Wajan is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland and continues to be one of my go-to places when I'm in the area. I've gone 5 times at this point and tried different dishes each time (usually the current special) and loved everything I've had. If you're a newbie to Indonesian food, you can't go wrong with the Ayam goreng (Fried bone-in chicken) either as a stand-alone rice plate OR as an add-on to mixed plates with more traditional items (I'd recommend the Nasi Uduk). But if the current special is Oxtail soup or the Soto Betawai, I'd strongly recommend those as well. read more

Food, drinks, service all gosold. They don't have any bike parking and no racks on the street which was annoying but wasn't too busy when we went so we were able to put them next to our table. If it was busier and there wasnt a table like that available then you'd be sol. Food came out quickly and was all really good. The desserts weren't too sweet. Prices are on the average to high side depending on what you order. Don't remember all the dish names of everything we ordered but definitely recommend the egg wrapped app, getting the chicken side to your main, desserts, and cocktails. read more

Food: we tried the Nasi Uduk with Ayam (fried chicken) & Babi Kentang. The Nasi Uduk offers a variety of experiences for the palate and consists of a deep fried hard boiled egg in a sweet and spicy chili sauce, pickled vegetables in turmeric peanut sauce, sweet and spicy stir fried tempe, and a large tapioca cracker. Paired with the fried chicken, this is a very filling meal. The Babi Kentang is a marinaded sweet and salty pork belly that is deliciously grilled and caramelized. It comes with potatoes, rice, and fermented chopped chili and shallots. For dessert, we tried Cenil, which is made of a soft, chewy cassava with melted palm sugar and coconut flakes on top. Nice semi-sweet dessert with a subtle flavor, good to share between 2 people. Service: attentive with good recommendations. Ambiance: we went on a sunny Friday afternoon between 2-3pm and had the restaurant to ourselves on a sunny day in Portland, so it was beautiful & peaceful! The decor is cheerfully colorful and brightens up the space in its entirety. The ambiance is very cozy here. I'm happy that Wajan has stayed open as there are not many options like it. I'm conflicted on how to rate this restaurant because this was my first time trying Indonesian food and I'm not sure if it's Indonesian food/flavors that I don't like or if it's the restaurant. Again, it could also be because I'm not familiar with these flavors. As seen through these reviews, a lot of people got nasi campur so my my friend and I got the same with a side of pork belly and potatoes. Good thing we got the pork belly and potatoes because that was the only thing we liked... The nasi campur came with fried egg and fried eggplant covered with what tastes like regular sambal sauce that you can buy at a store, so not much flavor there besides the spicy sauce--it's exactly what you'd think it'd taste like. It also came with stir fried tempeh which I didn't enjoy but my friend thought was okay (it's like of like a firmer tofu). I was excited for the curried jackfruit but it tasted just like canned jackfruit and someone poured curry sauce over it, the flavor didn't get into the jackfruit. The curry was also not strong and the jackfruit was firm but soft and a little sour. I wasn't sure what to eat the tapioca cracker with so I ate with the tempeh and that helped it taste better, but the cracker was stale. The savior of the dish was the pork belly and potatoes. I should've gotten just that alone. It's like braised pork belly and potatoes, sweet and salty. Again, I'm not sure how I should rate this place because I don't want to rate it poorly just because Indonesian food might not suit my palate but I'm also not sure if it's the restaurant that didn't do it justice. read more

