I went in to buy some fresh Salmon and asked where he got his shrimp . He said that all of his shrimp came from Mexico. As I was leaving I saw a stack of boxes of shrimp next to the refrigerator and they had "Indonesia" written on the side. I'll never go there again. read more

HORRIBLE and DISGUSTING seafood. The seafood I purchased here was so disgusting, and smelled so bad I don't even know where to begin. I bought scallops and Sea Bass. Both VERY EXPENSIVE items. Neither were even close to being fresh. Inside the market even has an old fish funk odor which should have been my first clue. After I left the store with the stuff, I drove home immediately and put them in the refrigerator until I started to cook a couple hours later. I should have known this seafood was no good because the inside of my car smelled so fishy after I got home, not to mention the horrible fishy stink inside of my brand new 35 degree refrigerator. It had such a strong funk that I vacillated on whether to cook it or not. Well I did cook both of them in spite of every sign telling me not to. I have no idea what I was thinking. Well, as expected, both the fish and scallops tasted as bad as they smelled. I literally almost threw up after my first bite....no exaggeration. My daughter was over the house eating dinner with me and we looked at each other as we took our first bite and she said to me "this seafood is nasty. When did you buy this? I told her that I just bought it a couple hours ago. She couldn't eat it and neither could I. I threw the dinner down the garbage disposal and we ordered a pizza. read more

Amazing! Fresh! Delicious! Wow....it is so hard to find an incredible seafood market who truly wants to deliver only the best seafood available. The lox are divine! The halibut was fresh from Fiji and absolutely scrumptious! This is our new favorite place for lox. Marilyn was friendly and provide customer service at it's finest. WOW- paid $34.00 for Cod, which I have barbecued Cod numerous times. They said I could cook it on foil so I started to crisp the skin on the grill first, and was warming a piece of fool next to it so it could be flipped onto the foil, however when I went to flip it, it just disintegrated to mush with no possible way to save it.... all you saw was skin, mush and bones sticking out. So much for the 3 guests I had waiting for dinner... embarrassment at its best... so I just called and I was told "I cant help the way you cooked it" , with no concern for what I was telling him as he blasted the TV in my ear...I am not an amateur in the kitchen or around the grill... So much for keeping a Customer satisfied... mind you I was told this was a firm flaky fish... aaah NOT. I RUN A BUSINESS AND HAVE FOR OVER 20 YEARS. Where has customer service gone!!!! I'm very disappointed in this business. We planned to make stuffed calamari for Christmas dinner as that is a tradition in my boyfriend's family and placed an order with Marilyn over the phone for 5 lbs of calamari tubes a couple of weeks prior to Christmas. She said we could pick it up the following Friday 12/17 at the Venice Farmers' Market, since that is very local to us. We showed up as planned. Marilyn was not present and neither of her two employees knew anything about the order. One employee named Ninos apologized to us and promised to deliver the order himself to our place the following Tuesday 12/21. I emailed Marilyn on Monday 12/20 to confirm Ninos would drop off the order the following day as planned. I received no response, but the next day Ninos texted my boyfriend asking him to drive to the Culver City Farmers' Market to pick up the order, despite Ninos' earlier promise to drop it off himself. This was quite inconvenient since we had to pick up my boyfriend's mom from LAX that day, but as we were not given a choice, my boyfriend went to the Culver Market with his mom straight from LAX --only to be presented with HALF of the requested order! You would think a discount would have been offered to us, given all these problems and the fact that our Christmas dinner was now negatively affected. I emailed Marilyn to voice my disappointment to her directly, and she never responded. I have seldom seen such terrible customer service. In addition, the calamari tubes we did receive were smaller than promised, making them difficult to stuff. I recommend you shop elsewhere for your seafood. read more

