Finding a legit East Coast soft pretzel in SoCal (well at least in my part of SoCal) is usually a lost cause, but West Coast Pretzels actually nails it. I've tried pretty much their entire lineup while sourcing for a wholesale setup, and every single variety is spot on. The quality is always consistent, and you can immediately tell they're doing things the right way with traditional, old-school baking. The Philly pretzel is exactly how I remember it from back East. It has that perfect chew, the right texture, and that classic flavor that's almost impossible to find outside of Pennsylvania. I thought that West Coast Pretzels had permanently closed as they decided to close their brick-and-mortar location in the Valley. To my delight, they are still in operation AND do preorders for pickup all over the city. They have a West LA pickup site near me (in the Rite Aid parking lot on National Blvd), so, as a soft pretzel fiend, I had to place an order. I ordered a few pretzel dogs, Philly pretzels, pretzel buns, and novelty LA-shaped pretzels. They have a huge selection like Philly, Bavarian, Munich, etc. as well as those with toppings--pizza fixings, jalapeno and cheese, etc. Pickup was easy--the truck is covered with pretzel motifs (lol). Everything was delicious but I was most impressed by the pretzel buns/knots and the original pretzels without toppings. They are fantastic lightly toasted--they master the savory lye outside and a pillowy soft inside. If only the pretzels were a liiiittle more inexpensive; I would make a habit out of it! The owner, Kevin, says that this establishment has been here about 3 years opening pre-Covid. Kevin is super friendly and this place is a welcome spot!! The pretzels are fluffy on the inside with a nice slight crunch on the outside. You gotta love 'em when they are HOT!! My son and I tried a Philly pretzel (2 pretzels in one) & an everything pretzel with some brown mustard (delicious!!). These pretzels are made with no milk, butter or sugar, so they are pure pretzel goodness! I happen to like mustard, but you do have options of cheese, etc. on the menu. We also had the lemon & cherry Philly Water Ice which were refreshingly satisfying (not a big size but still refreshing)!! Good parking accommodations and nice clean shop. After passing by this place, several times, my curiosity was piqued, since I am from the East Coast and...love soft pretzels. I was not disappointed when I walked in this afternoon and met Kevin the owner. We talked about New York, pizza, cheesecake, Jewish delis, and, of course... Raised in Philadelphia my entire life and I hold a high standard for my soft pretzels. This place is awesome. I spent $14 for 4 pretzels and it was worth it, for a small taste of home. I understand the cost of living in LA is higher than Philly so the higher price is understandable. Funny story on how we found West Coast Pretzels. We headed from the West Valley to Studio City to try a pop-up store of other Philadelphia soft pretzels, but it wasn't there even though their website said they would be there then. While munching on Henry's Tacos, my wife googled soft pretzels in the area and we found West Coast Pretzels, and are we glad we did! These pretzels are absolutely delicious. They are made to order, so they take eight minutes or so and are hot and soft out of the oven. Wow! The owner was super friendly and told us all about the pretzels. Today was my first time coming to this location. We always passed by and it never seemed like it was open but today we saw the blinds up so we came in. We were greeted by the owner and he explained the menu to us. He is a really nice guy. We ordered the Philly pretzel, pizza pretzel with pepperoni, nacho cheese sauce, and three rainbow Italian ice. They make it fresh to order and the order took 10 minutes to make. Wow. We were blown away with how delicious it was. They were piping hot, Soft insides, and crispy outside. Do you have to be from Philidelphia to be a pretzel expert... I say NO, I grew up in Hawaii and about as far from Philidelphia geographically as possible, but I know a great soft pretzel the minute I find one. I'm not sure how West Coast Pretzels infiltrated my social media feed, but in this instance I'm glad they did. After seeing all the pictures on social media the last week or so, I decided to stop and see what all the hubbub was all about. I pulled up and parked in the adjacent mini-market parking lot next door (street parking was impossible at 2:30 in the afternoon) I quickly looked over the menu and then procedeed to ask what I thought was a dumb question (what's the difference in the Philly style compared to the West coast style?) Lucky for me the gentleman at the window dissmissed my assumption of a stupid question and procedded to fill me in on the difference and subtle nuance differences between the two. I assume he was not just the baker but possibly the owner too, he mentioned he was from Philly and took obvious pride in what he was doing. I ended up with 3 orders of the Philly style pretzels at just under $8 an order and was told that it would be 7 to 8 minutes before they would be ready. After what seemed like an eternity of anticipation, I got my order and quickly made it back to my truck. My bag of pretzels was piping hot and the aroma coming out of that bag was too much to take. I ended up eating one of my piping hot pretzels on my drive home and I didn't regret it one bit. The pretzels were absolutely perfect in looks, texture and flavor. For starters my pretzel had the thinnest dark outer crust that reminded me of a really good french baugette, crispy on the outside but pillow soft on the inside, with just a hint of coarse salt on the outside. Now I will be moving my family to Pennsylvania in about 4 months, and I think if the pretzels are even half as good in Philidelphia as they are here at West Coast Pretzels, my family will be very happy, Aloha read more
