This place is awful! I think they served me a 6" frozen pizza. The waitress was never came out of the restaurant to take our order at the parklet, we had to call her out each time. We ordered a glass of wine after being seated for 30 minutes. Another 30 minutes went by and we went in to ask if we could order food. The food was terrible. The two friends I was dining with stared at the "pizza" as the waitress put it in front of me. They were apologetic b/c they picked the restaurant. They swore the other location down the street was not like this. Why on earth would anyone spend $15 on a mini (and I mean mini!) frozen pizza when you could go to Pizzaria Delfina and get a fantastic pizza? There was only one other table seated, having one glass of wine, the entire time we were there. The pours we had were not even close to even, some of us receiving a glass of wine and another looked like a taste. The waitress was sitting inside, alone on her phone the whole time. Terrible spot! Time after time, every visit, every glass is special in its own way. The warmth that we are greeted with (as regulars and long-time Bernal residents) makes this intimate wine bar feel like home. Every question gets answered, special requests are accommodated. It's our favorite spot to unwind on Friday night after a busy week. Whether you are looking for a full glass or a taste, there is plenty of variety. We are fond of the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a rich fruity red and the Balletto Pinot Noir, an award winning jammy delight. Whites here are also enjoyable, with varietals you might not experience elsewhere. The food is rustic and satisfies the pickiest foodie (moi). Favorites stay on the menu, and it changes enough to enjoy variety. Come for a snack or a full meal. Servings are ample, without being huge. Love, love love the salads. My favorite hot dish is the Polpetti (meatballs) with crispy polenta cooked in a rich tomato sauce made with care. And there's lasagna if you want rich and cheesy. Leave room for dessert. Raisins? On a cheese plate? Really? Doing nothing but opening up a box of Sun-Maid to decorate your $10 3-cheese selection is pretty lame, and looks ugly to boot. How about sliced apples, dried figs, dried apricots, a few toasted almonds or walnuts? The cheeses--a hard truffled sheep cheese from Sardinia, a robbiola tre latte, and a soft goat--were lovely and nicely ripened, but getting nothing but a couple of teaspoons of honey and maybe 10 raisins on the plate made the whole experience feel pretty chintzy. When we arrived early in the evening on Mother's Day, the waitress/hostess apologized for all the mess (bread crusts, food bits) under our table (a family with a baby had just vacated). But she never came back to sweep up, just seated us and figured she'd done enough with an apology. She then asked us if we were moms, and when we replied that we were aunts, she shrugged and told us the free glass of prosecco special was for moms only. Kind of a loaded question--what if one of us desperately wanted to be a mom and couldn't? I happened to have spent the whole weekend taking care of my friend's kids (as well as their friends) and really could have used a nice glass of prosecco by then! Once we got our cheese, we were pretty much ignored (and it's a tiny place.) Had to go back to the kitchen to find our waitress and get our check. I want to like this place--it's a nice addition to my neighborhood, but they need to get their presentation in line with their prices. This is the place to go if you want Italian wine. The owners are Italian and can always steer you in the right direction if you are looking to try something new and delicious. I just tried a varietal they suggested, Frappato, YUM!! It's very intimate, and warm,the wine list has some good selections, but... the food and menu need to be worked on .The service was very nice, and efficient. Once a month, my two neighbors and I generally try to get together to check out either new or not so new restaurants in the vicinity. Tonight at 5:30 the three of us ventured down to VINOROSSO, an Italian Wine Bar & Restaurant on Cortland Avenue. They also have sister restaurants on the same block, Vega and Bernal Star. When we arrived the restaurant wasn't too crowded and parking was easy. Nice cozy, cute little place with huge selection of various wines to purchase. They have a parklet out front, which would be nice on warmer evenings or lunch. We were seated right away. Complimentary bread given. We each had a lovely glass of Prosecco to start our meal. For an appetizer, we ordered the Artichoke Hearts wrapped in Prosciutto. Not great to my tasting but my dining companions loved it. For my main I ordered the Capesante alla griglia, which is the Scallops wrapped in panchetta w/leek & shallot puree. So savory & flavorful. My dining companions ordered the stuffed chicken breast & the Eggplant Parmesan. Kinda small portions for the price but they said it was delicious. They also purchased a bottle of Balletto Pinot Noir, $20 corkage fee. I didn't try any (still battling my cold so my taste buds not up to par). We enjoyed ourselves, choosing our dishes from their yummy yet small menu. For dessert, it was a no brainer----Tiramisu. We all inhaled that baby! Delicious! The service was nice and friendly. Believe it or not, it was nice AND quiet. It was a relaxed place to eat and where we could actually converse without yelling over each other. Sometimes a rarity. A wine bar that is within walking distance to my bed is a dangerous thing. What's even more dangerous is that the times we have been frequented VinoRosso there was a wine merchant present peddling his wares. The dangerous part is they poured for the owners and for us. If you like what you are drinking chances are there is a bottle for sale of the same libation up on the wall which is always nice. I don't know how many times I have been out and drank some wine making a mental note to purchase said wine and then completely forgetting the name before the end of the night. In case you start getting a little tipsy they do have food on the menu, but I would classify it more as a bar menu not full-on restaurant menu. Please tell me that Bernal Heights is not so far from civilization that this is the best we can hope for. My caprese salad (in August!!!) was composed of rock hard supermarket tomatoes and mozzarella so old and dry that it had developed a rind. The wine list is very ordinary and very expensive. I really wanted to give Vino Rosso a five star review because the food is good and the wine selection is really great but the service was terrible! The gentleman working was very gruff/ rude to my girlfriend & me when we came in one evening for a snack & a glass of wine. The restaurant was near empty, yet he did not come over to check in on us for our order and was short/acted irritated when we asked about certain dishes. I know everyone has bad days but this was a real bummer. I hadn't seen my friend in years and it was a special time for us to be able to go out together. The happy hour is an incredible deal - four tastes for $10. They offer a good selection of wines by the glass. The downside is the smallish seating area. I'm very happy that this wine bar opened up in my neighborhood, we defiantly needed something of the sorts, they have a very extensive Italian wine list, with a few California wines in the mix, they have the usual cheese, and cured meats, but they also offer a homeade pasta and a few other dishes ,which is quite nice, It's a San Francisco enotecca, super friendly service, they only got four stars because I wish the table and chairs were a little more comfy, but a such a small space you have to deal with what you have. read more

