Respect! respect is mutually earned, you give respect and you earn respect and this is what Von Chan lacked in my conversation last week. Here's what happened. I have had several dental appointments Von Chan's dental practice and while for the most part I have been happy with the experience, the office staff is friendly and Von Chan is an educated Dr. that has done good work. I have paid her and her practice thousands of dollars in cash in return for her services "mutual respect". Here are my issues and why I have written this review: 1. General dentistry has this rule that if you have a cavity in ONE tooth and that cavity is visible on two surfaces of that tooth then they charge you TWICE! one cavity two charges? this is nothing short of robbery! I don't care if you all got together at some convention and decided to do this its still WRONG. I can not change the dental industry but I will make sure I do not pay twice for one filling every again as i have already found a Dentist that agrees with me and does not charge for twice for one filling. 2. Dr. Chan referred me to a local dentist that does root canals, she stated that it should cost between $1200 and $1600 for this procedure because I have a crown on the tooth. The Dr. I went to was great and they did an excellent job, my total bill was for $2025 more than Von Chan's referral estimate but again I did have a crown on the tooth and the Dr. was able to save it. Once I was done with this procedure I then received a call from Von Chan's office to schedule an appointment to fill the tooth that I had just received a root canal in, I said " I don't understand why I would have to come back to you office to fill the tooth" they explained that it was normal and of course I said "I do not understand why I would have to, the doctor who did the root canal filled the tooth?" Von Chan's assistant then said oh ok well I guess you don't need it" she then said your due for a cleaning can I set up an appointment I said yes and that was done. 3. The appointment was set up and I put it into my calendar, unfortunately I missed my appointment, I received a call from the office and they said "oh we understand can we make another appointment, I said my schedule is crazy right now with kids out of school and new restaurants opening so I am not sure when I will be able to, the assistant said "oh well lets make it for later in the summer then and I agreed and said to let me know when it was through their text app. I received a notification on my text and called them back and said I was out of town on a business emergency meeting, again she said ok lets reschedule and I said no not know its too busy and I do not have a set schedule of work, I said I would call back when work calms down". The assistant said OK and that was that. Last Monday I received a bill form Von Chan's office for $50 for a missed appointment, I was not happy to say the least. I called the office and Von Chan answered the phone and I explained why I was calling, she said "oh did you miss an appointment" I said "yes I did" and she said "well thats why you were charged" I explained the reason and she then said "well it doesn't sound like you respect our time" which I replied and said that i did and in fact I called and told them I was not going to make the appointment. Instead of considering that I have been a good patient and always paid for services the day they were rendered Von Chan was persistent that i did not respect her time? this had nothing to do with the missed appointment, life happens sometimes appointments are missed some people miss appointments deliberately however when an emergency arises at work and a appointment is missed and it is communicated that it would be missed then a $50 bill is a shocker! Von Chan clearly does NOT RESPECT my business because if she did she would have known that I am a great patient who's pays on time and would continue to be a great patient in the future. Common sense would predicate that the assistant would at least warn the patient about a $50 fee for a missed appointment however she did not, I was never told in either call that i would be charged a fee, in fact there is NO PLACE ON THEIR WEBSITE that says patients will be charged for missed appointments. Chronic missed appointments, non communication regarding missed appointments, dead beat patients that do not pay on time? I understand, I am not any of those Von Chan has lost my future business because she has horrible "bed side manor" she clearly does not need the business if she is insisting on charging a $50 fee from patients that she makes a lot of money on. I have researched the "industry standard" for Dentist's and their missed appointment fees, they should be posted everywhere and there is no mention of any missed fee policy on their web site at all, I will not pay the fee and have fired Von Chan, I have a new dentist and will see them in two weeks. read more

It didn't work out...was disappointed as was highly recommended after my dentist of 26 years retired. However, the staff is friendly and it is a modern and professional environment. read more

First - I don't give anything a 5 star review. If you see my reviews - I am picky and hard to please. With that said, I hated all dentists - crooked, mis diagnosis, unpleasant to be around etc. Then I tried Dr Chan as I ran out of dentists to try. That was around 10 years ago or so. She is the best period. After trying her a few times and I seeing the enormous effort, professionalism, and hard work she put into her practice, I brought my entire family in to have in to take care of all their dental needs. We are all very pleased. Her goal, that she works tirelessly to achieve, is to make her practice the best in the area. I would say she is the best in the state. If you are looking for a good dentist - try Dr Von Chan. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Not only is she amazing, she does everything she can to bring in the best staff possible. I have appointments for cleaning 2-3 times per year and look forward to having Mary clean my teeth. If I am giving her and her staff 5 stars, you can be assure you will not be disappointed. 5 stars is very hard to do - especially after ten years. read more

After having a terrible time finding a kind and compassionate dentist, I finally found Dr. Major. I was thrilled. Recommended her to everyone I knew. She recommend my treatment include a procedure that needed to be handled by and Oral Surgeon. Unfortunately, that Oral Surgeon was not willing to work with me as a patient and as a result, Dr. Major in turn terminated our doctor/patient relationship because the work exclusively with that Oral Surgeon. Seems short sighted and limiting and results in a loss of thousands of dollars worth of revenue. I am, needless to say, very disappointed. read more

