli - Nectarine crostata: almond cookie crumble, blueberry jam and sweet corn ice cream

The Little Gems salad with persimmon was the standout (though heavily dressed), and the malted chocolate ice cream made for a great finish. However, the mains fell short: the tagliatelle bolognese was bland, the duck lacked crispy skin, and the fries tasted basic without any chef's twist. Glad we got to try this SF spot at a discount, but it's a one-and-done for us.

3.5 STARS All-4-One…read more Soul For Real. SWV. Tevin Campbell. My Geriatric Millennial heart was SO happy! From now until October, Timbri Hotel's rooftop bar: Rise Over Run is hosting R&B Wednesdays. Rezzies are highly recommended. Book a table at the garden patio - IMO, it's the best seats in the house. Ok, yea it's in the TL right off 6th/Market....not in the nicest area. IMO, the TL is not as bad as some make it to be. In my experience being born and raised in the city, people in the TL say "Hi" and keep to themselves. M E N U Small New American Menu: Small bites (salad, deviled eggs, mini crab rolls, etc), spreads w/ pita bread, burger, fried chicken, fish & chips, steak frites, etc. They advertise food and drink specials for the event but there was none. No HH either. 5% SF surcharge (not noted on menu). D R I N K S Limited spirit selection; wish they carried more small-batch brands. * Grey Whale Gin, shaken ($16) * Grey Whale Gin w/ club soda ($18 x3): Very stiff! Worth the $. * Diet Coke ($5 x3) A P P S * Grilled Pork Belly Skewers w/ miso glaze, pickled mustard seeds (2 pc-$12) Rich, tender, and not overly fatty. The miso's umami didn't come through so it was a bit bland. * Smoked Salmon Rillettes w/ dill, chives, pita ($12) Umm, I'm all for negative space but could they not find a smaller bowl so the rillette doesn't look half eaten? Lol! That aside, this was BOMB! The pita tasted housemade - served piping hot and perfectly chewy with a soft, fluffy interior. Slathered with the rich, creamy smoked salmon spread...it was so delicious. * Fries ($9) Can't go wrong with a huge platter of hot McD type fries. S E R V I C E Welp, this would have been a 5 star review but someone killed the vibes. Most of the staff was friendly, and our server was excellent - very attentive and efficient with drinks and apps arriving quickly. Unfortunately, as we were on our last round of drinks (I had a full cocktail left), a male staff came over and told us they need the table back in 10 minutes, and our server immediately brought the check. I was confused esp since there were two empty tables nearby and he didn't approach the other table that was seated around the same time as us. I later found the fine print on my rezzies about the 2-hour table max which wasn't mentioned when we were seated. Regardless, we still had about 30 mins left. Afterwards, I spoke with Mia at the hotel's front desk. She was very apologetic, looked into the situation right away, and kindly offered a round of drinks on our next visit. A M B I A N C E Chic and trendy with a cute glass-enclosed solarium, and sweeping views of DT and the city's skylines. Mix of tables and lounge areas with firepits and heat lamps (it's windy tho!). Clean restrooms. It was great seeing a diverse crowd for the R&B event...a refreshing change from the usual AI/Tech Bro scene in the city. P A R K I N G Limited street parking (we found parking around the corner before 5 pm). Valet is $80. Overall, we had a great time at R&B Wednesday, and I thought the prices were fair for solid apps and drinks...for a rooftop bar. It was disappointing that our evening was cut short tho. Would love to return before it's over in October but that interaction left a bad impression.

I will say that this place is absolutely stunning and beautiful compared to a lot of others San Francisco rooftops that I have visited. This is located into the tenderloin, so please be aware that you will have to find your own street parking but parking a garage is preferred. This place has stunning views nonetheless, it's very chill and in a relaxing setting. The music is not overpowering, which is nice enough to have a conversation without having it overly crowded with 50 other people around you. I've definitely been back here a few times to take other friends and family and I will continue to do so. There are also heaters outside when it's very cold, chilly and windy. The staff is amazing as they are also willing to accommodate you and give you blankets if needed. Can't wait to go back!

I wish they would mention that their weekend morning to lunch menu is different from the one displayed on their website. I drove all the way here for the main pizzas/pastas for my birthday, but we were only limited to breakfast food and burgers on a weekend afternoon. Also, I understand that weekends get busy, but our server did not check on us at least once. They were only present to take our orders and then drop off the check. As a former server myself, I am very aware of these things. It appeared that there was some down time to check on a simple 2-top as she was walking up and down scanning the tables. I can say that this is not reflective of the previous times I've dined here as the service has always been very pleasant, and the food never disappoints. For minimum $20 per entree, you would expect the servers to check-in on how the table finds their food and whether or not there is something they can provide to make it better.
