I love Wayback. I have only been to the East Windsor location, so this was my first time at the Rocky Hill restaurant. First, I have to apologize for minimal photos. I was in Rocky Hill to have the charging port on my phone replaced (separate review) and decided to eat while i waited. I had to come back for the restaurant photos after my phone was fixed. Juan was my very friendly and helpful server, and also my cook. The burger was good-sized, juicy, and delicious! Instead of french fries, I took a 'walk on the wild side' and tried the tater tots. They were really good! If you have never been to Wayback, here is my personal observation: The burgers are comparable to Five Guys. The difference: Five Guys gives you double fries and charges $8+ more. An option: Eat at Wayback and use some of the savings to upgrade your meal with one of their amazing hand-dipped milkshakes. Came out to Jake's Wayback Burger today for their National Cheeseburger Day with a Classic Twin Cheeseburger $5.00 I was also able to change the cheese and get what l like along with grilled onions & mushrooms with a reverse grilled roll. The classic twin burgers are regular priced at $9.69. The service was right on and the worker that took my order was very nice and gave great service. It's a very clean and organized restaurant. I've always loved this place. Unfortunately they have new cooks. My burgers were always hot but the past two times I've gone they have been cold. I don't know if they're pre-cooking them. Also my onion rings were cold. Both times I arrived before the time they were ready. Hopefully they see my review and address this issue. I haven't gone in awhile due to this. read more

Today I had a classic single as part of the National Cheeseburger Day Special Event with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, relish, ketchup, and mustard. Can't remember when I had a better burger without going to Ruby Tuesday's. I also tried the Cinnamon Toast Crunch shake, ....out of this world. Holy Crap, what a delicious burger! This place looks like it's in an old house or something, but they had a much better kitchen as well as indoor and outdoor seating. We chose outdoor as it was nice outside, and the griddle smell would linger on the clothes the rest of the day. I ordered the Cheesy which had 2 patties, lots of cheese, and the buns were inside out and grilled! It was a great burger. The fries were nice and hot and there were plenty of them. If you're looking for a good burger and are tired of boring, flavorless crap, then give Wayback a try. read more

I had a very disappointing experience at Wayback Burgers. The restaurant was not clean at all, and the overall environment felt very unhygienic. The kitchen area looked dirty, and many surfaces around the restaurant appeared poorly maintained. Unfortunately, the food was also very disappointing. It did not taste fresh and the quality was far below what I expected. Even worse, shortly after leaving the restaurant, we started experiencing severe stomach pain and vomiting, which made the whole experience even more concerning. Cleanliness and food safety are extremely important in any restaurant, and this place clearly needs significant improvement in both areas. I have been to this Jake's Wayback Burger several times over the many years they've had signage. Each visit is unpredictable. They may have a completely different work force and management team from the previous visit. They may be closed. It may take 10 minutes before you order when you're third in line. The food quality varies. And then you may have a string of pretty good visits. I know all this first hand. After a string of less than ideal experiences, I took a break for a few years until this week. Recently, I've heard people say they love Jake's. Not this one mind you. But still. I was looking for a quick bite in the area and I noted that the parking lot was only a quarter full. Seemed like a good time to try again. For me, this was an above average Jake's visit. I ordered the "Big Easy" burger and regular fries. This double smash burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, pepper Jack and remoulade was better than I expected. The beef was well seasoned, good quality and cooked as well as one can cook a smash burger. The fries were below average though. The thin style fries weren't as crispy as most people like and they were somewhat limp. Service was polite and efficient. And the restaurant was clean. The overall vibe was somewhat joyless though. Although there were some takeout orders, I was the only person who ate there. I didn't see the workers smile or talk to each other at all. If I could give 3.5 Stars, I would. Since I can't, my experience was closer to 3 Stars. I've been to many Waybacks and this one is the first to need a negative review. Chicken Tenders where half the size of normal and the pickles where over done do much that the breading was splitting off of the pickles. Not the cleanest or the fastest either. Speed I could deal with if the food was of a better quality. I would have ordered more tender for my son as he was super hungry but I'm not waiting 25 minutes which was how long it took when we're were the only people here. read more

