We have had several volvos from a 1972 1800 ES, 245 wagon, 740, C70 and now 2 2007 XC90s. Volvo Am I has worked on all of them and has always done a great job keeping them running like new. No matter what the job, rebuilt engine, Rebuilt Transmission or just replace parts that give out from old age, wear and use. We had many years ago tried Volvo dealerships work on our cars but half the time we had them do more harm than good. Like on our 1800 ES putting in 2 QT of oil more than it should have. At Volvo am I we have NEVER had a problem with them, the quality of their service, the parts they needed to install or the service to keep the car running like new. We live 3 hours away from Phoenix now, but we still bring our XC90s down to have them work on them. read more

I'm looking to buy my second used Volvo and would only consider it because of this shop. Everyone else ripped me off or did not fix it.

I brought my 2018 Volvo XC90 to Volvo Am I for an evaluation. What I got was a $175 diagnostic fee that was never disclosed upfront -- I was simply asked to write my name and phone number on a blank piece of paper with no terms, no estimate, and no mention of any charge -- and a day later I had a quote for roughly $10,000 in additional repairs. When I picked up my car, I made the mistake of sharing my frustration with the person checking me out -- a guy whose name starts with T. I calmly mentioned that I've spent approximately $25,000 in repairs over the last 2.5 years and that a $70,000 total cost of ownership on a vehicle I paid $45,000 for was disappointing. Instead of any acknowledgment, T decided to argue with me. He told me this was "common with most car makers these days" and launched into some story about a GM truck he'd read about on a blog. When I mentioned that Volvo repairs seem particularly expensive compared to other brands, he flatly told me I was wrong -- that all car makes cost about the same to fix as a Volvo. Anyone who has ever compared a Volvo repair bill to a Honda or Toyota knows that is simply not true. It got worse. When I mentioned that I'd paid $9,300 for a new AC system, he essentially accused me of making it up, saying "I know what they charge around here." When I told him I knew too -- because I paid the bill -- he pivoted to "well, you must have needed a new compressor also," as if he needed to find a way to explain away my own experience to me. The cherry on top: when I mentioned I was thinking about selling the car and asked for advice, T told me I should sign it over to him. When I asked if he was actually interested in purchasing it for $4,000-$5,000 -- roughly $10,000 below KBB value, a more than fair offer given the needed repairs -- he half-laughed and said "No, for $0." So after spending the entire interaction dismissing my concerns, telling me my repair costs were normal, and arguing that Volvos aren't expensive to maintain, he wouldn't even consider buying it at a steep discount. Instead, he wanted it for nothing. At that point it stopped feeling like bad customer service and started feeling like he was trying to take advantage of me. The whole interaction felt combative, condescending, and unprofessional. I wasn't looking for a discount or a handout. I was a customer expressing frustration, and T treated it like a debate he needed to win -- and then tried to get a free car out of it. To be fair, the other person I dealt with when I checked in was friendly and professional. My only issue with him was the undisclosed $175 fee -- which is a business practices issue, not a personality one. I won't be returning. read more

I had a deeply disappointing and distressing experience at this shop and feel compelled to share what happened so others may approach with eyes open. I brought my Volvo in for a serpentine belt replacement, which was quoted at $127. Once on the lot, I was told the vehicle needed several additional repairs--some of which were explained in vague terms or not at all, even after multiple requests for clarification (e.g., the water pump). I was then required to prepay for all parts and labor up front, including work that had not yet been performed--to the tune of MORE THAN TEN TIMES the quote. This struck me as unusual and concerning. After two hours' reflection, I called back to cancel all services except the quoted belt replacement. The owner confirmed this over the phone. When I returned to pick up my car, the owner informed me that I would owe an additional $36 to cover his credit card processing fees--despite no prior mention of such a charge. I calmly explained I could not accept this retroactive fee and expected a refund for the canceled work, minus the $127 for the belt repair. In response, he told me I would not be getting my car back. He then stood up, walked out of the office, and when I followed to ask where he was going, he began yelling and stepping aggressively toward me. I told him not to step toward me as it felt threatening, backed into the wall, and stated I would be calling the police. His reply: "Go ahead. Call the police." I did. While I was on the phone with both the police and my credit card company, the owner eventually returned with my keys, a check refund, and a receipt. He told me to "get off my property." I left with the vehicle, shaken but relieved. Summary: While I'm grateful the serpentine belt work was completed, the overall experience was unhelpful, unprofessional, and unacceptable. I cannot recommend this business in good conscience. There are other Volvo specialists in the Valley who operate with transparency, respect, and customer care. I regret trusting this shop with my vehicle. read more

I am glad I found this place in Phoenix. I have struggled to find appropriate maintenance to my vehicle as there is a lack of knowledgeable service providers apart from the somewhat expensive original Volvo dealers. Nevertheless, the latter ones are a bit of an overkill for a 14-year old vehicle. Volvo am I focuses on Volvos, and knows thus exactly their business. They did absolutely fantastic work, spotting also a slightly critical issue with the axle that the previous place overlooked, and had it fixed faster than I expected yet with a very decent cost. This is the only place I will ever take my Volvos for repair. Ted is straightforward, fair and incredibly quick in turning around repair time. The conscientious, no BS approach is a far cry from what one receives at the "dealership" service department. At Volvo am I there no 'writers', that is someone to intake your car and maximize the amount charged to get your car back to you. At Volvo am I there is Ted, the owner, the in-taker and the mechanic. Before my sparkly new Honda Element SC, I was eternally betrothed (guess not!) to Volvo wagons (Volvo XC remains my dream car... I'm an incredible bore in real life, I promise). Both of which had this funny habit of breaking all the goddamn time, surely not because of my penchant for not only playing tag with shopping carts in my college days but also the whole speeding and driving recklessly thing. So, needless to say, I spent a lot of time here. They do a great job (as in, I never had to repair the same thing twice), were honest ("Look, your car's falling apart. Period. The most we can do is slap some silicon on it and charge you $5 for the trouble."), and charged a fair price. I highly recommend for Volvo nuts like myself. read more