Who would think that in Bernal Heights you can find a descent intalian wine bar with an art gallery next to it? VinoRosso is just perfect for the neighbourhood. They have a very good selection of wine. Their waiter and waitress would teach you some intalian :-), explain to you different type of italian wines. Most of the desserts are made by the owner's mom. The chocolate decadence (with hazelnut crust) and tiramisu are highly recommended. If you are planning for a nice dinner on cortland ave, that's a good place to stop by before or after dinner. read more

I always seem to head here after two occasions 1- After a day of shopping with a sister, mother or girlfriend 2 - When my husband picks me up at SFO after a daylong business trip to Southern California. This is a perfect local place to have a glass of wine and some light food. The ambiance is low key and a great spot to have a conversation and unwind. I usually stick to the one California chardonnay on the menu or the Prosecco so I can't tell you much about the wine menu, but everyone I go with seems to enjoy what they order. I've seen a few people really enjoy the red recommendations. Their dishes are closer to appetizers and are really, really good. I highly recommend ordering anything that includes fresh mozzarella, its always really good. I love their olives and their meat lasagna is my husbands favorite. read more

For those who don't know (and that includes me) an "enoteca italiano" means a locale where there are absolutely charming owners, nice colors, nice wines (and people who know how to recommend them), a simple light menu of cheeses, salads, figs and other things that go well with wine and a good soundtrack. I wanna tell you about this place my boyfriend took me here it's a really nice wine bar and a the wine here is amazing. We went like 2 Saturday's in a row and the waiter said if I see you a third Saturday I'll give you a drink on the house. As we leave he gives us our bill and see that we got no change back at least of change was going to be 20 dollars so because the waiter was being really nice I assumed that he took the tip automatic like we paid like over 150 so we were kinda confused about the tip so we left like 20 dollars of tip , anyways we went in the following week to get attacked by the waiter and he let us know that we are rude customers that left no tip . I was speechless I wanted to cry. There was still 2 hours before they where going to close and said that it's a slow night he will not be serving us. I went to sit in the car for a while and I went back and told him how could he say that about my boyfriend and I we both own family business and we know better then to leave a tip and he has no right demanding it ... I told him to look in his iPad system and tell me the amount of our bill and to review all his transactions and he didn't want to and apologized and said must of been a misunderstand ... This was really a traumatized experience. The place and the wine is amazing but I wish that waiter knows better then to demand a tip. And this doesn't happen again to anyone else it really a shame because I can't go in there without remembering that experience so please be-careful about your bill and always request the change they might take it and blame you the next time you come in ... Had a bizarre experience with this place. I was hanging out with a friend in Bernal Heights and it was the first wine bar we came across that was open so we decided to try it out. The setting was very quaint and although the place was empty aside from one other table (something that tends to make me anxious about place) it was warm and inviting. The other table seemed to be a regular, because she roped our waitress into a long-winded, one-sided conversation that took away from our service, but otherwise our server was very friendly and I didn't hold it against her. When our bill came, we split our check 50/50 half in my cash and half on his card. We left about a 30% tip and left, satisfied... ...until days later when the his credit card was MISTAKENLY BILLED for the full amount of our check. Meaning with my cash, our server must have gotten a 50-60% tip! I called to straigten out the matter which I was sure was an innocent mistake. I was told the owner would call me that day. I waited three days and NO CALL. Ok, people are busy. I called back and explained the situation AGAIN. And AGAIN I was told I would be called soon. I waited another three days and STILL NO CALL. Finally I called back and asked when the owner would be in so I could speak with her directly. I was told she'd be in later that night. So, again, I called and, this time, explained the situation to the owner. She was very apologetic and assured me she would refund the extra charge to my friend's card. It would show up in 5 - 10 days... ...did it? NOPE So we got hassled, then screwed, and my waitress walked out with an absurb tip after we were already pretty freakin' generous. This place is amazing! Definitely a hidden gem. It's small, quiet, and has a homey feel. We tried tons of food and a few wines when we went. I recommend the meat and cheese board. Everything on it was delicious, the bread is fresh and tasty, and the local honey pairs well with the cheeses. We also had the wild boar sausage, prosciutto wrapped artichoke hearts, meatballs and polenta, gnocchi, and lasagna. Each were very good, and very fresh; of those, my favorites were the meatballs and polenta, and the gnocchi. As for drinks, the man helping us (I believe he was the owner) recommended a dry white, and it was very good. We also tried and liked a red and a rosé from Abruzzo, and an Italian blonde beer. Overall, we had an amazing experience. The owner was friendly, the food was amazing, and the wine was wonderful! I highly recommend this place! read more

