It's a funny story. I accidentally made appointment with the wrong office & dentists. It turned out to be a good experience. Staff (Summer & Remoa) were great & friendly. Been meeting to post a review for a while. They definitely have a system here where you get told u need expensive work every other visit. Lots of up charges on things, and I also felt very pressured to get an expensive treatment there, without time to research. He's a decent dentist, but I found an amazing one who isn't constantly charging for new procedures in my mouth. I left Volterra pissed because the wanted to td a root canal on 3 teeth that had 2 previous root canals. I went to Ria Guzman in Huntington Beach, so told me I didn't need the work done. I have been a patient in this office for YEARS. Up until this most recent experience and I would NOT recommend this office. As with most dental offices they call you and remind you of your yearly or 6 month cleanings. Well at this office they will schedule you beyond those "covered" cleanings and request you pay for them out of pocket AFTER you have had the treatment. Of course when I question my balance I am told it is my responsibility to track how many cleanings I have a year so I am aware. Regardless if they call me to schedule a cleanings. If I am not mistaken this pad billing was going on in this office prior to Dr. Blackburn taking over. I'm assuming the staff is back to it's old tricks and overcharging and padding services so they can make a buck. This is a horrible way to do business and it may not be illegal it is shameful. read more

They got new doctors since I was here last, he was very nice and my hygienist was great too. So this has nothing to do with the qualifications on staff or doctors. They were great. My only problem was I was doing a teeth cleaning without insurance, and they suggested to get my bite adjusted. Which helped I just didn't know it would cost be 440 for teeth cleaning and bite adjustment. I went in thinking I'd pay 150 or 175 I can't remember how much they quoted me for teeth cleaning. Then it went to 440 and I'm super broke as is. I just hate when that happens, they suggest something and I didn't know it would cost me 260 or more for a bite adjustment. Yes I should have insurance but I get shipped out in 2 weeks and get full coverage. I just planned on spending 150-175 maybe 200 max for this. So 440 was a hit to the gut for something they suggested :/ read more

Hadn't been to the Dentist since Covid ... two years plus is a lot time... so I was DREADING my Dental Cleaning/Check up appointment today. I arrived the typical 5-min before my 8am appointment and sat down... and a few things appeared different but I couldn't put my finger on it. My hygienist welcomed me at exactly 8:00, took me to our space, introduced herself, then proceeded with the X-rays and cleaning. After my cleaning she told me she'd lead me to another room where the Dentist would review my X-rays and talk about a few more things. I was taken aback when Dr. Blackburn stepped in... not because of his striking blue eyes but because I was expecting Dr. Art Laos. My dentist of 25 years. I asked Dr. Blackburn about Dr. Laos and he explained that Dr. Laos sold the practice 2-years ago. I must have missed that memo. Dr. Blackburn proceeded to tell me he'd reviewed my chart, and would do a full mouth cancer check, look at my teeth, and talk about possible work to be planned for the future. We talked about crowns I need... I asked him what his process was for the crown installation. Dr. Blackburn explained in detail the fitting for a crown, the temporary crown, and the final permanent crown. He explained he personally does all the installations. THIS WAS KEY. Most Dentists that are BIG practices leave that for one of the technicians. After my consultation was complete I had the opportunity to ask Dr. Blackburn a little more about his background and I loved how personable he was. I like to think I'm good judge of character and I truly feel that Dr. Blackburn is very much in line with what the prior practice used to be decades ago before it got so big and busy. Least professional dental office I've ever been to in my life. I am writing this review months after my experience at Volterra Dental: I'm new to the area and had heard good things about Volterra Dental from a co-worker, they said it was "nice", so I decided to come here off of a good recommendation. However my hopes and dreams of finding a nice new dentist to get bi-yearly teeth cleansing was falsely met with indignant treatment and unprofessionalism. From the Front desk who had some trouble processing the billing, but was prudent and very rude, though maybe without even realizing it; made me feel insignificant and indignant in a way that I had never felt before. What happened? The person tasked with billing and setting up another appointment not only assumed that I would want to return for another visit without any sort of dialogue, but ... During the billing the worker kept eyeing the door as if I were going to run away, which was strange to me. Though holding my tongue while I patiently waited for them to process my billing information. Given, I had just gotten off of work and might