This venue was one I frequented many times about fifteen years go. As more and more restaurants opened on Long Island, it fell off my regular "rotation". I am happy to say, much like the joy of riding a bike and discovering what you once loved, so was my return experience at West End Cafe. I hosted a table for 8 with a dining group I organize, and we were seated promptly quite close to the bar, right inside the main entrance. I chose Long Island spring Restaurant Week to revisit this highly acclaimed restaurant. While some restaurants lessen their portions and omit popular dishes from their menus this week, WEC did not. I enjoyed an outstanding and handsome portion of their avocado and black bean dip, served with thin sliced plantain chips. For my main course I chose the shrimp risotto, which consisted of six jumbo grilled shrimp and mushrooms, sliced asparagus and other herbs. The risotto itself was cooked to perfection. It was neither undercooked nor sticky. To those experience in both eating it and cooking it, you can attest to how delicate a dish it is to prepare. My table mates enjoyed the short ribs, salmon, and a gigantic dish of chicken served over fettuccini. For dessert most of us opted for the pistachio parfait. A must-have! My only reason for issuing 4 stars was the 30 minutes we waited for someone to take our order and present us with menus. We passed the time with the water and bread basket, and I'll chalk it up to the craziness of Restaurant Week. I told my friend and fellow dinner club organizer that this place will now be one of our regular spots. I have passed by WEC more times than I can count and why I never went, I really don't know, but thankfully I finally gave it a chance. On a Saturday night the place was packed and people were still waiting for a table after 9pm, so reservations are a good idea. The wines by the glass include a nice selection that can please lots of palettes. They start you off with some warm rolls that are wonderfully herb-y. We started out with some apps to share. The sashimi pizza was delicious. A scallion pancake topped with avocado, spicy peppers and tuna; everything worked so well together with a hint of spice, it was really great. The crispy duck tacos were excellent; they come 3 to an order, but since there were 4 of us they offered to add a 4th to make sharing easier. The burrata with fresh figs and proscuitto de Parma was a lovely take on a popular item. Entrees are hearty. I opt'd for the special striped bass over spring succotash. The fish was cooked well, with super crispy skin, as were the veggies and it was a light and lovely dish. Everyone enjoyed their meal. So on to dessert! This restaurant deserves more stars than the max I can give. In my opinion, this is the best establishment around that location. My first time but others in my party say it's consistently incredible. Reservations recommended unless you are going during an off time. Also, I wouldn't recommend this place if you are a vegetarian. It's mostly meat and fish. Only 1 pasta dish and that was ravioli. I could have made a meal out of the rolls brought to the table. Crusty , a variety and plain delicious The sauce from the muscles I could have drank right from the bowl. Too good to leave one drop over. Crispy duck tacos-- a treat. Crunchy taco , generous amount of duck served with a veggie slaw that just balanced out the taste. They were tremendous! My ahi tuna salad was phenomenal. Also a generous amount of rare cooked ahi, avocado, mushrooms, carrots, something that tasted like pickled ginger. The taste all together was heaven. I tasted the lamb from the rack of lamb cooked medium. Like butter!! Served with mashed potatoes and spinach. Just perfect Decaf cappuccino and key lime pie to die for. Delicious cappuccino served with a crystal sugar stick. Just perfect. Excellent service. Can't wait to go back. Came here for Easter dinner with my family. Although the food was ok, our experience with one of the servers put a damper on our night. I will say our main waiter whose name I can't remember was really sweet and tried to make up for it which I appreciated. The first time my table was introduced to the server with pink/purple hair, she was practicing her discus throw with the appetizer plates. She expertly placed the plates on the table so that they clattered with EVERY utensil and cup. That takes skills to miss every open space on the table to only place it in the least likely place. I'm not sure why she chose now display this talent when the Olympics were over but my family and I dismissed it. My sister then asked for a napkin so she could clean up a spill. The woman comes back (annoyed I'll add) to display her additional frisbee talent and flings the napkin on the table. We all looked at her dumfounded. I think she realized she was wrong and asks "Did you want me to sop it up for you?" and aggressively pats down the