This Vons is alright. I left a poor review when I first moved to Costa Mesa a year ago because I went on a VERY off night. I have been here since and the staff is helpful and shelves stocked. I think they might be been understaffed that when I had that poor experience. They have a great alcohol selection and some pretty decent produce. read more

What a Fuc_ _ _ _ Disaster! Lunch rush with a whopping 2 lanes and the express 15 items or under lane open. The 2 lanes barely moved, could the checkers (if they are still called that) been any slower? Or any unhappier? The express lane was certainly not express from what I saw. Finally, another employee comes around to open a lane and the other lady checker is bitching about her day to her, instead of working ... unbelievable! As far as the actual market, etc. itself, it's pretty large, a decent selection of items, the fresh fruit & veggies look pretty good (although I've been so spoiled re fruit from farmer's markets now), but the deli section is another embarassment. Low quality on meats, cheeses, breads, etc. You get what you pay for. I also noticed that there was nobody out there in deli, but that the employees were in the back chatting, and just look out the window once in awhile to see if they need to drag themselves out and work. And you wonder why unions are going down?! Fried Chicken - Overpriced and just no. Salads, etc. in Deli Case - overpriced and mostly just crap. Olive Bar - Overpriced considering the low quality of the olives and feta cheese. The marinades were just inedible in my opinion. So I guess using your Vons card to save some money will work if you need to buy regular old typical grocery items, but I'd save your money and eat elsewhere in regards to deli, etc. read more

Horrible experience. There customer service is pathetic. I was trying to get a money order at the service desk. Four employees right there on the registers next to me. No one even noticed that I was waiting around like a idiot. Finally I had to say excuse me excuse me several times, practically yelling. One girl is talking to another, and it looks like she's not even hearing me. Finally she walks to my direction with absolutely no urgency in her at all. I ask about the money orders. She says there not gonna be back till 3. It's 2 at the time. I told her why is no one noticing that I'm here. She doesn't even respond. Sad sad sad. Yes, the Vons has everything you could expect from a major grocery store. That is not my complaint. The Vons' leadership needs to focus on their employees interaction. The customer service at this Vons is very poor. I only go here under extreme needs because of the poor quality of service. The checkout workers are more concerned when their next break is going to be than making the shoppers experience unique and personable. The workers are just going to sit on the tables in front of the store and smoke their cigs? Why don't they just go to the back of the store? The rehearsed and meaningless interaction of the checkout workers are worthless and disengaging. Here is an example of my last experience at Vons. Worker #1 (no eye contact): Did you find everything OK? Me: Yep Worker #1 (Yelling across to the next checkout counter): I haven't gotten my last break. A grocery store is a grocery store, right? All groceries stores are created equal? Wrong! I really don't like the grocery stores around me in Irvine, so I make the quick trip up the 405 to this one, because I really like this store. Everything is organized well, the produce never looks like it's about 5 days past ripe, and they have a great selection of various items. I do all of my basic grocery shopping here. It's always clean and if you go late at night, there are never too many people so you won't have to deal with lines. I bought a small sunflower arrangement yesterday. The water spilled in my car and now my whole car smells like fish! I returned the flowers today at approximately 12:30. I had the receipt and explained to the manager that the new water and the vase smell like fish and my car now smells like fish. She told me sunflowers smell like fish. I used to be poor. Really poor. It taught me to shop up the street at Food4Less. I'm not poor anymore, but I still shop there. Why spend $ you don't have to? But we're on Atkin's, so I broke my ban on other markets and came here looking for higher quality proteins. I found some great cuts.The prices of some of them didn't actually cause heart palpitations. It's a nice store, with nice selection. Attitude, Dirty and Clueless Customer Service: * Checker was not interested in helping cash my Lottery tickets. I waited in the line specifically intended for service items and nobody helped and a manager came by and told me to get in the check out lane and the checker would help me. My turn came up and the checker told me to get out of his line and go back and wait in the other "service" lane. I told the checker a manager said to come into his line. He tried to wiggle out of it, but he finally cashed my two lottery tickets. He would not look me in the eye and was definitely in the wrong job. I like going to this location because it's close to work, but when it comes to paying,they don't have enough registers open. Lines are crazy long and just plain ridiculous! It took me 15min just to get a cup of soup and a drink. Even the 15 items or less line gets way too many people with more than 15 items because they suck at having available registers to check you out. Other than that, not really the place to buy all your groceries since it's still so pricey. I like to check out their reduced section and most of the times there are good deals otherwise I just buy what I need and buy the rest somewhere else. read more