Dr. Von Chan has without question - one of the most beautiful dental offices I have ever seen. From the moment you walk into her reception area until the moment you leave - the overall experience can be summed up in just one word: "Wow." Her office staff is also very professional, very friendly and they do everything possible to make your visit a comfortable one. Her office manager (Judy) is at the very "top of her game" and will make you feel like one of her family. Dr. Chan herself is a true delight and has a wonderful smile that will "light up your day" no matter how much pain you are having with your teeth. I have been a long time patient of this practice and wanted to take the time to very briefly convey a little information about my last visit. Let me preface this review by saying I have an irrational fear of the dentist. I was in there two weeks ago for a significant procedure involving several items (as a result of not going in almost 2 years). The staff did a great job in explaining to me the procedure, outlining my expectations for pain management both during and after (of which there was surprisingly little). They took me right on time and I exited the office just as planned. Those of you who know me, will understand the fact that I am even writing about a dental procedure and experience, speaks volumes.... let alone a glowing review. I hope to never experience that procedure again..... but if I do, it will be there. read more

Limited Ofc. hr's., 3 day week., irregular sched. Book month's in adv. NO AFTN., NO EVE., NO WKND. Ofc. Mgr., EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE, RUDE, SNARK-O-MATIC! Patent's joke about her, god complex. Thank you for providing the best dental experience of my life! I was impressed with every aspect of your practice. The facility was clean, modern, and beautiful. The best part was the staff. Everyone was super-nice and helpful -- the front of the office (Laurie & Judy), the assistants (Kelly & Gretchen), and of course Dr. Chan. One of the best dental practice in Petaluma. Staff is great! This is a group of very caring and friendly people. Office is modern and clean. I can't say enough good things about this place. I had two crowns done by Dr. Major and I have to say I'm so thankful they have a crown milling machine there. The process was long but so convenient since I didn't have to come back for another visit where in most cases a temporary is put in and a second visit is required for permanent crown. I use to dread going to the dentist but thankfully my experiences at this office have all been pleasant. Dr. Major and staff are all amazing. read more

If you are one of the people that are putting off your teeth needs due to Covid well... DONT. You only get one pair of teeth and they deserve to be treated better -- just cause there is a pandemic does not mean you get to neglect your dental hygiene. I was hesitant going back to the dentist due to Corona but Dr. Chan's office was absolutely spotless and they followed proper Covid protocols. I came here from San Jose based on recommendation from a friend and the appointment did not disappoint. You do not have to wait in the waiting room, instead you wait in your car and are called to come in. All of the seating is cleaned and Dr. Chan was very meticulously covered and washed and sanitized her hands. Also, they have television screens above the chairs to allow you to watch whatever you want while they work on your teeth -- how cool is that. Additionally, the receptionist is very sweet and handled my complicated case with my insurance. Dr. Chan herself is so lovely -- she does not teeth shame and does not make you feel bad for missing a flossing here and there. I plan on bringing my parents here too since they are long overdue for a check up. read more

A friend likes to say, "If it's too good to be true, it is." This morning, amid my first full 2 hour treatment after the 2 hour exam last week (Yelped previously), Dr. Amanda Major and assistant Emma provided such superb, comfortable, extensive, expert teamwork that the aforementioned aphorism is hereby negated. The five yelp stars is simply not equal to such state-of-the-art dentistry. At every opportunity throughout the treatment, my comfort was attended with personal care better than any flight or restaurant. And to complement the professional care, I watched the movie "Argo" on an overhead screen with superb cordless headphones. I does NOT get any better than this! read more

The first thing I noticed was how beautiful and upscale the office was! I was warmly greeted when I entered, and there was a huge drink station with SO many choices while I waited. I was given a tour of the entire office as I was a first time patient, and everything was explained beautifully. My dental assistant (I feel awful for forgetting her name!) was so kind, very attentive and helpful, and made the process such an easy one for me. Dr. Chan was also very thorough, direct and kind during my checkup and cleaning. She was understanding of my dental needs and offered me a great deal on a mouth guard to help me from grinding my teeth at night. They were able to work with my insurance and made the entire process easy for me. I'll be back when it's time to get another cleaning and fill my cavities! read more