Food (4/5): Being Indonesian, it's always great to see authentic restaurants with a nice selection of Indonesian dishes. The food here is very beautifully presented and looks amazing. The main issue is that a lot of flavors seem dulled or overly salty. For example, the fried chicken was a bit dry and lacking flavor and the rendang was tough and was lacking sauce. The bakmi however was really great. The sate babi had great meat but the peanut sauce was too salty. Service (5/5): Amazing and friendly service with the servers frequently checking up on us. They also brought out the food quickly and efficiently. Venue (5/5): Really well decorated venue with Indonesian themes, art, and vibe. This was my first Indonesian food experience and I must say, I was a little overwhelmed by all the spices..in a good way though. I wasn't really sure what to expect when I sat down since I didn't know anything on the menu. We got there at a good time because about 30 minutes later, the whole place filled up. It's a cute little restaurant and I appreciate all the details in the decor. I ordered a nasi campur because it looked like a popular dish on Yelp and added ayam goreng. There were a total of 8 different items on my plate (which was not really a plate). Every item had its own unique spices and flavor so none of them tasted the same. I really liked the sauce on the eggplant. If I never saw the menu and did a taste test, I would have never guessed the curried jackfruit or stir fried Tempe in a million years. The Tempe tasted like taro to me and the texture of the jackfruit was similar to cooked artichoke heart. Sate Babi was delicious as well and the meat was very tender. The cassava cake was okay, nothing special about it. This was quite a heavy meal so I wish I would have ordered some pickled veggies on the side or something. My dish was a little on the greasy side since most items were either stir fried or deep fried. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the tapioca cake. It tasted stale and had a greasy aftertaste. I will be coming back to try other items on the menu for sure. I think we picked the right spot to try Indonesian food for the first time. read more

This spot is super cute and the staff was friendly. The inside was small but there is plenty of outdoor seating for when warm days return. I got the ayam goreng and the chicken was cooked perfectly. It fell right off the bone. Super easy to eat. The crunchy topping was so good and the meat was flavored well. The sauces were okay but not my favorite. I will say that the iced coffee was definitely not worth it. I would skip it in the future. The menu was adventurous so I hope to go back and try more. I finally found an Indonesian restaurant and got excited. Having lived in the Netherlands, there was a lot of Indonesian food and I have always loved it. So I ordered through Uber Eats. I ordered the Babi Kentang, Gado Gado, and Tempe Orek. The flavors were all amazing. The Gado Gado was soggy and already had the peanut sauce on it. The veggies were not as crunchy and the carrots were too crunchy so I may order the peanut sauce on the side next time. The Babi kentang was absolutely amazing. I didn't like the Tempe though. It was cooked too long and too hard to eat. I like the pieces a bit bigger and that there's still some softness to it. I would still try this place again, just different things. read more

We visited this place based off a friend's recommendation! We got the Nasi Campur with a side of fried chicken and pork belly and their special soup of the day. Not much parking at the restaurant but plenty of parking on the street! The best thing was the fried chicken and the pork belly, great amounts of flavor and paired with the rice complements very well together. All the other condiments like fried eggs and the sambal were okay. Didn't care too much about the hard rice cake either. Good to be dipped in soup but was also alright. The soup was a lentil soup of some kind. It was okay, nothing too memorable but didn't hate it either. Good atmosphere and great food. The restaurant had a tavern ambiance with a bar and kitchen on one side, while the ample seating on the other half of the establishment. I wasn't able to find any dedicated parking spots but sufficed with street parking. Service was nice and friendly, food came out at a good pace for a Thursday night. We ordered the following: Es Soda Gembira: refreshing but wished there was more hints of the coconut pandas syrup. Es Cendol (with jackfruit): located on the drink menu but definitely more of a dessert; very delicious. Sate Babi: pork was cooked and charred well but the peanut sauce was a bit overwhelming. The skewers felt drenched in the sauce. Nasi Campur (added pork belly and potatoes): a great platter to introduce yourself to different flavors and spices; the eggplant was my favorite, very soft and yummy. I felt like the pork belly was a bit too sweet. Ayam Goreng: while the chicken was quite crispy, the chicken was a little too dry for my liking. The overall dish felt a bit lacking for the price. Growing up in Southeast Asia, I often