This place is pretty good as diners go! I don't much care for their coffee; it has a metallic taste as if the pots need washing. Other than that, I've been very happy with the food here. Restaurant was not busy yet we received terrible service. After waiter brought water over we asked for couple minutes to look at menu and when ready waiter was too busy on phone and flirting with staff members. Waiter was rude, got my orders wrong , didn't even write orders down, Hostess was on phone didn't even seat us told us to sit where we wanted. Will never eat there again and make sure to tell people not to eat there. When I told waiter they forgot cheese on my eggs took it back with such attitude. Ordered curly fries received regular fries tried to look past it. Ordered a grilled chicken wrap but was given chicken ceaser wrap told waiter it was not what I ordered he grabbed plate and walked away with attitude so we walked out and couldn't tell anyone because everyone was too busy on their phones. I am only giving it 3 stars because of Bob ( gosh I hope that was his name) I was there with my date at around 11:30pm, continued on thru out after 1am, since it is a diner mind you. Irregardless, our waiter was great, all of a sudden the lights at the section we were sitting in got shut off. Our waiter was telling the manager to atleast say something to us. This was extremely rude. All he had to say was that they were closing or anything to that effect. VIP was always a breakfast spot of us but after the service today, never again. The waitress was frustrated for some reason that it was so uncomfortable. We order coffee and just decided to pay for the coffee and leave because the waitress was annoyed that we wanted a few mintues to order. She came to our table 3 times within 5mins. We wanted to try something new and my mother can not eat port so we took alittle longer than usual to decide on what to get her. For some reason, this was annoying to our waitness. The owner of this place just made a dumb business move. The waitresses here have always been nice. The food can be hit or miss, but the pizza is very good, and many of the entrees are delicious. My husband and I often came here for the past two years, and when I needed to use the internet, I'd come in and make sure to order a big meal and snacks, and then tip my server generously, 20% or more. I always keep stay of my surroundings and if I notice the tables around me are filling up, I make sure to pack up and move over to Starbucks so I don't unfairly take up space. Today, my husband and I were working on our laptops at the diner. We made sure to order breakfast, drinks, and a snack, and were about to order lunch, when the owner walked up to us and VERY RUDELY said, "Don't you think it's time to move on? Isn't six hours enough?" (By the way, it had been four hours at that point with empty tables around us, and as I said, we'd been continuously ordering food and had been about to order at least $20 more for lunch.) This is such a dumb business move, because there are many people our age, young professionals, moving into the area. If they know the diner is a good place to work, where they can eat, have decent service, and telecommute to work, you're looking at a group of loyal customers of a new generation, with money. Instead, he just alienated two loyal customers who actually had talked up the place to people in our apartment building who hadn't been there before. Well, guess what? He lost our business, he lost our good opinion, and he lost our recommendation of his place. I'll go where a business owner can behave with common courtesy. Again, the servers are nice, the food can be good, but if the owner behaves in this shameful manner, I just can't spend my money in such a place. :( read more

