We were driving back from Assateague Island on Sunday, and started to get hungry around Annapolis, so of course we turned to Yelp, which led us to West End Grill. It was a Sunday around 8pm so the bar area was crowded with revelers watching the Cavs vs. GS game, but the diner side had only 1 other table. We sat on the diner side since we wanted a booth. There were still plenty of TVs in that area so we could follow the game too. They have a decent draft list. I think there were about 10-12 options, mostly craft. I had an Elysian pale ale. It was served in a (literally) frozen mug-like ice shaving were still on the mug. I loved how cold it was after the hot day at the beach! The menu has a wide variety of "American" foods, so there should be something for everyone. My fiance and I had the same exact order-broiled crab cake sandwich with seasoned fries. Our meals were ready fairly quickly. The crab cakes are house-made and all meat, no filler! Tartar was on the side but not needed-the meat was flavorful on it's own. The brioche bun was so buttery and nicely grilled! It held up to the crab cake nicely. The seasoned fries were piping hot, crispy, and well-seasoned. Our server was friendly and efficient. We both loved our meals and would absolutely return here in the future. Food was delicious. Casual dining experience right inside the deli. Staff was helpful, friendly and attentive. We had penne pasta with marinara sauce, cheese ravioli with marinara, BLT chopped salad and a chicken parmigiana sandwich. All were great. The sauces were different for each. If you are in the mood for Italian food, we recommend you stop in, however, we also tried their Maryland Crab Soup which was fabulous! So their local menu is worth eating as well. read more

One of the only bars I am aware of that have such an easy-going atmosphere and offer not only gluten free options but have a dedicated fryer. I would rank our overall experience as average. Food was 4 out of 5 stars and the ambience 2 out of 5 stars. We walked in around noon for lunch. The place was empty and dark, with an odor of old milk. Carpet was dirty and several booths have holes in the seats. Not attractive at all. Thankfully the food was better. I got a burger and fries and my wife got a salad. It was good but nothing exceptional. The fries that came with the burger were the stars of the plate however they had a generic ketchup which was just awful. Pay a few cents more and get some Heinz! We popped in for drinks and appetizers but didn't get greeted at our table for 15 minutes. We then finally put in our order and waited another 15 minutes. We decided to change it to carry out and get out of there. Also, there were no COVID protocols in place in terms of spacing out the tables. At least try a bit! West End Grill, on the outside, is a bit underwhelming. I've driven by dozens of times and noted that they have a burger special, but each time I thought "Look at the place. How good could it REALLY be?" It wasn't until the wife decided that she wanted seafood that I saw it has pretty decent reviews on Yelp, so away we went. West End Grill, on the inside, is also a bit underwhelming. There was a smell of stale beer in the air and the hostess stand was empty when we walked in. After waiting around a bit, a man came by and somewhat brusquely asked where we wanted to sit. "Booth," we told him. We sat down at a table with a thumb-sized hole in the wall next to it. Honestly, by this point I wasn't impressed. However, when our server arrived, he couldn't have been more pleasant. He made a couple jokes, recommended a beer (Magic Hat No. 9, if you were wondering, which was $3.50 during happy hour. And yes, it was delicious), and reassured us that we were ordering good dishes. We started off having the Peruvian shrimp with chorizo. It was served on what I believe was a bed of fried cheddar grits and topped with some sort of green sauce. All I know is that it was amazing. The chorizo tasted more of middle eastern spices than Latin, but I'll cut it some slack since it tasted great regardless. The wife ordered a sort of pasta in a pink sauce with chicken and sausage. Now is where I want to point out that we went here because she wanted seafood and she didn't even order any! I guess women DO reserve the right to change their mind at any time. The pasta itself was just okay. She liked it, so that's all that matters, but I feel that it was something I could have made at home. The pasta was probably just store bought. I, on the other hand, ordered the rockfish served on top of a cheddar grit cake and a cream sauce with bacon and lump crab. Two words: holy crap! It was so wonderful. I actually ate beyond my "I'm too full" point. When the server came back, he looked surprised. "I guess you liked it, then," he said. Yes, I did. So much so, that I didn't save room for dessert, which is a shame because they had a seasonal pumpkin dessert that we wanted to try. They can improve on their first impression. They can improve on the slight hole in the wall (literally) feel they have. But the food, and at such a decent price, is more than I had hoped for. I'm looking forward to coming back. I usually don't review places before I try their food, but I had a pretty miserable experience here in about 10 minutes. First, when you walk in the crowd there is very douchebaggy. Everyone looked like a douchebag. A bunch of 21 year olds with goatees and those cotton American Eagle hats. Second, they are blaring douchey alt rock music. Third, when we first walk in four of the douchebags are standing around the host/hostess podium. I was thinking it was odd for a place to have four douchebag hosts. They looked like some weird semi-identical quadruplets. Like there could have been a reality show about them. It turns out they did not work there, they just like to hang out around the host/hostess