This chicken sandwich looked like a f****** vegan burger but in the picture it looked comparable to the standard Chick-fil-A sandwich. I also said no toppings but I got pickles,. We stopped at Wayback Burgers after a long adventure of jumping nearby. Needless to say the kids needed to eat and Wayback did not disappoint. The staff was patient and friendly as 4 indecisive kids decided what they wanted. Everyone had a hand spun milkshake topped with whipped cream. We enjoyed everything from a classic chocolate shake to a more fancy Brownie shake. The brownie was rich and mouthwatering. Cheese fries were a favorite with the kids and one order would've been enough to share with 2-3 people. If you have people who aren't burger fans they have other options as well including hot dogs. The burgers are delicious and I promise you won't have a bite left at the end. Specialty burgers are on the menu but it's also nice that you can create your own as well. The restaurant itself is small with just a few inside tables. During nicer weather there is a porch area outside for seating. Since we visited during the colder months this was not open. I also absolutely loved the signage in the shop which brought humor and awareness to being kind, being respectful and cleaning up your space. These things should be automatic but sadly these days that's not always the case. I read all of the signs, laughed and of course had to take the pictures attached to this review. I had dinner here a few weeks back and enjoyed my impossible melt so much I still think about ti from time to time. Maybe it is because the toppings are not toppings that i would have normally selected: Impossible Burger with Swiss Cheese, Sauteed Onions and Spicy Garlic Aioli Sauce on an inverted buttered bun. . When I unwrapped the burger I was not at all impressed by what I saw, but it was really tasty. I will definitely be back. read more

National Hamburger Day and BOGO...what a deal! Didn't turn out that well though. The burgers were very good, the fries and onion rings were excellent. It said on the email I kept receiving that it was BOGO either on the app or on location. I realize that this was a push to have people start using the app which I had downloaded but not registered at yet. They would not let me get the BOGO without ordering on the app but I was not able to register as they did not have any wifi. Never tried before and went to the closest one near me. Went in and looked at menu and the staff didn't acknowledge us at all. One employee was on the phone while the other one was messing with the friers. Waited a good ten mins and still no one said anything to us. I noticed how dirty and runned down the place is. I went to this restaurant for the first time tonight. The place was clean and the staff were friendly. I got the Classic burger with regular fries and decided to try the Apple Pie milkshake. The food is a sold C+. I've had 5 sandwiches from this location and they're all pretty good. Good enough to where I've come back multiple times. The service is ok here. Employees are not the nicest people in the world but that could just be a CT thing. They do seem to be want to be on their phones more than working which leads to a loss in quality of food. Horrible! First it's dirty and sloppy looking...salt and pepper shakers sticky and dirty! First my friend ordered, then the two guys were too busy to take my order. Finally ordered and went to sit down and be called. My friends order came up and I waited, and waited. Finally came here with my fiance after always driving by and hearing good things about this place. And well we were not impressed! I was in the mood for a good burger and fries. And that is not what I got. The burger was just ok, nothing special. And the fries were a real let down. We got the cheese fries and it appears they were fries with melted shredded cheese on them. Maybe even done in a microwave...not very tasty and not very cheesy either. Also the service was very slow, we went early on a Saturday and the place was empty. It shouldn't of taken so long to get our food. Plus are burgers were done about 5-10 mins before the fries. I would of expected them to come out together. So reading a lot of the reviews on yelp about this place being dirty or bad customer service.... Idk what they are talking about.. Maybe just old reviews? The place was clean inside and out.. She asked if I knew what I wanted and when I said no she told me to take MY time and let her know when I was READY... To me that's huge... I can't stand places that tell u to let them know when you are ready and then they half harass you 30 seconds later.. I read the menu... Which isn't all that extensive.. Reminded me of capital lunch in new Britain or Augey and Rays in east Hartford... Dogs.burgers.shakes. PERIOD. I opted for a single Jake burger (cheeseburger with my opt in toppings) and onion rings with a chocolate malt milkshake. The person BEHIND the counter brought my milkshake out to me at my table instead of calling me over to get it.. And shortly after the cook called me over (open kitchen) to hand me my burger and onion rings.. As for the food: The burger was decent... Nothing special at all... I felt like they could merge SONIC and this place and not have to change the burgers... I couldn't tell the difference. Not overly greasy... But the patty was without a doubt small/thin... My tomato slice was thicker than the meat... Not impressive... In THAT respect I would have rather had SONIC. The onion rings TASTED good but were clearly just out of the fryer and did not get the chance to drip for a few minutes or even get tossed into a grease catcher first (paper material much like that of a McDonalds cup holder used to catch grease before putting fried food on plate)... So wasn't exactly happy with them .. Could tell if I ate to many out of my SIDE order I would have spent most of the day on the porcelain throne.. The shake... A deep fried mecca, you will want to wash your cloths, take a shower and brush your teeth after eating here. Jake's, located minutes from Rocky Hill, CT high school offering up chain restaurant quality hamburgers at twice the price of McDonalds. Don't get me wrong, I think Jake's has a time and a place. I would definitely not consider anything on their menu as anything more than junk food, alright for an occational guilty treat. A nice alternative to Wendy's, Burger King and McDonald's. This location loses some points based on the overwhelming smell or nonstop, everyday grilling of hamburgers, chicken, frying of onion rings and other items. Jake's also offers hand dipped milk shakes which I have never had without chunks of ice in it which really ruin the flavor and consistency of this drink. Despite my Jonesing for a milkshake on occasion and their proximity to my office I still would prefer driving the extra 15 minutes to Mortensen's for a milkshake Out door seating and dining is nice but plan on at least a 30-45minute wait if you go in the summer. They do not have the ability to keep up with big crowds or peak orders given the small grill area and typically 3-4 persons working in this ice cream and hamburger shack. Should not be considered seriously as anything more than an after noon snack shack location. If you are planning on ordering out, plan on your order being thrown in a paper bag, some assembly will most likely be required. read more