I'm only writing this review because I saw an older gentleman at the bakery today picking stuff off the jalapeno cheese bagels, eating it, then licking his fingers and proceeding to keep picking the bagels. Since I typically get the jalapeno cheese bagels myself, this was highly disturbing to me. I think he went through all of the bagels in that container he was working on. I told one of the workers at the bakery because I guess they were too busy talking to each other to notice this was happening. All they did was scare him off, but they left all the bagels there instead of disposing of them, charging him, etc. Way to NOT handle a situation properly. So yeah, if you happen to read this review today, and eat a jalapeno cheese bagel from this Vons, then you're going to get a mouthful of some sleezy dude's saliva. Makes me wonder how often this guy comes here. For what it's worth, I've been coming here since last July and this is the first time I've seen this clown. Other than that, this Vons is OK. The products are fine in my experience. Only a handful of the employees are decent. We pulled over to grab a few items real quick. The store was clean and organized. We went to line 1, open. no wait EXCEPT for the cashier. Monica was taking a personal call and continued her conversation for nearly 2 minutes. She saw us, turned away, lowered her voice and continued to talk on the phone. When she finally ended the call (I mean we obviously were interrupting her at her job trying to purchase groceries while she was in the cashier position) she did NOT apologize or say hello or anything, she just rang up one item and not our full order. I had to ask her to ring up everything and then she provided zero customer service. She did not say anything but hand us the receipt. Some customer service would be nice. Very frustrated with my experience today. I waited 24 minutes in the express lane. There did not seem to be any sense of urgency or want to get customers in and out of there. I get that it's Memorial Day weekend but it was not the amount of customers that were there, it was the speed of the employees. My biggest pet peeve is when employees are talking to each other, and the cashier today was doing just that and was very inappropriate in front of customers. While customers were putting in their card info he was reading a People magazine and yelled "ANNA FARIS!!!!" to another employee. And when the girl in front of me was done with her transaction he made a look of disgust or something about her after she left. I was afraid to say anything based on his actions and what he would say about me after I left. Quite honestly, they have no business selling produce. More often than I care to count, we've come home with sale-priced non-organic berries only to discover 50-80% of fruit is moldy or on the verge of spoilage. If you don't want to be sickened, you're held hostage with high prices ($6 for organic in a tiny plastic package) or forced to buy frozen. I was 86 cents short and said I needed to run out to my car and would quickly bring exact change. Terrible TERRI mc-grumpy-pants had to give me the hardest dirty look and kept rolling her eyes in disgust along with shaking her old head at me. I had to walk back in for my receipt and with an exaggerated effed up attititude said she wouldn't give it to me cuz she thru it in the trash. I understand all people are entitled to have a bad day but after reading some reviews for this particular store it's clear it needs a new staff. Horrible experience right now (July 3rd 2020, 8:20PM) at the deli. I guess they were closed, but all the food was up and the lady was cleaning behind the counter somewhere. She was very grumpy and feisty. I get it, it's forth of July weekend, and retail can be stressful... but she was so rude, I have never been treated like this at a grocery store!!! We only wanted to get some Mac and cheese..the bowl was half full, all lights on! And she refused service in the rudest tone saying they were closed when it was only 8:20PM and went back to work... Does all of this food get thrown out at the end of the night? That's so wasteful, especially when there's people willing to buy the food right in front of you. The old lady working in the deli was such a nightmare and should get a performance observance because we were very respectful when we asked to buy merchandise from the counter. All she snapped was "we're closed!!". Twice! As if she's my cranky ass grandma. What kind of people read supermarket reviews? Further more, what kind of people review a supermarket in the first place? Negativies: -It can be busy and the traffic on Bristol can suck if your girlfriend insists that you go during shitty rush hour. -Prices are a bit high, especially compared to Ralph's down Macarthur towards Fountain Valley. -Manischewitz practically has their own isle, yet Vons can't be arsed to offer "authentic" Tahini? That same Ralph's that I prefer has at least one if not two varieties of proper middle eastern Tahini. It's cheap too! -I live in south orange county for a reason. Seeing the bums panhandling in the parking lot is incredibly humbling and depressing. Can't the 99% conduct their business elsewhere? On the positive, I have found the quality of their meat to be higher than any other major supermarket chain. This is both for ground meat, as well as their deli offerings. On another negative note (which dropped them to 2 stars): their fruit has been utterly disappointing. Even seasonal fruit tastes like garbage. I recently bought some nectarines that look like they had been picked and handled by Muhammad Ali--bruised, scarred.. and starchy and disgusting! How hard is it to sell seasonal fruit that actually takes decent? Moral of the story: go to Ralph's on Macarthur (or Trader's across Bristol from Vons) save some $$$, get better fruit, and feel slightly less guilty about your white privilege. read more

I have come to this Vons a thousand times to grab groceries when I used to live in the area but recently moved. Yesterday, I was in Santa Ana, stopped here and had such a great experience, that I felt the need to leave a review. Deli- the lady who helped me doublechecked which brand and how much to make sure I got what I asked for. She offered a sample to make sure it was cut how I wanted it which was awesome. Seafood dept.- I was attended by Ralph, who was the friendliest employee of this store that I've ever met before. We struck up conversation about work and he smiled and had the kind of energy that just makes you happy to be around. Aside from that he was very helpful in making sure I got the perfect amount. I wanted to take the Vons survey to rave about his exceptional service but lost my receipt so I couldn't do it so I thought this was the next best thing. I don't like the way they've been handling COVID and taking necessary safety precautions. I moved to Costa Mesa in August and this is my neighborhood grocery store so I visit it frequently. There have been too many occasions to count when I will see an employee walking around the store (I assume on a break) with out their mask on properly or not on at all. Management really needs to crack down on proper mask etiquette, especially since Grocery store employees are essential workers dealing with the general public on a daily basis. read more

