I have been a West Elm fan for awhile. Until today, I only shopped online. It was nice out so I decided to do some window shopping. This store has much less in it than you would think. The layout is such that you see a lot of "rooms" meaning there is less room for actual product. I'd prefer more product. I went in and was met with not only a pretentious sales associate but equally rude and snobby associates team when I approached them to ask for help regarding a duvet cover/bedding set the associates began bickering about who had to help me to which one replied "oh I thought she was here to do inventory" which led to the ENTIRE associates team to laugh in my face. And when a sales associate finally did help me she continued to make snarky remarks and laugh the entire time she was "assisting" me. And on top of all that on my way out of the store another sales associate chased me down and began to sarcastically ask if I needed anymore help in an obviously fake British accent. VERY condescending and unprofessional. An amazing company in both quality and selection, but this experience was exasperatingly disappointing. read more

I love west elm but yikes have they gotten expensive. They also used to have frequent sales and promotions. Not anymore. However this review is not about the prices, it is about my experience in the Portland store specifically. First, I was not greeted when I walked in despite many employees doing nothing. I walked around the store for awhile looking for a specific couch that I was planning to order and when I couldn't find it I went and had to literally stand right in front of someone saying excuse me over and over until she noticed me. She said they don't have that one on the floor. I asked if there was another store close by that might have one and she looked at me like I had just kicked her dog like I could have the audacity of not knowing that "we are the only west elm in the state of Oregon, maybe you could try San Francisco?" K, lady, I'll just drive 10 hours to look at a couch? Then I asked if she could at least show me the color that I was hoping to get (a dark olive that truly looked dark olive on the website), in a huff she walked over pulled it out and said "this one" and walked away. It is more of a light sage grey, not even close to dark olive. I have swatches coming in the mail so I should have just saved myself the time of driving downtown, finding parking, and being ignored by the "designers." Save yourself from wasting your day and just order online, it's not like they'll have what you want to look at in store and they'll be offended if you even ask. Or even better maybe try bench made modern as they have quicker lead times (half the time) and offer healthcare worker discounts. read more

This store has the worst costumer service. I ordered multiple pieces of furniture from them. A week after receiving our order they had a sale on the same items for a significant reduction. I called to see if they could do a price adjustment and they told me, I would have to return the items flowed by repurchasing. After returning, they would have to have someone come pick it up, they would charge for that, recharge for shipping on new set and overall it would cost me to pay more than the original purchase price. Essentially, there is no price adjustments. This is just one of many bad experiences I've have. I love the style of West Elm furniture but will no longer be shopping with them in the future. After months on back order, my credit card was charged without any notice and a table shipped to the Pearl. I am in Italy for nine months and so I cannot pick it up. Nor can I call the store as my phone is on vacation hold. I can have someone pick it up for me but I cannot get anyone to help make authorization. I just keep getting robo email responses from a central office. So the table is sitting there, paid for, and will eventually be shipped back and I will be charged to ship it. read more

My wife and I ordered new leather chairs. They told us it wouldn't be shipped until February (4 months from our order date). We understand the issues with supply chain, however, they debited our account and reversed it, every week, for over a month. When I called and emailed their company they claimed their was nothing they could do... we also spoke with Cindy Chhong, WILLIAMS-SONOMA, INC., Retail Service Team Sr. Lead and she was no help. I don't understand how a company in business to make profits, would not accept our payment until the item is shipped? We asked them to accept our payment, even called our bank to try and push it through and West Elm still said they couldn't help. This was a rather expensive purchase, so needless to say having a debit then reversal every single week is unacceptable. Terrible customer service on top of a terrible debiting process. read more

They lost one, damaged the second, and now, despite the chair reaching their delivery center on July 9, keep pushing the delivery window out (currently around August 3). BEWARE! I ordered a couch, and I'm in the middle of a nightmare. It arrived 10 days ago. It is a 3 piece sectional. The one piece that came with legs/feet - has the wrong color legs/feet, the wrong color seat cushion, and no back cushion. The other two pieces are missing the legs/feet, so it has metal brackets that will cut into the hardwood floor if any weight is put on them. I've called customer service, gone into the store to speak with a manager, and here I am 10 days later with NOTHING resolved. When I scheduled my delivery with West Elm (mandatory $250 'white glove' delivery), I paid another company to come pick up existing couch that morning. I now have nowhere to sit in my living room and there is NO urgency on the part of West Elm. I've been a loyal customer (with a coffee table, dining room table, bedding, etc. from West Elm). I'm not spending my money here. If you can't walk out of the store with the item you want... DONT BUY FROM WEST ELM! The only bright side is Tiffany with customer service has been very kind and is appalled by the situation. That said... Nothing has been resolved. Take your money elsewhere! read more

