This is a new place that is off to a good start. First off, the ambience and vibe. Very good. They have music, but not very loud so you get the murmur of the diners. Which I prefer. Finally a good restaurant in the village! Big space. They have 3 kitchens so food comes out fast. Family style dining. Service was super good. Our waitress was constantly checking in and really friendly. Caesar salad 8/10 - it comes with a parmesan churro BOMB. It also had a black roasted garlic that was realllllly good. Kinda on the unique side but still classic Caesar. Pep pizza 9/10 - BOMB. Burrata Caprese Bruchetta 6/10 - excellent burrata but was kinda plain. The Spaghetti-o's dish 11/10 - omfg I loved this. Get this for sure. Shrimp spaghetti 6/10 - shrimp were good. Wasn't a fan of the sauce. Parmesan pork chop 9/10 - BOMBBBB. The sauce, the cheese, the arugula on top....bomb. Super good. Def can share with 3-4 people. Wine list was on the unique side but good selection. (I am super basic when it comes to wine.) They have a $20 corking fee. I don't get some of the hate for this place. We visited in shoulder season and were excited to try this as we've followed the brothers on their Top Chef journey. It was quiet in Mammoth Lakes given the time of year, but the restaurant was bustling since many of the places where closed. We had reservations for a Friday night with plans to do a big hike the next day; we liked it so much we ended up going Saturday as well. The cocktails were on point (whiskey sour is outstanding) and the wine list had some interesting finds. I wasn't too excited about the menu when I first saw it, but I was so surprised when I had the food. Even the most basic items were interesting. Between the two nights, we had the anchovies toast, prosciutto, Caesar salad (the croutons were like little gougeres), funghi pizza, Voltaggi-O's, chicken parm, hanger steak and spaghetti with shrimp. The Voltaggi-O's and chicken parm were the stand outs. We also had the deconstructed tiramisu, which was good, but kind of a far cry from tiramisu. The servers were friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is super laid back with 80s music playing at a nice volume. All in all, we would absolutely come back. read more

We tried to get into this restaurant several times since it opened and were turned away during busy winter weekends; even just for drinks, which turned us off. We chalked it up to growing pains from just opening. We were able to get a reservation during a summer girls trip, so we gave it a whirl. The decor was chic and fun 80s music played as we walked in. There was a bottleneck at the host stand when we arrived and it took them 15 minutes to figure it out because of busser issues, but it wasn't a huge deal. We were seated at a nice table near the bar and Isabela was our server; she was attentive, intelligent and friendly. Our drinks ($18 Palomas) were served fast and our food came in rapid order. We started with the brussel sprouts, which was served with about 5 grilled and halved Brussels served with shaved Brussels over top in a sweet dressing. We then had the Caprese Bruschetta with pesto sauce; the burrata cheese was delicious, the pesto was a bit salty (and I normally like salt), but the bread was incredible. We ended our appetizers with the Italian Spicy Tuna served with fried prawn crackers. We liked the brussel sprouts and caprese enough, but the Spicy Tuna was a bit off. Some in our group liked it and some didn't. For me, the prawn crackers were fun, but the tuna was ground up and looked like dog food (sorry). The dish was creative and served with little balls of lemon that tasted a bit like meringue; the tuna tasted okay on the cracker, which is more like a fried wonton or pork rind consistency. Overall, I think the grinding of the tuna had a lot to do with the dish not hitting well. The incredible dish we heard about that did not disappoint was the Lamb Raviolis. This dish was composed of 5 large raviolis served with tender lamb in a savory tomato sauce over top; the ravioli was filled with ricotta cheese and the dish was rich and delicious. One or two raviolis will be enough to fill someone up when served in addition to other appetizers and salads. We enjoyed our time at Vulcania and will likely return, but it didn't blow our minds. Truly delicious and delightful. Recommend highly! Isabella took amazing care of us. We ordered six family style dishes for four, along with dessert (delicious cheesecake with balsamic strawberry reduction) and we were just blown away by the flavors. I was a little unsure if we should try due to some of the other reviews, but so glad we went. The restaurant is meant to be old school Italian sharing but with modern twists and we loved it. We ordered the Cesar salad, caprese bruschetta, cheese pizza, calamari, rigatoni and the turkey tetrazzini - everything was delicious and loved their take on the calamari- the ingredients sound bizarre but totally worked. Also not sure if he's here regularly but cool to walk in and see Brian Voltaggio i believe actually working the kitchen, it feels like a lot of these celebrities throw their name on a restaurant and call it a day. If they plan on being here regularly, that might help this place a success in running smoothly. We will definitely be back next time we're in town. read more