had a disheveled appearance. However I found this to be extremely unprofessional and is not how you should treat patients, especially new patients. - To the dental hygienist who was very unprofessional, full of snarky remarks and personal condemnation for the word "hella", nobody cares if you don't like that word what so ever. This is not high school, this is a professional dental office. If you can't be gracious or polite then.. yeah you might want to rethink your approach. Just because your age is close to the patients age doesn't mean you should feel the right to condemn them, or any patient for that matter ever. I'm sorry you feel that way. - The cleaning Itself was not very thorough, and could've been better. Overall, it was a prudent and in-dignifying experience to say the least. Could never ever could I have ever foreseen this type of treatment in a professional medical office. The cherry on top: I did leave some feedback in the follow up email I received following my visit, however Volterra Dental never reached out with an apology or rectifying statement or cause of any sort following the feedback they received. I wanted to find a new dentist office, but was pretty disappointed. They have got some growing to do.. I wish Volterra Dental luck in their endeavors of becoming a nice reputable dental office in the future. Dr Laos was my dentist for over 10 years. I did Invisalign in 2019 that cost just under $1200. I had not seen Dr Blackburn yet but called this week to order another set of my final retainers and set up a cleaning appointment. I was told they did not keep my records and it would be $500 for them to order another set of my retainers. They would need to scan my mouth again. Given that I have all the packaging and bar coding for my last set of Invisalign retainers and all they would need to do is place the order with Invisalign, $500 seemed ridiculous ... one set of retainers costing almost half of what it cost for 8 months of treatment. Now I need to call Invisalign again for help and find another dentist. Very disappointed. read more

Seriously love this office and Dr. Blackburn! I went back in for a filling and cosmetic bonding on my front teeth because I chipped my tooth. I had an annoying amount of questions because I wanted to make sure it looked good/the color blended with the other teeth. It was my front tooth they were working with so want to make sure it's perfect! Dr. Blackburn answered all my nervous questions and really did make me feel good about going through with it. Since the filling, I've gone back into Volterra to get my routine cleaning and checkups with Dr. Blackburn. He's funny and makes going to the dentist enjoyable. It doesn't hurt that he cracks a joke or two during the office visit. At least it puts me at ease. Dr. Blackburn and his staff are great. Definitely recommend going there. I needed to have a single tooth implant I researched and found that my dentist Dr. Blackburn was the best the care was outstanding. It was personalized most up-to-date materials and procedures. Everyone was meticulous, and every step of the procedure was explained clearly pricing was explained clearly, and was very fair. It was an amazing experience. For some thing I was very fearful of the entire office was professional, helpful, and well-informed. I cannot say enough good things about this practice. It's completely stellar, and I have been at a patient here for several years and have never found a better place, and as a sidenote, I'm a physician that worked in emergency rooms. Sadly, Dr. Richard Blackburn is the opposite of his wonderful predecessor, Dr. Arthur Laos. Dr. Blackburn's greed is worthy of less than a 1 rating. Can I give a '0' rating on Yelp? When one tooth of a 9-tooth upper partial broke off a week ago, I called Volterra Dental and asked for a time to see Dr. Laos & was told that Dr. Laos has sold his dental business to Richard Blackburn. The receptionist told me to come in at 11am the next morning, Oct 26. When I arrived, I was ushered back to a patient room where a dental asst came in, talked to me for a few minutes about the tooth needed to be recemented. In a few more minutes, Dr. Blackburn came in, talked to me for LESS THAN 5 minutes about that broken-off tooth and I asked for a quote for the recementing of that tooth and, also, for a 2-tooth stay-plate. He only said Misty, the dental asst, would get the 2 quotes that I had requested; then he left the room. He did NOT EVEN EXAMINE MY MOUTH. Next, after I waited for nearly 20 minutes, I got up and left that room because I had to get to the next dentist before noon to get a quote from him to recement the broken-off tooth. I stopped at the reception desk and asked Misty if she had a quote for both and she said 'No. Someone else is working on that' so I left given I had now been in their office for 45 minutes of which 35-40 was waiting and waiting and waiting. Later that day, I found a VM from someone at that office who said: 'Call us because we now have a quote AND you (I) owe us $75 for your 'office visit which was so pathetically greedy given they did not mention ANY cost to me when I called them the day before nor when I arrived, NOR did he/they perform any 'service' plus they kept me waiting and waiting and waiting soooo long for just a quote. To anyone reading this, BEWARE! Only if you WANT to LOSE money big time, should you go to this greedy dentist! I suppose I should be thankful that Blackburn showed me immediately how greedy he is Shame on Blackburn for being so greedy! Because of this experience, I advise go elsewhere like I did for fair prices of dental services! Btw, I not only saw the 2nd dentist that day right after going to Volterra Dental, but that dentist got the tooth recemented in 30 minutes(!) for $95 vs $280 which is what Misty at Volterra had told me JUST the repair of the broken-off tooth would cost! read more

