He told me this store was bought by Mill Valley Markets a few years back. There is such a lovingly well thought out variety of wine and spirits here. Just the best of the best. Incredibly rude and hostile man who works here. I walked in wanting to support a small, local business and was treated so horribly I had to write this review. I specifically asked if he had any wines made in Glen Ellen and listed off a few I knew. He did nothing but correct my mispronunciation of one of the wineries and then left me with a curt, "No." I guess business is so good he doesn't need to be polite or helpful. Excellent selection of a great Scotch at reasonable prices. Totally unlike the pirate re-sellers. Ok, it's a wine place, but it's my to-go spot for hard to find Scotch. I just ordered online and got it delivered. Yea, I'm in Costa Mesa, home of one of the better liquor stores in the country (and I don't mean Total Wine and More). Every guy needs a go-to place or two. You know what I mean - a go-to place for getting that special bottle, a go-to place when you need to get a special flower arrangement, a go-to place where you can hang out and chill with a couple of buddies. Vintage is my go-to place for that next out-of-the ordinary bottle of bourbon and a last minute bottle of wine when in Mill Valley. Almost every time I am in MV I swing by here to see what bourbons they have on the shelf. This is where I discovered Rowen's Creek (or was it Noah's Mill). This is where I picked up that Pappy Van Winkle 15 year at a decent price. The list goes on. The selection isn't the largest, but they always have interesting ones to choose from. Yes, they have Knob Creek and Makers and some of the other standards, but I can get those at Safeway if I want. I go here for Black Maple Hill, Willet Pot Still Reserve, Elijah Craig 18 year, or the aforementioned Pappy Van Winkle. They also have a nice good selection of wine. And the prices aren't too bad. read more

Best wine shop around - because of the people. Richard, John, Jim and chocolate lab, cooper, are a pleasure. They taste everything they sell - and they don't push junk or overpriced stuff on you ('cause they don't stock any junk) The only wine shop I know that gets an allocation of screaming eagle, the real reason to go there is for the selection in all price ranges - tell them what you'll be eating and they'll match you up. They have the inevitable california cabs, pinots, etc, but they also have some interesting french, oregon, german and italian wines. Shop owner may know a thing or two about wine but talk about traditional wine snob. I may not look like I understand and appreciate wine, but don't treat me like garbage because I don't. Told me "it's time to go" when waiting to go in his store then proceeded to shut door in my face. Lost my business & will take my 12-case order to somewhere with a little more respect. Avoid if you can, way better places locally. read more

In a crazy year, this is a weekend stop that never fails to deliver something special. David & Norm are outstanding. They have the best selection of great wine & spirits wine and are expert at pairing with your needs. I am a whisky drinker and really like very good and sometimes hard to find Whisky & Rye. They have never let me down. I now have a great library of bottles that I really enjoy sharing with family and friends. They really know their products and have an amazing selection that includes a lot of hard-to-get, or limited release bottles. I am always able to find something new and exciting to try and most of the time it is on their recommendation. In addition, their prices are very fair. Where most other retailers markup limited releases, or hard to get bottles, they do not. I never have to be worried that I am being overcharged. In a time when we don't have any money, when we splurge, not only should we receive some knowledge about what we're buying, buy it from someone who likes what they're doing, but also feel like a price is justified. My dad is a wine snob, and I don't mean this lightly. He's drinking uber expensive bottles of bordeux from the top French chateaus and I feel like Latour is going to be our new last name at the way he's going. This leaves me in a predicament when going to dinner or needing a gift for him. I can't afford those 1K bottles of delicious red, but when I get him a great bottle at Vintage, I know I'm going with something good, and at a good price. On many accounts he's given me the thumbs up on the Barolos and Montepulcianos that I've brought from this excellent Mill Valley joint. The guys there know what they're talking about, and aren't a rip off. Even though they're usually below BevMo, even if they were a buck or so more, I'd still go there as I'd much prefer to put the money in the pockets of locals who work hard, instead of some huge bullshit corporate monster company who isn't going to make "here" any better. read more

They are even better now. Vintage Wine has been purchased by Mill Valley Market, which is a win for both stores. Now MV Market can expand beyond their cramped space and utilize the expertise of the staff at Vintage Wine. I've been in since the acquisition and am a fan of how they are running the shop! I'm no alkie, but I have found something very nice to drink for the sweet teeth in us that's fruity, but not as fruity as a virgin cocktail or some chick drink (like a Cosmo, that's Cosmopolitan, not Cosmo Kramer). Might be old info, but for those who love the bottled grape juice made with Gewuztraminer or Pinot Noir wine grapes (contains no alcohol) from Navarro Wines, but don't want to mail order them/pay UPS shipping, or need to get them as gifts last minute, may be able to find bottles locally only at this store in Northern California. No Verjus here (it's for cooking apparently, don't be a doofus and down that stuff in front of your wine snob friends), that you will have to mail order direct http://www.navarrowine.com/shop/productlist.php?catid=2 The Pinot Noir (white grape) juice is insanely syrupy and sweet. It's best served chilled and add ice to lessen the sugar "ray" style blow. The Gewuztraminer juice packs a lighter punch with the sweetness, but has more depth. Nicely packaged in the same kind of wine bottles as the regular Navarro Vineyards offering, cork n' all. After you get this from Navarro direct or locally at this shop, you don't have to shell out $6 to $8 for a glass at Oliveto in Oakland anymore. read more