table. At this point I was genuinely confused than mad because I wasn't sure which sport this was since she made the spill worse and stormed off. I understand people have off days hence why I don't usually review on the servers or waiters but this waitress's attitude level was unacceptable. There were too many times we tried to dismiss her behavior but eventually we had to request that she didn't come back to our table for the rest of the dinner. I feel in most cases a manager would've came over and apologize but it wasn't until we were leaving that my sister went to talk to the manager who insisted she's usually a bubbly person. Overall: 4/5 Tucked back into the corner of an unassuming strip mall in Carle Place is a charming venue for an enchanting date night. Good food and a surprisingly cozy atmosphere have had us coming back. COVID-19 Precautions: 3.5/5 Overall precautions were adequate, but nothing beyond what seems to be the minimum requirements for dining at this time. The hostess station has been moved to right outside the restaurant with a giant hand sanitizer dispenser right in front of it. All of the staff wore masks, but not gloves. The hostess instructed guests that masks were required when not seated at their tables, and was quick to enforce this rule when she spotted someone not following the rules. The restaurant has added an extensive amount of outdoor seating along the sidewalk outside of the plaza and has a reduced amount of indoor seating. We received paper dinner and dessert menus, but they seemed as though they may have been reused. The silverware did not come wrapped. Between customers we saw the staff clean and sanitize the tables. Ambiance: 4/5 (Based on outdoor seating) The outdoor seating was along the sidewalk in front of the restaurant. Potted plants, trellises, and umbrellas lined the curbs, and did a surprisingly good job of making it feel cozy and welcoming even though we were feet from the parking lot. The plaza has a glass roof too, so you should be sheltered even if it were to rain. Food: 4/5 The menu was slightly condensed from what we had seen in previous visits. We started the meal with an Ari's rye Manhattan. It was a great Manhattan with a brandied cherry and blackberries frozen into the ice, but didn't have as strong of a blackberry flavor as expected from the description. For our main course, we got the shrimp risotto and the braised short ribs. The short ribs have been a favorite of ours on previous visits and was mouthwateringly juicy and tender. The risotto was well cooked with buttery seasoned shrimp, al dente veggies and creamy risotto. We finished our twilight summer dinner with key lime pie which was a perfect seasonal treat that blended tart and sweet wonderfully. We will definitely be returning, and we hope they get heat lamps so that the outdoor dining can be extended in the fall. Service: 4.5/5 All of the staff were friendly and our waitress was attentive without being overbearing. The only small mishap was that we didn't receive the complimentary bread that we saw other tables get before their meal. A tip for Bathroom need in this shopping center lot in Carle Place. I happened upon the West End Bar and Grill in the corner of the lot of stores and it was opened. There is a sign on the door, Bathroom for customers only. A charming young lady did allow me to use their bathroom. T.G. ! I wanted to buy something at their bar to take out. But they do not have takeout cups and I wasn't in a situation to sit and relax at their lovely looking bar or stop at this time for a meal. I thanked her and told her I would come back to eat there. Her reply, you will get really good food here. While this place is in the corner and the shopping lot sadly is not full of active stores, it is a place to look for and next on my list to try, with a follow update after. Ok WEC... you've definitely redeemed yourself after today's visit. Long story short a family member passed and her memorial lunch with the family was here. Today I got the right thing and damn it. I'll for sure be dreaming about this dish. Oooof. I ordered the Pan Seared Shrimp with Risotto. Yum yum yummm! It had peas, wild mushrooms, and asparagus in it too. Solid choice! I ate that around 1p and I know I will not be eating dinner. I'm still incredibly full! If you see that on the special menu... get it. So tonight my wife and I checked out West End Cafe in Carle Place, NY. Don't let modest appearances deceive you. Modest on the outside, but classy on the inside. The dinning room is CLEAN! No sticky tables! Reservations are highly recommended because of this restaurant's high repeat customer base. We were seated in a simple table for two. Our waiter was very helpful and gracious to us navigating the menu. I had ordered my peach bourbon crush which was hitting the spot on a hot day. When asked what we wanted we said, " Tell the chef to surprise us, just