Came here as a recommendation by few friends. I'm glad I listened to them! The hygienist Kristen and Dr. Laos were so friendly! They have a high-tech equipments too! One thing that stood out to me the most is that they take your blood pressure before starting a procedure! I never had any dental office do that and it's good to know that they are taking extra measures to make sure you are safe. Also, I love how they explain everything they are doing so that you never feel like you're in the dark about what is going on while they are working on your teeth! I have been a patient with Volterra Dental for about 3 years. I have been extremely fortunate to find a dentist that I trust, the quality of patient care, and the cosmetic experience that is second to none. When I was notified that a new dentist had taken over at Volterra I was a bit apprehensive about change. When meeting Dr. Blackburn my fears about a new dentist had vanished. Dr. Blackburn is very personable, highly compassionate regarding my anxiety of going to the dentist, and he is a fantastic dentist. He explained all options, explained everything in detail and most of all I felt nothing. Really not even the shot of lidocaine. It was a very pleasant experience. Fortunately I have not been to many dentists, but I have been to a few in my days. They typically are about as nice as giving blood. Friendly, efficient, and largely pain free. You are glad to be done, and don't look forward to coming back. Dr. Laos is a different kind of dentist. The office looks like it could be a lawyers. You definitely can tell you are at a different kind of office. The staff are all very friendly and professional. You don't get the feeling you are being rushed around or they prefer you not ask anything. Much different than my recent visit to another dentist and oral surgeon. There I felt like questions were frowned on as they tried to rush over to the next room. Once you are in the chair the staff is very friendly and not the least bit annoyed by questions. They don't mind talking and will make an effort to get to know you. They are very gentle and your comfort is a priority. Dr. Laos will spend time with you, explain what is being done, why, what he advises you do, etc. He is not the kind of doctor who stares at a chart, talks fast and makes you feel like patient number xyz. Overall it is a great experience. They take the time to do a great job, very light touch when working in your mouth, and care about their patients. Can you find a cheaper dentist? Probably, but remember the old saying: you get what you pay for. Do you really want the pain and inconvenience bad dentistry results in just to save a few bucks? This is something you don't want to do again or have go wrong. If you want it done right this is the kind of office to go to. read more

I was Referred to Dr. Laos by family and I'm so happy! I worked for a prominent dentist for 17 years and thought I had dental work to be proud of. I wasn't aware of the looming problems with most of his work. What i thought was so nice - is that Dr Laos did not put down any of my prior dental work ... and he didn't overwhelm me with all the new things that needed to be done- he explained to me what I needed to do first and we will work our way through ... a few months ago - I had my first hygiene visit with KELSI - she's the best and I'm pretty particular !!! I will make sure my entire family Comes to see her for future hygiene visits. I had my first crown with Dr Laos yesterday and again - I'm just Really happy with the work he has done. I couldn't feel anything and they are extremely thorough with everything they do. He even gave me time to rest in between which I really appreciate. Worse.....than "Not good"! I was another patient that was very disappointed that Dr. Laos left so abruptly. I went in to meet the new dentist because I was to have work done on front crowns that needed to be replaced. Though I didn't need my teeth cleaned, I was told I was getting my teeth cleaned. New girl...it was an odd cleaning...nothing like I was used to. I was sent to a desk where the woman there spoke to me for a VERY long time. I began to wonder what was going on. Finally, she said..."that's $1100 for today..."