What a disappointment! We have dinned many times at Vulcania in the past year & the quality has definitely changed. Voltaggi-O's & meatball were served cold, Chicken Parmesan was equivalent to the sole of my shoe that the knife could barely cut it. Overall timing of the dinner was horrible. Awkward silence ensued as I thought about how many different ways she could've delivered that message without being snooty and pompous. The menu is "composed"? Really? We saw this restaurant crowed a few days prior dinning here and we wanted to see what the deal was, So we decided to give it a try. We were here on March 10 around evening for 4 people. Our appetizers, came in and I had a deep pit feeling that is foreshowing , Our calamari was undercooked, almost raw and wasn't fried long enough. Our drink of Vodka cranberry and the vodka that was used was cheap alcohol from a plastic bottle. The Shrimp scampi is my favorite dish and the shrimp scampi was made with no effort at all, the flavor was bland and tasteless. Service was not great. Our family of 3 was seated at a table by the bar even though we had made reservations well in advance. The servers were the bartenders taken care of the bar patrons mostly ignoring us and was difficult to get our order in. Difficult to get anyone's attention to help with service as they would just pass on that our servers were at the bar. The funny thing is that the table right next to us at the bar had far better service than us as one of the bartenders seem to take a liking to that table. Food was otherwise ok but not remarkable. Great food, poor service. We came in on a slow Sunday night for dinner recently. Most tables were empty. Our party of 2 got seated right next to the kitchen, with a loud fridge/machine right next to us. That was weird, given how many other tables were available. Our main server (Kendall?) was super inattentive and frankly, kinda rude. She literally threw the menus on the table and walked away. I was also given a weird, tiny cup to drink my red wine. I could see another lady a few tables away drinking from a normal stem glass, so I asked if I could get one of those. And was promptly told "no, this is the glass we offer for wine". I pointed to the other lady drinking from a normal glass, at which point the server got me a spritz glass. TBH I don't care about what specific glass I drink from- but I do care about being treated differently. This place is a huge improvement compared to the previous Italian place. I really like the furniture choice and how they fixed up the location. When you decide to have starters definitely try the whipped mortadella bruschetta. Then I know most Americans like their pasta with cheese but there is something as too much! As a matter of fact their lamb sauce should actually just be served on tagliatelle instead of ravioli. Then top it off with some shaved pecorino and mint The lamb sauce is really to die for but the taste totally gets lost in the overload of cheese. The cheese ravioli was so heavily filled with cheese that the cheese filling was kinda lukewarm when served. We also tried their mushroom pizza and this one was pretty decent. The food was fabulous although one entree was never actually delivered...hence the review. The management has decided to shift away from reservations and do only walk ins. Yesterday was night two of this ghastly decision. The waiters were overwhelmed and chaotic. The restaurant was at full capacity within 15 minutes of opening. Again the food that actually arrived and the drinks were great. The service was terrible and I feel that this is more due to poor managerial decision making them due to the waitstaff. We are here a few months ago and I was keen keen on going back since we had good service and good food, but sadly service at least has gone downhill. Way too much attitude for a place like Mammoth. We had a reservation and waited awhile to be seated even though the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. Once seated waited at least 20 minutes with no one coming to the table to greet us or take a drink order. Left since we had two little kids and a dog in tow. Hostess could not have cared less. If you want to be the "fancy place" in Mammoth, do better. The shine of having top chef branding will wear off. read more