Completely blown away by my experience today. It was so much better than I'd expected based on reviews I'd seen. Blake was the first person who helped me. I was returning a rug, hoping to replace it with something different. I'd been told the return would be for store credit only, but Blake -- friendly, professional -- credited my Visa. He then turned me over to Lauren who helped me find a replacement rug. She showed me the store's inventory and the online rugs, navigating the website much more efficiently than I could have done. Jessica (Manager) at this West Elm location is awesome! Long story short - I purchased a couple chairs that arrived damaged to our home. We refused delivery and were waiting months for the replacement chairs and could never get a straight answer or status update on when the actual replacements would arrive (we spoke to multiple Customer Service reps at West Elm). I finally resorted to calling the PDX store to see if they could help and was connected to Jessica. She stated that she would get this sorted out for me (gotta admit i was skeptical based on my multiple attempts) and, like a rock star, she delivered on her promise! She got back to me with a voice mail with specific details on my chairs - in transit location, delivery window, etc. BIG Thanks Jessica for your excellent customer service! I never got to thank you personally, but I appreciate your follow-up and help in getting my situation sorted. We got the replacement chairs and they're great! read more

Let's face it, customer service isn't what it used to be. It seems the customer isn't always right anymore. It's no wonder we tend to prefer shopping online over in-store these days. Well, not so with West Elm. And particularly the Portland location. Their manager Susan is the reason to shop in person. She puts the customer first. Her focus was on helping me no matter how many employees or phone calls were vying for her attention. And no matter how much of a hassle my one little purchase was--long story, but she was a real problem solver. And she always remained professional, patient and polite. I can't speak enough about how refreshing it was working with her. I sincerely wish that every time I went shopping I could work with people as delightful as Susan. Speaking of, I got the feeling that her co-workers respected her and enjoyed working with her too. She was a great example of leadership. West Elm is lucky to have her. read more

A nice store to get stuff for your place. It's a more urban contemporary Pottery barn, or at least that's how I think of them. It's not cheap, but you know that as its in the Pearl or that it is owned by William Sonoma. I have bought several things here. They have good quality and good sales. What a disappointment. During the first week of June my husband and I ordered a bed, two dressers, two nightstands, a dining table, and four dining chairs from West Elm, all totaling over $10k. We were told that items would arrive in 2-3 weeks, but once we paid, and were on the hook, that got estimate was pushed to 8-12 (!) weeks. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, all we could do was wait. In mid-July, our "white glove service" delivery for the bed was scheduled, and the following Sunday, two sweaty delivery men who did not speak English showed up with our dressers (which were not due to arrive for at least another two weeks) but NO BED. When we reached out to West Elm customer service we learned that the bed was somehow lost in the warehouse, so they placed a "replacement order" and assured us that our bed would arrive in 3 weeks. It still has not arrived. We called customer service again today, and were informed that the bed is now backordered until November (!!!!) and there's "nothing [they] can do." This is the poorest display of 'customer service' that I have ever experienced. When our order was misplaced, we should've been bumped to the top of the list for a replacement. It is ABSURD to expect a customer to wait five months from the order date to receive a piece of furniture that is as essential as a bed. We've cancelled the order, and I plan to scream from the rooftops about this utterly terrible experience. The take-away here... Shop Local because West Elm is GARBAGE. read more

Here's the scam: although the catalog portrays West Elm as some sort of Mecca of inexpensive furniture, it turns out that the laws of physics have not yet been repealed and the good stuff is no less expensive than similar furniture at Crate and Barrel. The quality of the cheap stuff is more or less in line with the price, sadly. That said, the whole line is rather well-coordinated, making it easy to pick up a lot of furniture (and furnishings) at once without having to fear that your new nightstand might offend the end table. Think Pottery Barn for people under 30. Also, I've never seen so many throw pillows in my life. If you are a straight male, this means that 50% of the inventory is of no interest to you. read more

Nothing but great service here from the staff. They always suggest ordering in store instead of online to save on shipping which has been great. Even when we had a change of heart and wanted a bigger version of a dining table and had some trouble with it, ending up with store credit instead of a cash refund, we went into the store and they were able to put the $$ back on our CC. Another perk is that for some reason this location always has stock sales, sometimes up to 40% off that isn't extended if you buy online. Definitely worth a visit just for that! read more