crave the food. Decided to check out Wajan on a whim after a long wait at a restaurant nearby and was pleasantly surprised at the ambience and the food. We got the Martabak Telor Mini (not pictured) and the Nasi Campur with pork belly added on. The Martabak Telor Mini was egg ground chili, shallots, and green onion wrapped in a thin fried pancake. It was a bit oily, but still really good! The Nasi Campur was the star of the show - it came with egg, fried eggplant, curried jackfruit, tapioca cracker, sambal and we chose to add Babi Ketang (marinated pork belly and potatoes) on the side. The pork belly and potatoes were great and super flavorful. The eggplant and sambal were a great balance of sweet and spicy. It was a hearty portion, and we were able to share it between two and be fully satisfied. Such a cute Indonesian restaurant! The wall decor are adorable and the staffs were very nice. It's such a cute little hangout spot and the ambiance is very cozy! The food was outstanding. Everything we ate had depth to it; multiple lawyers of tastes/textures. I'd like to highly recommend something but really there were no losers: chicken and pork satay, martabak tenor mini (egg fried in dough (even better than it sounds), rendang sapi (dry curry beef), Ayam Goreng (fried chicken). The food came out fast. Very comfortable place - doesn't have any pretense to it - just classic PDX vibe. I had a cocktail but others had beer - The cocktail was a little sweet for the food - I'd go with one of the beers next time. We sat inside (we were there on one of the days in the upper 90s) but I can see sitting outside in the shade on most summer evenings in PDX. read more

What a neighborhood gem. It's like an island of Indonesian culture unto itself, tucked away in Laurelhurst. So random and satisfying. We kicked off our afternoon feast with Kopi Milo (a guilty childhood favorite of mine - iced coffee with Milo), martabak telor mini (phyllo-esque pastry stuffed with savory filling and deep fried), and the satays. For entrees we ordered the rendang sapi, nasi uduk with ayam (fried chicken thigh), and the bakmie (noodles). Loved all of the sambals and chili accompaniments. We had the purple sweet potato Kue with rose petals for dessert - a perfect sweet finish to the meal. The child in our party was beyond thrilled when the bill arrived with a handful of his favorite Kopiko (coffee) candy at the end of the meal. I've had Indonesian food a handful of times. I am no expert but I was definitely blown away by the diversity of flavors. We ordered the Nasi Campur, the Kari, chicken skewers, and the Es cendol. The Es cendol came first but it was a welcoming treat since I was partly hungry, and partly feeling warm on this rainy day. Tasty pandan (?) jelly, mixed into sweet coconut milk but not too overwhelming. My sister got the Kari and though it was not exactly what I was craving for, I appreciate the flavors. The chicken skewers on the other hand was totally up my alley. The sauce and seasoning were plentiful and cooked nicely where the chicken was not overly chewy. The Nasi Campur was a fun choice because it had a little bit of everything to choose from, ranging from the boiled egg, eggplant with chili sauce, jackfruit, tempe, and a large tapioca cracker. Wajan is my favorite "little restaurant that could" success story. I visited shortly after the restaurant opened and felt it was lacking in terms of flavor and ambiance. But I just had a feeling this diamond in the rough had some sparkle waiting to emerge. Several additional visits revealed elevated flavor and presentation of their dishes, and the improved interior design created a more inviting atmosphere. The valuable lesson is that it is crucial to give new restaurants second chances. Wajan has demonstrated, for me, the benefit of waiting for a new venue to come into its own. I feel Indonesian food is an underappreciated cuisine that deserves more attention in the US. It is characterized by complex and diverse flavors; blending sweet, sour, and savory profiles in unique ways. Two dishes that I highly recommend trying at Wajan are the Rendang Sapi and the Gado-Gado. The Rendang Sapi is a slow-cooked beef dish with rich and flavorful spices, and the Gado-Gado is a traditional Indonesian salad with peanut sauce dressing. It's deliciousness that will have you shouting praise from the rooftops. We got there exactly at noon (when it opens) and were seated in the covered patio that you get to through the restaurant. Service was extremely