So everybody loves this place but I'm really not a fan, however, I still gave it five stars because I'm pretty picky. My kids love the teriyaki tacos and teriyaki steak. My wife loves a handful of things on the menu. Back when I was in high school this place catered my water polo banquet, not to mention I believe the owners are locals and I don't really have anything bad to say about this place except I don't like fish tacos. If you like fish tacos then I highly recommend this place, if you don't like fish tacos walk across street and grab a burger, let your family check this place out because everybody tells me the fish is good. read more

The fish tacos were good but definitely not the best that I've had.... would I eat them again... yes if I cannot find another local spot that makes them either better or that prepares them more "Baja style." Now the greatest disappointment was the dessert. I ordered 2 orders of churros because I LOVE them! However, I guess they confused churros with pita chips covered in cinnamon sugar because the latter is what I got. $8+ dollars wasted. I attached pictures of what I received and a picture of what legitimate churros should look like just in case you haven't had the chance to taste them in all of their wonder! Lol. No but really--- authentic churros are so delicious and they are soft on the inside with some crisp on the outside... they taste great even as a late night snack or in the morning with tea (or coffee if that's your preference)... but don't eat the churros here... oh wait- you can't actually order those here. So many different things, but everyone always has their favorite. Mine happens to be the Maui Bowl w/o beans. OMG just thinking abou tit now is making my mouth water and making me wish I lived back at home and could just go out and get one for lunch. But no, we have a major shortage of Wahoo's up here in San Francisco, so I must go without. But it's something I always eat whenever I head home to visit family and friends. I ask for a couple extra lime wedges and squeeze their citrus splendore all over my beef and rice. Tangy. Then i mix the great salasa fresca that comes along with it on the plate all together with the rice and delicious, tender, marinated beef. MMMmmmmmmmmmmmm, so much flavor. And when I'm feeling like an exceptionally large phatty I order Onion Rings. I love Wahoo's. And this location is the original one. This particular location is my favorite purely for the nostalgia of the original skate/surf/bmx and clothing company stickers and framed photos dating back to the opening of this original store in 1988. The industrial area across the street has long been home to quite a number of action sports and clothing companies so the look of wahoo's happened organically in this first one as employees of those companies would swing through for lunch and leave their stamp. The food is also a bit spicier here which I prefer. Also the 3 Brothers that own Wahoo's are really cool. Viva La Wahoo's! read more

I don't know what it was (time of day, area, my mood) but this place was dirty with a capital "DIRTY". It felt like I was eating inside the restroom. Okay, maybe not the restroom, but a distant cousin to a restroom. The food was typical Wahoo's - good, filling, and plenty on the plenty. And of course the Wahoo's hot sauce kicked brilliantly! Onion Rings = da bomb My personal favorite: The Maui Bowl with No beans. Their special Teriyaki Beef w/ rice. Insider tip: Make sure to order extra salsa and just dump that all over your rice, and then let it take a bath in their Tapitio hot sauce. You won't be sorry. If the Maui Bowl doesn't do it for you, I would suggest: -Wet Burrito (burrito smothered in cheese and red sauce) -Wahoos Sanwhich (that bread! My husband got a stomach ache after this meal and had diarrhea though we ordered safe food, grilled fish with rice.

So it's 6:50 pm on a Sunday evening and these exhausted essential workers answered their phone, happily took my to-go order, smiled when I walked in, graciously prepared my food for my nephew and his girl who just had a baby at the local hospital during a pandemic. I will continue to visit this location for the fact even after I was getting ready to leave as the last order a man walked in hungry and they proceeded to take his order with the same smile. Impressive is what it all was. Thanks Wahoo's for feeding our tribe every time a baby is born into the family and especially when one of us got engaged in Wahoo's on Bristol for refusing to go anywhere for dinner that night. My family has been going here since it opened and always had great food and service. Since Covid we ordered takeout, six entree's. When my wife asked for green sauce the counter lady said how many? My wife says six, she responds "four" and puts them in a bag. My wife says can we have more? she then throws one more in the bag and says that's it. We even tipped her 5$ on the card, or we would have taken it back. To make matters worse when we got home the sauce she threw in the bag leaked all over everything. Is this really the way to treat longtime customers? Come on Wing Lam we know your employees can do better, especially when customer service is a priority to struggling businesses. read more

I will start by saying I've been going to Wahoos since they first opened and this used to always be our favorite location as it was close to the house. The employees used to all be so nice, greet us at the door thank us when we left, all that has changed! After standing there waiting for a while A lady took our order and she was not polite and it seems she could care less if we were in there or not! We ordered three entrées and one child's meal and chips and salsa no drinks and it was $47!!! Wahoos is no longer a great healthy meal at a decent price. I can deal with that but the problem is the portions are also very small and my fish was fishy not fresh! I went to use the bathroom and there was a horrific odor it smells like their grease trap needs to be cleaned out! I also noticed there was a lot of graffiti in the bathroom they have given up painting over it or putting stickers over it to hide it! Overall I had a terrible experience , I'm giving two stars because what little food we got actually tasted good. If this is still owned by the original owner he needs to educate his managers on how to run this location. It could be a great place again but for now I will not be coming back! read more

