The clasp frame was coming off my nice leather satchel, which also needed a bit of sprucing up after 15 years of heavy use. Mr. Sam was great! He fixed the clasp, added more holes in the strap and looped the excess so that it's not in the way. He reconditioned the entire bag and now it looks brand new. This shop has lots and lots of choices of fine leather goods to carry your stuff. Leather so soft it feels like a well broken-in saddle. I went in on impulse, needing to replace an old handbag, and I came out with two -- different sizes, different shapes, different number of pockets, different closures, different colors, suited to two different kinds of activities. Very disappointed with my experience. Came in for the simple task of adding extra holes to the straps of a leather backpack. You will see in the photo that 4 holes were added above the original holes on the left and 5 holes added to the right. Of the holes that were added all but 2 of them are not even in line. This all occurred in the span of 5 minutes which cost me $20. The work was done in a careless and precarious manner. Do not suggest going to this place even for the simplest of tasks. read more

I took in 3 designer handbags to get fixed, none with easy issues to resolve. Some were leather issues, some were hardware issues, some were both. Sam talked me through all of my options, what he thought made the most sense, and listened to my concerns and suggestions. The handbags were done in a few days and they are wonderfully repaired and ready for everyday use. He can do nearly anything, and he if can't, he'll tell you and probably still find a way to make it work. There's no point in wasting your money on other leather shops, if I need more bags repaired or fixed this is my only stop. Since I was going on a trip the next day, I sheepishly asked him if he could do the job overnight. My mom and I entered this store because she remembered it when it was located in another part of the Village. While walking in the street, my mom and I both saw the cutest pink and green wallet in the store window and quickly walked in. I was really amazed by all the leather bags in the store. There were many bright colors and everything was clearly high quality. Fabulous hand made leather. The store owner pointed out that one of his purses would fit my phone, and I was like "YEAH RIGHT" but it did. I usually hate carrying purses but this was a perfect sized and light weight shoulder bag. I've wanted a leather duffel for over a year. I was shopping in the West Village and another store owner directed me to "small leather shop off of Christopher street." I found a bag that was "ok" at another shop but the customer service was terrible. I felt ignored. I took the advice offered and walked over to Waverly. I walked in and heard two women talking to Sam about how pleased they were with their purchase. When he finished with them he turned to me and said, "I'm all yours." He showed me a variety of options. Once I found something I liked I considered companion pieces. I ultimately bought a beautiful duffel. Larger than I planned. Thick nice leather. The design is fantastic. Intelligent. The workmanship is great . The lining inside is strong ballistic material. The straps are well sewn. I can't see ever having to go back for any kind of repairs. I love the duffel . It's so stylish and I'm proud to carry it. It's the kind of item that you can keep and use for a life time. I asked Sam to engrave it. He said he needed at least 20 but no more than thirty minutes. (I communicate similarly). I had a snack at the restaurant on the corner and came back to see that he thoughtfully engraved both sides . Salesmanship is important to me. As a family business he not only knows the products but is rightfully proud. I was educated in the process of how the bag was made and how to care for it . He also measured the bag to show me that if fit the regulations for carry on. We then had a great discussion about travel as we have both seen much around the globe. It's great to give a Yelp review that isn't griping about petty issues. I was glad to spend money here and will consider custom pieces in I flew back to LA the next morning in style. The manager/owner (Sam?) of this shop is so awesome -- friendly, down to earth, genuine guy, almost like a grandfather you would want to grab some coffee with and chat. We exchanged some stories and lingered there a bit, because we felt so relaxed. We ultimately decided not to get the bag, and he was nice about it. Sometimes people can get aggressive or mean if you turn down their sale/product, but he was calm and laid-back, and that was a relief. I don't like when people are bullied into buying something ; that's not right. He sells large duffel like bags, suitcases, shoulder bags, purses, knapsacks, etc. Products are good quality -- you can rub out smudges or scratches in the leather. But since products are good quality, it's not a cheap bag. You get what you pay for in this case. Shop is small -- you walk in and instantly see all the bags displayed, and to the right is a small repair/work station. No returns. Not sure about store credits. read more

We stumbled across Waverly Leather when exploring the neighborhood. A handcrafted leather briefcase caught my husband's eye from the window. Sam, the owner and maker of leather goods, was the quintessential craftsman and lovely to interact with. He showed us the features of several bags, all handmade in shop. My husband chose the original briefcase that caught his eye and I picked out an incredibly gorgeous backpack made of calfskin leather. Each bag had the right number of (and appropriate placement) of useful pockets, clasps, and zippers. Both are waterproof (both in leather and lining), and appear extremely durable. The owner was there and had a number of nice, good quality belts for me to choose among. The belts were not inexpensive, but if you've been shopping for a quality belt, they never are. He was affable, accommodating and very pleasant. He also cut the belt to size and fitted the buckle to my liking while I waited. I honestly adore my bag, and I only bought it several hours ago. The handcrafted leather makes me drool. I love it. And the book-bag is so multi-faceted and versatile that I can only compare it to a Swiss Army Knife (but in bag form, lmao). But what I appreciated, even more than the amazing book-bag, was the wonderful service. As I walked in, the shopkeeper seemed less interested in the completion of the sale than he was in the passive conversation about the sale. I learned about the process and where the leather is ordered from and that custom orders are how the products are produced. (That's right- CUSTOM orders. I didn't believe it either.) Throughout the time I spent in the shop, I could tell that there was a real, genuine pride present in the work. I haven't experienced anything like that since moving to the city, and I greatly appreciated it. I will definitely be a frequent customer at this shop, although I have no need to be, because the leather is guaranteed for life! :D And even if I never have to purchase anything from this shop again, I still feel like going back, simply to talk with the shopkeeper.