! I got dizzy and said "for getting my teeth cleaned"? She said it was a new "thing", and I was lucky to get it. Then she proceeded to talk for half an hour. The new doctor came over and introduced himself. The woman never stopped talking. I payed CASH, $11 one hundred dollar bills...never got an answer to "What are these prices?! This happened about ten months ago. I have visited four other dentists since then...had two more teeth cleanings. Today I received a bill from "Lori", at Volterra. It said, "Hi Kathleen, this is your balance after your insurance paid, Have a great day, , Lori. I don't have dental insurance. I paid her with one hundred dollar bills..eleven of them. He WON! Dr. Blackburn was right about a two year old dental mystery consuming the entire right side of my mouth. The diagnostician of 2021, according to me. However, he had a very supporting cast. Read on for more details, make an appointment if this is all u need to know. First up, the office staff of Caroline and Jenny. I was about to FIRE Volterra dentistry. I was suffering post dental pain for two years. The right side of my mouth had swollen gums and bleeding following a crown place 2 years ago. It was done just be for the pandemic. I had sensitivity that led to pain and lastly swelling preventing any flossing near or under the crown. In a follow up visit with another dentist 2 years ago, nothing was identified as problematic with the crown or it's placement. So I needed a third opinion. So I was not interested in the multiple invitation sent by Jenny or Caroline. However, Jenny call me on day I was desperate. She left another message to come in for services. So I called Jenny. In the back of my mind I really didn't want to go to Volterra. So I made the appointment thinking it will take 2-3 weeks. If I didn't find a dentist by then I would cancel. Nope! No luck. Jenny said how about tomorrow? I said ok. As I said I was desperate. When I arrived. I met Jenny and Caroline. Very warm and welcoming. Riley was up next, for the cleaning. She quickly identified the trouble area. Very kindly and gently she cleaned my teeth up. She's the one to go to folks! I'm looking forward to seeing her again when my gums are healthy and can be properly cleaned pain free, like the good old days. Stephanie did my X-rays. Poor lady. I gaged and fiend vomit three times as she took my pictures. I apologized but she reassured my no apologies needed as she expertly completed the task. Then she stopped and quietly asked me, do you feel like you are biting evenly? I told her maybe, yes, and I am not sure, which was true. I haven't eaten on that side in two years. My sensation in that area was off. Besides, I just finished with a goop of numbing agent during cleaning that had just worn off. Guess what, she was on to something. Dr, Blackburn came in with a "chair-side" manner that was friendly. He asked all the right questions and completed his evaluation. This was my chance. This was a new dentist! I can now get my third option about my pain. I told him my story and he said "I know what's wrong with your teeth" He proclaimed this in less than 10 minute's !!! I didn't believe him. Two dentists ALREADY looked at the area and claimed it to be good. You know what he came up with??? Improper biting onto the crown! Crown placement 101. It was easily fixed by sanding the crown down off the top!!! Then he confidently went on to say, in 3 days you will feel better. In 3 weeks you will be 85% back to normal. SAY WHAT? I didn't believe him after two years of pain. No chewing on that side, not being able to floss, and later not even a tooth brush could come near that area. I was so flabbergasted I said " if what you say is true, I will write a review on yelp!" He said you got a deal. As I was leaving Caroline and Jenny we so nice I decided I liked them and would come back just because of them. Everyone knows it's the office staff that can make or break a good experience. I made a follow up cleaning appointment with Caroline on day 3. I am now a patient of Dr. Blackburn. He was so right. Precisely in the third week my mouth is 85% of normal. I'm bushing with a warm soft brush. I'm beginning soft foods on that side. No sensitivities or pain. Whew! I love a good diagnostician. If you can't locate the problem there is no fix. As such with me, two years no diagnosis, no fix. I wished I would've come when Jenny first called me a year read more

I love this whole office! Came in needing major restorations done including crowns and was so fearful of the all the work and the pain I was going to have to go through. However, Dr. Laos and staff completely put me at ease at every single appointment! They made sure every visit went smoothly....the headphones were a nice touch! They were honest and upfront. I had my wisdom teeth extracted (or attempted to be extracted) here last summer. It was an awful ordeal that lasted 3 hours, only one tooth was taken out. The other was stuck and the doctor working on me walked me down the street to the Oral Surgeon office next door (it was such a bizarre experience). At least they were able to admit defeat and pass me on to an expert. Luckily Dr. Lee next door knew what he was doing and took the last tooth out within 15 minutes. I would elaborate on the story, but it was just a bad situation and I barely want to think about it again. Please just ask a lot of questions before you have your wisdom teeth taken out here, OR you might also be chauffeured down the street to more experienced professionals. I especially