After all the hoopla about this place...I had to go there once.....so I ordered a regular fish taco and the bonzai bowl with spicy fish. Fish taco. This was good. Fish was cooked just enough to be tender and moist. The two tortilla taco is right out of the Mexican street vendor play book. It was simple but bland..but it picked up a bit with the salsa...it was good but not great. Great....was a taco vendor on the streets of Rosarita, Mexico.....with all the herbs and spices cooked in front of you....with fresh cilantro, lettuce...tomato....and two tortillas. Those that like Wahoo tacos..need to venture into Mexico and try great tacos there. Bonzai Bowl with Spicy Fish: This was basically awful....the fish was way over cooked...it was tough and dry.....it was approaching jerky. There was a good assortment of veggies on a bed of rice. We are from (RURAL) Northern California and when we travel down south, we ALWAYS have Mexican (AUTHENTIC) wherever we go. My husband hadn't been to this place is years and we stopped for lunch on our way to the beach. We all had the blacked fish taco plates. I had brown rice & black beans and my sister-in-law had the creole beans and rice and my husband had the white rice and black beans. The portion sizes are HUGE and CHEAP! The food was AWESOME!!! I loved everything we had. The chips and salsa was yummy, too! The flavors were a mix of creole & baja mex. I would recommend this place to anyone...Be hungry when you go - you get way more then you expect!!! read more

I enjoy the surf/skate aesthetic of the place, and the food (mostly Mexican, with obvious Hawaiian and other Asian influences) is really tasty. If you're comparing it to a 5 star restaurant, you'll write a negative review as some have done. But if you compare it to other taco/burrito joints in SoCal, Wahoo's is pretty good. They don't fry their fish like most of the local spots, they grill it - and the ingredients always seem very fresh. This (their original location) is pretty unique but maybe not as nice as some of their newer locations. I don't mind, the food is good and the staff is friendly. What more do you need? read more

Came here for lunch because I was craving their chargrilled chicken bowl. I often ordered this while working near the Tustin location and was happy to find one in Newport Beach. I called in my order and it was ready to pick up in less than 10 minutes. I usually order this with extra salsa on the side. I prefer 3-4 extra salsas, but I kept it at two this time. The chicken bowl tasted a bit bland. I'm not sure if it is because it lacked all the extra salsa I am used to or if it was just missing something this one particular time. Nonetheless it was lacking and I was very disappointed. Portion was great since I had enough to eat for lunch the next day and service was wonderful, but taste just wasn't there. After a day of riding the waves nothing satisfies like a Maui Bowl with white beans. The teriyaki marinade is awesome, the white beans have a little kick to them and the ahi rice is moist and flavorful. The beer battered onion rings are really good too, crispy and not too greasy. Top it all off with some fresh Shangri-La iced tea (natural not flavored) and you're good to go. The restaurant itself is a modified house in an older part of Costa Mesa. I like to sit in the "patio room" that was added on to the side of the house while eating and drinking my $1.75 Beer of the Month (currently Corona). I give this Wahoo's, which is the original one, 5 stars because it is exactly what it is supposed to be and couldn't be any better at it. read more

The one that started it all. I've been going to this location since the mid-90s. I usually order the Big Mike combo (3 tacos) with grilled fish and all rice since I'm not big on black beans. Try their green cilantro salad dressing on the tacos if you're worried about the fish drying out from the grilling and ask for extra tomato salsa to put on top of the rice. Stopped by for lunch and ordered the 2 taco combo. The fish taco had a lot of fish but seemed dry and bland. The carne asada taco was meaty and good. Black beans and fluffy white rice rounded out the plate. Also ordered a side of chips and salsa which seemed fairly generic. OMG! They have a new salad - Kale Kai - it's awesome! I'm a covert from my classic fish tacos. You can order any protein to top. I order Wahoo (spicy). I was here on vacation. This was the original wahoo so my friends and I had to try it out. Their loaded quesadia and asada tacos quickly became my favorite. The fish tacos was ok but a bit dry for me. My friend ordered a plate with shrimps. It was super juicy. Hands down would come back when I get the chance. I've seen and eat at this establishment in multiple locations, they are not the same, some locations are better then others. I love this specific location its small and quaint. The decor reflects the small surf town a couple miles down ( the balboa peninsula is walking distance) . It has a really authentic feeling to it and the fish tacos are awesome! read more
