It's been years since my last visit to Vivo Ristorante. We came with a group of 14, on a Saturday evening, to celebrate a special occasion. Rented out the private dining room (5pm/8pm options) which required a $500.00 deposit. We customized our own $78.00/person set menu. 22% automatic gratuity is added on top. If you bring your own cake, they charge $3.00/person. Our waiter, Jordan, was excellent. We ordered two Bollini pinot grigio ($55.00) and Il Bruciato DOC ($75.00) wine bottles. For food, there was black tiger shrimps, scallops, risotto, rigatoni (not al dente), brazino (sea bass was the best dish of the night) and short rib. The vegetables (carrots, brussel sprouts and oyster mushrooms) were impressively small. Three small bowls for the entire table. We ordered another brussel sprout ($16.00). They also charged $2.50 for hot water. Food was okay but nothing memorable. read more

This was hands-down, one of my top three favourite dining experiences in Edmonton. Everything was absolutely outstanding from the moment we arrived. Our server was helpful, seemed to always appear at the exact right moment and had wonderful recommendations. We started with the Olive Calde which was served warm- marinated Italian olives, bell peppers, roasted garlic, pepperoncino, EVOO, pan-fried focaccia which was divine. The oysters were lovely. We opted to share a few dishes-a ricotta gnocchi dish, the short rib and the chef's special which was 3 risotto seafood lobster pieces. Plus the Brussel sprouts which just get them! Once again another amazing meal with great service. Price point is a little high, but i feel really worth it. We shared the aranchini. I went with fettuccine alfredo which won one of the best 100 things to eat in Edmonton in Alberta. Hubby went with the rigatoni with Italian pork sausage which I think he went with last time we went last time. We ordered two cocktails which were expertly made and delicous. The arancini was good but didn't leave an impression. So I probably wouldn't get this again. Pastas were amazing and huge portions. I would say that the fettuccine alfredo is the best in the city. We came here for a birthday party in the private party room they have. Wow was I ever impressed. First there is tons of parking outside, the interior of the room we were in was very nice with the feature wine wall as a backdrop. The only downfall was the room was very cold and we had to ask to turn the heater up if they could because we had a lot of women in dresses and we were all very cold. They did try to do this for us but it was still on the chilly side. The servers we had were attentive but not overbearing. They did a great job at bringing us what we needed, making sure our waters were always full, and taking cocktail orders several times. We had a set menu which came with all sorts of delicious foods! Everything was AMAZING! The beef tenderloin was absolutely delicious, the pastas were cooked to perfection, and the risotto was so good!! I would definitely come back to this restaurant for another dinner. For our set menu we had so much food it was crazy. We could not finish it all and there were tons of leftovers. The waiters packed up all the leftovers and the birthday boy took them all home but I really wanted to take some home too hahaha. The only thing is the servers forgot to put a candle into the cake for dessert so we could sing happy birthday. We had to ask them after we had all finished to please do that and they apologized and brought out a small slice of cake with a candle on it. We got our birthday moment so we were all satisfied. The owner came in to greet us as well which was a very nice touch! I would highly recommend this spot as the food was just so delicious. Our bill came to $180 with the food, cocktails, sparkling water, and tip included so I would say it was reasonable especially as we were all stuffed and there were leftovers still too. Vivo Italian Cuisine Nancy and I decided to venture out for a bit of "Fine Dining", and made reservations at Vivo Ristorante in Hawkstone, just off of the Henday on Lessard Road. I previously sampled their Gnudi which was prepared by one of their chefs a few years ago at a Home & Garden Show, so was looking forward to sampling some things off of their menu at the restaurant. I was impressed with the helpful manner and professionalism of the person that answered the telephone as he provided clear guidance re the menu, etc. based on the questions that I had. On arrival, there was ample parking in the large strip-mall lot that they share with Hawkstone Physio, Co-op, and a number of other businesses. We were warmly greeted by the host and promptly seated at a nice table, Nancy having a good view of the open kitchen where the meals were being prepared. The waiter, introducing himself as Diego, was attentive, and provided us with a wedge of lemon for our water on request along with a bottle of water for the table. We perused the menu for a minute which was identical to the one on-line and ordered what we had already pre-selected, the Filetto (beef tenderloin) done medium for Nancy, and the Agnello (lamb chops), medium rare for me. I was slightly disappointed we were not offered the bread and olive oil/herb/balsamic dip that I had previously read about (admittedly in a review several years ago) as we waited for our meals. When the meals arrived, generous amounts of fresh ground pepper was provided on request which led to the only glitch of the evening. Taking a small first bite, it was immediately apparent that the lamb was over cooked, not the medium rare as ordered. Bringing this to the attention of Diego, the issue was promptly attended to and even the manager came by to apologize for the mistake. My replacement meal came promptly on a fresh plate, all well presented and looking very appetizing. Nancy reported her meal to be very good, being especially complimentary about the onion jam which was not too sweet as can be the case, and she really enjoyed the accompanying horseradish mouse as well as the 2 large pieces of prosciutto crisp. My lamb was delicious as well, perfectly cooked this time, and the Tuscan beans really complimented the tender bites of meat. The vegetables were well prepared and presented. I read a few reviews that thought the meals were severely over-priced, however I thought the value was in keeping for this type of dining experience, and definitely worth a return trip if fine dining is the goal for the evening. read more

