I had the displeasure of flying with this dreadful airline. They have a limit for carryon luggage oh 10 kg which most Mexican airline do. In my experience this is the only airline that has scales at the gate weighing all of you carryons. I was past the limit and they wanted to charge 850.00 pesos about 45.00 USD. I explained that my ticket covered one checked bag with no fees. They replied that I should have checked it in at the counter. That this charge was like a penalty for trying to get away with bringing extra weight into the cabin. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! So now they are the police and can charge penalties. I had to pay and needless to say I was very upset. Don't use this airline if you can. I fly regularly in Mexico and try to avoid this airline. I rather use Volaris, they have the same 10 kg rule but not enforce it. I fully intend to contact the airline and try to get a refund. I felt helpless and taken advantage of.

OK, so I wanted to go out of town on a short trip that didn't break the bank, nor be too much in my comfort zone. So I flew to Guadalajara on Viva Aerobus, Mexico's low-cost carrier. Short version: It's A-OK if you want to travel "like a native," but make sure your Spanish is "muy excelente" and that you are the adventuresome type. Long version: Viva Aerobus is Mexico's version of Spirit Airlines, minus the rude attendants and crappy seating. Viva Areobus only travels to three cities in Mexico from Bush Intercontinental: Guadalajara, Cancun and Monterrey. If you are not going to these cities, forget it - use another carrier. Purchasing tickets on their site is easy, quick and convenient. They give you a base price (in either dollars or Mexican pesos), and you can add on VIP seating, luggage allowance and all that. Even with the "hidden extras," my round-trip ticket was less than $250. Wow. Unlike United Airlines, Viva Aerobus is in Terminal D - meaning fewer crowds, quicker TSA groping and convenient gates to depart from. I got to the airport at 8:30 am for my 10:30 am flight, and by 8:50 I was at the gate. Wow. Clientele is typical of any Mexican airline - lots of abuelitas with their grandkids (most of them loud and hyper), young couples, young families - very few single people. I'm sure they probably looked at me as curiously as I looked at them. But I digress. Seating is like Southwest Airlines - first come, first served. Even though I was in the "third" category (out of six), I still managed to snag exit-row seats. Lots of legroom. Plus, the aircraft was a 737-300 (one of the older models), and the seats fully recline! Wow. NOTE: Since this is a Mexican carrier, all announcements are primarily done in Spanish. If you aren't fluent, either take along a friend who is, or fly a U.S. carrier. They do the safety instructions in English, but that's about it. However - that being said - the in-flight experience was definitely interesting. Yes, they charge you for refreshments; however, they charge in pesos - so you'd better have some on you. They do accept credit cards on board, but it's a hassle. But hey - this is a Mexican airline. It's the only time I've ever seen an airline refreshment menu with a michelada on it! (It was a steal at 50 pesos = $3.35) And where else can you get Mexican sandwiches, beers and other refreshments so cheap? WOW. Another thing - the plane was only less than half full. I had a whole row to myself. You would think that with the low prices and direct service, the plane would be like a cattle car. Nope. The best thing about Viva Aerobus is that you can also purchase bus tickets, taxi fares or other ground transportation while on board. If you know where you are going and kind of know how to get around those cities, it is a godsend. They sell fares cheaper than at the airport. So - will I fly them again? Possibly. Do I recommend them? Only if you are adventuresome and can speak Spanish. If you are the type that needs some hand-holding, then it is not for you.