I have eaten smoked salmon my whole life, but yesterday I got a small amount at the Culver City farmer's market, and I gotta say that this fish was simply superb. WAY better than what you get at a good deli. I was married to an executive chef who participated in culinary contests, and "once" in 25 years her team made smoked salmon this good!! First, call ahead since their hours and days of operation seem to change sometimes. Also, verify price and selection on the phone first if you are concerned that prices are not posted in store. Having said that, this family knows fish. Their quality is unsurpassed at any price. Even in downtown fish district you don't seem to get product this fresh. Often they will have something like seabass fillet at a lower price though mostly they cater to high end products. They also are one of the very few places in SoCal which sells good quality frozen and sometimes fresh sardines. read more

I went to this fish market and because I have had dinner several times at the restaurant next door and since it was the same owners I thought the prices would be reasonable like there restaurant. Unfortunately it was not. I was disappointed to say the least. The price of their lox was considerably higher then the Ralph's grocery store that is in the same center. When they showed me the lox the label on it was the exact same one from the market. I guess I will keep ordering my fish from Santa Monica Seafood. I bought littleneck clams a few weeks ago and ate them the day after purchase, they were great. This week I gave the mussels and ceviche a shot, disappointed is as mildly as I can put it. Ceviche first, it was a shrimp cocktail really and it was light on shrimp for the same price go to mariscos guerro and be happy. Now the mussels, 26hrs later and they are all dead, I pulled them out of the fridge to get them ready for tonight and they are all opened and won't close. I asked the guy if they would be OK the way they packed them, tightly wrapped in a plastic bag on ice, until today and he said yes after looking online he was wrong and I'm out a pound of mussels. I might give the clams another shot but part of being a fishmonger is to let the customer know how to properly keep the product until cooking and in that regard these guys fail. read more

Went to this location in Simi hoping to find some place in the valleys akin to Santa Monica Seafood for a big fishie/shellfishie Italian dinner (relatives in from New York). Walked in and there were a few cut of fish, about 8 or so shrimp, no whole fish, and practically bare and spare cooler cabinets. The website made it look big but I should have called first. Congratulations to Simi . . . you now have the BEST seafood in LA right in your backyard. Really!! I grew up in New England where excellent fish is taken for granted and have lived in LA for almost 30 years. Like Helene, I discovered these wonderful folks at the Hollywood Farmer's Market and for the first time since moving here, consistently excellent and super fresh fish. My husband and I drive nearly every Sunday morning from Tarzana to the market mostly for their fish. Nearly all fresh enough to be eaten raw or barely cooked. . . the scallops are sweet . . . the salmon always fresh . . . and there is halibut, seabass, black cod, sole . . . all A+++++ quality. Marilyn and her whole family are so warm and welcoming - you feel like part of the family. And she often tucks in a little piece of something new to try . . . expanding my palate. They make smoked salmon and ceviche themselves that is exceptional!! My only criticism . . . that they did not open here in Tarzana where I could by something fresh every day. I am honored to write the very first Yelp review for this AMAZING business! I have been buying seafood from these folks at the Hollywood Farmers Market for a very long time. When couldn't make it there on Sunday, I would drive to Pasadena to get their seafood at that farmers market. I live in studio city and will drive ANYWHERE for West Coast Seafood. All of their fish is sashimi grade. Just made a sashimi platter for dinner with ahi, hamachi, scallops, halibut, and salmon. Amazing. And at te store, it is more than fish to purchase. They have wonderful salads, sushi hand rolls, olives, and soon cooked fish dishes Fresher and more flavorful than any fish I have ever had. And Marilyn and her family are wonderful. They make you feel welcome and part of the family. I love supporting family- owned businesses, and this is definitely one worth supporting. We went to West Coast Seafood on the day we wanted to make sushi, hoping that it was going to be as good as the reviews made it seem and boy, was it! They had all the fish we loved and more! we were able to get Salmon, Halibut and Blue Fin Tuna! The daughter of the owners was super friendly and more than accamodating with her service. As a visitor in the area, I was hunting for a fishmonger with great quality seafood that is sushi/sashimi quality. I found it here at West Coast Seafood. I purchased 1.75lb of ahi tuna for poke bowls. The fish was absolutely delicious with great texture and taste.
