I really don't know when he has time to sleep. The cool thing with Tommy is, you get a perfectionist cutting your hair as well as great conversation about the wicked streets of NYC. Felt super comfortable and was expecting to pay for price however when I was charged at the register, I was only charged a neck trim which was a nice surprise. I think I found my new barber! I don't think words could describe the feelings I have right now! The atmosphere was fantastic! All the dressers talked to their clients and had real conversations. Clean shop. They wept up after every client. Didn't push product on me like other shops do. Didn't rush the people in and out. Had to pay for parking but they have a parking lot which is crazy talk in this area of town. Michael was my scissor wielding coiffure today. (He twirled them as he cut my hair) I came with some photos and styling ideas and he immediately explained how he could make it look amazing! I also explained the colors I wanted but left it up to him to decided where they went. He and I chatted for almost the entire 3 hours. He's like family now. There's a new game in town. Well, really the game is not that new... it's actually just been changed. And the ante upped. Vinnie - long time stand-out talent at Rudy's up the street on Division has taken his shears and moved on down toward the river to open up his own shop. Gone are the days of staring at Rudy's carefully conceived decór - with the rockabilly hipster vibe. Vinnie's at the Ford is crisp, clean, and awesome. This shop has talent that extends beyond the man himself. He has formed a team of folks, many of whom have cut my hair in the past, that will provide quality service for both long and short hair, male and female. But what really matters to me is that I know I can roll in and score a cut from Vinnie himself or Scott or any of the other stylists and I'll get well shorn for the right price (same or just less than Rudy's). I won't be battling a salon price hit or uppity salon service, and at the same time I won't be risking the occasional disaster I'd get sometimes with one of the random stylists up the street. $10 for a buzz, $23 for a cut, and the prices go on up from there. I have always come from the DIY/punk school of home-made haircuts and dying my hair at home, but about a year ago I met Sam Romero and I've never looked back. She is so talented, creative and I feel so comfortable when I'm in her chair. She totally gets my style, and has come up with the BEST, coolest colors for me. She's also really amazing at translating my random ideas into literally the best hair of my life. I cannot recommend Sam enough...she will make you feel like a cooler, hotter version of yourself. Also, she's easy to be around and whether I feel chatty or quiet, she's really accommodating, which I appreciate. I went to Vinnie's twice. The first time was satisfying and I could tell the stylist was skilled. The second time the stylists in the shop seemed to be in some kind of passive-aggressive funk. There was obvious tension between them, and my previous stylist was rude and dismissive upon greeting. The new stylist ignored my concerns, rubbed hair dye directly into my scalp, and overcharged me (to a shocking degree). It's definitely not worth my time to risk whatever off-putting mood they might be in given my last experience. read more

As someone who gets haircuts 12 times a year, life's rough. I've had a lot of haircuts. You start to pick up signals for talent. My best experiences are people who have great hand feel. Confidence with sheers, as if it was a natural extension of the body. Tommy has that talent. He seems like a great guy and is a good conversationalist. I want to sing love songs about Amy Rose, sweet Disney-like lyrics set to punk rock music. Seems about right. She's quick, she's got a great eye, and she's funny as hell. If you need a stylist go see her immediately. Vinnie's is a great space. Nothing fancy, no vases of lilies with soothing music and frilly pillows, but it looks perfect for the space and building (if that makes sense). They have boy and girl stylists and they all look good, something I don't find at all shops. How can I trust you with my hair if you can't even deal with your own? They also have online booking, the biggest plus you can get. The price is great, the location is great, and the stylists are great. What more do you need? I have been here twice. First haircut was AWESOME! Second haircut (different person because first person is no longer there) not so awesome. I have curly hair and called ahead of time and asked if there was someone who is great at cutting curly hair and the receptionist said they were "all" good at cutting curly hair. If you have curly hair, you know that it is virtually impossible for a whole salon be filled with people who are exceptional at cutting curly hair. I sat down and my haircut seemed to be going well until the stylist blew my hair out straight without asking. Once it was straight, it was hard to tell if it was to my liking. I went home and immediately wet it down and dried it how i normally do it to find i didn't like it. I really don't want to go back and have the stylist re-cut it and I now have a haircut that i don't like that i'm living with until my next cut. I will probably not go back but that first haircut i had there i will always remember. The salon is absolutely beautiful though. read more