What a complete anomaly. I wish i would have read the reviews before coming here. They pride themselves on saying their food is fresh, and not kept under a heatlamp, yet the fries for my order were taken from.... you guessed it, a heatlamp (see photos). I have no idea how they manage to pack something with so much grease, and so little flavor. The only thing i could taste on my burger were the toppings.... yummy tomato. Sorry, i thought there were 3 patties of beef here somewhere....? Frozen fries, Frozen Onion Rings, milkshakes with ice chunks in them from the inferior ice cream they use. How much did I spend? $30? Got dinner from here tonight, and the food was ok. Normally it's way better. 3 orders of Mac and cheese bites, a burger, and a veggie burger came to almost $28. My main issue is that I asked about the rewards program and if my phone number is my rewards number and the employee goes oh I don't know. Do customers get a rewards card? Again, the same answer, and I said ok, I can try Wayback corporate to find out. I feel like I shouldn't have to do that though. I spend almost $30 every time we go here (or more) and this is only the second time I've ordered online, so I'm kind of miffed they don't have their program together. We went here when this was a pizzeria, and I was a bit sad to see that place go (Crustworks?), they did a decent pizza but i think maybe there are too many italian places around here already and they didnt get enough customers. Anyways ... OK my timing was pretty poor on this one - we walked in at 8:59 and they said sorry, we are closed. All we wanted was a milkshake and they said as long as it's not cooked on the grill they could do it. THe milkshake was pretty good, not really all that cheap for the size you get .. I think it was over $4 and about the same size as a McD's shake which I believe costs $1 less, but the Jake's shake was better - I think worth the extra buck or whatever it is. I asked about the gardenburgers (this was before i read micheles yelp about this..) and they fry them! I guess it's easier than keeping a whole griddle clean and animal fat free to not contaminate the veggie patties. Next time we are passing by, we will give this a try .. Good burger, good shake, ok fries. Had a single cheeseburger, fry and a strawberry malt shake. Filled me up and it hit the spot. I ordered online and by the time I got there it was ready. Burger was tasty with all the fixings. Fries were ok, generic fries (five guys does it well) and the shake was strawberry and hit the spot to wash down the meal. I sat and ate in the parking lot and observed about 10 cars pulled in one after the other at about 7pm on a Monday evening. Pretty busy for a Monday night. I go to Wayback Burgers monthly on average. The food: The burgers are tasty and it's nice to get a quick burger that actually looks like ground beef. The consistency of the meat seems a higher quality than the fast food giants. Yes, they're greasy, especially with multiple patties, but it's a burger for crying out loud! Better than it being all dried out and a dreadful experience to choke down, or something that is called "beef" but you aren't so sure... The fries are tasty and look like they came from actual potatoes. Onion rings are okay but not worth writing home about. Same goes for the skakes, not bad, not amazing, just decent. I haven't tried anything besides burgers, fries, rings, and shakes. The food is consistent too. Service & Price: Service is quick overall and the employees at this location are always pleasant. Yes, you won't have your meal in 30 seconds... but that's a good thing since it's always as fresh as possible. The prices are a bit high. For a cheesey burger, small fries, and drink at $12, that's a bit steep. But I would rather pay the extra 4-5 bucks over the big fast food restaurant's equivalent. Verdict: Wayback Burgers is a solid establishment for what it is. I feel like these higher end burger chains (Mooyah, Wayback, 5 Guys) overall are perfect for a quick meal and offer much better quality than the big 3 fast food brands. read more
