Came in on a whim because who doesn't love a small town diner on a Sunday morning? S/O to the coffee guys who were on it with coming to the table with refills. Lots of options and great staff.

Great service--fast and friendly! This place is a true old-school mountain diner, like stepping into a time warp from the 1970s (in the best way). The decor is retro and charming, and the food is exactly what you'd hope for: hearty, homestyle diner classics done right. If you're looking for a laid-back, nostalgic spot with good food and no frills, this is it.

This is a hometown diner, a good place for breakfast. We were seated right away and servers came to our table quickly. I ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast. The eggs, hash browns, and toast were cooked perfectly. The steak was ok, but I've had better elsewhere. There was too much breading for my liking. I got gravy on the side and that was very flavorful. My husband got the pork chop breakfast and enjoyed it. Everyone was friendly and service was attentive.

Fair warning, most of these businesses during the summer are going to be run by the local teenagers. I appreciate them working hard, but there is definitely room for improvement. I feel like there needs to be an adult supervising these students or someone who can guide them in running the restaurant more efficiently. We walked in and ended up being 3rd on the list (awesome!) and they stated it would only be about a 10min wait. Great. We went outside as the entryway is extremely small and can get crowded quickly. We started seeing other groups being seated that arrived after us. Sometimes they'll seat larger groups first, so I didn't think anything of it. Then the host came out with the pad of names and she was on the second page. That's when I knew something was off. I went to talk with her and she went back to the first page and EVERY name was crossed off,but mine. She apologized and we were seated next. We sat down and we were asked 3x by 3 different people whether or not we want something other than water. We continued to see this pattern for EVERY table. VERY inefficient and a waste of time when you have a line out the door. We were in a rush to get back to Denver so we only wanted our meal and to get out of there. I had a slice of french toast and hashbrowns ($3+$5) and my husband ordered the western omelette ($14). No extra drinks, no substitutions. The french toast was exactly what I needed and the hashbrown hit the spot. The omelette was what we expected. The check comes and it's hand written with our order with no prices, but a simple total of $27.05. Umm... 5+3+14 =22. Tax was about 9%, so at most it should be about $24-25. Not sure what they're charging us extra for. My husband just wanted to get out of this establishment, so I did not confront them about the random charge. On top of that, they do charge you the credit card fee (4%). I don't mind fees, but please DISCLOSE what I am paying for. In the end, our tab was $28.13 excluding tip. I personally was not pleased with all these hidden fees. There are a few other diners in town and I will be going to those restaurants over this one in the future.

I love the hometown decor of this place, very old fashioned and inviting. The service was top notch and our waitress was so friendly. We ordered the breakfast burrito and the omelette. Both were so tasty. Prices were pretty reasonable. My friend lives in Gunnison and said this is her favorite breakfast place so that factored in my review.

The food was insanely good! We had about a 20 minute wait at this sidewalk cafe. But we'll worth the wait. The entire team was so engaging and nice. The food comes out extremely hot and fast. I had the breakfast burrito stuffed with egg, sausage, cheese and home fries, then Smothered with Chili Verde. The server suggested I get a side of country gravy to pour on top of the Chile verde. What an explosion of flavors. We also had a couple of omelets and a fresh from scratch biscuit the size of your hand. Come hungry because the portions are massive. So fun and busy. They probably had 20 tables within the dining room and everyone was chattering and the expedite is speaking loud enough so the whole place can here. Great fun, great food and great value!

I love it here. When I was at Western and my family came to visit I always took them here. The food is great and I swear it is hard to find a breakfast like this any other place. They have great breakfast food and it just so yummy! I wish they can expand it so they have more seating. read more

Pancho is not truthful. I just asked the cook and they do NOT get everything from Sisco pre-made. They order ingredients, yes, but all is made from scratch. For Gunni, the W rocks! I'm a 10 year local. read more

Last week fiance and I left our home in Denver to visit south western Colorado. Majority of our trip consisted of eating out from Canon city, Durango/Silverton and Telluride. On our drive back home to Denver,we drove through Gunnison. As we pulled up to the signal on the highway, my best half looked and said let's have breakfast there on the left. Even though we were over a 100 miles from home! This place hit the spot , out of every breakfast we had in Colorado. The homemade biscuits and fresh breakfast made it feel like home. Priced right with priceless service and staff. read more

The fact that there is a steady line of folks waiting for a table in the W is a sure sign that these folks are doing things right. Menu offers a nice selection of breakfast items. I tried the Huevos with pork green chili. My wife had one of their omelettes. Her order came with an amazing scratch biscuit. It was so large we shared it. Outstanding. We will be back on next year's trip to Gunnison. read more

