These guys are crooks. I have a snake that I regularly buy lamps and mice for here. In the two years I've been here, I never had an issue. Now with the new owners, the quality of product and customer service is in the toilet. Someone picked up a mouse for me and accidentally told them a rat. I immediately brought it back to them with the receipt and they refused to exchange it for a mouse. They made me purchase another one and then refused to take the rat back. What am I supposed to do with this rat? I've also purchased two lamps from them recently and had a very similar experience. They test it before you leave to make sure it works bc there's no return on lights. It works when they test it and in both cases, the light burnt out in less than a week. They're clearly using the lamps for other things (chickens and other reptiles) and putting those bulbs back in the boxes then pulling this no return BS. Don't trust these people, go to literally anywhere else unless you like wasting your time and money read more

Went in looking for parts for a proprietary kennel system they sell one phone call didn't work one trip down with the part that I needed 12 more of three laps around what the part was at the counter I walked out to the back took a picture of the merchandise in stock that I was after employees still had no knowledge of what the parts were understandable contact Manager for assistance and knowledge on merchandise manager was incredibly rude didn't wanna help and when I was instructed that he had to order them and they were coming from Texas and he could order them maybe sometime next week I realize that I am capable of ordering them so I suggested I should order them I got called a few four letter names think them for their service the manager and owner followed me out and attempted to assault me in my vehicle. I went in for straw for insulation to make cat shelters, this guy told me no need for that straw, and told me he had something better after listening to my project, turns out the recommended mini flake shavings is not at all better, but toxic for the cats and not at all what i need. I now cant return it and am left with a very bad taste, i feel bait and switched, not helped, and stuck with a bale i dont even want. Service wasn't friendly at all. Came in here asking for grit for my chicks - the lady responded super condescending "You know chicks don't need grit right?" - I said that's funny because when we bought them from you guys, we were told they WOULD need grit. A quick Google search also says grit is a fine option. She looked perplexed by this. Either way, it was bold of her to assume I only had chicks - we have seven other adult hens that we supply grit to as well. Maybe the bird flu/egg craze has made these employees irritated of the general public purchasing chicks - I get it. But instead of being condescending and acting like you are a gatekeeper to all poultry care information, how about you use that chance to educate people and be glad people are coming to YOUR store to make their purchases cause it looked dead as hell in there. Be happy that people are trying to LEARN about caring for animals and choosing your store to support this. If I were this employee, I would have been more encouraging and welcoming. Support small businesses my a** when you have some rude employees that don't represent the store well. Clearly I'm not the only customer with this kind of experience. read more

Do not buy chicks here! I've had chickens for years and bought chicks from them before. They have raised the prices by almost triple! $9.99 for a chick. I bought 4 and just a couple hours later one was dead. I called and no discounts or help offered at all the replace the chick. I won't buy them from them again. There are lots of places cheaper. I know you always run the risk of them dying but a couple hours! Come on! At least I'm not the lady in the comments here who had 10 die! read more

What I like most about Western Ranch is the young people working there. They're always so friendly and knowledgeable. They really know the animals and care for them. The girls at the front know the kittens up for adoption very well. A young man recommended a particular rat when I was looking to purchase one as a pet. See a picture of Sniffy below! This rat really had a very sweet disposition. I didn't expect that young man to be so familiar with the animals when the many rats are likely destined to be snake food. I also had good luck finding medicine for kennel cough relief when Petco and Petsmart were out of stock. I didn't have as much luck looking for any outdoor dog kennels. They had a pretty limited selection due to external events. But the staff was very helpful. In terms of animals I've seen kittens, rats, mice, and chicks available. But it's not like 20 years ago when they had rabbits, budgies, and other small pets. I've heard from other dog owners they have events like photos with Santa and I've seen a long line for the mobile vet events. During the wildfires a year ago Western Ranch hosted a donation event. It may be a bit more expensive but it feels good to know I'm supporting a locally owned store that cares about its community. read more

