We were looking to add AC to our house and going with Vinje & Son saved us half of what we would have normally paid for full service AC install. They're a DIY shop and they'll provide you plenty of information to get your system up and running but you will be doing a lot of the install work yourself. Final connections for the copper lines are done by a licensed tech and Vinje's will give you a referral. So long as you good with this arrangement there is a lot of money to be saved by the home owner for the same or better quality of equipment that you can get from another HVAC company. Let's just say I know an unnatural amount about energy efficiency. Did you know America's energy efficiency seriously lags the developed world? So room for improvement. Our state of Oregon has excellent programs to train and certify heating and cooling system installers. You can find out many things on that at the Energy Trust of Oregon website. But sometimes you just need to dig into a project yourself, do it inexpensively and just do a small change or forget the subsidies. After having a contractor look at my duct work in order to provide a quote for duct sealing and duct insulation. He couldn't do the test that would validate the measure for the EnergyTrust and Department of Energy credits and he explained why he didn't believe in the process. Realizing that I could do it all myself for a tenth of the cost even with the credits I decided to go out to the only place I knew about to get the materials and that place was Vinje & Son. I will be heading back when I get to the projects where I need some custom ductwork or at least the parts for me to assemble. Vince & Son is an amazing shop and an even better team! They have always taken the time to give me advice and walk me through my situation when I needed them. When our AC unit needed to be replaced they got us an amazing deal on a new unit and connected us with a super reasonable contractor to charge it up. At our current house I thought the AC unit was out too and after talking to them on the phone I was able to remove the capacitor and they sold me a replacement that I could install myself. $7.50!!!! Most contractors would sell that part for $100 and then charge to install it. It was super easy after talking to Vinje & Son's staff. Can't recommend this shop enough. UPDATE: Vinje and Son's just saved Christmas for us! Our heat stopped working today and after calling Vinje's they talked me through a simple few steps and I got or furnace working again! No money spent!! That is integrity! They easily could have used our desperate position to charge us extra, instead they just helped us. I needed to replace my old gas furnace and wanted to save money by doing the work myself. So I went to Vinje and Son in part because I didn't want to be chasing parts all over town, plus they offered to provide technical support and guidance for the DIYer. So I bought my replacement furnace there, provided them with the measurements for forming the new plenums, and received a very complete set of instructions for installation. The boxes were completed and ready to go in just a couple of days. The process went very smoothly, and I was able to complete the job in about five days. Along the way, Vinje and Son was very helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and patient in dealing with my concerns and problems. When it turned out I had mis-measured a box, they were quick to find a solution that worked. The quality of their sheet metal work was excellent, and I am very happy with the final product. My next job is to tear down my chimney and replace it with a vent stack. I plan to go to Vinje and Son for the parts and technical support when the time comes. It also helps that they have a friendly Golden Retriever that hangs out around the show room and greets customers! read more

I had such a wonderful experience with this place! My gas furnace broke, and I was having trouble affording the price that heating companies charge for replacement. I called a contractor friend of mine, and he sent me to Vinje and Sons to get help with a DIY furnace installation. I filled out the sizing sheet that's posted on their website, and went into the store to discuss my options. I worked primarily with Nate, who walked me through the different furnaces, and getting a custom piece made to fit the old ducting to my new furnace. He drew everything out for me, and gave me a price that was about $1300 less than the lowest quote I received for a company install of a less efficient furnace. When I picked everything up a couple days later, he opened up my new furnace, and showed me everything I needed to do. It was all very comfortable, and I never felt even slightly disrespected or talked down to because I'm a younger woman. Though I'm decently handy, it was my first time doing this, and it took me the whole weekend to take out my old furnace and install the new one. Slowness aside, I felt very comfortable doing the work because they had set me up so well. I'm very appreciative of all their time and help. Now I have heat! read more

I am a plumber and prefer DIY for most jobs at my own home. I needed a new furnace and set out to acquire the parts and appliances that I needed. If you've ever tried to purchase HVAC materials at wholesale you will know that it is very difficult. It is interesting that unless you are an HVAC contractor most places will not sell to you. Vinje and Son seems to know this and try to capitalize on it. Their prices far exceed full retail. I was able to find the same things online with shipping to me for a fraction of the price. I still went to Vinje for some of the smaller more specific parts and found most of what I needed. Other reviews say that they are knowledgeable and helpful but you must add "only if you purchase from them." I saved about $600.00 by purchasing my furnace on line and spent other money at Vinje and Son. When I tried to ask for clarification to a particular point in the installation manual for the furnace they said "I wouldn't know, Not my furnace." I pointed out that the furnace I was installing was identical to one in their showroom and he said again "Not my furnace." This time I understood what he was saying "You didn't buy this from me so I'm not going to help answer your question." I understand the frustration that I would purposefully try to go around his astronomical markup on the furnace and then ask him for advice. How would he make any money if everyone did that? I have an idea. Try charging a reasonable markup and offering plenty of free advice. If Vinje had been more helpful and more reasonably priced I would have no problem making this my go to shop for all of OF My HVAC needs. I would also tell customers of my own about them. Now all I'm saying is "GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!" To Vinje and his son I would recommend a book by Seth Godin called "The Linchpin" if you read this book your attitude will change and your business will prosper. read more

The install person they've been recommending for 16 years was dishonest and without integrity. After arriving at my home they said two indoor units coming off the single outdoor condenser means twice the price (even though I had mentioned this on the phone). Given that I don't know what is involved I could see where that might make sense. The installer also mentioned he would have to cancel his other appointment for the day and push it to next week because this would take so long. Ok so far, I appreciated his flexibility and his willingness to get the job done. Now imagine my surprise when after 2 hours they declare the job done. Wait...what? That made it an hourly rate of $450. And he fully expected the "agreed" upon price. Then, while climbing into the truck at 10:45 in the morning they declared they were done for the day and heading home. So much for that other appointment they had to push back. I guess because they had fleeced me they were fine calling it a day. The point of the story is - certainly DO NOT go with their recommended installer. The second point is do your research elsewhere. Given their stellar at the counter service I had been a completely loyal customer. But if this has been their recommended go-to-person for 16 years I'll be doing better research into where to purchase. read more