A breakfast at the W Cafe is de rigeur in Gunnison, so go already. There will likely be a line out the door, or people waiting on benches outside but do not let that deter you. This is straight ahead, honest, no B.S. breakfast food. I would have breakfast there every day if I could. read more

I'm a fan! We really enjoyed our breakfast. The corned beef hash was fresh and delicious; my poached egg was cooked exactly the way I wanted it and that rarely happens in upscale places. I really enjoyed the atmosphere - waitresses knowing their local customers and yet taking an interest in out-of-towners as well. Okay, the booths are pretty worn but that's really the only negative I could give this place. It's only open until 2pm, so keep that in mind if you plan to try them out. I definitely recommend! read more

The small town diner atmosphere is appealing first, but you quickly realize how chaotic and unfocused the environment really is. In general, it was clean and tidy, as much as you could expect in a small, local, restaurant. I ordered the grilled tuna melt, which was decent, with mediocre onion rings. It wasn't bad, just not exceptional. One of the main things I noticed was the lack of attention to detail. One of the people I was dining with ordered a French dip sandwich - which came with horseradish. When she found there was no horseradish on her sandwich she asked the waitress for some. She told her that they didn't serve horseradish, which perplexed me, since horseradish is one of the main ingredients of French dip. In general, it was a pleasant experience, just not enough so that I would go back again. read more

Loved this great find! While it was really busy, they managed to find a table for us immediately and make us feel right at home. Our server Jason was fantastic and very attentive and the food was delicious. Great chicken fried steak and the fruit platter was something to write home about. We ll definitely be back!! read more

We were referred here by the owner of the hotel at which we stayed. It is a locals joint, and we loved it. Our party had breakfast burritos that could have fed all three of us. The biscuits were yummy and I'm not a biscuit fan. The service was fast and efficient. We'll definitely go there again the next time we're in Gunnison. read more

We had breakfast, they cook the whole menu all day. My son had French toast, tasty but nothing outstanding. I had the W skillet, great portions and tasty. My wife had the hash browns with cheese, onions and diced ham. It had good flavor and large portions. The service was exceptional, the waitress was super nice and went out of her way to be accommodating. She filled my wife's canteen and when my wife was going to get some vegetarian chili to go, she suggested to try it before buying it. She said it had a lot of spice and boy she was correct. Overall nice place to stop, tasty food and very friendly. Good value read more

I've been to The W 3 or 4 times and it's hit or miss. I think it depends on the cook. Sometimes it's 5 star. Sometimes it's 1 star. I still keep going back whenever I'm in the area. And regardless of what the rest of the reviews say their biscuits are fluffy and awesome. And yes the butter is really hard sometimes. You have to try The W anyway. And the entire wait staff is great. read more

Made a pit stop in here to fill our bellies and were not disappointed. My husband had breakfast and I went with a burger. Both were fresh and amazing, no pre made patties here. Definitely dish out the extra two bucks for the fresh fruit side, you will not be disappointed. Would love to come back if passing through again. read more

In Gunnison for the weekend and decided to check this place out for breakfast. It took a long time for our waitress to realize she had a new table but once she realized it she was apologetic (and was friendly). The food was ok, nothing special. I got a biscuit with my order and it was slightly burnt on one side but you could taste it through out. read more

'Where the locals meet to eat'. Home cooking as the best. Blueberry pancakes with the berry mixed into the batter. They were the same size as the platter they were served on. Service was great & fast. Prices were good. We will be back. read more

A Gunnison staple! I lived in Gunni back in the late '90's and the place hasn't changed at all. The food is always hot and served quickly if not the most imaginative at least it's expeditious. It's probably a four star joint based on the fact it has survived in a notoriously tough/seasonal market as long as it has but the surly mountain momma servers could use a bit of refinement in order to garner that next star! read more

I had the Philly burger and it was one of the better burgers I've had recently. They were slammed, so there was a tiny bit of lag for some service...otherwise a 5 star. You can tell it's a favorite local spot since there was a wait on a Sunday morning. About the only bad thing i can say was that i was sat by the front door that needs adjusting and constantly slammed. The register was also right there, so some stranger's butt was always in my ear...but that was just luck of the draw. read more

