I am a big fan of everything I tried at Wajan. I'm not familiar with Indonesian food, so I would liken my experience to trying Thai or Philippine food for the first time - it has a recognizably Asian structure, but creates a unique experience with the combinations of spices used. My only quibble with our meal is based on my ignorance - the menu has excellent text descriptions of what is in each dish, but the names only appear in Indonesian, so I'm unlikely to be able to recognize and remember what I had the next time we visit. That said, based on my first encounter, I'm likely to enjoy anything we may order here. I was happy to find out there was an Indonesian restaurant in Portland, so I couldn't wait to go there during the week to try it but the result was not great. I was in Bali for 2 weeks a few years back, so I did taste Indonesian food before. I know some food didn't serve hot due to the weather but not sure when winter comes in Portland, will people till think eating cold chicken would be a good idea?? Food: not much taste to it. I couldn't taste any spice or even "spicy" at all. Basically they put bunch of small items around a ball of rice then charged $4 for a tiny piece of chicken extra, no one could really see the chicken on the dish. Dessert: avocado needs a lot of sweetness to make it into dessert. Just put slices of avocado, coconut meats and canned fruit was NOT dessert, specially it's not even sweet. We had to scoop out all the avocado because it was just gross and I love eating avocado. In this case, they failed to add more sugar to make it a sweet dish. Either people have no idea what Indonesian food is supposed to taste like or my group had an uncharacteristically poor meal. Dry, overcooked chicken. Dry rendang. Gado gado with odd flavors. Servers who have no idea how to pronounce what they are serving. I have worked in Indonesia for nearly 30 years and have lived there during various periods and wanted to show some of my PDX friends what the food is like on a recent visit, but I had to explain after the meal that the food we just ate was a very poor representation. Nobody working at the restaurant spoke Indonesian -- not a good sign -- although I was told the owner is Javanese. Bummed that I wasted a chance for a good meal on this. Holy cow this place is good! For context, I'm from Medan and this place had dishes from Medan. The spices reminded me of home, but the spicy ness levels were not too overwhelming for my American girlfriend. We started off with kopis and martabaks. I appreciated the green chili added as a garnish to the martabak (wasn't a garnish for me). We had nasi uduk, babi kentang, and bakmie. All of it was delicious and fragrant. I particularly enjoyed the nasi uduk with rendang as it provided a variety of textures that complimented each other quite well. We ended things off with an es cendol which was delicious. We said thanks to chef Feny and she was kind enough to give us a special treat from her childhood. I just found out about this lovely place and was sooooo excited to try it. I lived in Singapore and Malaysia and have traveled extensively in SE Asia. The region's food is high on my list of favorites and I've missed Indonesian and Malay food a LOT! It is so unique! I cannot recommend this place highly enough! The food was soooooo yummy! Made the trek to Wajan in E Burnside for dinner the other evening. Despite parking being a challenge, this Indonesian restaurant was an awesome experience. We tried the Ayam Goreng (fried chicken), which was unique and a little dry, but came with its own special sauces. The Babi Kentang (pork belly) was a little salty, but overall extremely tasty and paired well with its huge side of rice. Finally, the Nasi Uduk (medley plate) was a mix of new and unusual foods, which paired well all together but was a bit dry in my opinion. Such a good idea, as every single dish was a winner. THE FOOD: - Martabak Telor Mini: This is the first time I tried this dish, but it was delicious. Always nice to have something in a flaky casing. The seasonings for the egg mixture was yummy and made the dish! - Sate Ayam: Chicken skewers are a classic. Not a must order but a great supplement to any meal. - Babi Kentang: Pork belly is always delicious, and this was cooked to perfection. If you're looking for a meat focused dish, this will hit the spot. - Gado gado: The garlic peanut sauce is very flavorful and I love fried tempe and tofu. This is the dish I would order again! - Kari: Of the mains, I'd probably skip this one only because it wasn't my favorite curry ever. But that isn't to say it isn't delicious! The chicken was cooked really well and the potatoes soaked up the curry flavor, but I'll stick with Khao Sai (even though, yes, I know that's a different cuisine). - Telor Dadar: If you like eggs, you'll love this omelette. Finally, my wife and I went in with some friends tonight and had the most delicious, flavorful, aromatic food. The place is really quaint inside and the food is truly scrumptious. I tasted the grilled pork skewers with peanut sauce (sate Babi) like I've never had before-- a sensory delight that tasted beyond whatever is beyond delicious. My dish was a savory rich rice porridge with turmeric broth and shredded chicken a very cozy comfort food dish. There are gluten free dishes as well. So um, I think -- go!! It's good. We ordered: 1) Rendang Sapi: Incredibly tender and flavourful braised beef in a dry curry with omelette, rice, and Sambal- I could eat this every day and be happy. 2) Kari Ayam: Delicious yellow curry with rice noodles, chicken, and potatoes. The ultimate comfort food and the curry was just so full of flavour! 3) Bubur Ayam: Big fan of the fried garlic on this savory porridge- definitely some tasty comfort food. 4) Sate Ayam: better than any other chicken satay you've had- and I love the peanut sauce and pickled veggies. 5) All the Sambals (yes, we like spicy so we wanted to sample all the chili sauce varieties). As close to home as I can get. Delicious. They need to bottle all their sambal so I can have it at home any time. Nasi uduk is my favorite.
