Would also highly recommend the Kalua pork tacos. Smokey and tender. So so so good. Fish tacos were unfortunately a bit disappointing - mahi mahi was dry and not much sauce to help the situation. Visited the Lava Rock Cafe after a long day at Volcano's National Park. The place is relatively small, sort of dive bar feel. The food was pretty basic, Hawaiian diner vibe. I had ordered the ribs which were super chewy and the sides were pretty bland. My friend had ordered the mac-nut fish which she said was good. They had a little gift shop next door that sold their salad dressing that was really tasty and some other cute souvenirs. The place is perfect if you just wanna grab a bite or a brew, I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to visit but it was solid for what we were feeling. read more

This is the best meal we've had since arriving on the island five days ago! The food was really fresh and tasty and the atmosphere was friendly. The teriyaki chicken salad was especially good along with the bacon cheeseburger. Definitely would recommend and super close to Volcano National Park! Our table was next to a music set up, so there must be music sometime. I had the Portuguese sausage breakfast sandwich with eggs, cheddar cheese and three slices of sausage on a soft bun. It was as expected, nothing exceptional but well executed and tasty. My buddies had the bacon sandwiches, which were similar to mine, and a grilled cheese sandwich which looked a little thin. We were the only diners so the waitress was attentive and quick with service. We were trying to find a pizza place that was near this Cafe and couldn't so we ended up here. Service was good, the waitress was very nice. Food was good. My husband got the Mac nut mahi-mahi. It was a bit over coated and cook but he eat the entire plate. He had the Mac pasta as the side which is actually a potato salad with noodles. My son got the mahi-mahi fish tacos. They were a little plain for him but agin he devoured the entire plate. The others got the burgers which they liked but the fries were soggy. I got the Kalbi Ribs and they were delicious!! The food is missing a bit of its old touch compared to when we were there last year. I had the Swiss and mushroom burger. The server also appeared somewhat unhappy we didn't order any alcoholic drinks, but we just aren't drinkers. I have been on a journey across the world trying to find the best chicken wings, and finally, I have found one of the extremes of cuisine. This place has the absolute, hands down, WORST, wings of all time. Soggy, lukewarm, and flavorless They have achieved the absolute lowest level possible in the culinary world. I applaud the chef for his breathtaking research in this field. Truly a pioneer in terms of ripping off tourists. Imagine grocery store freezer section wings that are pre-seasoned in the bag. I went to the Cafe twice in one day. I know how it sounds but go ahead and judge me. (Edit: I have now gone 3x in two days) Part I (lunch) Music is ok at best and downright annoying for some songs. It is a mix of mediocre ukulele playing and yodeling over the top, not in beat or anything just over the top. Trust me or go give it a listen. I think sometimes they have live music, which I hope isn't more of the same. The food was good enough and they have separate breakfast lunch and dinner menu, it made me want to go for the trifecta of 3 meals in a row. The potato salad was less than great but the shrimp and krab sandwich was truly great and that surprises me because it is a terribly difficult dish to make. The breakfast menu looked amazing, but I didn't have the chance to try it. The meals get more expensive for the same food after 5pm so come for lunch. The service was less than great considering how empty the restaurant. Part II (dinner) I went back a second time in 1 day and I must say it was a mistake. The prices were higher for dinner despite serving the same food plus a few more options. I don't want to judge the service so I'll give you the facts and you can judge for yourself. The host handed us menu's when we walked in and our waitress waited so long to stop by the table that we ordered our food when we were supposed to order drinks. She delivered our food, but never filled drinks until when she brought out the check. Three total trips to the table. There were a few rowdy people at the bar and with the crappy music it killed the atmosphere. I wanted to like this place but mediocre food, high prices, and bad atmosphere destroy my hope's. Part 3 (lunch day 2) I got the shrimp and krab wrap which was good as per day 1 lunch. We had a different server and she was much better, brought a pitcher of water, refilled ketchup, etc. She was hovering around the table perfectly as a waitress should. It was about the same number of people each time I went so I am going to count the bad service as just one bad waitress and not the restaurant as a whole. I have since edited this review up to 3 stars as my final review. There are only a few options for eating in the area and this is a place you should try. A few additional notes. There is a nice shed of cats in the back of the restaurant next to the parking lot if you traveled all the way to Hawaii to see a bunch of semi-tame cats. There is a nice sunroom that extends the restaurant might be great for hosting a group of people. Popular spot for people to come in between hikes at the national park, and for locals to drink at the bar. A small gift shop across the way for those last minute gifts. Not a very large selection though. Stay dry and fly. read more