Was shopping at This Vons On a regular Basis until I started being harassed by One worker who would purposely do things to offend or insult me. She for a whole year would roll her eyes at me walk away when bagging when It came to my turn lettering me know she does not like me enough to not want to pack my groceries but she purposely followed me to the register I was at once she realized i avoided her line she followed me and then still when it came to my turn she walked away smirking and rolling her eyes looking me up a down. At this point I was like really really annoyed. I was really uncomfortable and felt like she was purposely harassing me. Then the final straw for me was when you purposely went 4 cashiers down to were I was to come behind me in the line I was in to rudely shout well chuckling at the cashier well looking at me repeatedly asking and telling the cashier for a "Blue Bill in the house , is there a blue bill in the house?" the cashier had no idea what she was referring too he had a lost annoyed face and tone he was getting frustrated because she made no sense to anyone of us standing there she finally walked away with a evil smirk on her face...but she hooverard me standing next to me insulting me laughing because ...what I was found is she was calling me a Nazi! look it up its a in the Urban Dictionary. So it bothered me so much I called the manager a few days later I think it was...the manager acted like he cared but did nothing cause all the guys including the manager all look like they have crushes on her so they all with lie for her. I finally stop shopping at Vons and I will never ever view them the same after they did nothing to remove this racist employee. Ohhhh....I almost forgot...this... So scratches started appearing on mt girlfriends car so my gf started going in the market without me because the employee made me feel of uncomfortable so the first time this happened the employee always see me and my gf always shopped together we were never without one another so the one day she went in by herself the employee assume I was with her in the store but indeed I was not and I was in the car with tinted windows up...she came out the grocery store doors I noticed she was looking around for our car because their were no carts to be collected around our car...so I ducked I hit so she could not see me she walked out of her way in between cars to to the side of our car looked around like she was going to do something and then she saw my face from the front windshield and her face turned so pale and then red she was shocked I caught her she immediately turned around a walked away trying to be calm...she disappeared from the store for about 3 months and then she was back ....I immediately made the call after that day and demanded it be looked in to and she be fired but 3 months and she was back . I stopped shopping at VONS there were they are racist and protect racists. I swear to god on everything I love I'm telling the truth and even leaving some more incidences out . This Vons gets an extra star for being in a good location, but loses many for crappy service and a dangerous parking lot. The Starbucks inside this Vons is horrible. I waited 5+ minutes just to stand in line to place my order. I didn't end up getting anything, though because the lady behind the counter said "be right back" and walked away. She didn't come back. :( The produce is a definite hit or miss. I left a note for the produce men on top of a bunch of moldy lemons, hopefully they got it and have improved their quality. ;) I think the only reason I come here is because of the GIANT $7 sandwich that my boyfriend loves. I usually don't shop here but last night I had to go around 8:30pm for some balloons for my 10 yr old bday today. We sure got help when requested but the only we saw were the two cashiers up front. Balloons are very expensive for what they are worth. They are on the ground already and smaller than the way they were last night. My baby requested a cheesecake instead of a cake. Ever notice how you just go somewhere over and over and over and just take it for granted that whatever you like will always be there, and you never really appreciate it? This Vons store is exactly what I am talking about. It's like the road you drive on or the water that comes out of the tap. It's just always there and you don't notice how good it usually is. Or how bad life would suck without it! In any case, the people that work here are mostly excellent. The manager is kind, helpful, and entertaining. And so are the checkers, produce, and flower department staff. They do need more staff because the lines get long. And they could put less displays right inside the door so you don't crash into them on your way in. But still worth 5 stars. read more

I really enjoy shopping at this Vons but I have to admit they have the worst customer service! Their customer service desk is open very limited hours and they even close it down for a lunch break. I went in the other day at 2 PM and they told me I would have to come back at 3, this was after waiting 10 minutes in front of the desk before someone told me they could not help me. Also, if you go in their late a night, be prepared to stand in line a while, apparently the 3's a crowd rule only applies at certain times of the day, I went in there around 9:30 and there where 5 people in front of me. With that all being said, most of the time I really enjoy shopping there. They have a great bakery and a great selection of products. They are a little more expensive then other stores, but if you know how to shop with their sales, then you'll do just fine, I often times leave with 40-50% of price just down because of their sales. read more

CHECK YOUR RECIEPTS!! Vons Southern California was sued by the state attorneys office in 2004 and again in 2008 for routinely overcharging and double charging their shoppers. Their parent company Safeway was even worse and was ordered by the courts to post signs at every register warning shoppers and informing them they were entitled to twice the amount of overcharge is groceries, sans alcohol and tobacco. They attempted to steal from me on 4 out of 5 trips, over charging me 21 dollars for chicken breast on one occasion, and double charging for a 30 pack of Coors Light on another.