We went out for a double date birthday celebration and the server was absolutely so amazing and a sweetheart. She even surprised me with a birthday Tiramisu. Everything was super delicious and savory. What really stood out to me was their Rigatoni. Something about their perfectly Al Dante pasta and sauce combination; it was heavenly. Rigatoni consisted of: Italian pork sausage, spicy tomato sauce, red wine, lemon mascarpone, and micro green So good that I would have licked the plate haha This was what we have ordered as well: Capesante pan seared scallops, butternut squash puree, pancetta chips, lime infused black sea salt The scallops were cooked perfectly. I usually feel like it's a hit or miss at other restaurants because they tend to overcook them. This was not the case at Vivo's. The butternut squash complimented the scallops nicely. Risotto di Aragosta lobster, butternut squash, marash, white wine, grana padano, green onion This was super filling and a half order would have been suffice. The flavour was good but we loved the rigatoni more. Cavoletti di Bruxelles roasted Brussels sprouts, crispy pancetta, spicy honey The crispy pancetta added a great texture to the brussel sprouts and the spicy honey wasn't too spicy but it was yummy . Agnello 1/2 lamb rack, rosemary, mint cream chevre, baby potatoes, grilled vegetables Worked out perfect because it came with 4 racks. We always have an incredible meal at Vivo and last night was no exception. The fettuccine is an absolute must!! We also had the short rib, which is a personal favourite and tried the Brussel sprouts for the first time. After receiving numerous recommendations, I finally had the chance to visit Vivo for dinner. My husband and I were the first to arrive in our group of 7. Once seated, we were immediately informed by the host, who also appeared to be the front of house manager, that we only had 2 hours before they needed our table for their next reservation. What a great way to start our dining experience by rushing us out the door. I was extremely agitated. At this point, I was just hoping the rest of the night would be more enjoyable. As the rest of our group arrived, we still waited quite a while to be greeted by our server. We knew we were in for a long night. That being said, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. First up was the Carpaccio. Thin slices of beef tenderloin topped with a sweet pepper aioli, crispy capers and Parmigiano Reggiano. Great balance of flavours and the beef completely melted in my mouth. Next we had the Capesante. Pan seared scallops cooked to perfection and paired nicely with a butternut squash puree. I also really enjoyed how the pancetta chips added a nice textural element. We ordered the Caprese salad as well. Nothing special, but it was nice and refreshing. For the Primi, we started off with the Gnudi. Absolutely delicious! The toasted gnocchi were light and pillowy and the walnut butter added a great richness to the dish. Next was the Lobster Risotto. The rice very creamy and full of flavour. There were also large pieces of lobster scattered throughout. My favourite dish of the night! Then came the Secondi. We ordered the Agnello. The lamb rack was a little unevenly cooked, but still very juicy and tender. And lastly, Veal cutlets in a mushroom sauce. This was my least favorite savoury dish of the night. The veal just got lost in the sauce. We then ended the night with desserts. I wish the meal finished on a high, but it did not. The Panna Cotta had great flavour, but unfortunately was very stiff. We had the Mini Cookies as well, and for me, they were too cakey. The dinner lasted 3 hours. We were served our main courses 15 minutes before they expected us to leave. And it was only then that the manager came by to tell us that we could take our time, as they no longer needed our table. Our server was very attentive, and overall, the food was pretty good. Had a chance to revisit this restaurant after a long time... I think I went or when it first open years ago. Really good friend of mine said the fettucine Alfredo is so authentic and is just incredible, and I was craving pasta so I had it down for my moms birthday. We went Wednesday night, it was pretty quiet... I found it was funny that they sounded like they were trying to squeeze us in when I called for a reservation... Maybe that's how the ladies are trained up front. Anyways when we got there the service was great one waiter who is experienced running the show, and one manager who was quite pleasant. The big pepper grinder was a real hit, and the food was awesome. I would say that the fettuccine Alfredo was definitely something that was very different and unique to Edmonton, I would say it is very authentic very cheesy very rich and I would highly recommend it. We also share the calabrese salad, and the Tiramisu was completely perfection. A lot of times tiramisu was too sweet, or done in a non-authentic way. This was perfect when it came to sweetness, and had very delicate ladyfingers and espresso with marscapone cheese... To die for!! We had a little bit of wine as well, I would say the prices are quite High for what you get, but you are getting some pretty great food. They did have a couple platters that were astronomical in price 1 more than 200 dollars, but I didn't get to see it. So definitely be prepared to spend some money here. Although I would say if you are going to spend money and you get great service and great food that's what a fabulous restaurant really should be about. read more