They were packed cuz a large tour group came in so we're only doing take out or wait a long time for a table. I came here with family after touring Volcano National Park near the east side of Big Island. Unfortunately, there aren't many dining options near the park and the tuk tuk thai food truck wasn't at its location on google maps and we decided to just come here before places to eat closed. Service was extremely slow and we waited about 30 minutes for food and there weren't many tables available since they have lots of reserved seats. Note that there's a bunch of things on the menu that are named oddly and have no explanation at all, so you'll need to ask the waiter to figure out what it is or what ingredients are in it (ex: ABC, Erupter, Paniolo). The food was extremely mediocre, nothing that really stood out. We got the chicken katsu, grilled mahi mahi, seafood platter, and taro burger with cheese. The mahi mahi was very bland and not seasoned much and the taro burger didn't really taste much like taro its pretty similar to a normal burger maybe a bit better than fast food. Pretty standard mac salad, rice, and broccoli came with all dishes. Overall not very impressed especially since the food is overpriced compared to quality read more

The food here was very good. My husband got the ola sized moco loco and it was huge! I ordered the bacon cheese burger with sweet potatoes fries and it was super yummy! The only issue was the service. They were pretty busy but they brought my cheeseburger with no cheese and it was very difficult to grab our waitress. I hate to say it, but this place sucks. My sister said we should go anywhere but here, but it turned out it was the only place open so we had no choice. They're very low staffed which isn't their fault, but don't trust whatever time they quote you. They told us 15 min for takeout and it took an hour. A few of our orders were incorrect, but after waiting so long, we just took everything and left. The burger I ordered was fine - edible. It had onions on it which I told them I needed left off due to an allergy. Fries, which I did not order, were undercooked. The garlic bread with the chicken Alfredo was a joke. Unfortunately there are not many places to eat in the Volcano area. This place could have a lot of potential the food is mediocre. You are pretty safe if you choose a burger. Could be a nice place to hang out and just have a drink or two but that's really not possible. The issue is the service, which I don't understand. It takes forever just to get somebody to take your order. They do not come back to check how your food was or to ask if you want another beverage. I thought that's where establishments make the most of their money was on beverage service, but who am I? So once you get your items you are on your own and to try to get the check is another story. Came here after full day at Volcano National Park. Happy to get some food. Was told that there is wait time of 30 minutes which was okay for us. There was some work party or something like that on so a lot of tables were full. ( it was really busy) we got our table when one group left. We got our water and we're waiting for our waitress who was hanging out checks etc to other tables. We waited for 30 minutes for the waitress. The waitress started with the people who came after us and when she got to our table never apologized for the wait we said finally it was a long wait and she just walked off to chit chat/ gossip with her coworkers about us. She came back and we ordered quickly as we all knew what we wanted. There were only three tables full including us. I ordered beer which I never got. Expectations are important here - Volcano village is a town of maybe 500 people, it has 8 total restaurants 2 of which have very irregular hours, and it's a global pandemic that has many places on the island short staffed. We had a bit of a wait to get in because they were saving space for a tour group of 12, some people in line got angry about this, we stayed chill and it was fine. Once we were seated staff was attentive and we got our food super fast. We both had burgers and they were tasty and filling. The curly fries were legit. They didn't have the full compliment of beers but we were able to find something suitable. The service was fine but the food wasn't good and the coffee was the worse we've had in many years.