thought it was strange that I only got 1 follow-up call from them regarding a prescription, meanwhile Dr. Lee's office called me multiple times and were very helpful. :/ Did I mention it took forever for my mouth to heal? BEST DENTIST IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA! I was very unhappy with my previous dentist and while looking for a good dentist, a friend of mine recommended Dr. Laos office. Dr. Laos and Dr. Neglia are amazing. I came in for a extensive cleaning and check up. Dr. Neglia's extensive knowledge and friendly demeanor left me leaving very happy. Come to my surprise, he spent over 30 minutes with me at my first appointment just listening to my needs and explaining my treatment. I am very pleased. Plus they gave me a really nice blanket as a new patient gift!!! This office very elegant, clean, and well kept. It does not have that chain dental, rushed, patient after patient feel. You feel like each and every one of the employees care for you. (as they do!) and it made me feel comfortable. I had heard good things about Volterra and they were my first choice when looking for a dentist in the area. I called ahead to make sure they took my insurance and was told that they offer a complimentary initial consultation. What I didn't realize was this meant that they would let you come in so they can check if they accepted your insurance. Turns out they don't accept any HMOs, which seems like a very easy thing to say over the phone. I was told they are "trained not to discuss any insurance questions over the phone", but instead waste my time scheduling an appointment to physically come so they can tell me "we don't accept any HMOs" and set my search for a dentist back over a week. I hope that someone with a HMO or PPO they don't accept reads this and is able to save some time by looking elsewhere. read more

I got 3 wisdom teeth extracted today by Dr. Naglia. He was great! Aside from the very tiny and quick pinch of the numbing needle it was painless. He and the assistant knew exactly what they were doing. I was in and out in about 1 hr and 15 minutes...That's right! Growing up, I never understood why my friends were so afraid to go to the dentist. My dentist was so nice, calm and gentle... my hygienist was so warm and mom-like... there really was nothing to fear. I was just fortunate, I guess, that my parents decided to take me to Dr. Laos's office back in 1987, and rebooked my appointments like clockwork every six months. For serious, I've gone to this practice for 26 years now. Other than family, there's no one that's been in my life for that long! Ginger is hands-down the best hygienist I've seen (I used to book extra cleanings with her during my brace-face days), she's got a great attention to detail and really cares about making sure that you are comfortable during the procedures. I've had my fair share of dental work done here - fillings, capping a chip in my front tooth - and members of my family have had more extensive work done as well, and Dr. Laos and his staff are fantastic and efficient. Even though he's not a pediatric dentist, he's great with kids - I was 19 before I realized that he was giving me shots in my mouth for my fillings! This is the best dentist I've ever had! The staff is extremely friendly. All the dental assistants are extremely nice as well. One of the best parts is they talk you through everything, explaining exactly what they are going to do, how they will do it, what you will feel, what the effects are, its great. Dr. Arthur Laos is an excellent dentist and it's because of him that I have all of my teeth. I love that he is never rushed and is meticulous at his work. His new office manager Christine is professional, kind, polite and a gem. It is a pleasure to be greeted by her and all of the caring staff at Voltera Dental. I've been going to this office for many years and I am so happy and fortunate to have found this office. I'm new to the area and and hadn't gotten around to finding a dentist. I Woke up with tooth pain, and had to ask a few people at work who they would recommend. 3 different people mentioned Volterra Dental. I called the office and was able to see the Dentist within 2 hours time. The staff was so friendly and the Dr. is amazing. He was able to answer all my questions. I had an emergency few months ago. My wisdom teeth was infected and had to see a dentist right away. I made few calls but no one could take me. I had call this office around noonish and at first they said they were book and I told the receptionis that I was in so much pain she then asked the Dr. If they can squeeze me in... they were very accommodating they did see me. Just to find out this clinic is 10 steps away from my house :-). As soon as I came in the hospitality was Excellent....I fell in love with the people right away....Dr.Naglia and his assistant made me feel safe cuz I was a little nervous. The process was quick and they were very caring. Now afterwards everytime I have concerns I would message Dr Naglia and he was very attentive and would reply ASAP. I Highly Highly highly recommend this place to everyone.....I have never been to a dental office that is very peaceful, caring, and do an Excellent job.