I live nearby this place, and love that its open 24 hours so its great for late nights back. I usually get breakfast foods. I think the pancakes are good, but I've had a vegetable panini that i liked as well. Nothing to write home about, but is stable diner food. The service is pretty good. As for myself, I ordered a baked potato w/ sour cream and cheese and a Caesar salad. I received a very small potato with a piece of American "cheese" melted on top. These guys saved me from my post 5 hour bus ride to NYC munchies. I had a grilled cheese with bacon and tomato and it was pretty damn good. It's hard to keep the bacon from getting soggy in that kind of situation, but it held it's own. And the chocolate milkshake was very traditional (not overly chocolaty as some can be now) and not too sweet. My only complaint was that they didn't give me the rest of the shake in that metal mixing cup (I'm a sucker for that) and apparently I missed the older table side jukeboxes by mere weeks. I finished eating not 30 minutes ago, and I'm getting this feeling in my body that is screaming "Why did you eat here?" and "Why was none of this fresh?!" So, we walked in, grabbed a booth. We were sitting right near the cashier, who I presume is the manager, who seems not to notice the failings of his restaurant. She gets our order. An app and 2 entrees. I'm told I can hit the salad bar. What's so hard about getting a salad bar right? Decent lettuce, a few cut veggies, a couple of cheese-meat toppings, a few dressings, and croutons? Why can so few restaurants get this right, and how can VIP get it so damn wrong? Disgusting peel-n-eat shrimp, lettuce drowning in water or dressing? A salad abomination. Another 20 minutes go by. Where's the appetizer? It comes with the meals, of course! Just when I didn't want it! The mozz sticks were atop rotten lettuce, and was highway robbery at $6.95. I can get literally the same (or better) at McDonalds for $1. Meatloaf was ok. They had no more baked potatoes (really? Can't put a potato in the microwave for 8 minutes?) so had to switch to fries. And they forgot what veggie I ordered. The carrots and peas were inedible. My husband's Mac n Cheese was cold, cold, cold. I'm no foodie, but this reeks of a place that just doesn't give a shit about food or service. It's clean, convenient (parking lot, hello?), and open 24-7, so go only if those are your only criteria. This diner is not too far from the Journal Square PATH Station and when I went there with friends for lunch yesterday, they were renovating the back dining area. There were 5 of us in total and the hostess accommodated us with a sunny window booth and an extra table so that we would have sufficient room. We started with buffalo chicken wings ($5.95) and fried zucchini sticks ($4.25). They were piping hot from the fryer and were pretty good. The zucchini still had it's skin on which didn't bother us but the fried outer coating might have held on better if it was removed prior to battering and frying. I had a strawberry ice cream soda ($2.45) which was made backwards with the ice cream being put into the glass first and then topped with soda making for a large foamy head and not much soda. Our first young waitress seemed flustered having to wait on 5 people and we were later waited on by a second older waitress. I was beginning to feel full but at that moment, the main course arrived at the table. I had the 8oz. mushroom bacon burger deluxe ($7.45) with onion rings ($1 more for the rings) which came with a small side of coleslaw and a pickle. The burger was pretty big and juicy but I managed to finish it. Our bill for 5 people came out to about $66 with tax. Overall, the place was large, clean and the host was very nice. Our waitress Samantha, had that typical cool diner waitress demeanor. Pretty typical diner fare and ambiance but a pleasant experience. Prices are average. read more

The curly fries are excellent, and I had a great brisket dinner recently. I think that the waitpersons are very attentive, and I particularly enjoy chatting with the two cashiers from Albania. This is my local diner and is only a few blocks away. It is open 24/7 and has a huge menu that includes almost anything and everything you would think a diner could possibly have. On this particular night, we went pretty basic with the diner food and got the turkey club sandwich and the cheesesteak. The turkey club was delicious, made with thick cut turkey meat, almost like the left over meat on thanksgiving. They give you a variety different breads to choose from for your sandwich as well, white, wheat, rye and one more that I can't remember. The cheesesteak was also deilcious, served on a deliciously soft portugese roll, it was the perfect compliment to the steak, cheese and onions. I will definitely be coming here much more often after this impressive first impression. I definitely reccommend if you're in the area. read more

Terrible service but their chicken fingers are actually pretty good, which is what gives them 2 stars. Their waiters are always cranky and look like they don't want to be there (I don't blame them but it's their job), and they usually mess something up. Also, if you get 2 burgers, you don't get a top bun per burger. Or if you sit in a big group they will not want to split your check. In other words, something will always go wrong. I've been coming here for five years now and have grown to love the place. The dinner entrees (especially the fried chicken plate and scrod) and Philly cheese steak are particularly good, and the soup of the day nearly always delicious. The curly fries are also quite good. Some of the items on the menu are just okay, like the burgers and pizza, but the primary reason to come here is the desserts. There's always a case full of wonderful cakes and pies, of which the black and white cake and cherry cheesecake are personal favorites.
