I say this as huge fan of the Voltaggios...if you like tomato sauce, this is your place. The lunch menu was such a yawn, we chose to have apps: beef carpaccio, cheese sti...er, smoked mozzarella frito, and ham and pineapple (the menu's lonely example of their humor) but the Caprese showed up. I can sum up the three dishes we had as "tomato sauce three ways." It's a really well-balanced sauce, but come on guys, where's the Ink spirit that brought us burnt wood ice cream and creamed corn ravioli? Gosh I wanted to love this place! I'll start with being positive, service was great and I could see it being a good spot for a night cap at the bar and dessert. But if you're going for the igloos just be prepared to be disappointed by the food. It's super over hyped and the hype made me trust their quality. Both seafood dishes were super fishy and not fresh (to be fair it's a mountain town so I should have known better, but the hype made me trust them). Normally I wouldn't both to leave a review for just a mid experience (not to terrible but not great) but given the price point and insane wait times it's worth noting as there's so many other great options around. We've been dining at Vulcania for years during Ski School week -- always booking well in advance, treating the staff kindly, and tipping generously. Unfortunately, the service has never matched the setting, and this last visit was the final straw. While the restaurant benefits from a prime location and limited dining options in the area, the hospitality has consistently fallen short. It often feels as though the lack of competition allows service standards to slip. In all my years working in hospitality after studying hotel and restaurant management, I've rarely encountered a team so unwilling to accommodate reasonable requests. Simple asks -- like placing tables next to each other or borrowing an extra chair -- are met with an immediate "no," not because they can't, but because they won't. The atmosphere feels rigid and rule-bound rather than welcoming and guest-focused. Thinking back, I honestly can't recall a time a staff member greeted our table with genuine warmth or even a smile. This most recent visit was especially disappointing due to the level of unprofessionalism -- particularly from management -- and it ultimately convinced us that we won't be returning or recommending the restaurant. Dining out should be fun, relaxing, and memorable. Vulcania is none of that. read more

This was our favorite restaurant in Mammoth until tonight. We have been to Vulcania two or three times and we usually go when we first get into town because it was a special place. This time not so much. We started with the scampi appetizer which was $26 for 5 relatively small shrimp. My wife tried hers first and when I asked her how it was she said have you tried it? I took a bite and the shrimp was total mush. I spit it out and we told our server. She took it back to the kitchen and came back and said the chefs said it was definitely bad shrimp and that it wouldn't be on our bill. No kidding! They should have offered us a complimentary appetizer for serving us bad shrimp. The rest of the service was OK although once she realized our meal was going south she kind of checked out on us. And when the bill came, the scampi was still on it! Our server, Dakota, had to get a manager's approval to take it off our bill. Went to dinner on memorial weekend and they were extremely busy. We added our name and sat down, and our server, I don't remember his name but maybe mid 40's gentlemen made it a great experience. We had some issues with the food coming out in a timely manner and he went above and beyond to get us set up with food and drinks while we waited. Five star service in light of some difficulties, and that's what you want to see when it comes to service. I don't know if it was supposed to be a serving spoon, but I for sure ate it all with the provided metal spork because it felt on theme. This is my Go To spot when in Mammoth. We have been coming here for Four years. I love the pepperoni pizza. It's hands down my top favorite in Cali. Our waitress tonight was Jasmine. Phenomenal service! She recommended a mint in my Hugo Spirts. Wow. It was delicious. I loved that is snowed while we were eating and it made the ambiance that much more romantic. Listen, the food is great. Service is good. But the serious problem is the only seating for more than six people is an up-charge for a downgraded experience. We paid the $150 for one of the "pods" because we were told it was the only way to seat 8. DO NOT DO THIS IN WINTER. It was beyond freezing, despite the heater. The table wouldn't stop moving every time someone shifted in their seat or bumped it. (Hard not to do when kids are sitting there.) It felt like a punishment to be seated out there. Adding insult to injury, when I went into the main restaurant to use the restroom, I passed an empty table that would have easily seated us all. So so frustrating. Wish I wanted to come back. During a girls trip to Mammoth, my friends and I had a reservation for dinner at Vulcania. Reservations were made for the outdoor igloos. I was excited to eat here since I'm a fan of the Voltaggio brothers and have never dined in an igloo. We were seated right away and our hostess was kind enough to take our picture once seated. The igloo experience was cool and we were pleased to see there were blankets and a heating system in the igloo creating a cozy ambiance. The menu had a decent selection and something for all the dietary needs of our group. I ordered the caprese which was made with burrata, tomatoes, pesto and aged balsamic. It was served with 4 slices of toasted bread. The addition of pesto in the caprese was a nice touch. I also ordered the funghi pizza made with taleggio, mushrooms of the day,fontina, and mushroom hay. I really enjoy mushroom pizza and was pleased with the flavor. However, we did have to remind the waiter about our order. It appeared to have been forgotten and arrived 15 mins after everyone else's meal. The cheese and mushrooms were all located at the center of the pizza leaving too much dough without enough toppings. I would have liked more toppings on each bite. Overall service could have been a little quicker but the food was delicious. read more

However, we walked by during our res time later to see they were serving. They said it was a "soft opening". Really wish they would have offered that to people with reservations first! We really wanted to try it, as they were doing their soft opening we sat at the outside fire pit by the village and they rudely asked us to leave(even though nobody else was using it). My husband and I were looking for a dinner spot on a Thursday night and we didn't make any reservations so we decided to try Vulcania because we wanted Italian. Wesley in and were able to sit at the bar immediately. The beef carpaccio is good if you like tomato sauce. I'm not the biggest tomato sauce girly so it would have been better without it for me. We got an Orchiette pasta. That one was so worth it and my favorite. Black seashell noodles immersed with crab and a light white sauce with an echo of spice. It wasn't uncomfortable spicy it was delish! We got a pepperoni pizza which was SO soft and juicy and CHEESY. Highly recommend getting the pizza. It even tastes good the second day. They use little cup pepperonis like Prince st pizza. Finally we got the risotto which took a while to get to us but was very good when it came. The shrimp was juicy and large but we def over ordered for two. If I had to choose I would choose the Orchiette over the risotto. Pizza is a must and carpaccio is ok! Walking in the vibe is 5/5 it is beautiful inside and there are so many special touches. We loved the onyx with the backlight on the bar it was stunning. We are HUGE voltaggio fans and we're so excited to try this place out. Buratta was incredible the pesto and the tomatoes were truly some of the best I have ever had and I was in Italy last year. The ravioli was a bit disappointing because there was too much cheese but it was still good. The gelato swirl was so incredible and I loved the puffy of the donuts that came with it. Overall the prices were great food was good and I would go back but try a different entree. Our server was wonderful and the food came out fast and it was hot. We were impressed.