attentive and friendly - put a big smile on my face! Portland food scene never disappoints me. I discovered this Indonesian restaurant on Yelp and it's been my to go place whenever I visit Portland. This is such a colorful and welcoming place. We were greeted quickly and fortunately there was space for us so we were also seated quickly. We were unfamiliar with the dishes on the menu but they were well described and our friendly server was ready to guide us. I loved the number of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options! I'm none of those but I try to eat low on the food chain and my kid has a wheat allergy so it is always great to find a place everyone could enjoy. The Nasi Campur and Nasi Uduk are plates that allow you to add a protein. We tried the Nasi Campur with Randag Sapi (a dry curry braised beef). We also tried the Ayam Goreng (fried chicken) and some appetizers. Everything was delicious. Their cocktails are beautiful, refreshing and work either the food well. Wow, this place is amazing. I've never had Indonesian good but I'm glad I tried it! Definitely some unique flavor profiles that are similar to Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. It tastes as good as the pictures look! The sauce on the eggplant in the Nasi Campur can be spicy for people who have a low spice tolerance as FYI. I found it no problem but some people in my group had to skip over it. The Babur Ayam is perfect comfort food goodness, if you like porridge and subtle flavors, this is perfect for you. Highly recommend and a must try! Parking is a bit tough so you'll need to park in the neighborhood. We order the Nasi Campur with pork belly and Martabak Telor Mini as an appetizer. The main dish the Nasi Campur came with rice with Telor terong balado (deep fried hard boiled egg and chinese eggplant in sweet and spicy chili sauce), sayur nangka (curried jackfruit and long bean), tempe orek (sweet and spicy stir fried tempe), krupuk aci (large tapioca cracker). It was very tasty and very filling. I wasn't able to finish the whole dish their was so much food. Had a phenomenal takeout experience from Wajan recently. Their website was super easy to use. Every food item has an accompanying photo and detailed description. They also go above and beyond with customization to tailor to food preferences. They got our order ready right at the designated time. We got the Bubur Ayam (Rice porridge topped with thick-ish soy sauce and shredded chicken), the Lontong Cap Go Meh (Coconuty soup with rice cake and tofu), and a side of Coconut Rice. My brief desciptions above do not do the dishes justice because they're very complex in terms of flavors and components on them, which is what I looove about eating out; I get to try dishes with so many elements that I won't be able to make them myself. Everything was super delicious (even the side rice crackers were tasty) but my favorite of the night was the Lontong Cap Go Meh. The soup is creamy yet light and super drinkable (we definitely slurpped it up!). The rice cakes were chewy but still got the rice grains in them. The fried shallots and other crunchy elements conplement the velvety soup really well. Not to mention the fried hard-boiled egg smothered in umami chilli sauce on top...it's great. Although it's on the pricier side, Wajan is going on the list of place I wanna go back again and again. Can't wait to check out more stuffs from here! read more

To date, we hadn't enjoyed Indonesian cuisine though it had been on our radar for a while. We grabbed takeout while visiting some and we're hooked! This spot and Gado Gado were the ones on our radar and we picked here because it seemed, based on our friends experience, a little more low key. The building is pretty simple and on a corner lot, which made getting in and out easy. We grabbed quite the smattering of dishes as we were feeding 9 of us. I can plainly state that it was all excellent! The Nasi campur with its fried hard boiled egg was delightful! The Ayam Goreng had some great bone in chicken and was amazingly flavorful- in addition, it packed some heat! The Bubur Ayam was also a hit - a savory porridge with Tumeric and chicken - it went well with the wheat noodle Bakmie! The Pork Sate and Gorengan (Fritters) were both drool worthy and we were glad we ordered extra! The spice level went from a little to "Very very spicy". We saw this place during our morning drive and decided to come here for dinner! I was pretty excited considering the reviews on Yelp and that the last time