After moving to the Portland area in July (2014), I set about decorating our new house and replacing furniture that didn't make the cut. West Elm catalogs make my heart go pitter-patter, so I noted some items I liked and headed down to the store with the hope that I could save on shipping and buy locally. I've been there a sum total of three times, each at vastly different times of the day/week. And would you know, not ONCE has someone greeted me. Despite seeing numerous staff members, my existence has gone unacknowledged each and every visit. And it's not that they don't know I'm there; they avert their eyes when passing rather than making contact. To the point that I've done some real soul-searching during and after my visits. Do I look unworthy of their time? Like someone who doesn't have money to spend? Then I come to the same conclusion: I'm well dressed, articulate and undeserving of their apathy. BUT, regardless of whether or not I possess those qualities, I deserve to be smiled at, said hello to, and treated like a paying customer. Because I am. More importantly, I'm a human being. Of the three times I've been in, I've purchased items twice. They don't carry all the online/catalog items in-store, so my first purchase had to be made online. The other two times the cashier was kind and professional, which leaves me at a loss as to why that doesn't extend past the register to the sales floor. During all three visits, in order to find the items I intended to buy, I had to wait in line at the register to get help. In the end, I'll likely continue to make purchases at West Elm when the mood strikes. Yet I can't help but think that this store isn't living up to the brand's expectations in terms of customer service. Customer service issues aside (though they are never really beside the point), I like their stuff. At this point anyone that has shopped with West Elm is aware of the aesthetic and price point. (In case you didn't know, they are owned by Williams-Sonoma Inc., who also owns Pottery Barn.) I don't find the big ticket items to be worth the price, as the quality doesn't seem to reach quite as high. Still, I have several pieces that I use functionally and decoratively, and I love each and every one of them. But I'm not quite sure it's worth the blow to my self esteem. read more

Well, the people at West Elm will be able to help you. They will even help you order online if the item that you're looking for is not at their store. They are friendly and very personable. If you'll wait long enough, they often go on sale. 10-20% off once in a great while is a good deal if you have patience. I love their desks, tables, throws, pillows. I'm partial about their lighting fixtures. It looks a tad bland for me. I prefer them over Pottery Barn which is a bit too country and frilly. Nice furniture and housewares, but... I ordered a bed in the store a month and a half ago and still don't have it. Two weeks after the purchase, I had to do some investigating to find that the bed was backordered. I placed an order for a different bed online to replace the order for this one, and got a tracking number and expected delivery date. After that delivery date passed, I called to discover that the bed had arrived but was not deemed "first quality," so that had to send it back. I assumed that they would then order another one. This took them two weeks to do. I called again after learning this, and was told that they would call me back within 48 hours to tell me another expected delivery date. It's been five days. If you can buy something in the store that is in stock, go for it. If they tell you they'll order it for you, head for the hills. Crate and Barrel is basically the same thing, and the half hour it'll take you to get down to Tigard should be a welcome relief to six weeks of sleeping on the floor. read more

Don't buy their furniture. My husband and I wasted over $2k on the Peggy sectional and it is NOT a quality piece of furniture! Also- their customer service is useless. We've sent them several emails about the quality of our sofa and have not heard back at all!! From the moment our sofa arrived, we were disappointed as it was the most uncomfortable couch we've ever sat on. The buttons on our couch are stiff and painful to sit on! We tested out the floor model couch in the West Elm store in Portland, OR many times before deciding to purchase the Peggy sectional and it was very comfortable, so I have no idea why ours is so uncomfortable, but even guests have remarked on this issue when visiting our home. We usually put a blanket down so that we have some cushioning between our bottoms and the painful buttons. Unfortunately, within one month of its arrival, the first button fell off of our Peggy sectional as well. I was busy as we were in the middle of a move, so I set the button aside and decided we would have it fixed later. Six months later and we have had even more issues with the sofa. Mainly, the legs are not stable on the bottom of the sofa. It is definitely some sort of defect with the construction of the piece. One of the legs is at a total angle and seems to be slowly collapsing or coming loose from the sofa base. It clearly was not attached to the sofa base very well. Keep in mind that we use this sofa in our formal living room- meaning it is hardly ever used! Most of the time we hang out in our family room upstairs. Because the couch is so uncomfortable, we avoid sitting on it at all. Another issue we are having with the sofa is the cushions- after only six months they have "flattened" out and are now too big for the couch. You can clearly see the overlap (and yes, the cushions are pushed all the way against the back of the couch). Even the "back" cushions have been flattened and extend past the couch backing. It is impossible to fluff them or squish the back to their original shape. Not worth the money and we are not the only customers having trouble with this sofa or with West Elm pieces- a simple google search will turn up dozens of dissatisfied customers having serious issues with furniture. I wish I could post photos of how terrible our $2000 sofa looks. Such a waste of money. read more

