As a Puerto Rican living in Indiana, finding a restaurant that caters to our cuisine is difficult to find. I live a little over an hour away from Wepa Cafe and honestly I would drive here every day if I could. Walking in, I am immediately transported to a typical restaurant back on the island. The decor, the music playing, and the delicious smell transport me back to the island as you walk in. Jorge and his crew are top tier people! Everyone is friendly, attentive, and you can tell that they are putting so much love into the food. Let's talk food, I am critical of PR food outside of the island, but there is nothing to be critical of at Wepa. Everything is fresh and made to order. The flavors are exactly as they are back home and it is all absolutely delicious. My family and I ordered so much off the menu and we were impressed by it. We ordered Alcapurrias, rellenos de Papa, Sorullos de Maiz, and Bacalaitos to start. We also got jugos de parcha and let me tell you, that juice is FRESH!! As for our entrees, everyone got mofongos which are to die for!!! As well as rice and beans with shrimp, tilapia and bistec. Everything was delicious. I can't emphasize enough how good the food is. Lastly we shared a flan and a tembleque de coco. That tembleque is the best tembleque I have had in my life. As for the flan, it transported my 93 yr old grandma back to her childhood letting us know that the flan tasted exactly as the one her grandmother used to make. That in itself should let you know how good the food is. I honestly wished I lived closer but I am willing to make the drive to visit a piece of home. Incredible! This and Town and Gown are the easy must try spots in the area! I love the fun beach vibes, silly music, and gluten free plantains used as buns. The sandwiches, dishes, apps, drinks, and desserts are all incredibly top notch. I'm surprised with the consistency for a small spot, blown away by the balance of curious tasty flavors, and hope there's a franchise in the works. Wepa is friendly, easy going, has outdoor tables, plenty of space, and does everything possible for an American territory cuisine. Yes, you do not need a passport visiting Perto Rico! I ordered from here and never got my food! I called the restaurant and was told they had given my food to their contracted service yet could not / would not even try to contact the driver who had failed to deliver my food. I called emailed Wepa to no avail so I contacted mt credit card company. Wepa never reached out to me. You can see from my web history I seldom leave bad reviews but these people are crooks. First impression is quirky atmosphere, but then you notice how spotlessly clean it is! Had lunch- deep fried stuffed mashed potato ball, roast pork and seasoned rice with red beans. Everything was very good, potato ball was crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Stuffing of ground pork went really well, especially with the sauces they brought to the table, Roast pork was tasty and the rice complimented nicely. Service was quick and friendly. I was very excited to discover this place - I was in Puerto Rico a few years ago and really enjoyed the food. I can now say Wepa Cafe is legit and I will be back. Laid back vibe inside this restaurant on Earl avenue. We shared an empanada, alcapurria, chicken mofongo & roast pork entrée. Fried items were simple, but crispy and really good. Mofongo with the chicken and creole sauce was dynamite. That creole sauce alone is worth the trip here. It's chopped and seasoned vegetables. And it is awesome. The roasted pork/rice/beans dish was also great. Juicy pork and rice/beans with great seasoning. Salads that came with the dishes were also good with the house dressing. *Highly* recommend this place even for people who don't often try different cuisines. It's meat, rice and beans. It's good. Several reasons to give this wonderful gem a five star review - let's start with authentic Puertorican flavors!! From the appetizers we had the alcapurria and the empanadilla de yuca, both of them solid but the alcapurria brought me back to my grandma's cooking!!! The wife asked for the mofongo with lechón and that my friends was solid PR chow....that mofono had the right amount of garlic and taste, the lechón was the real deal. I had the carne frita with arroz con gandules - and it tasted just like Xmas. We had some takeout for the rest of the family - again mofongo with garlic shrimp and needless, even after being full after great dinner we still had to try a bit at home and did not disappoint...again, solid!! Flan and tembleque de coco were the perfect ending for a great meal. Even if you are full, just ask for it yo go - that is what we did and so happy that we did!! The next driver for the rating was the outstanding service by the staff. In addition the owner sat down with us and had some delightful conversation! Don Jorge is giving Lafayette a gem of an experience- I am certain there is no other offer like this unless you drive several hours to chi-town! Great job, don't miss a chance to try it and be adventurous with the menu and flavors. While visiting my son from Florida. He recommended this place so we went ahead and tried it. I had the pulled pork sandwich. My wife had the steak sandwich. Both were very delicious and very favorable. Wish they came with a side like fries for the price point as we have experienced in other Puerto Rican or Cuban restaurants. Well, it's like Wepa Cafe found me! This is IT! The food was incredible, absolutely delicious and authentic! It was fresh and felt like home! The owner and staff are the best. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly! I had mofongo with lechon, pastelillos de carne and camarones! My husband had bistec con arroz blanco y habichuelas guisadas y plátanos maduros. The serving size was large! We had tembleque for dessert and it was soooo good! They had fresh juice and piña colada! Truly, the best! If you're far, it's worth the trip. I love Cuban food, but have had little luck finding it in either West Lafayette or Ames, IA, the two cities I have lived in for the last 50 years or so. So I was delighted to hear that a Puerto Rican restaurant had opened in Lafayette. I was even more delighted to discover that the food was excellent. Ordering the food for take-out was a bit of a challenge. The restaurant does not have much of an internet presence and I don't believe it's possible to order online. When I called to place an order, I had some trouble understanding the woman with whom I was speaking (that may be attributable to the fact that I was listening to her with 75-year old ears) but she put someone else on the line and things improved. I also had some trouble finding a menu, but eventually found one in the pictures section of this restaurant's Facebook page, which they apparently use as their website. (Googling wepa cafe menu will take you to a nice menu, but unfortunately that's for a comparable restaurant with the same name in Idaho.) With these problems resolved, I ordered food for me and my wife: she had the shrimp with garlic sauce with yellow rice and beans; I had the carne frita (pork chunks) with white rice and beans. The beans in the yellow rice are scattered throughout the rice; the beans with white rice come in a separate container, in a sauce that seems almost like a soup. Both meals came with a salad. We also ordered two side orders of maduro plantains. The pickup was smoothly handled; the food was on time and the order was completely accurate. It was also delicious. I was a bit concerned that the pork might be rather dry because it did not come in any kind of sauce, but it was so flavorful that it was not a problem at all. I donated my beans to my wife, who loved them; she also very much enjoyed her shrimp. The portions were large enough that both of us got leftovers from our meals. The plantains (one of my favorite parts to a Caribbean meal) were also outstanding, and the orders also large enough to generate leftovers. The salad did not come with a dressing but I found that even without any, it was still good. The prices (19 dollars for the pork, 21 for the shrimp) were not cheap, but considering the quality and quantity of the food, not at all unreasonable. The side orders of plantains only cost five dollars each, which was very well worth it. My wife and I considered this first visit to Wepa to be an unqualified success and look forward to returning soon. If nothing else, I would like to try the mofongo and pork chunks next, as well as some of the sandwiches they offer. read more