I had good Indonesian food was in Philly in 2014! We ordered the Ayam goreng and nasi uduk with pork belly! The ayam goreng however was fried chicken which was too oily - I kept dabbing my chicken to get rid of some oil and it was almost like Any other fast food joint fried chicken! The drinks were alright, nothing great! When I asked for a Togo box sauce cup, I saw some attitude which was uncalled for! Food is good, not great! As someone who grew up in Indonesia and am well aware of how hard it is to find the exact ingredients as the OG, I'm very careful with this review. I did walk in expecting everything to taste just like home, so I put the lack of authentic ingredients in mind while writing. A lot of the dishes did not taste exactly like how they did it in Indonesia, but of all the Indo restaurants I've tried in the US, this is the closest. *Soda gembira - could use more syrup. Other than that, this is something I would definitely reorder. *Es cendol - my only complain was how the cendol (pandan jelly) wasn't chewy enough, kinda like they boiled it too long. I wished they used gula jawa, but again it's hard finding gula jawa in the US. *Gorengan - we got all 4. The batter was too thick. *Sayur nangka - I LOVED this dish. The spice, condiments, everything was prefect. *Rendang - the rendang sauce was too dry for my liking. The egg was amazing, only thing missing is the MSG. But the crispy on the side was AMAZING. I was so impressed with how close to home it is. *Nasi uduk - The chicken wasn't juicy enough. but oh God the egg balado was soo good. That was the moment I knew I should've gotten their sambal *Soto betawi - my FAVORITE of all the dishes we ordered. The meat was so juicy, soup was packed punched with flavors, which is exactly like how they made it back home. This is why I would highly recommend eating it with the rice served or the flavor will be overwhelming *Dessert - I honestly forgot what it was, but their dessert left a really good impression. I was told they constantly change up their dessert menu, so I know I'll always be getting dessert there whenever I come back. Overall, I thought it was worth it. My wife found Wajan and has been meaning to this this place out so we ordered takeout on their user-friendly online website. We ordered the Nasi Campur ($13), Kari Ayam ($13), and Sate Ayam ($7.50). Pickup was a breeze because they had everything packed up neatly in a bag. Nasi Campur - This dish includes rice, telor terong balado (deep fried hard boiled egg), sauteed eggplant, sayur nangka (curried jackfruit), tempe orek (stir fried tempeh), and a crunchy tapioca cracker. I've never tried tempe before, but it was so delicious. I would compare it to crispy tofu. It was flavorful in a sweet and spicy sauce. The rice was cooked well with little bits of onion crunchies on top. I was expecting the curried jackfruit to have a tart taste, but it tasted like a curried potato. The one disappointment was the deep fried egg, which I was expecting a crispy batter. But the exterior was thin and soft - didn't have a crispy texture. The tapioca cracker was a nice palate cleanser and added a good crunch. Kari Ayam - This dish includes rice or rice noodles (your choice) with spicy yellow curry, boneless chicken breast, golden baby potatos, green onions, crispy bean chips. The spicy curry added a great kick of spicy after sipping it. It was like a broth rather than a curry sauce. The chicken was a bit chewy, but flavorful from the curry. Unfortunately, they gave us a side of rice instead of the rice noodles we chose. I didn't realize this until we got home so I recommend double checking your orders. Sate Ayam - These were char-broiled chicken skewers topped with peanut sauce and cucumber relish. You get three skewers and each was full of great flavor from the spread of peanut sauce and tart from the pickled cucumbers. Since they grill the skewers using small wooden sticks, I noticed that some bits of wood splinters stick to the inner part of the chicken skewers. So be cognizant of when you bite and pull the chicken meat off the skewers. read more

The food was unique, as I've never really had the dishes they offer before. I'm always up for trying new things and landed with the ayam goreng and nasi campur. The fried chicken had a decent flavor but a bit dry. I approach new food with an open mind but I have to admit that I didn't enjoy much from the nasi campur. The flavors were not particularly to my liking, which is not to say others wouldn't enjoy it. read more