Ever heard of Orin Swifts "The Prisoner"? I am not talking about a literature novel you thought you were suppose to read in the 11th Grade, rather, "The Prisoner" is a wine label on a bottle of wonderfully strong alcohol content of 15.3%. Like many of the finest wines, you simply cannot buy this wine at places like Trader Joe's, BevMo or Safeway. However, you might be able to find it in better wine stores dotted around the bay area. Even though you can get this at Vintage Wines and Spirits, I was more than surprised they offered the double cost cousin wine, by the same Orin Swift vintner "Mercury Head" at $75.00. Vintage Wines & Spirits can help you with making selection decisions, and better, able to help you with wines for that very special dinner. All you have to do, is make sure you not tell your bank account what is going on. Thus, Fab selections on hard to find, super special wine that you want to either share - or drink yourself is obtainable here. If you noticed I marked the price range inexpensive (one $) only because I know about how much wines might be marked up. This particular store does not tend to price things in that way and isn't any higher or lower than anyone else. My husband n I, both Asian, went there this afternoon trying to buy champagne. Shopkeeper never greeted us. When my husband asked him for the champagne section while he was walking by us, he didn't stop walking, didn't look at us, didn't say a word, only pointed his finger at that section. Clearly, this white guy didn't welcome us. He should get out more to get himself educated on what ethnic diversity is all about. Shame on him !!! read more

Vintage Wines carries the best wine of any retail store in Marin. Period. If you're looking for a highly rated wine, something truly special, you come here. it's not a huge shop, but the selection is excellent--truly a wonderland for wine lovers. They have a special relationship with Shafer Winery (my favorite) which enables them to stock and sell most of their wines. My only issue with Vintage Wines has been the recommendations of their staff. They have recommended some truly mediocre wines, and not just once. Palates vary, that's true. But this has happened far more often than it should. I learned later that one wine they had recommended scored a 77 on Wine Spectator--not that WS is the ultimate judge on the quality of a wine, but I totally agreed that it was a subpar wine and wasn't at all worth the price. Prices are high, but that's to be expected, given that they offer wines that are difficult to find at retail elsewhere. Bottom line - if you know wine or otherwise know exactly what you want, this is the place for you. read more

I don't live in Mill Valley, but when I'm there this shop is a must. I trust their choices completely. If you are thirsty for water they keep the bottled water so cold its icy inside - just the thing for a hot Mill Valley day when you are wine shopping. I've walked into this store so many times with "so...I want something like this, but this is my budget..." and they have always come through. I'm a scotch man, with a bit of curiosity about absinth, and the guys here know their stuff. There are a few items they carry that you can get on the cheap somewhere else, but if you're paying attention, and ask for their help, they can steer you to great values and excellent spirits. read more

I was in a pinch for a dinner party ... my wine was all stored for moving ... and went in and discovered some true finds, including a local winery I know doesn't distribute very widely. What can I say about a place that has $7 Cristalino (great when you love champagne but your friends are all lushes so you can't afford the good stuff) and the staff doesn't mind when your toddler lurches into the expensive bottles of Joseph Phelps they have lying around? Love the dog too. These guys got a kick out of my visit when I asked to see the 20 year old single malts my husband had been hinting at. Needless to say, the price tags scared me away.... Wonderful selection of fine and rare wines and spirits. For that particular bottle of Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir, or Pierre Ferrand "Abel" cognac, there is no other place. Mill Valley Market just across the street also has a fine wine/liquor section, but the two businesses complement each other very well. MVM absolutely excels in vins de table, as well as vintage wine bargains, VWS has the extra reach into the exotic territory. read more

I spend time in Mill Valley from out of state for a week or two several times a year at a time. This is one of the best wine shops anywhere in the country. I thought carefully about this before putting one star....but I had a guest staying with me and she asked how she could ship some wine home she had purchased at a winery. Having purchased wine at Vintage before, I knew they had information about how to do this, since I personally had asked them the same question. My guest called Vintage and the person who answered he phone responded with, "you'll need to go back to Napa to send it. I have no idea." And hung up. I don't care how great you think you are, or if you think the caller didn't buy from you, there was no excuse for this rude, dismissive response. Arrogance and greed may be he answers. read more

We recently moved to Sausalito, where there simply is no decent liquor store. So over the weekend, we called around and were impressed when the proprietor of Vintage told us he stocked 140 single malts. We got int he car right away and drove there to stock up on a number of items. We waited patiently in front of the counter while the proprietor waited on another customer, even though he never acknowledged us. But when the other customer said he wanted to go get something to eat and would come back to complete the transaction later, we expected to be waited on. Instead, the gentleman started packing wine into boxes, again, not even acknowledging that we had been standing and continued to stand there. We looked at each other, continued to wait, and then my partner started to speak to him, something to the effect of, "Hi, we were interested in..." Well, the guy actually cut him off and said, without looking up, "I have to finish this." He had to finish putting the bottles into a box for a customer who had just walked out to go to a restaurant? How about "I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, how can I help (maybe even smile?)" I think we were so stunned that we stood there another few seconds, until he reached for another box and then started some other task. So, it was clear we, as potential lifelong new customers who, by the way, have pretty expensive tastes in single malts, were completely unimportant in this shop. We left.