This place is the worst. I bought Dubai roaches. I got home and most were dead. Called the store and she said to exchange them I would have to go back right away. I immediately drive back over and she would not exchange them. She said they have to confirm they are alive before selling them but she didn't ring me up. This is the only place within 30 miles i can get live food for my reptiles and always have stock. So far they are the cheapest rate i have been able to find. I like that i can just go in unbothered and get what i need. No one tries to hover over me unless I specifically ask for help and when i do they have always done so with a friendly attitude. I noticed it is a younger crew maybe my age or lower and thats probably why its so pleasant to shop there . If you are in need of hay, I do not recommend coming here. They sold me 3 moldy bales @ $33 each and would not exchange for good ones. I went to Western Ranch & Pet Supply on Thursday, March 16th at 6:00PM to purchase 3 bales of grass and 1 bale of alfalfa. The bales were kept in my pickup truck which has a camper shell on. The following morning, I went to open the first bale of grass and found some mold in the corners but it was not too bad, maybe 15% loss to mold. I used this bale up until Saturday night. On Sunday morning, I went to use a second bale of grass and found the entire bale to be full of mold. Loss on this bale was 100%. I went to check the remaining bales and the alfalfa was good, but the last grass bale also contained mold with probably 50% loss. I immediately contacted Western Ranch (3 days after purchase), explaining the condition of the bales and requested to exchange the 2 unused grass bales. I was told that they did not take returns on hay unless and it was on the day of purchase. I live in American Canyon so making the drive to Vacaville is 30 minutes each way. I proceeded to explain that the individual who loaded my truck gave me moldy bales which should not have been sold to customers in the first place but they rudely refused to exchange and hung up on me. In terms of weather, there was ZERO precipitation from the time of purchase until this morning (Sunday). The bales I was given were completely moldy Anyone who feeds hay knows it takes time for an ENTIRE bale to become moldy. I will personally never shop here again. The fact that they are okay passing the bill of bad inventory onto customers is wrong. I would highly suggest going to George's Feed or making the drive to Higby's. read more

Mill Moth Infestation! So I've been shopping here for years (since early 90's) and still will continue to. But!! you need to check any dry pet food you buy there. As of late... I've taken back our 3rd bag of dry dog food as it's "Infested with Mill Moths". They won't hurt or do any harm to your pet... but it nice you get those in your own pantry of dry goods they are very difficult to get rid of. Compassionate, caring, helpful and pretty knowledgeable. New to the chicken world and the new babies are also the children's pets, I am thankful for the caring, helpful way they treated our family. We had a baby chick in trouble and I can't say enough about how nice they treated us and the chick. They have our vote Today we came back to check on the chick (star). She was doing really good so they sold her to a lady that buys and helps a lot of their injured birds. My daughter really wanted her back (star). So they offered to let the new owner know. We are very great full for the help and care, and really happy Star is improving. We are hopeful that the new owner will work with us. I went to this place and a employee put the stuff I purchased in the trunk of my car and slammed the trunk so hard it messed something on it when I called they gave me a run around because I wanted the owner. It was Like Ididn't matter. I called about 3 times and they said about 100 times. I called and they keep hanging up on me. They said the owner would call me back and never did. I love to support my local businesses and have been a frequent customer of Western Feed for all my premium dog and cat foods. I don't mind spending a little extra knowing it supports my community. That being said, I was surprised to learn the store policy about wearing face masks. Last time I went in to buy my dog food I noticed none of the employees were wearing face coverings. I ask why that was and was told they are a private store and their manager told them they didn't have to. I was not expecting that. I feel as a community with a pandemic all around us that it is up to each of us to protect others especially the vulnerable. We don't know who is carrying this virus and of course we are all tired of being stuck in our homes. If wearing a mask gives us some level of protection and comfort why would a store manager ignore that? I realize not everyone feels that way but I'm sure there are many that do and that is why I decided to post this. I've been a frequent customer for years, (probably twice a month)but today was extremely disappointing. We sent our daughter with her grandparents to pick up some baby chicks. When they arrived home we noticed one of the chicks had pasty butt. Poop was caked thickly all over it's vent and back feathers. These chicks were put in the box by an employee who apparently didn't care to look for problems. We immediately went to return it and were informed of the no return on live animal policy. Fine, if that's your policy then train your employees to at least give a cursory check of what they are sending home. The obvious issue could have easily been spotted and a different chick offered. The manager did ask the other employee to check the rest of the chicks for pasty butt, so hopefully no one else will have a similar issue today. read more

We accidentally stopped here during a road trip to Burneys waterfall, as we needed a dog prescribed food for our puppy.. It was an amazing and cheerful place.. super friendly staff..! I've tried to adopt cats from this place three times now. Each time I'm denied for untrue reasons or no reason. First time and second time was no explanation as to why and the third time they said that my apartment complex said they don't allow cats which is untrue. Not only that but they're very rude about it and have entitled attitudes when I ask more questions about the qualifications they look for in a pet owner so I can understand why my applications aren't being considered. I do not have a cat or dog. I have a bunny and this is where I got my bunny from. Please keep in mind that this review is based on the customer service I received. We were immediately greeted upon arriving. The lady was very helpful in terms of what we needed for our bunny. Also very helpful! She even helped us to our car in the pouring rain! In general the prices were cheaper than our local Petco - trust me we checked. Furthermore, after we got home we noticed that they gave us the wrong kind of bedding. One that is actually harmful for bunnies. We called up the store and they said they would gladly give us a refund even though we had opened the package. Excellent! I did check out a few of their dog items since my friend has a dog. They have a good selection of accessories like toys and grooming stuff.
