After the movies my husband and I decided to get an early dinner. We found Wences and said let's get it a try. It a hot Tuesday afternoon and we could see people sitting outside having a good time. We walked in and sat at the bar, hoping for good service, and that is just what we got! The bartender was just as nice a cheerful as she could be, the servers were also fantastic. This is quite the funny place to invite a vegetarian to. Yes, there's a salad and French Onion Soup. That's what I love to eat when I go out to dinner - exactly what I fix for myself at home every night LOL. Once we all finished laughing at me because the menu is jam packed with meat and seafood, I asked the server if I could just order fries and Mac and Cheese off the children's menu (that's what my 4 year old niece sitting next to me, ordered - sounded better than my usual soup and salad). The server said I could order whatever I wanted from the children's menu when someone filled him in on the vegetarian thing. He suggested the garlic cheese bread and assured me it was very filling and tasted great and that he'd upgrade me from children's fries to a whole side. Now we're cooking! He was a good sport. I've got to admit - that cheesy garlic bread was freaking delicious. I felt like I was spitting in the face of a weeks worth of workouts for it and that was fine with me because it really was that good. I was full after 2 pieces but had a third because there was nothing else to do while my animal carcass eating dinner companions were buried in their meals. I actually ended up ignoring my fries which is a twice yearly guilty pleasure for me. The wine menu is great - several of us found the perfect selection for our meal. The cocktails were mixed well too - very tasty! For you meat eaters out there! The Chilean White Sea Bass got rave reviews from the two who ordered it. The 3 who shared the Raw Oyster Bar Mix said they were all very fresh, the sauce was a perfect compliment and they'd order it again. Filet Mignon was prepared "to perfection" and the Rib Eye Steak was devoured with glee. The southern gal ordered the Cajun Jambalaya and said it did not disappoint. The four year old said the Mac and Cheese was almost as good as Kraft Mac & Cheese which actually is quite the compliment. I'd give five stars if they had one solid vegetarian option besides soup or salad. Hey guys - veggies have to eat there too - we can't skip mom's birthday dinner - give us ONE main course as delicious as what our carnivorous counterparts get to enjoy. I'd have run to the kitchen and kissed your cook if y'all had even a frozen veggie burger to warm up for me. Glad to know and read one of the reviewers stated she was able to bring her dog to the restaurant and dine together. I will NEVER spend my money to dine with pets. Not everyone like to eat with pet dander all in a dinning establishment and some people may even be allergic and can have an anaphylactic reaction. Here's the thing with Wences... their food is really great, which is what has brought me back regularly since they opened, however.... their service is consistently pretty terrible. Their servers are inattentive and it typically takes the food an extremely long time to come out. Still, I return because I love their drinks and food and the ability to dine outside when the weather is nice. I am rooting for Wences and am always hoping they will finally get some fabulous servers, as I know it would be a game changer for them and be much appreciated by all of their customers. read more

A 5 star restaurant that is walking distance from my house? YES PLEASE! My family has been to Wences several times, and have been blown away by the food every single time! Between the 4 of us, we have had almost everything on the menu and it is all delicious! It's definitely one of those restaurants where you let your friends or family try a bite of your food because it's so good. Even the salads and soups are amazing! The seafood is always fresh, we quite often get crab, calamari, sea bass, or the mixed grill, and the steaks have been cooked to perfection every time we've ordered it. If you have a chance to try the lobster chowder - do it!! If you are able to order the crab and artichoke fondue - you will not regret it! I believe that when it comes to good food, wences is one of if not the best restaurant in Pleasant Hill. However, the service is just plain bad and has been for quite some time. I usually give places the benefit of the doubt maybe on a busy night or any one experience can be off on any given night. But consistently, service is slow, slow, slow and often orders are wrong. I think that ordering to go or doordashing is the thing to do. Unless you got plenty of time. I've also noticed that prices have gone up and portions have gotten smaller, not a good combo with service being so bad. read more

We live locally and eat here regularly. We have never had a bad meal here, from the prime rib to the pork chop, to the fish and chips. Even breakfast/brunch. It's always been great. Service is always very pleasant as well. Sunday evenings they even have live music. Atmosphere is upscale and relaxing. It's a bit on the pricier side, which is the only negative thing to add---otherwise we would eat here more often. read more

