We were excited to try this restaurant on our vacation to Colorado. My wife and I were extremely disappointed that her Fried Chicken Sandwich (Sticky Bird Style) was very dry but edible. My Smoked Prime Brisket Sandwich was so salty that I couldn't eat it. I thought it might be something else on the sandwich but after deconstructing it the brisket was the culprit. The waitress apologized but didn't offer to amend the bill in any way. Very disappointed for something we were so looking forward to read more

Another good meal at West End Tavern. This time, I took my son and some college friends here for lunch. It was 2:30pm, so the restaurant was pretty empty. We sat inside upstairs, which is a nice, open bar area with tall tables. I ordered the Green Chile Bison Burger. The name is a little misleading. Normally, when a menu says green chile, they mean New Mexican green chile In this case, the burger is topped with roasted poblano chilies. They're tasty; just not the same and no heat. Bison is pretty lean so I ordered it cooked medium rare. It was still a little on the dry side but still very good. The fries are good, standard fare. The other guys got the St. Louis style pork rib special, the Double Double double bacon cheeseburger, and the BBQ Pork sandwich. All the portions are large, which made 3 college guys happy. They all liked their food. The server was very friendly and attentive. The food came out quickly and warm. All was good with our lunch. Sure to return again! read more

I was here for the Oskar Blues satellite tap room event. We had a great time. Sampled some awesome beers and apps. The hot wings here are excellent! I would be very tempted to try their Wing Challenge. I also, sampled the yam chips with guacamole. They weren't bad, and I think both were excellent on their own, but something about the combo was off to me. Everyone else at the table loved them. I can't wait to come back to sample some of their bourbons. While here, I was able to sample a 17 year old Pappy Van Winkle, that West End had been aging themselves in a barrel. Knowing the rarity and demand for Pappy, I cannot imagine what this place did to secure an entire barrel of Pappy, but they must be doing something right. Went here today for lunch. Absolutely everything but the coleslaw was over cooked. The burnt ends were awful, chicken tough, ribs were like jerky, hot link was too done and watching my son yank at the brisket in the sandwich was comical. The waitress didn't refill drinks one time either. We had an absolute full plate of burnt ends left and she didn't once ask if they weren't to our liking. My son and I paid $80 for lunch and won't be back. This IS NOT a BBQ place! It's a place to drink that has stuff cooked on a BBQ. Along a cute street lined with shops and restaurants, we found the West End Tavern...or Vince D. directed us there! I hear that before the building behind it was built, it had one of the best views in town - it still has a pretty spectacular view of the mountains...just a tiny bit obstructed. It took a little bit of a time to get seated because we wanted an outdoor table for a large group, so we pulled a few tables together upstairs and inside the restaurant. I'm not sure if there was some confusion about whether we wanted some drinks (yes, we did!), but in the ~20 minutes or so that we waited, nobody came by for drink orders. Boo. :( But once we were seated at our real table and had a real server, the service was quick, friendly and attentive. There was a wide selection of menu items which were more heavily weighted towards healthy fare; I'm not a healthy eater but I definitely should be. I got the shrimp and avocado tostadas which were good - lots of fresh vegetables, shrimp and avocado layered between three tostadas. Great place for a casual meal - good food, good prices and a great place for outdoor seating. Was helping my son get settled at CU and we stopped in for lunch. Had tables set up outside because of the virus but they had umbrellas so you could get some shade. Food and service were both quite good. The lobster roll, I assume they are affiliated with the fish joint next store, was one of the best I have had and I live in the northeast. Burnt ends were also very tasty as was my son's grilled fish sandwich. Was first time I was there but I will definitely go back next time I am in town. Good spot. read more

I so rarely get to Boulder, especially the Pearl Street Mall area, so I randomly picked this restaurant to meet a colleague for lunch. When I walked in, West End felt like my kind of place, warm and unpretentious. We sat in the outdoor, rooftop seating area which was pleasant. The service was cheerful and attentive enough, but I was underwhelmed by the food. I ordered the smoked pork sandwich. Thin slices of smoked pork was served on dry (!), thick white bread with a small side of BBQ sauce. I tried to dunk the sandwich in the sauce, but everything sort of fell apart. The BBQ sauce just seemed like it was Kraft. Yam chips were crispy but had very little flavor. My companion's burger looked good - but average. Meh. read more

Unfortunately, the fish and chips were not a great choice. Fish was excessively breaded and well done. Chips were not a smart take out option as they were soggy. Stopped here for lunch on the way to move my son in at CU. They had plenty of seating and weren't busy, we got a cute table in the upstairs table. They also have moved seating on to Pearl St. bc of social distancing. I ordered the burnt ends and wedge salad, it was all very delicious. The bbq sauce with the burnt ends was YUMMY! I have been to this place a number of times and always thought the food was good but the last time i was there was really terrible. I dont usually order the special - but they had a "burtn ends sloppy joe" and i love the burnt ends so ordered it, actually two people in my group did. We were both disgusted. It was literally ground up black gruel on a bun....no discernable burnt ends or even burnt end flavor. It seemed like someone had a clever marketing idea on how to use up leftovers at the expense of customers but this was so bad- looked like post garbage disposal leftovers. Just wanted to warn someone else in case this is still on the menu. Prior to this I always thought this place was really good but this experience has completely changed my mind. So bad. read more