I am on my second V70 (along with my first 855) and Ted and Stan have taken very good care of them. Always accommodating and work with my schedule, even my emergencies. Ted takes the time to discuss the issues and offer solutions. I do most of my own maintenance, but Ted handles the big stuff and anything requiring a scan tool or computer. I took my teenage daughter's 1996 960 here late this last summer because it wouldn't pass emissions due to both oxygen sensors (allegedly) being dead. So I turn to the Volvo specialists I've used lots of times before for my own Volvo with few issues...except perhaps for the uncomfortable, stony silence they give you when your budget is bottomed out and you politely decline one of their suggested, additional services while embarrassedly explaining that you'll have to wait to get it done until you have more money. Very uncomfortable. So I'm thinking, no problem, these guys know their stuff, right? Apparently it *was* a problem, because after I made an appointment and dropped off my daughter's car, it took them 3 weeks and over $600 and the car STILL doesn't run! :/ Adding to this, my husband and I had to call every few days and ask for an update on the car because we weren't being updated on the progress of the repair at all. Have you ever had to placate an impatient 17 year old girl who needs her car to get to and from school? It's living hell. In fact, during one of the calls I made about the car's status, I discovered that they had replaced both oxygen sensors but that wasn't the problem, but they thought they had sorted out what the new hold up was but that nobody had gotten around to calling us to let us know any of this yet, and when I authorized them over the phone to address the new issue the response to me was "Well, we have all these other cars ahead of you now". Wait...what? Am I not ALSO a paying customer that also had an appointment? How did I suddenly lose my place in 'line' behind all these other customers? Shouldn't you finish my car before starting work on a different car? :/ So yeah, after 3 weeks and over $600 they finally declared that they just didn't know what else to do with it and we paid our bill and picked up the car. Fast forward a few months and it still hasn't passed emissions and just sits in my driveway, covered in dust, because I gave Volvo Am I all the money we could scrape together to sink into it and now I'm nervous to spend another penny since they couldn't figure it out the first time. I'm not sure if I'm more offended that they thought we could afford repairs approaching half of the value of the car, or that we didn't deserve any follow up communications on the repair status, or that when I called to find out what was going on I discovered that we'd been dropped to the back of the line for no discernible reason whatsoever. So yeah, I'm no longer a happy customer. read more

I am not really sure why/how they get bad reviews, I chalk that up to a random bad day! My husband and I have been going here for about 5/6 years now! My only regret is that we didn't find them sooner!!!! I love my Volvo, but sometimes the cost to repair/maintain can be a lot. Enter the awesome dudes at Volvo Am I! They are nice, friendly, fast and HONEST! They never try to "up sell" me on anything,however they do let me know what will need to be worked on and in a timeline so I can budget or prepare for the future. They never treat me badly for not doing all repairs at one and for that I a very thankful of their understanding... Not only are they understanding, but their prices are reasonable and less than 4/5 other places I have taken my car I the past! I also loved that they are a small business... But,don't let that fool you. These professionals all worked at the Volvo dealership together back in the day and then decided to work for themselves! I'm telling you THIS is where you need to go! My husband and I are in the process of buying a new car. We are thinking of stepping away from the Volvo name for better gas mileage... However, the thought of having to find an honest,trustworthy,cheap,friendly, local business for car maintenance stresses me out and so, I may buy another Volvo! Failed to register a warranty on replacement engine then denied responsibility! Cost me $$$$ I took my 98 Volvo here for years and was satisfied with the care until about 3 years ago. I took it in for an oil change because I was driving out to San Diego and I think they overfilled the oil. The head gaskets blew as I was returning from SD and I towed it to Volvo Am I. They replaced the engine using a vendor I requested because the warranty offered was better than the one Volvo Am I offered through their vendor. The entire bill was about $4400.00 for engine and tranny and Ted kept the car at the business until I was able to pay the entire amount, about three months after the work was finished, which was OK by me. About a year after the engine was replaced the new engine was running poorly and I took it to a different mechanic. He discovered there were problems with the engine that were covered by the warranty. I went back to Volvo Am I and got the receipts and warranty info to discover that Ted never registered the warranty. Ted told me that it was not his responsibility. This was not true! He bought the engine and had possession of the car and paperwork during the ten day registration window! Only he could have registered the warranty during that time. The only thing that bothers me is his denial....very unethical and unprofessional read more

Dishonest! I feel like this guy was especially rude towards women. Instead of looking at the car and diagnose the problem they noticed the dealer sticker and called up the dealer to see what they diagnosed. Lazy and dumb! The dealer called me to let me know. Then they tried to overcharge me by $1000 by stating the Ac compressor could be bad (Ac compressor was fine!) and didn't even diagnose the problem to begin with! When I went to pick up my car and told them I didn't want them doing any work on it they acted shocked and said it wasn't ready, then tried to charge me a diagnostic fee when they didn't even look at it.