podium. Fourth, we look around for some type of seat yourself sign or wait to be seated sign and see nothing. We look around a little further for a host or hostess and there doesn't appear to be one or any waitstaff. So after about a two minutes of standing next to the douches by the podium, we decide to seat ourselves. Fifth, we sit down at a table not far from the podium, thinking that if a host/hostess showed up and peeked around the pile of douchebags he or she might see us. We wait for a few more minutes and no one comes to us. We look around and don't see any potential employees other than somebody behind the bar. Sixth, I decide to go to the bar and let them know we exist. Maybe they don't have waitresses and we order at the counter like McDonald's? But my SO wants to give up and go some place else. Seventh, we leave and still do not see any employees walking around. I don't ever remember walking out of place like this before. I am generally patient, but the douchey atmosphere was telling me to go. Maybe some day I will go back and have some food and then change my rating to 2 or 3, but I doubt it. read more

Yelpers...you didn't let me down. We were traveling home from Ocean City and looking for a place for dinner....so glad we stopped here. From the outside it is nothing special and even when we walked it...very bar type place. We had our in-laws and young daughter with us...but we ventured in anyway. We started off with the Marylnd Nachos...a great yummy start. For dinner...bulgogi (my dad served in Korea when I was young so I grew up eating this!) best I have had, besides my mom's. My friend Jeremy is getting married and a group of us spent some time here getting food for part of his bachelor party. I didn't even know this place existed because Griffin's used to be at this location. Needless to say I was thoroughly surprised at how well put together this restaurant/sports bar is. We were able to reserve their banquet room with a huge 60" plasma TV for the Redskins vs. Seahawks football game. It was great. The room was large enough for our party and had some leftover room to mill about and visit friends on the other side of the large tables. As I was walking about the restaurant before our party was set to begin, I noticed they have a lot of plasma TVs situated around the dining area/bar so you won't miss any of the sporting events. Everything about the decor was nicely done. It screamed quality and didn't look like someone rushed the work. The bathrooms are situated nicely between the banquet room, dining area and the bar so you don't look stupid when you're trying to figure out where they are. The atmosphere was great! During the game, you could hear all of the people in the restaurant/bar getting into the game. Our service was fantastic. The hostesses greeted us politely when we walked in and gave us directions to where we were having the party. Even though we had a large party, our waitress remembered everything we asked her for and she brought it out in a timely manner. I was impressed. She didn't even get that confused when switched seats on her and she was continually bringing out our food and drinks. When we asked for split checks at the end of the night, she jumped on the ball and totally took care of our needs. Usually there's something that would knock a restaurant down a star for me and all that's left is the food. Well, the food was up to the challenge and ding!, we have a five-star review. I had the jumbo lump crab cake sandwich. I scarfed it down in about two seconds. It was large, I was hungry, what can I say? The only slight problem is that it seems like they short you out on seasoned fries. I'll overlook this because the rest of the place is awesome. I have been to West End Grill many times prior to today. Each time centered around grabbing a glass of wine with friends or a catching a sports game on tv. The bar crowd has always been great, as West End is a favorite among local Annapolitans (especially those who work in the hospitality industry). Today was a whole different experience! I have heard through the grapevine that the Executive Chef accommodates gluten allergies, which made my ears perk up. Living with celiacs sometimes means eating the same "safe" foods when I dine out...salad with grilled chicken, rice, sashimi, etc. I can attest that my lunch was not only gluten free, but was delectable! I double checked that the ingredients were gluten-free with our server. A few moments later she returned and gave me the green light, explaining that the chef would make some minor adjustments. Boy did he! When my salad came out, it was presented beautifully. The Thai Mishu Salad, was crowned with a crunchy, rice-based cracker and a generous portion of pan seared rockfish. The salad was tossed with sprouts, basil and cilantro in a chili lime dressing. Two thumbs up! My friend ordered the Little River Chicken Salad. Long story short, there was not a morsel left on the plate. I think he liked it :) As a foodie and someone who sometimes seeks out more eclectic dining spots..I have to give kudos to Daniel, the Executive Chef and staff at West End Grill. I was really surprised at the quality of the food and attention to detail. The Chef came out personally to see if we liked our dishes, and even went as far as preparing a polenta cake (yep, gluten free) for me to sample. That's the kind of service I am talking about people! I will be back very soon, as I am eager to try more menu offerings. I see this place has a strong following on Yelp, but I did not have a stellar experience this past weekend. I arrived for dinner around 7 o'clock Saturday and the dining room was empty. Not a good sign for the restaurant. After the desolation, I next noticed how dirty the place was. It seemed that the floors had not been swept in quite some time and the tables were sticky. After looking at the menu, I was disappointed to see that West End only has the traditional gross American adjunct lagers on tap (and one or two others, Leinenkugel and Abita if I recall correctly). The most disconcerting aspect was that my date became ill shortly after we left. She had the angus burger cooked medium well...I'm not sure if the kitchen undercooked the meat or if there was some other problem with the food. Needless to say, I will not be back. read more