West Elm, I love you. I wish you were closer. And I can't believe we almost left Portland without stopping by. On a recent shopping spree to Portland (I mean, a trip to visit some family...), the hubby and I ended up spending almost our whole morning at Bridgeport Village, getting us some shelving at the Container Store (I found a coupon for 15% off - too good to be ignored.). By the time we left, it was around 1 and I suggested that we stop somewhere in the Pearl on the way home for lunch. As I'm sitting at Noodles & Company down the street it hits me: Isn't there a West Elm around here? So we bust out the iPhone, and sure enough: West Elm is two blocks down. Not only do I love the furniture (someday, I will have an overlapping squares bed), but we very desperately need to get my hubby a computer desk - and Crate & Barrel was letting me down so far. So we cruise down the street and within 5 minutes, I have found the Jay Desk. At a very reasonable price too! (How a desk is only twice the price of the hutch is beyond me. Clearly, in this case though, the hutch is a little overpriced.). So we got it. Then were told that the next pick-up time wasn't until 3 (which was another hour away), a bummer. We let the guy know that we were from Seattle, planning on heading up right afterwards, and they made an exception for us. By the time we went two blocks down to get the car, the boxed up desk was waiting for us to load right into our car, no wait at all. Someday when I win the lottery, I'll buy more furniture. And come with a U-Haul. read more

I just moved here from Seattle about 2 weeks ago. I did some christmas shopping here last week a couple of times and everybody was super nice and helpful. I had inquired about a dining room table with benches and also a bed frame/night stands when I was in. They said they were having a huge sale after christmas and to come back then. My husband and I returned today and spoke with Nick, who helped us order all of our new goodies for our new home. He was super nice, helpful and very organized. Eeeeee, kid in candy shop mode! I went to West Elm for the first time a few weeks ago, and am so feeling this store. The vibe is chill, beachy, classy cool. Kind of reminds me of an episode of House Hunters International: Islands. Walking in I found myself inundated with a lot of cute merchandise, not as expensive as I'd expect. I am SO FRUSTRATED. I bought a mirror from this location- it was in stock but I couldnt buy the one they had on site so I had to order it for delivery to the store- I was assured it would arrive before Christmas (purchased Dec 2nd)- well, it has still not arrived. Not only has it not arrived, but SEVEN people have told me it's been in Portland at "the hub" since Dec 7th and is just waiting for someone to get it on a truck to bring to the store. I called today again for an update and was told it's actually still in North Carolina- and won't arrive for another 2 weeks and that is if there are no more delays. I am not able to cancel this order until it arrives in store either. I paid $80 for IN STORE PICK UP in addition to the cost of the item- absurd (it was $300 if I wanted it delivered to my house lol). I love West Elm's items, but this is ridiculous. A $300 mirror, plus $80 just to pick it up from the store- but if it never arrives at the store then what am I supposed to do? I have called the store so many times, customer service so many times- no one seems to care- I know it's out of the control of the store employees, but I am still really really frustrated. I'm never buying something that needs delivered again- only in-store items that are available then and there. Don't buy anything that needs to be shipped- it's impossible to deal with. read more

We ordered a sectional online about 6 weeks ago. Shipping originally was estimated for 2-3 weeks, that time has long passed and the expected delivery date keeps changing to later and later dates. We have called multiple times and customer service says they cannot access any information about shipping until it has passed the expected delivery, except that keeps changing so we haven't been able to get ANY info. We recently purchased a large amount of furniture including living room chairs, two beds, a buffet, and several tables, etc. Our experience overall was really good. We like the designs that they have come out with recently and their service really is excellent. The in store sales people go above and beyond and the people that delivered the furniture were fantastic and super professional. We did end up with a delicate table that we noticed was damaged, but we let them know and they delivered a new one within about ten days and picked up the damaged one in the process at no charge. The entire process was easy and we really like the furniture. read more

Last February I ordered a headboard, and it was supposed to be delivered two months later in April. I kept checking the tracking and it would say arriving April 21, then 26, then 29, then May 3 and then May 6. I made at least 6 long phone calls, and eventually one on the ball agent, Mark, requested a dock search. That resulted in nothing found, they don't seem to have any way of tracking their own items. Apparently it made it to Portland, but after that who knows. I called in again today (by now I was making sure they took notes), and said if they can't find it they should cancel the order, and place a new one for me (so that I might actually get the item someday). I have literally spent hours on the phone with them - if they were paying me for my time, they would owe me money at this point. When I placed the new order, I requested that they waive the shipping fee. After consulting management, they said no. Seriously? She actually said that now that I wanted to place a different order, they were doing me a favor by refunding the previous order. I explained that they had already charged me for an item (and the shipping) that I was never going to receive, since they had no idea where it was or might be. My only alternative was to cancel and walk away after the refund, or place a new order. Since I want the item, I placed the new order, which I will have to wait 2 more months for. I know that I am seriously taking a chance here, having read some of the other reviews. Thinking of banding together with some of the other unhappy customers to move forward legally if this company doesn't actually deliver. Isn't selling goods to people for money and not providing said goods called fraud? read more