I can't believe it took me this long to check out this place! There was so much I wanted to try! Vivo is family style which I like as it means more options to share! I went with two friends and we shared the Cavoletti di Brussels aka roasted spicy brussel sprouts. Which were roasted to perfection but I love spicy so I didn't find them spicy but had a nice flavour. The Risotto di Argosta aka lobster butternut squash risotto was so buttery and flavourful with bit chunks of lobster. Then the main event aka course the Filetto aka beef tenderloin. Cooler to perfection (for us that is medium rare but they cook more so on the rare side so it was perfect!) the beef was to die for and nicely paired with sweet red onion jam and horseradish mouse which was light but missing that horseradish kick that I love. They staff was very informative and helpful. I will definitely be back and hopefully soon! read more

We decided to celebrate our anniversary on this beautiful nice restaurant and let's start with the restaurant is very nice and beautiful I really like that the kitchen is open viewed and whatnot, the service was good could of been a bit better but over all it was good. The reason for the lower rating is due to the main course food. We first ordered a entre with was the carpaccio which was very very good, then we ordered the gnocchi which were very very very good, well be thinking of them for a while, but then we order the steak and we'll it was good to be honest, I like my steak medium rare to rare and the first time it came out medium, they remade a new one and the manager came with it and also apologized for it which was great, but again the steak came out medium and even the manager said it was wrong. We still ate it because I didn't want to waste food but it was disappointing. The manager did come to us and gave us a gift card to come back so I'll hopefully be returning soon to give it a second try read more

Reserved the private room for a friend's birthday, there was about 12 or us, so we were provided with a pre-set meal. Started with the meatballs, found them very tasty and you can tell they are freshly made After that we were served Caprese (tomatoes with Mozzerella cheese), Fettuccine, Risotto with some prawns (one of my fave, I'd have to have again), a special platter with chicken, sea bass, rib steak (nicely done med-rare), asparagus and grilled pear. Finally dessert was Tiramasu. We also ordered some wine, they have a pretty nice list. Wish I had taken more pics, but was too busy eating all the delicious offerings. No complaints about the food, you can tell things are made fresh and they put care into all they make. Service was awesome, as they not only explained all the dishes, but constantly came to ask how things were and to refill water. Prices may seem on the high side, but portions are huge, it's meant to be shared. So I would suggest if you go, best to go with 4 people so can sample many different dishes. We didn't leave there hungry and I even got some left over to take home. I would definitely go again with a big group! The dining experience was pleasant -- good service and ambiance. It was quiet and empty when I went, but I was told that it is usually busy and can get quite noisy. Don't be off put by the prices as dishes are served "family style", in large portions that are meant to be shared. This does limit the amount of variety you can have if there are just two of you, but it is definitely good for large groups. The menu is split up into appetizers, pasta, entrees, vegetables/sides and desserts. We ordered the caprese salad and the rigatoni, both of which were quite good. The cavoletti di Bruxelles was likely the tastiest dish of brussels sprouts I have ever eaten. If you are a cookie lover, you absolutely must order the biscotti assortiti (one dozen fresh baked cookies). These are made to order and arrive warm and utterly delicious. The wine list is extensive, although a bit overpriced. One complaint I have is that I was not first poured a sample of my wine to taste. The server simply poured the entire amount into my glass. Vivo is easy to miss as it is tucked away in a plaza, but it is definitely worth a visit. Reservations are recommended and can be done through OpenTable. read more

