There are so many choices on the menu that it's hard to make a decision, but freshness and good taste are a given whatever you order. The fried zucchini or mozzarella sticks may burn the roof of your mouth (careful now). You may not be able to fully cleanse the flavor of the blintzes until supper time. The old timer seated in the booth behind you may never cease slurping his soup. The punkass seated at 2 o'clock just won't quit his cussin' and dissin'... and his woman just won't ever leave him. I actually really like this place. The waitresses are always insanely hard working, and come back to check on you a few times during your meal. They also don't wait until your mouth is full of food, like a lot of restaurants do. The food that I've had has been pretty good, and depending upon when you come to eat, can be insanely quick to come out. My fiance is from France, and this was the first diner he has been to, and he loved it. I went in around noon today and ordered an omelet with my best friend, and both of our meals came out quickly, and piping hot. I had the misfortune of visiting this place out of neccesity, being that it was the middle of the night, and Popeye's was closed. I wish I had made it to Popeye's in time, because my meal here was very unpleasant. I ordered a sandwich and fries, and the fries were soggy. The sandwich was unremarkable except for the wilted lettuce, and I left feeling still hungry. Denise had an omelete that was spongelike in texture. Service was merely ok, but there were only a few other people in the place. Bottom Line: Although The Dirty Jerz has better diners, this one is close to the PATH station at Journal Square, and is open 24 hours, so you may find yourself stuck with this as your only option. Yuck yuck yuck! Came here late nite after alot of drinking and dancing in Newark and our fave late nite spot was packed. Pulled in here since it's near where I live, figuring, how bad could it be? well....pretty BAD. I like diners, especially for the late nite variety they provide when you need to get some food in your belly to soak up all the excess of the nite. I am not super picky, or demanding- I get it. It's late nite food, I don't need gourmet fare at 4 am. What I do need is edible food delivered in a timely fashion. We ordered simply- a chicken panini and an omelette. 30 minutes later we still don't have food, nor did the server check in with us. We are melting down fast, since we were starving, a little tipsy, and getting tired. When I ask her why it's taking so long she says because it's a panini and they take long. She then tells me my food has been ready for awhile and will bring it out. I get kind of irritated because eggs sitting for minutes get gross, which is exactly how they are. It all tastes like old rancid griddle, and I eat one bite and stop. Finally 10 minutes later my man's food comes out and it's not a panini at all- its a tortilla (cold) filled with what should have been the panini. It was huge and cold and ridiculous. And what happened to paninis taking so long? What were we waiting for? So we asked to speak to the manager who told us to basically go eff ourselves so we left that gross food and got the hell out of there. Never going back. I've found that Yelping has greatly improved my ability to find places that are new. In a place that I am getting used to, I was hoping that this Diner would live up to it's name. I normally go to places once and then I yelp it. But I had dine-in and take out.. The communication between waitresses was horrible. They kept getting mad at each other as well as cursing like foul mouth mean. Now I'm not saying I'm an angel. But Professionalism people or do we need to send you ladies back to charm school.. So my Western Omelet today came with the option of pancakes on the side instead of toast, and that instantly made the world a better place. Service was sweet and dinery. Our waters were always kept full without needing to ask, and that good ol black diner coffee wasn't bad. The good old VIP Diner that is honestly anything but VIP. This is definitely not the worst diner but it can really use some updating on all levels. When you're competing with other diners in the area, its really hard to WANT to go to VIP. I've been here several times and honestly its never been more than a 2 star rating, perhaps 3 because I've never had bad service. Its actually been the opposite, I've always had great service here. On my last visit, our waitress, was absolutely sweet and very attentive. The food was okay and its always just been okay. I ordered their Hickory burger which comes with bbq sauce, Canadian bacon, and cheddar cheese. First off, I ordered it medium hand it was overcooked, which made the burger dry. Then there was no BBQ sauce on the burger. I had to ask for it which I got on the side. It's the little things, come on.. it's not that hard to get wrong. Our waitress, an old lady with grey hair looked at my friend when he tipped her $3 when our food was only $15 and she said "3 Dollars?" and gave him the dirtiest look and also walked away with her head shaking and went into the kitchen and started yelling. Just your typical NJ diner. I don't think anything here is outstanding, but in my experience, the service and food is pretty consistent, and if you don't have high hopes, this place will do. I've been here a number of times for breakfast and dinner, and have stuck with a few items-- salads, omlettes, sandwiches. Again, nothing outstanding, but not terrible. And with so few decent restaurants in the neighborhood, this is an easy fall back option. I think their big asset is their desserts. Everything is baked on premises. I'm not a dessert person, but did get a few slices of pie/pastries for a Thanksgiving gathering I hosted last year and they were a hit with everyone. Also, after Hurricane Sandy this was one of the only places in the neighborhood that had power and heat. The line was out the door to get in and get some food, but the staff was very accommodating. They had all personally been hit hard, as well, and were empathetic to what the neighborhood was experiencing. That was nice to see. read more

I moved to Jersey City a little less than a year ago, and I've been to VIP most often out of any diners in JC. I'm used to diners, having lived in Jersey my whole life, and VIP is pretty solid. Not the best, but definitely solid. Last time I went, I had a waffle special - no, thanks, I'll stick to the Brownstone for those kind of things. But the eggs, toast and normal breakfast junk and coffee are good, and the service is pretty okay. I'm surprised people have written about shitty service - it hasn't been bad for me (yet?); I usually don't even have to wait for waitresses to come back before my coffee is refilled or if I need the check. And most importantly, shit is cheap. I'm all for quality, hence why I'd rather hit up Brownstone for pancakes or waffles, but for a lazy Sunday breakfast, ain't nothing wrong with VIP. read more