My family and I went to Wence's for the first time last weekend. What a treat! My husband had the halibut and raved about it. I had the fish tacos - very yummy! I loved the menu - it has a great variety of main entrees, small plates, salads, etc. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes. The atmosphere is definitely an improvement from the previous restaurant. They added touches which make the restaurant much more comfortable (booths, big screen TV). After reading reviews we decided to give this place a try for the first time. Service was prompt and friendly. The restaurant is very clean. We ordered crab chowder which was flavorful and hearty. The wedge salad was a large size with chunks of blue cheeses, red onion, bacon and dressing. The gnocchi with pesto was delicious. They make the pesto in house. My husband and I went to Wence's for a Friday date night. He had the ribeye. I had the halibut with pesto, the special for the night. The halibut was so wonderful that I can't forget it. It was the best dish I've had in a while. Beautiful on the plate, flavorful and nuanced. Totally Awesome! My husband liked the ribeye with blue cheese and roasted garlic and inhaled the sweet potato French fries with truffle oil. The. steak was well prepared. Great restaurant and just love the food. The atmosphere is not fancy, but very nice and comfortable. The Lobster Chowder was awesome with great taste and not salty like a lot of restaurants make a mistake with. The Crab Stack is great too and like a nice seafood salad. The Grilled Halibut is also awesome and so tasty, yet healthy. Everything looks so nice with excellent presentation and the prices and reasonable for what you get. My girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised with this dining spot. We were actually going to go to sushi next door, but they were closed after lunch, not to reopen until 5pm. So we walked over to Wences because it was right there and they were open at 3:30. It was actually pretty busy for that time of day, which we took as a good sign. The menu had a nice selection of decently priced options. I had a cup of lobster chowder and a Junior's Burger. The chowder was amazing! It had nice sized chunks of lobster meat in it. My hamburger was huge and delicious too. My girlfriend ordered the sweet potato fries and a seafood salad. She enjoyed both as well. My husband and I went on Saturday to celebrate our 14 year anniversary. We didn't have reservations but they got us seated as fast as possible since it was very busy. The manager went above and beyond. We ordered the crab cakes and calamari as an appitizer. Both were great they even brought us coctail sause when we asked for it. Large parties beware...... we have eaten at Wences many times over the years and love the food. There were 15 of us in town for a mini family reunion and I chose Wences. A third of the family was coming from SF and misjudged the traffic. When I arrived I informed the manager that part of our party would be 15-20 minutes past our reservation, I told her I understood if she needed to give our table away but she told me it was ok and would seat us anyway. I was very thankful. The dinner was amazing except that they forgot to make my sister in laws entree, it arrived 15 minutes after everyone else but we were having a great time. The problem occurred when our check arrived with not one but TWO 18% gratuity charges!! My husband showed the "mistake" to the waiter and had them correct it. The waiter had been wonderful until hat point but seemed annoyed that we weren't going to add a 36% tip??? Mind you our bill was already $590. Even worse, when I went to the ladies room I walked past the manager and the waiter bad mouthing my family and saying it was the least we could do for being late to our reservation. They shut up the minute they saw me but I was absolutely disgusted. Pleasant Hill is a tight knit community and I'm making sure everyone knows about the management at this restaurant. Good food is one thing but service is what brings people back. They are sharks, go to Eureka or Jacks. read more

My husband and I had an excellent dinner. The only reason I give Wences a 4 star rating is due to the very high noise level. This was the first time we came to dinner, but have been to lunch before. Both lunch and dinner food is 5 star. For dinner my husband had pork chop which was very tender, seasoned perfectly and I had mussels which were seasoned a little too spicy this time but when I had them for lunch the seasoning was perfect. For appetizers we had artichoke & crab fondue and deep fried squid. Both were very tasty. We found Wences through YELP the first time we were in this area, and we enjoyed our lunch so much that we came back for dinner even though it is 30 to 40 minuets from where we live. Food is good . Service changed a lot since they added the other side. I called in a pick up order and i was told 20 mins. I know that they are slow from ordering previous times. Got there 35 mins after i called the order and i was told that its not ready yet since they got busy. There's only a few people 3 to be exact inside and a couple outside. It took another 15 mins before i recieved my food. Come on almost an hour for a phone in pick up order. And the servers were not friendly at all they don't really care how long you waited. Instead of apologizing she keeps on saying we are busy. Not a good customer friendly place. Will not be recommending this place to anyone. read more

We visited for a weekend brunch that was thoroughly enjoyable. The interior of the restaurant is elegant, but there is also a few tables outside. They are along the parking area but are somewhat shielded from it. The brunch menu includes a nice selection of omelets, benedicts and other egg dishes. My family asked me where I would like to go on Mother's Day for a family dinner. I suggested Wences as I had been twice before and enjoyed my meal. I am so sorry I did as it was a very dissatisfying and disappointing meal. Oysters were terrific. Cocktails were great as well. Then we had dinner. Salmon and Halibut meals were ok. One son ordered Filet Mignon medium rare. Another prime rib medium rare. We had no silverware. Waited over 5 minutes. Asked another waiter for utensils. Finally we went and got from front desk. The prime rib was well done. Filet was inedible. I was actually embarrassed I suggested this as a special place to go for dinner. I can get cocktails and oysters elsewhere. read more