no fish for the wife"! Well, we were in for a culinary journey. First, duck tacos. Now let men say this, we have never eaten duck.... EVER! These were amazing! The little bit of hoisin bbq sauce gave it a depth that made you forget what you were eating ! Second, zucchini fritters. Compare these to almost like latkes. Zucchinis are locally sourced. Crispy and moist accompanied with a lemon chive crema! Third, grilled flatbread with arugula, basil and prosciutto. I appreciated this because some people use too much prosciutto. And it can over power the the rest. This was a perfect balanced amount with a blue cheese crema that gave a perfect zing! Main courses... Wife: Romano crusted chicken over pappardelle pasta with a spinach, tomatoes, mushroom, capers, lemon butter. It's sounds like a lot but so simple. Every bit was delicious and made you want more. Myself: Pan Seared Jumbo Shrimp Risotto... Lemon risotto, asparagus, wild mushrooms, tomatoes. This dish caught my eye right away. I was happy chef Luis Rey read my mind! I was able to pick every subtle flavor profile. From the pop of lemon to the subtlety of the tarragon. Every bite was something different and kept your palate dancing ! Dessert: Caramelized Banana Split. Think of it a deconstructed banana split with gelato! Torrone gelato, Salted caramel, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, candied walnuts. Every little bite was a sweet ending the meal! You have to experience this for yourself. Few of us drive and took a few circles before finding the place and few of us walked and was scratching our heads between this place and the strip mall adjacent to it. Went there on a Friday night about 30 minutes before closing. A huge group just cleared from the place and we had all the staff waiting on us! Very nice service and nice ambience too. My husband and I came here for dinner last Friday at 6:30 pm and we were glad we made reservations because this place was packed. It is located near our local mall but in a shopping center without much traffic because there are only 2 other stores in the center. There was plenty of parking and we were seated immediately upon arrival. I got the grilled angus shell steak since that was the only steak dish available. I originally wanted to try their ribeye but that was a special they longer carry. I requested medium rare but I think our server misheard and thought I said medium:/ My steak was well presented but was too chewy/overcooked for my taste and it lacked flavoring. Thank god for the salt shaker on the table. My husband got the kobe beef sliders cooked medium and romano crusted chicken cutlet. According to him, the beef sliders were cooked to perfection and well seasoned while the romano chicken tasted great with plenty of flavor/moist with a side of hand cut fettuccine. The decorations gave the place a little Italian flare and it was a cozy space. All in all, the food was okay and service was good. Would I come back again? Probably not. read more

I was on the fence between 4 and 5 stars for this place, but when I really thought about it, I couldn't find a reason to give it 4. Although I've heard the hype about this place for years and years (literally at least 10 years), it took me this long to decide to make it to West End Cafe, and even then, it was more the decision of my wife's family. Needless to say, I'm glad I finally got to try this place for myself! At first glance, West End Cafe seems a bit sketchy from the outside. It's located at the back corner of a shopping strip in Carle Place that backs a railroad and seems abandoned after stores close. Nevertheless, once you walk through the doors, a more upscale atmosphere awaits you. One of the things I now love about West End Cafe is the price fixe. $34.95 awarded each person an appetizer, entree and dessert (of course we added some $$ to the bill for wine and cocktails, which were very reasonably priced). Naturally, everybody at the table went for this option, and we happily chowed down on some delicious bread while we waited for our meals to be prepared (2 rounds in fact). For my dinner selections, I chose the burrata (fresh stuffed mozzarella with prosciutto, arugula, sun-dried tomato and crostini), braised short ribs, and apple crisp. My wife ordered the duck tacos, shrimp risotto, and butterscotch pudding. Meanwhile, my wife's uncle ordered the Caesar salad, shrimp risotto and brownie sundae, and her aunt ordered the Caesar salad, short ribs and key lime pie. I sampled every dish, and while I could certainly give a detailed description of each, I'll summarize in just one sentence: everything was incredible! You really can't go wrong with any of the options listed here. We were stuffed! Other than the food and atmosphere, the pièce de résistance was the service. Our waitress was outstanding: friendly, personable, sharp, and just the right amount of witty. I really wish I could