Four stars seems a little high but three stars definitely seems too low. I'll start with the bad: this place is gross. I guess they rely on it being night and dark so you don't notice how gross the actual interior is. The booths are very visibly filthy, the place is in serious need of a cleaning and remodeling. I actually didn't want to touch anything. And don't get me started on the disgusting bathroom. All so so nasty and took away from my experience. The good: food was really good and the service was really good. I had French onion soup and a chicken burger and it was all great. My BF had an Angus burger and nachos which was also great. Very friendly place - went here twice while on a short business trip to the area. Best part - great wings selection, and they are actually awesome wings. The Thai are the best as determined by the scientific 2 person, 2 evening test by my colleague and I. Sadly they ran out of the "worlds best burger" the first day that we came in (and that was one of the main reasons I picked the place), and told us on the second day that they are discontinuing it all together. This place was nothing special and the service we had was poor at best. We came during lunch on a Friday and it was empty. I believe we were one of two groups there. In spite of that, it took about 15 minutes just to get the waitress to take our drink order. She was basically absent for the majority of our time there. To be fair, she was friendly and helped when we asked, but getting help was difficult because as I said, she disappeared. I assume this restaurant has chefs and she wasn't stuck preparing our meals as well. The food was good, but not worth the expensive price. Their website would have you believe (as would their menu and the prices next to the items) that this place is classy. It's closer to a bar with lots of booths. Every time I visit my Grandma in Annapolis, I make sure to take her here. We randomly stumbled upon it one day a couple of years ago and its been a tradition ever since. Last time, we started off with the crab dip and it was a hit! It was gone before I could blink an eye. The baguette was so crispy and delicious. The crab dip was so good that my boyfriend and Grandma both couldn't get enough, so they ordered the Chesapeake Chicken sandwiches (which are smothered in crab dip). They weren't very happy with their choices. I got the French Dip and it was really good. The server was friendly and refilled my coffee regularly. We wanted to get dessert, but we were way too stuffed to even try. Overall, a great experience last time just as always. I can't wait to go back because there's so much more on the menu that I'd love to try! read more

Atmosphere: Think "relatively clean bar, with attached restaurant". My husband and I were in town for 1 night, and we wanted "casual with good crab dip / crabcakes"... And I found this place using trusty Yelp. Location: Although it is located at the crossroads of two large thoroughfares, the entrance to the parking lot is a bit tricky. Best way to approach is to be going east on 450, and turn right into the slightly shabby-looking shopping center. (Only "shabby" in comparison to the spankin' new town center action that is directly behind it!) Crab dip appetizer: definitely "crabby" (a good thing), and comes in a hefty portion, served with two fresh-out-of-the-oven small baguettes. My husband and I could only eat less than half, and it left me pissed that we were staying in a hotel, and getting on a cruise the next day... 'Cause otherwise I would have totally taken it home! Crabcake: VERY "crabby", essentially no filler, excellent and tasty! I had it as an add-on to the bruschetta salad, which itself was HUGE (albeit because of lots of lettuce, but had the appropriate amount of "good stuff" too, to make a good "good stuff to lettuce" ratio). Service: friendly & fast. We were seated in the bar area, likely because they didn't have enough staff to cover the restaurant portion as well (it was sorta roped off / closed-looking... It was a random Thursday night). Summary: - crab dip = 5 stars - crab cake = 5 stars - overall experience = 4.5 stars, though I can't put my finger on why I feel it needs a 0.5 star deduction So stop reading this... Came here for a quick dinner after shopping in Annapolis. The happy hour drink and apps special were great! But the entrees were lacking. Both sandwiches were pretty bland and the greens on my avocado club were wilted. Service was okay - not very fast - we waited a really long time to get our check and I had an empty drink for awhile. This is definitely a sports bar but the food is much better than typical sports bar fair. Went on a Friday night with a friend who is fond of the place. It's kind of half sports bar half restaurant with cozy booths and tables. You would only know its a sports bar because of the noise level and TVs everywhere. There was a Caps game on, hence the noise. However sat in a comfy booth and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We started off with the hoe cakes which are stuffed cornmeal pancakes. I don't know about "stuffed to the gills" but definitely tasty. The lemon butter drizzle is delicious and a little heavier pour would only be a plus. The shrimp and grits are fantastic! Nice size shrimp that are perfectly grilled. The white wine and butter sauce that is poured over the grits is so good I was