Nothing life changing about this place, but it's near my apartment and it does the job when a craving for diner food strikes and I can't be bothered to deal with the crowds & chaos at Brownstone (whose huge buttery pancakes & other various greasy treats I'm a huge fan of.) VIP is a pretty standard dinner, seems relatively clean, there's never a wait and they turn out the classics (omelettes, gyros, greek salad, sammies, etc) decently. Although I recently had a pretty delicious grilled cheese with bacon and tomato here, which was way less "meh" than I'm making the whole VIP experience sound. Went there at about 9:30 on a very rainy day so as expected the place was pretty empty. Besides us there were maybe 2-3 other booths with people in it, all small parties, all had been there before we got there so there was no reason to provide such bad service. There was no one to greet us or lead us to a table, after a couple of minutes the waitress tells us to pick any booth on a certain side of the restaurant and we did, hands us the menu and says she'll come in a second. It was maybe 10 minutes before the person I was with had to practically yell to get the girl's attention because she never even bothered to look our way even when serving the people directly behind us... Strike one. Took a while to get the food, and when we did she never bother to come and ask if we needed anything, any refills, anything at all... Nothing. Yet she did ask everyone around us even holding conversations and constantly asking how they were doing yet we were always overlooked. Some 10-15 minutes after we finished our meal we kept trying to get her attention to no avail. Finally had to call out to her to get the check, to which she replied that she'd be there in a second. 10, 15, 20mins and still nothing yet the place was still practically empty, we see she starts talking to another customer that's sitting on the counter and had to call out to her again. Very rude the whole time as she kept giving us an attitude, I understand it's not an easy job but when you have to call out to her (loudly) just to get the waiters attention and even then being ignored it simply becomes a problem. I've been here many times because my sister goes to St. Peter's college, and have always enjoyed myself. Obviously the diner staples of breakfast and burgers are delicious here, but over the course of my visits I've come to find some of the real standouts. The breakfast sausage is phenomenal. Unlike most diners that serve small pieces of shriveled meat, the VIP gives real sausage, thick links with a great flavor, with an outer crust browned on the flat-top...mmmm. Also, they allow you to substitute pancakes for homefries! The grilled chicken and rice is really good, but be warned that it takes a while to come out. And finally, the STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE. Oh my god. It has an unparalleled texture and it's so light that you can eat more of it than you probably should. read more

As others have noted, the desserts are excellent, and worth going there for on their own. I've never had a bad cup of coffee there, and the servers are usually older white chicks who are full of personality and know what "chocolate milk, but not too dark" means. It's cheap for the area, and they've never messed up my order, unlike some of the more popular diners. I went in here to get some sustenance after dining with some vegetarians. I ordered the hickory burger and an order of fries, along with some decaf. The decaf came out first and tasted like sludge. But it was hot and that's what I needed. The hickory burger came out next. I've never had a hickory burger with canadian bacon on it. It was a nice touch. The burger was nicely grilled and had a good char on it, as did the bacon. My only gripe was that the hickory burger came without BBQ sauce. But at this point I was more concerned about getting something solid in my stomach. The french fries were plentiful, if a little on the old side. They were still somewhat crisp. Service was pretty good. They had some good looking cheesecakes and other cakes in the window. My only other gripe was that the bathroom was not heated. It was like stepping into a freezer room. Being a longtime resident of the area, I have been to VIP several times. The food is very mediocre (perhaps even hit or miss) and really nothing to become excited about. It, however, is a great place to meet with friends who live around the JSQ area due to its central location right by the PATH train station. There is even parking for those who live a bit further and have cars. If I didn't live in the area, I would definitely take my appetite elsewhere. As a Jerseyan, I found this place just barely reaching par as far as Diners go. There was a lot of us and it was around midnight during the weekend of Halloween. The waitress was very friendly and got all of our orders correct. Food came out in a decent amount of time but a little slower than what I find to be typical Diner speed. Food really was just average judging from the quality of my dish alone. We got a plethora of different items on the menu and I ended up ordering disco fries but substituted the regular fries with curly fries. My gf got the Mozzarella sticks and they were average too. From what I gathered from my friends, everything ended up in the average range (in Diner standards) except the wings. Those were apparently EXCEPTIONAL so order those if you end up here. Other than that, it's a fairly typical Diner with no real standout selection. read more

As for the location, it's located not too far from Journal Square - making it an ideal choice for some late night grub. Parking is ample too, which is a rarity in itself in Jersey City. Visually, the diner embodies the characteristic ambiance we'd expect to find at any diner - like booths and a bar area. I ordered a Turkey Cub Sandwich with an iced tea - with the sandwich bearing a price of $9. To tell you the truth, the pricing is well within means of any other diner out there, and at the same time, it looks as though they have a deep selection of dishes to choose from. What can I say about the sandwich aside from being uninspiring. Heck, it's something that I could make myself at home - so they don't try to spiffy up this straightforward sandwich. Considering it was late at night, I was glad to find fresh looking and tasting tomatoes on my sandwich. Overall, the food wasn't anything spectacular.