Scratching my head at some of the negative comments here. Folks, this is classic roadfood. It's a diner in a small populace. It's high-carb and high-volume, which is why this place was full when I arrived at 8am on Sunday. Were this place in Tucson, there would be a line out the door for a half block (that happens at Bobo's in Tucson and I thought W Cafe was better than Bobo's). I had the chicken fried steak and gravy, with 2 eggs over easy and hash browns. It filled a large oval plate; I couldn't finish the hash browns, and what I did eat kept me full for the remainder of the day. I didn't want to risk the coffee, which at diners tends to be over-cooked, so I can't comment on that. Bottom line. There are times when one wants to watch calories and eat a balanced diet. But for those other times... The W Cafe will fill you up with comfort breakfast food, and then some. read more

Never change this place. Nobody needs another fast paced, unfriendly cookie cutter chain restaurant. The servers are friendly, inviting and attentive. Food portions were generous and delicious. Has a laid back old school feel and needs to stay that way. Locals deserve a place like this and tourists should be courteous and tip generously! read more

They have a nice sized patio area with about 7 spaced out tables and a couple of chairs for the to go orders. There is a huge pine tree for shade as well. Simple menu written on a chalk board because it varies daily. The prices seem appropriate for a quality food truck and for the area as well. I was already debating the Philly or the shrimp poboy depending on what they had and it turned out to be the poboy. Order didn't take long and then my huge sandwich arrived. It came with a small bag of chips, but the sandwich itself is huge and loaded. The sandwich is on a soft hogie rather than the traditional french type of bread, but it's delicious and fresh . The shrimp (plump, perfectly cooked and plenty) is in a kind of dark cajun remoulade mixed with bacon and sauteed onions with multi colored bell peppers. Oh, and it has lettuce so you don't feel bad about eating it all in one sitting! :) Overall, I loved it! Bursting with flavor in every bite! Felt more like a Cajun shrimp Philly minus the cheese. I ended up going with the tiny burger off of the kids menu adding mayonnaise, lettuce, onion, and the bacon marmalade. My coworker ordered the same and a shredding tots. Food came out in a respectable amount of time. It was hot and fresh. You can see right into the kitchen as it is an old food trailer that they have set up as the cooking area, which was really cool. The waitress was bringing out food for other patrons. We noticed the size of the burgers and we were glad that we got the tiny ones. first bite of the burger was absolutely fabulous. It was juicy just enough pink and the flavors with the bacon marmalade out of this world. I did try one of my coworkers shredding. They were fabulous also with just a hint of blue cheese mixed in with the potato. Definitely a must try and will be going back the next time. I am in town.

The wine list is very nice, and you won't break the bank -- especially at happy hour, with two dollars off each glass of wine between 5 and 7 PM. We had the House Malbec, from Mendoza, Argentina, and it had a delicious flavor and aroma. It was a full bodied and smooth, dark red offering. For an appetizer, we had the Shishati grilled peppers with pesto/cilantro sauce, and they were just fantastic. They are mild, nicely grilled, and beautifully presented. It is served as an appetizer, but please be warned, one out of every nine peppers is exceedingly hot. We had about 12 peppers, and all of them were mild, so we beat the odds! I've had hamburgers all over the world, and I can honestly say I have not had a better cheeseburger than I got right here from the menu at Blackstock. It's in a traditional bun, lightly toasted, with tempura, onion, cracked pepper, mayo, Tabasco, candied and smoked bacon, and it is served with Hand-cut fries. You can add guacamole for a dollar, or blue cheese or Gruyere cheese for another dollar. But I did not add a thing; it was perfect as it came out of the kitchen for me! You will be asked how you want your hamburger cooked, and I chose medium. It could not have been better! It's on the menu at a very fair $21 including your hand-cut fries. My lovely dinner-date had the petite filet mignon, a 5-ounce offering of spectacular steak, served with goat cheese, potato croquettes, asparagus, stewed shallots, served with a Cabernet Demi glaze at $45. It was a large serving, I believe bigger than 5 ounces, because we are taking half of it home in a to-go box! Again, the food was spectacular... really good. We will finish with the flourless chocolate torte, serve with whipped cream and Amarina dark cherries at $11. If I was a betting man, I'd say you're gonna love this place! We had an amazing experience dining on the rooftop! The view was incredible, and the food was even better. Our server, Liz, truly made the evening special. Not only was she professional and attentive, but she also had this wonderful ability to connect with our energetic 8-year-old. It's rare to find someone who can balance top-notch service with such genuine warmth. The menu was a lot of fun, with plenty of options whether you're in the mood for something healthy or just want to keep it simple. We stooped in on the day we left and had breakfast. I will say that all four of us had a very tasty plate. We all agreed it was a good breakfast joint. From biscuits and gravy to the skillet, it was all good! The skillet plate (Mine) was a bit small in comparison to the other plates served but was still enough.