This is my third visit to Vivo and each experience has been slightly different. Consistency would bring this restaurant to 5 stars for me. I have observed significant variation in the preparation of the caprese salad to the point that I actually need to ask if they have all of the ingredients. Also I find great variability in the style and quality of the wait staff. That said the food at Vivo is some of the best Italian in Edmonton. What I really enjoy about Vivo is the family style menu. As a table of four or more you can try several different items. We shared a caprese salad, fettucini tossed in several cheeses and butter, mushroom risotto, beef tenderloin and a side plate of beets and carrots. The caprese was good with its unique use of semi dried tomatoes, but lacked the gooey buffalo mozzarella cheese I experience the first time I visited the restaurant. Three visits, three distinctly different caprese salads. I will continue to frequent Vivo. I suggest you try it out and bring your appetite. read more

Sadly, I would have to say that the food here definitely does not reflect the prices. My boyfriend and I ordered two appetizers and one half plate of pasta and our bill came out to $70! If the food was superb then we would not have minded the prices at all, but the food left us disappointed. First off we ordered the beef carpaccio and it was very pretty but that was all that it was. The beef itself was very bland and even the salt and pepper couldn't help. The sour cherries themselves were very flavorful but the two did not work together. Without the cherries the beef was bland, with the cherries the beef was overpowered and all you could taste was cherries. We also ordered the brussel sprouts with the pancetta and that dish I could have made myself at home, and probably better. The brussel sprouts weren't roasted evenly, the pancetta was overcooked to the pointed where they were chips, and there was no sauce. You would think the pancetta would flavor the sprouts but it didn't. For our main course we ordered the short rib papardelle and this was the most decent dish. The pasta was cooked well and so was the short rib. There was definitely flavor and it was quite tasty. The only thing I would say is that it was a tad too salty. Our experience led us to not order dessert but our waiter gave us mini little complimentary panna cottas and this was the best dish of the night! The panna cotta was smooth and rich and had just the right amount of sweetness, not overbearing at all. Would I come back? Probably not. Having delicious panna cotta isn't enough for me to return. Maybe I didn't order the right dishes, who knows. However, for those of you that want to come and try this place, I can say with confidence that service is great and they will take care of you. read more