remember her name to give her due credit! Overall very good. Was greatly disappointed in the pistachio ice cream parfait. They used to give more whipped cream (which is delicious) as well as chocolate fudge instead of what tasted like Hershey's chocolate syrup. I was looking forward to this dessert because it was always excellent but now it is no more than pistachio ice cream with chocolate syrup and a little whipped cream. First mothers day and the day before me, my mom in law and my mother all came here along with my baby. They couldn't be nicer and my boy slept most of the time (yay) I also finally had a drink in forever and it was beyond amazing. Cosmo thing with a sugar rim (yummy) my alla vodka was also really great. I can't believe all these years we had never come here. Will definitely be back! Saturday, February 12, 2022 I had dinner with friends at the 'West End Cafe' and everything was perfect. The cocktails were great, the food was delicious and the service was perfect. One of my pet peeves when dining is when the runner disrupts the table conversation and auctions the food. That did not happen here and the waitress Yvonne and the runner provided the best service. I complimented Yvonne and she spent the time to talk with us about her training at Manhattan's finest restaurants. She was so professional, kind and a pleasure to talk with. Not bad for a restaurant tucked away in a strip mall along Carle Place. We ordered duck tacos, beet salad, pan seared stripe bass and key lime pie for dessert. Fairly priced, good serving portion and food is decent. On a Saturday night, we were able to get a table for 2 easily for 8pm in open table at 7:45pm. The stripe bass is fresh and my hubby enjoyed it. I don't think it is a place to bring a date but a nice and presentable place to bring your folks or older family friends for dinner. I called on Monday for (same week) Friday reservations for a relatively large group. The reservationist was super accommodating even though I kept calling back and changing the time. It's always nice when people are understanding and patient. 6 of us arrived for our 8pm reservation and we were promptly seated. We were served an assortment of breads (all very filling, but none particularly unique). For the table, we ordered the Tuna Sashimi Pizza (Green onion pancake/avocado/tomatoes/sweet peppers/sriracha sauce) and the fried calamari with roasted garlic aioli and spicy tomato sauce. The pizza was pretty good and the calamari I enjoyed thoroughly (particularly the aioli). As my entrée, I had the shrimp and lobster meat linguine. The shrimp were too hard (either undercooked or overcooked), there was barely any lobster meat, the sauce was extremely watery, and the dish overall lacked flavor. There was also an overbearing taste of fennel in the dish. Fennel is one of the few things I do not like at all. Granted, this is a personal taste, but I think it is prominent enough in the dish to list in the ingredients. I tried some other dishes such as the ribs which were completely dry and tough. My friend had also ordered a chicken dish which basically turned out to be a salad with chicken. She had also ordered a side salad...since the waiter should know the dishes, I would have expected him to at least mention that she would be basically ordering 2 salads. I can't even say just my dish was off. Everything seemed to be subpar. We were too disappointed to even bother trying dessert. With all the great reviews, I was really expecting a fabulous meal but my expectations were too high, I guess. read more

Hostess was incredibly welcoming and courteously went over the COVID standards with us. Server was friendly and attentive. Appetizers and entrees have a nice, eclectic twist. The four of us enjoyed the arancini and tuna pizza appetizer. We each had different entrees - the seared tuna salad, chicken, risotto with generously sized shrimp and the short rib entree. All were superb and cooked perfectly. We shared the churro dessert with cannoli gelato because we were full, and that was just enough! Upon entering I couldn't believe how full they were. Both bar and restaurant areas. I was seated by a most pleasant host then my waiter Manuel introduced himself. We spoke of his native country Mexico and got lots of fun new adventures for our next visit to Mexico. He was quite informative on the dishes and helped me decide on my appetizer. The Tuna Tartar which was a hit for me. All the ingredients took on a life of their own. Main course consisted of the Lamb, which was so moist, pink and flavorful, we couldn't help devouring it. I personally ordered the Salmon dish. Which at first was prepared too dry; however it was whisked away and replaced with an absolute crispy on the outside (skin) and flaky, peachy insides. It's been a few years since we visited this hidden gem II recalled how great the food was then and I have to say they are not