looking for a spoon to slurp it up! The margarita haddock was equally as good although the fish was a tad bit dry. But a bite with the sliced tomato and balsamic vinaigrette were the perfect complement. The parmesan risotto was perfectly cooked. Subtle parm flavor and just the right amount of bite. So good! Definitely a great spot for upscale type food in a casual environment. West End Grill has never failed me! I usually go with a group of friends after work. The food is awesome and so is the service. The restaurant is open considerably later than any other bar and grill in the Annapolis area, which is great! I would recommend trying the Honey Old Bay wings, West End tots and the fried mozzarella. The Fried Oreos are to die for! Everything tastes homemade, far from the frozen food you may get at other establishments. Only quibble: we ordered one sandwich without cheese, and discovered when we got back to our hotel with our order that the cheese WAS on the sandwich. Too much effort to suit up and drive back to the restaurant. Word to the wise - check a to-go order before leaving! Noise level = very high. The diner side is a bit depressing looking, IMO, but the bar area is well equipped with TVs and painted a soothing grey and white. Being there for quite some time, we tried a good variety of food. Thanks to being a 4 top, there were 4 types of wings tried: -The Otis are no joke spicy but don't have much of a buffalo flavor. Get some milk to wash it down -Thai wings are more sweet than spicy, too sweet IMO but husband loved them -Buffalo wings have a good kick and I think husband would have ordered these over Otis had we known -Old Bay wings were good - we had them grilled which is a great option The cream of crab soup had a pleasing amount of crab in it, especially given the horrendous soup I've had at Phillips down by the water. I ordered the Thai salad which was a large enough portion to fill me and get picked at by the rest of the table. The flavor combination of the vegetables is great, but I would have preferred a plain grilled chicken to the chicken in the same thai sauce as the wings which ended up competing with the salad dressing. The 'MD fries' which are potato chips with crab dip were an extremely satisfying and filling bar snack as well. Bottom line: your basic bar with reasonable basic bar food. It's perfectly OK, but go more for the drinks than the food. We've tried a number of dishes at the West End, and most of them are about what you'd expect of bar food - OK, but not destination eating. On a recent visit, the fish tacos were a little bland, and the tortilla a little old, but perfectly serviceable. The meatball parmigiana hoagie was pretty good, the cheese melted just right. Salads were very basic - lettuce with Parmesan cheese and some croutons, nothing memorable. The wings were OK (there's an "OK" theme going here), not bad, but you won't remember them the next day either. If you live in or are passing through the area, there's nothing at all wrong with the West End Grill. If you're expecting a bar with serviceable bar food, that's exactly what you'll get. read more

It's rare I seek out Yelp to review a business unless they've really upset me, but I just had to rave about this place, their service, and their food (at the suggestion of my honey, even... which he doesn't do!) In the past we've only stopped in here for drinks, but I'm so glad we decided to try out their food. Our server, I believe maybe her name was Sandra (but that's likely wrong, it has been a few days) was absolutely awesome. The sweetest, most accommodating, and genuine gal.... We just adored her! For appetizer, we ordered the crab dip, and I can't begin to tell you how yummy it was. Extra crab in the dip, delicious bread... best dip I've had in a very long time, hands down! He also ordered the Annapolis Rose soup, which I did not think I would like it, but I couldn't believe how good it also was! For entrée, I ordered the Salmon Simple (our server's hubby's favorite) with parm risotto and grilled asparagus. While the asparagus was nothing to write home (or yelp about) the rest, O-M-G, was soo amazing. Seriously, so, so good and cooked to perfection. My beau ordered the Turkey Reuben and enjoyed it, and even his French fries were delish. I love this place for drinks, food, and catching up with friends. Service is always great, from bartenders Otis, Brian, or Billy. I typically go later after the dinner rush which is great because I can always get a seat at the bar or at one of the high tops. The kitchen stays open late, which is a bonus. Different nights have different vibes, with weekdays being pretty quiet with just sports on the tv and background music. Weekends are definitely busier and more raucous. In Annapolis area on business and found West End Grill on yelp. Decent reviews so I decided to check it out. Bar scene is really the only ambiance, as dining area was slow/quiet. Lots of TV's. Service was friendly, but slow. Took a while to order between course and waited for drinks. That said; again, staff was friendly. Extensive menu, with specials that were less than desired. Grilled cheese or philly steak with salmon, shrimp and grits on the menu too? Seems like there's a little identity crisis going on with trying to be everything to everyone. Had a nice wings list, though I didn't order any. Had the crab dip which was good and the Cobb Salad, which was a nice size entree salad. All in all, a solid 3 star. read more

One of the best sports bars in Annapolis. Great place to both catch a game or grab dinner (or both!)....Bartenders are friendly and TV maintenance is unbeatable.....there is never a time when sports are not on the TV.... The food is above par for a sports bar--favorites include the French Onion Soup, Chicken Chesapeake, Turkey Ruben, and Franco-Irish Dip. The wings are also tasty.