We decided to come here after a hike in boulder. It was absolutely amazing. We had friends in town and they wanted a roof top patio to sit and enjoy the wonderful Colorado weather. It was a beautiful day and weather was a bit warm. The staff was welcoming and friendly. We were seated right away. They explained the menus and took our drink order immediately. I ordered lemonade and vodka and she explained they had many different flavors. Yum check them out! They also have lots of cocktails and beers too. We ordered some appetizers- let me just start by saying one of the best wings I have ever had. I always order my wings plain but the other people that we are with like them traditional. They ordered other ones and they were phenomenal, Amazing, outstanding, out of this world. We also ordered some smashed potatoes. These were also so good. I ordered pulled pork, House cut fries and slaw and it was so good other people had salads and chicken and waffles and a sampler plate which were also so good. Yummy, succulent BBQ! I'm from Louisiana, and this restaurant was by far the highlight of the trip. My only complaint is that the inside was a bit steamy, and there were a few flies buzzing around but it was worth it. First off, the burnt ends are a MUST eat! They are super tender and juicy. First time up in Boulder and after watching man vs. Food i had to come here as i love me some chicken wings! I was bummed that you are now only able to do the challenge a few times a year however no big - got a normal order that was amazing. Girlfriend got the goat cheese dip and a bloody Mary, probably the best i have ever had. I chose a beer off the rare list for 26bucks. I think thats high, but you cant find some on the list - the gamble did pay off as it was awesome too. We sat upstairs where the heat was on, staff was on par bringing hot food and making sure cups were full. Nice clean place that smells of yummy BBQ smoke. Awful food. Came here for lunch with a group and omg their fries were terrible. They were chewy, dry, as if they reheated the yesterday's fries, or dumped them right out of freezer. See for yourself in a pic below. The burger I ordered was just as bad and the rest of the people (3 total) all agreed that the food was so bad. Um. HEY BOURBON FANS THIS PLACE HAS PAPPY VAN WINKLE Yes, that required a major all caps. I literally haven't ever seen this on a menu before, nevermind in stock, despite all the publicity the drink gets. Why? It's incredibly rare. Experiencing it? Delicious, and in multiple vintages. Sigh. On the more Yelpy note, the restaurant is nice, hipster, decent view, and by the way Boulder is quite nice and crisp for my Los Angeles friends. The air tastes distinctly non-smoggy - I love it. But again, back to the restaurant. Fish and chips are in. I love french fries. Burnt ends were not - they were pretty dry. Mac n cheese was decent. Overall I was satisfied with the meal, and wouldn't mind coming back again due to the outdoor patio seating arrangement and all. But oh, the Pappy - some of my friends will demand a visit. read more

I went here based on great reviews. I ordered a beef brisket sandwich. When you're from a beef ranching family, you naturally want to see your family's legacy prepared different ways! Unfortunately, the brisket was about half fat. That's not even close to quality meat. I pulled the fat away into a not-so-small pile on my plate and ate what was left. The sandwich - sans fat - tasted okay. When I commented about the poor meat quality to our server, not a bad server, he informed me that's how "quality" brisket is. I informed him my family is a large ranching family in Montana - and that he was more than wrong - and misleading other customers I heard ask him if the brisket was lean. He sheepishly backed off his previous statements and said that what he was told. The brisket we were served I wouldn't feed my dog. It really was that bad. Everything else was okay. I wanted to love this place, but it seems they are riding on their reputation in a visitor Mecca and not so much about quality fare. I cannot recommend their brisket. The cornbread appetizer was out of this world and the honey butter that accompanies it is a nice touch. Healthy portions too. I tried the Avery barrel aged bourbon Pump[KY]n and at 17.22% ABV it was a welcome change of pace. Surprisingly smooth and fresh. Food was good enough, drinks awesome, and had a nice young man as our server who was personable and hospitable!!

Unfortunately our whole experience here was disappointing. It took forever for our drinks to come, even though we could see them sitting ready to go at the bar. When someone finally brought them they explained they had to go get more lemonade to finish the drink. During the meal, there were 4 servers chatting at the bar and not once did any of them look up to see if we needed anything. We had to interrupt their conversation to order a second beer, it felt like they were annoyed by this request. After ordering the beer, the bartender filled the glass, and then let it sit on the bar and disappeared. When a server eventually came to our table, we told her to cancel the second beer since it was taking forever even though it was sitting on the bar. Eventually the bartender returned and said he had to switch the kegs. A little communication upfront would have made this a much more pleasant experience. To top it off, food was terrible too- dry meat with no flavor. Way over-priced as well. read more

Stopped in for lunch on my last day in Boulder. Really enjoyed my meal. I was by myself and sat on the roof top and didn't realize what a great view of the mountains you'd have. That was a bonus in my book. As for the service, Emily was really great. The food was pretty good as well. I had the pork shoulder BBQ and I thought it was pretty good. Maybe not as good as the BBQ I used to get when I lived in TN and GA but not bad. The fries were pretty good as well. I didn't have any drinks but the selection of bourbons was pretty good and I would have loved to have tried one of the flights they offered. SUCH GREAT BBQ! We were visiting Boulder and wanted a fun place to go with great food. I am a lover of BBQ especially pulled pork and brisket, so of course I had to get the brisket sandwich. On sourdough bread the brisket was perfectly cooked with pickles and the right amount of mayo. We added a little extra barbecue sauce and ranch and it was out of this world. Food was the big winner here. It's primarily a BBQ place, which is not obvious from the name. Busy location with a wait so I recommend a reservation. They DO have outdoor seating, which was nice, and it's right near all of the Boulder action. The cocktails were very tasty and creative.