any different then they were from the last time I was here. We didn't have a reservation but they sorted us with 15 minutes though the restaurant was packed. It maintains its charm and once we sorted we were serviced by Roberta. She was great! She took the time to explain the different choices on the menu and made sure that my 14 year old nephew understood what wAs on and how the chicken parm was served. Needless to say he played it safe and got a fancy burger. I though went risky.. had the octopus salad.. my sister had the tuna and my other sister had the risotto with grilled shrimp. Today we had lunch at one of my all time favorite local spots in Westbury, NY, West End Cafe. My Mom and I have been lunching here for nearly 3 decades now, possibly longer. I forget exactly when this place opened but whenever that was, we have been coming here ever since then, and with very good reasons. It is delicious, delightful and an oasis for those who love good fresh food. Today my Mom enjoyed her favorite lunch time choice here, a Brie, Bacon, and chicken panini sandwich with caramelized onions and homemade potato chips. The picture below shows only 1/2 of her sandwich. I keep forgetting to take photographs before eating! My favorite is the California Chicken Cobb salad. It contains most of the typical ingredients of a Cobb salad albeit at a higher level of quality. The California Cobb salad contains. grilled chicken, bacon, egg, avocado, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, haricot verts (French green beans), blue cheese, and a delightfully light dressing. Are you hungry yet? Lol! I would not be surprised. Before I forget to mention it, this place has a very small outdoor eating area, albeit that it is literally off the parking lot. Still a nice choice on perfect weather days. It also has a decent sized bar for those who are interested. I have been here in the evening and both the bar and the restaurant were packed. love this place, i have been here plenty of times. their wine selection is awesome and the bartenders can make a great drink! love that they are enforcing masking/vaccination proof! i came here tonight with 3 other people, two ordered the lamb - i was definitely jealous; it was cooked so perfectly. i always get the tuna pizza appetizer for my meal, i love it. the staff is so friendly and attentive, one of my favorite places ever! read more

Always consistently wonderful. Best pesto bread. Great mixed drinks and wine lists. Love the Parmesan crusted chicken and my cosmo.

I came here on Sunday for a private event, it was my first time at West End Cafe. The service was really good and food was tasty. The started with the Arancini, it was very good but needed more of the sauce for dipping. My entree was the salmon over risotto, both were cooked perfectly. We have been going to the Cafe for about 20 years and always enjoyed the food and service. Their prices have always have been very fair for the Quality and we will continue having meals at this nice spot. The one comment I have is they do not show class by charging for use of a credit care. A few places's can't pretend we are not stupid by listing the cost of the tab and then offering a discount count for using cash. Hmmm. A credit card is used many times for the convenience and a receipt and to keep records. Annnnd today prices are so high one would have to go the bank everyday for cash or else carry large amounts at all times. read more

Have you ever had that experience where you show up for your dinner reservation on a busy Friday night only to learn you're there on the wrong night? That's what happened to me here after booking via OpenTable which gave me a week later. Drama ensues, right? Nope... not here. The greeter didn't miss a beat. With barely a breath she said, "let me see what I can do." Bottom line? She had us seated at a table with menus in hand before 7PM on a Friday night. If that was the only good thing that happened I'd still be floored. It wasn't. Dinner was great as were the starters. I had the chefs special crab cakes and my wife had a salad. Portion were generous and the crab cakes had some zing in terms of spice. The salad has raspberry and also deep fried ricotta balls over field greens. My wife channeled me for her entree and ordered the steak which was cooked perfectly at medium rare served with truffle mashed potatoes and onion strings. I had the short rib over mashed potatoes and root vegetables. The gravy was rich and well proportioned to the rest of the meal. Our server was fast without making us feel rushed. This place isn't new but still packs people in. The bar and restrooms could use an update. To get to the bathroom you basically have to dodge servers coming from the kitchen. On the way out I stopped to thank the greeter again who asked if I wanted her to cancel our reservation for next Friday OR she'd be happy to see us again next Friday.