On a quiet street in Bernal Heights you'll find this tiny wine bar. Actually, I don't know if it's always quiet. I've only been here on weekdays and it's quiet then. Nonetheless, it's one of the few places open past 10pm and wonderful for after dinner dessert and wine. Tiramisu, Pears w/ Nutella, Mmmm. Heaven. So I can't really comment on the wine, as I've been pregnant ever since I started visiting this place! I can say that the people who I've visited Vino Rosso with have definitely enjoyed drinking it for me. My positive review comes from recently discovering that they serve a weekend lunch. This is one of the few places in the city that serves a lunch rather than a brunch on the weekend, which I really appreciate. We have now made this place a regular Sunday stop, and have loved everything we have tried (including their wonderful tiramisu when the sweet tooth is acting up). It's a nice place to relax, the owners are friendly, and it has a great view of the street life. Our only negative is that we keep trying to order grilled cheese but get something slightly different each time... but it's always good whatever it is! So inspired were we that we hired out the place for a family lunch on a recent Saturday. For an extremely reasonable price they gave us a fabulous party, including multiple courses and lots of good wine! read more

Dined here twice during our stay in Bernal Heights. Jesse, the server was very nice and prompt with service. Charcuterie assortment was very good and all the meats and cheese were fantastic. My friend and I happened upon this place on a Friday night and were so glad that we did. Our server was super nice and friendly -- and come on, $10 for a flight of whatever you like (that they're currently pouring), I was sold for sure! My friend and I both ordered the lasagna special and holy smokes, it was DELICIOUS! I'm usually weary of restaurant lasagnas, esp. from places I've never been to. It's too easy for it to arrive as a thick brick of low quality cheese and oftentimes layered with overdone mushy noodles. This was not the case here. The cheese along with the sauce (tomatoe and bechamel) and organic beef were all super! And the noodles, needless to say, there were perfectly cooked. Today my boyfriend and I finally had a chance to get out of the house and spend some time hanging out. We had YELPed places on Cortland Ave and this place seemed to have some pretty great reviews. So, we pop in today (Saturday) at a usually off time of about 2:30pm. There is only one table occupied so we felt like we would get some pretty good service. Sadly, we sat there for a while before we were even acknowledged. We finally get some menus and while we are checking things out a lady came in and sat down. She was then left with a menu for so long with out any service she left. We finally got our 2 glasses of wine (which were very good) but were never offered any water or bread like other customers who have now come in. We waited a significant amount of time and finally got our meals. We ordered the rib-eye steak Med rare and the lasagna with ragu sauce. The steak should have been called a medallion as it was only about the size of the palm of a woman's hand. It was cooked Med Well which is a sin in my book. Although all the food was good considering, it was not worth the price. We were eating and never did the waiter come by to see if we were doing ok or if we wanted more wine. Although he apologized for being slow, he did not provide the same level of service to all the patrons. Seems that only if you sit close to the back of the restaurant do you get noticed. We were very disappointed with this experience. Given the cost of our meal and the service, we most likely will not go back. read more

The four stars are sort of conditional on my latest visit (today) being one where the place was not overcrowded and noisy, as it often is. So instead of being a scene, today Vino Rosso was in fact a nice calm place to go chill after work, where you didn't have to shout to carry on a conversation, and where the service was attentive and properly unobtrusive. The Pinot Grigio my sweetie and I ordered was wonderful (hint: buying wine by the glass there can be quite pricey; I'd recommend buying a bottle whenever you have the time to hang out there for a leisurely while). And despite the not-always-so-wonderful food reviews, the calamari salad and the mozzarella and prosciutto thing were dynamite. I don't know if the moral of this review is to go to Vino Rosso on a Tuesday evening when the economy is depressed, but today, it was just the ticket. read more