We came here to celebrate a birthday, party of five and it was almost empty, we came here at 5:30 pm on sunday. We shared the caesar salad, large, it was halved lengthwise and seared, including the lemons, it was very delicious. We also had the scallops, seabass, tenderloin, beets and carrots, mushrooms, fettuccine, and gnudi, and the cookies for dessert. Our server was attentive, and accommodating, we shared everything family style, but dinner took three hours! There were lulls in between what was served and the kitchen staff seemed to be short. Been listening to advertisements to Vivo for years and now that we've moved to the west end..time to make an appearance. The space is really gorgeous, with an open kitchen and wide spacious dining area. It felt fancy but not pretentious. We were a large group of 8 this evening and the menu is perfectly geared to large or small groups. Actually an interesting concept as each dish is able to be ordered in 3 different sizes. (S,M,L) The table ordered a huge Caesar salad where they grill the whole heads of romaine till they get nice and crispy. Then drizzle the sauce and the rest over right before it's served. Spectacular! I had to try the meatballs and they were also divine. Soft and delicious. The mains were a little more underwhelming for me, I ordered the chicken (kinda Parmesan) it was a roasted breast with marinara and mozzarella. Pretty good, cooked well but the pasta it came with was mushy and over cooked. The majority of the table had a seafood risotto that I really thought lacked seasoning, but everyone seemed to be satisfied. Our server did a great job, had a little mishap with a little food spill on one of our party which we assured him was no big deal, but the manager still came over and apologized and then bought our dessert! Absolutely fabulous service front to back. If you go on Wednesday's is half price bottle of wine and their list is diverse and well thought out so that's the night we'll be heading back. This place has a really goof vibe. It serves up family style dinners and they buy local ingredients. They even tell u where they sourced their goods. Overall the meal was pretty good. I had high expectations but I must say was disappointed just a little on the taste of our meals and that's why I gave a three star rating but it was on the cusp of a 4. We started with the Caesar salad and it was really good. Then we had the risotto which I don't recommend. We also had the cheesy fettuccini and it wasn't bad. This was followed by a meat plate of chicken, prime rib and sea bass. This was definitely a great dish. The sea bass melted in your mouth. The chicken was delish and the prime rib cooked perfectly. I did enjoy this place. Little background info. I don't often enjoy going to pasta focused places. However, this place was nothing like I was dreading. It was amazing. The service was fantastic. The server knew what he was selling, very professional, very friendly. I never felt bothered and ignored. The service was exceptional which is should be in a service industry. But it seems some places forget this. The menu is family style which is good for big groups. I went with one friend so I wasn't sure how it would turn out. We like to eat, but are not always big eaters. There are two prices on the menu, half and full orders. We ordered an two half apps and one half pasta. They are generous portions which fill us both up! We had a little amount to bring home, but we could have powered through to finish it up. First time enjoying Vivo and we were pleased. We sat under an ac vent which was rather chilly but the overall venue and experience was great. My husband had the chicken parma and was pleasantly surprised that it came with a salad as well! I had the Italian sausage appetizer and the caprese salad and both were full of flavor and good value for portion. The wine list is nice but fairly pricey. Reviews on this restaurant was fantastic, so we decided to come as a group of nine for dinner. Reservations were made a week ahead with a $400 deposit for the group. 20% gratuity is added for a group larger than six. Coming in as a group, there were certain dishes that stood out. Antipasti: Of the Caprese, Salumi e Formaggio, my favorite was the Carpaccio: tenderloin on house made crackers with pickled peppers and parm. It was a good start, among the other selections. Primi Piatti: My favorite part of Italian food, the Linguine was good and the Gnudi was better. Unlike any gnocchi I've ever had, this is soft, melt in your mouth smoothness. Secondi Piatti: Among Pollo, Vitello, I liked Angnello best with a decent rack of lamb for 3 average individuals. Soft, great flavour, and usually done medium. We ordered 3 antipasta, 2 pastas, 3 meats, 2 sides, 2 desserts, ~4 beers, 2 bottles of wine, and 3-4 fizzy drinks.. in total it was $700 for nine people with gratuity. The three most memorable thing about this place would be 1) what a fantastic spot I had sitting at the bar, overlooking the open kitchen and the chefs hard at work, 2) what an absolute pleasure it was meeting the French chef, but 3) for that to be slightly ruined by my pretentious waiter. He wasn't too helpful and gave me the impression that he didn't want to help because he didn't think I could afford the food. I ordered the grilled caesar salad, which I had at Nordstrom for the first time and loved so wanted to try it here. It was a massive portion but I adored the presentation of it, heads of grilled baby Romaine stacked on a wooden board. Dressing wasn't overpowering and the grill just brings out a unique smokey flavour of what would otherwise be quite a bland vegetable. I enjoyed this. My main was their famous pasta. I gotta say this was way too cheesy for me. And it wasn't necessarily a cheesy/creamy sauce, but essentially it was just melted cheese. This was a problem when the dish started to cool down and the cheese would solidify, making it hard and unappealing to eat (the pasta would get stuck in the cheese and you then couldn't twirl it around your fork anymore.. you'd have to use a knife to cut up the block of cheese/pasta). Prices are high for what the food represents, and while the ambience and view of the kitchen was different, I'm not sure it warrants the price. As always, this place does a great job with the food and the experience. The family style dining always seems a bit odd to the newbies but by the end of the night they all rave about it. Food is delicious, service is excellent, and when you break it down cost per person, its very reasonable. Highlights are the carbonara, any of the starters, the Brussels sprouts and the excellent tiramasu. New on the menu, for those that still aren't sold in the family style dining, single servings! Adapt, make some changes to accommodate the things you can, but they are also staying true to their roots. Love it. read more

This is my favourite west end restaurant. I'd highly recommend driving here from any other part of the city. Dinner with the family once again proved Vivint doesn't disappoint. We started with the small caprese salad. Heirloom tomatoes, hand pulled buffalo mozzarella, sunflower pesto. Yum. Pasta was the fettuccine Alfredo. Good. For the main we had the Alberta beef tenderloin. Sides of asparagus and Brussels sprouts. The portion was huge and the three of us had leftovers for lunch the next day. Dessert was the salted caramel Pannacotta. My husband could have licked the plate. It's pricy here. Service is exquisite. Dinner for 3 with 2 bottles of wine (60 each) was 400 with tax and tip. I don't cringe at the bill any more because the food is worth every penny. read more