Fares are usually quite reasonable and the ability to change your flight based on price to get an adjustment is seamless. Although there has been alot of negative associated with SWA lately because of the elimination of 2 free checked bags and now utilizing assigned seating and the elimination of the a, b, and c boarding groups. As a swa visa cardholder depending on your status, you still retain at the very least 1 free checked bag. I found the new boarding groups less chaotic and crowded which was a relief for me. Annoying is the word I would use to describe people who all at once are trying to put their unchecked bags in the overhead bins. Not so much this flight out of Hou Hobby! Although this flight was sold out everything was very smooth with the boarding procedure. I also found the assigned seating straight forward and not a bunch people trying to find an open seat all at once. The in-flight coffee is wonderful and as I said for before the best in the sky! Thank you Southwest for this! I did the see that they also added cherry coke zero as an option as well as hornitos margaritas. So the most unique and wonderful thing I found was that there is a phone holder now in front of you now to watch your videos at your seat on the newer Max 8 planes! We loved this! Overall I luv SWA and will continue to fly with them! My only gripe was the large group surrounding our seats talking loud and using profanity at 445 in the morning as well as passing food around as if I was going to help them pass their food around?

My main "put off" was the old, dirty, worn, "ridden hard and put away wet" planes that we had... especially he ROC to CLT flight. I used the restroom and couldn't believe how gross it was. Parts of the trim were peeling off, just looked overly used and icky. American's planes were like night and day from the crisp, new and flashy Delta planes we had on our flights to Rochester. Then there's the technology or lack there of. Delta had fancy touch screens in each headrest allowing you to watch movies, play games, etc. American Airlines did have free entertainment that you had to access through your phone/tablet but there was an issue with trying to get it. On our last flight, the guy sitting next to me helped me get to the entertainment but after that, HE kept getting kicked off his. He kept trying the entire flight and got so frustrated, he quit trying. (I felt bad bc he helped me and I was able to watch a movie and there he was, struggling the whole time.) I got kicked off once but was able to get back on but it was still annoying. Never had issues with Delta. AA had fold out phone/tablet holders and usb charging ports on our second flight. Meh. No refreshments. Wow. I know airlines are getting stingier and stingier but holy moly! When waiting at the gate in Rochester, the gate attendant states over the loud speaker that they will not be serving any snacks/drinks on the flight and that if you wanted something, you needed to get it in the terminal to bring on the plane!! Whoa! The second flight did offer pretzels and a drink but honestly it was super off-putting to not offer anything on that first flight. I wasn't able to get e-tickets to have on my phone so we didn't have to worry about paper tickets. When I checked myself and my 4 year-old in the day prior, it offered digital tickets if you put in your email. So I put in my email for both me and my son... oh, they can't send them to the same email. So apparently, a 4 year-old needs their own email account to be able to get an e-ticket. SO STRANGE!!! Saw that there was an offer for airline credit in you give up your seat. Was tempting BUT I wasn't wanting to fly with them again anyways and we just wanted to get home. Flight attendants weren't overly friendly but they weren't terrible either. Checked bag cost us $30. All in all, American Airlines was completely different than our Delta experience. Strangely enough the only helpful woman there WAS able to look it up and even assigned me the seat in the same class I was in on my canceled flight. Shakira's little friend, who knows her name they all had their name tags covered, (I asked Shakira for her name) also treated me with disdain and like she had no time for me, in fact in the middle of our conversation (about my Dallas flight before the other lady stepped in to help) she started other tasks and once she finished those, WALKED AWAY. Walked AWAY. While I've been standing at the counter right in front of her face for at least 20 minutes. When I said to the other woman standing there that had already gone through 4 people behind me that she was helping me and just left... she said oh she must have forgot. She must have forgot? So she helped me and said woman returns she says to her... you forgot about her and she's like "yea she was talking about a voucher yadda yadda yadda" so you didn't like me inquiring about what every single other person is inquiring about when you cancel flights so you choose to ignore me and WALK AWAY?? Fast forward to this morning after having been up for 28 hours now, arrive to the airport to ANOTHER DELAYED FLIGHT. Supposed to leave at 825 now scheduled 905 meaning I will miss a chance for a flight I was first on the standby list for. I now will have a 10 hour layover in Phoenix because it's the best they could get me after the flight delays/cancelations. I said good morning to the gate agent do you know why this flight is delayed? Crew rest. Ok cool can you see if there are any flights out of Phoenix to Reno since I will miss the 10 am one? NO. She will not. Oh ok cool. Thanks for nothing American Airlines workers at IAH.