I want to tell you to go away. Don't come here. Go somewhere else. Don't fill up precious saturday slots, or drive up the cost of my do. Don't visit this gem, because I never, ever want it to change. Vinnie has saved me from some pretty horrendous situations over the past 6 years. The first being a bottle of wine and a case of the bangs, to the most recent perm debacle. I walk in, hanging my head in shame... and he laughs. But proceeds to give me the exact cut I want. One that grows out perfectly and somehow always works with the shape of my face, no matter the style. Scott just took me from red to platinum. No brass. no problem. Just exactly what I asked for. And the prices... These guys should be making twice what they charge. Yes. They are that. good. But this is a good thing for me, because I am super poor. Loving the new space. It's clean and modern. Lacking in all that shit hanging from the walls that you find at Rudy's. But there are many familiar faces, it's basically all the talent from the old shop. I'm 34. at one haircut a month thats 408 haircuts I've had in my life. I just went to vinnies for the first time today, and got the best haircut I've ever had. Thats saying a lot too. I have really weird hair and I'm used to having to work with barbers for a couple of visits before they figure out how to cut my hair because its so thick and there is so much of it. Usually I just end up with a haircut "I can live with" today I got the first hair cut I LOVE! Vinnie gave me the hair cut I always knew was in there. I popped into here at ten til 2 on a Sunday afternoon after my regular place proved way too busy for my timeframe, just on a whim after a Yelp Search. Though it took more than 5 minutes to be acknowledged upon entering, Tommy greeted me and mentioned that it would be about a 20 minute wait. He saw my face fall, as I only had less than 30 minutes free time so he asked what service I needed. I replied a quick buzzcut, and he was able to fit me in before his next appointment. His attention to detail was excellent, and his suggestions for the buzzcut, some of which I'd never heard nor considered, resulted in one of the best haircuts I've ever had. His demeanor and style were professional, yet friendly and amicable, and I was in and out in 15 minutes with a great style, at a GREAT value ($14 for detailed buzz cut. I decided to chop my long hair off and start fresh, so I made a last minute appointment at Vinnie's, armed only with a picture of what I wanted and high hopes. I have colored my hair for years and I have yet to meet someone more talented than Vinnie. About 2 years ago, like a moron I had dyed my blonde hair box color black. The extent of the damage was extreme and getting worse as I tried to get it back to blonde. Long story short, dozens of stylist later I met Vinnie. He was able to get my hair into better shape than its ever been before! I wish I could post before and after pictures on here! I am extremely happy that he has his own salon where I can schedule ahead of time. Due to my extremely busy life style, that is one thing off my stress list. As a few months ago, I needed my hair done immediately and he was booked for the day at Rudys. I let my coworker talk me into trying her stylist- yeahhh...I learned my lesson lol. His location is great, just minutes from downtown. Plenty of parking. Its family owned. Everyone is very friendly, easy going, not the fake nice with the forced small talk kind of salon. Granted, you won't have a barely legal hipster stylist's endowments all up in your face here at Vinnie's at the Ford, but what you will have is a grown-up haircut experience in a modern-but-not-fussy setting. Vinnie himself cut my hair, and I'll tell you: he made sure not a strand was out of place. Excellent workmanship, and unbeatable patter. He's been doing this since most stylists were infants. He knows what's up. They don't push product on you, but the stuff they sell there is good quality and they stand by what they use in the shop. I've been in Portland for 11 years. I am knit picky about how my hair is cut and cannot trust anyone to cut my hair. I went from long/medium to side shave pixie. SAM is awesome!!!! She listened and made sure to cut it in a way that was not shocking. I did not know that was possible, especially going from long hair to super short WITH a side shave. My favorite and trusted stylist, moved from Rudy's to Vinnie's many moons ago. I finally got down to see her. Chatty and chill, Stacy has been cutting my hair for 10 years?!. I am her Sam and she is my Frodo; don't go where I can not follow... Why so special? Because I am terrible about communicating what i want in haircuts. I come in w a general idea of what I don't want and Stacy listens, asks some questions and 30 minutes later, awesomeness is born. For me, who has problematic hair: thinning and fine, she always does me right. As of now, she works Wednesdays and Fridays...and often she works until 630p for those after work-before- the bar persons. Located in SE PDX on 11th and Division St, Vinnie's at the Ford, is in a trendy red brick building that is classy w/o being stuffy. Simply decorated with flash tattoo art w large store front windows, V's is a perfect Portland barbershop shop. Prices: $30 adult short cut and $36 for long adult cut. (shampoo included!?). Why not 5 stars? I live in Beaverton so it's a bit out of the way and parking can be challenging. Thanks Vinnie for opening up this gem up! Lucky us! read more

After reading all these great reviews I thought I would check this place out. Big mistake. They messed up my entire appointment. After getting a call from someone at the salon basically begging me to come in early as they had overbooked the time spot I had called in for I rearranged my whole afternoon to get there. When I arrived no one seemed to know what was going on and when I finally got into a chair the stylist informed me only one person in the salon does a cut AND color and he was booked for weeks. (I specifically requested a cut and color appointment when I initially booked....) She kindly offer to cut my hair but I declined. Lame customer service; terrible organization of business aspects. Although she doesn't do color, her cuts are amazing! My boyfriend has been going to her for years so I thought I'd give her a chance.