I have had dental phobia since I was a child. I found Dr. Chan while searching for providers that were covered by my insurance. After reading some positive reviews I decided to try them out. I was not disappointed. Everyone from the front desk to the back of the dental office was very nice and professional. I get emails and calls for reminders and to check up on me after a procedure. I am a BIG chicken when it comes to going to the dentist. I had a horrible toothache and it turns out I needed a root canal! Dr. Von Chan is WONDERFUL! I put on those cool movie glasses and they were as gentle as could be. They explained everything to me and kept checking how I was doing while they were doing the procedure. NO ONE likes having dental work, but I must admit, if you must, and we all do, this is a great place to go. Clean office, super friendly staff and a gentle experience. Best dental practice ever. I have severe fear of dentists, but don't like drugs, so I have just toughed it out my entire life. I've had some good dentists, even great dentists, but Dr. Chan's practice is the best. They are gentle, highly skilled, and use the latest methods. And they listen to you. They handle insurance billing so you don't have to, and they take CareCredit for services that cost $300 or more. Mary took care of my cleaning and she was amazing. She explained everything clearly. Mary was gentle and repeatedly checked to make sure I was comfortable. She gave me the most thorough cleaning I have ever received. She clearly takes pride in her work and knows her stuff. Dr. Crowley then examined my teeth. When Dr. Bush retired, he advised me that he had contacted the dental schools in San Francisco to find who they considered the best recent graduates. I read the great reviews and have been going to this office three years. Was surprised by their aggressive style wanting me to have a teeth cleaning every 6 months despite their notes saying I only want a once a year cleaning. Just went for my annual cleaning and before looking in my mouth they filled my mouth, threw the big heavy jacket on me and started taking side xrays without consulting me about this surprise addition. It did up their gross profit by 35% but I will find a dentist who includes me in the decision making process about procedures on my body. read more

#1 Dentist Office!! After my first appointment, I couldn't stop talking about what a great experience I had. Co-workers and family members ultimately decided to make appointments and have had nothing but great comments (including one who is terrified of the dentist). The staff and dentists make you feel like part of a family. They make sure that you are comfortable and that all questions or concerns are addressed. I've had my share of bad experience with dentists, so trying a new one I'm always skeptical. I have been searching for the perfect dentist for YEARS, and I have finally found it. I waiting until after I had my fillings done to write this review so I can actually speak on how the procedure went... And I must say it was awesome. My first appointment was wonderful, I walked in and instantly fell in love with the environment and people who worked there. I love that the office is all paperless and new technology. Dr Major actually took pictures of my teeth and showed them to me so I could understand what she was seeing. This dental office isn't about taking your money and doing whatever they can to get you back in there, all the woman in there are actually genuine caring souls and just want you to have a good experience and healthy teeth.I went in to get two cavities filled today and the entire experience was great (yes, great) I was so numbed up I didn't feel a thing and I had a big cozy blanket and I seriously almost feel asleep a couple times, Dr Major was so gentle and continually asked if I was doing alright. Dr. Von Chan and Clair Tyler have the best dentist office in Petaluma and argubally everywhere else as well. They have a very friendly staff who always make you welcome, comfortable and relaxed. The cleanings and procedures are always done with care and they always explain the procedure in detail and constanty check if you are doing okay. I've had some tricky work which I was nervous about and it turned out to be rather plesasent. When you walk into the office there is a sign telling the patients to yelp with good reviews. I am stuck paying the full amount of a bill because my dental coverage isn't covered by there office. They say it is my responsibility to know that first not theirs. The hygienist did x-rays even though I said I did not want my daughter to have them. She did not make my daughter feel comfortable and threatened her that she would get fired if she didn't do a good job because my daughter wasn't cooperating. The dentist walked in and tried to convince me that my daughter needs to do plastic codings on all her molars when they come in. This office just wants do rip people off. I could hear other patients getting cavities filled the whole time. There wasn't privacy between the rooms. I could see and hear other patients. read more

I'm always treated with friendly professionalism and made to feel comfortable. The Dr Here is Great, visibly Professional and Good at what she Does. I had an excellent first experience at this office, it is truly a beautiful setting and her hygienist was so sweet. However, when I called to follow up on my treatment (when I was calling due to severe pain) I was not treated professionally or as I would treat someone who is hurting. I was simply requesting a copy of my treatment to view, I am not certain what the problem was but her tone got very unprofessional. The front office who answered the phone was sarcastic, demeaning, and just generally made me feel uncomfortable. She appeared more worried about her Dr's schedule then when I could possibly make it in to relieve this horrible pain. I simply hung up and took my business elsewhere. Unfortunate that one bad experience like this or one bad phone call can make you lose a patient who could be thousands of dollars in future business. I wont be recommending this office to any family or friends of mine, I would take a friendly Dr and Office Staff over the look of the Practice anyday. read more

Dr. Chan has been my dentist for about 4 years, and I have a great experience here every time I visit. Mary is a phenomenal hygienist - super gentle, and at the same time gets my teeth soooo clean. She's a great listener and so good at what she does. I actually look forward to going to the dentist now! The office has all the latest technology - they show you instant photos up on a screen of any tooth/gum issue they want you to be aware of, so you have a full understanding of why they are recommending a particular treatment. During longer procedures you can watch movies on special glasses/earphones. Dr. Chan is extremely professional and knowledgable and always explains what she's seeing and recommending really well. After each visit, I feel like I have a full understanding of my oral health and all the options available to me. I would (and do!) recommend Dr. Chan and this dental practice to everyone. read more
