What we ordered: The MacArthur Park (Pastrami, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, rye) $19 I love going to different Jewish Delis. Eating at a Jewish Deli is comfort food for me. I really like a good Pastrami sandwich, but it's not something I can do everyday with how expensive a Pastrami sandwich costs. The cost of a pastrami sandwich is more expensive here than at The Hat, but cheaper than Langer's. I asked the staff about how long the pastrami is cooked. I was told that it cooks for 1 day and it is smoked for 8 hours. The Pastrami is always hand sliced. Hand slicing makes all the difference in the world. Wexler's is known for curing, smoking and steaming the pastrami in house which is a rarity nowadays. This kind of quality is unparalleled. Wexler's rye bread if made with half rye flour and half bread flavor which brings out a stronger rye flavor. The service was very good and very attentive. I mentioned to the server that I would share the sandwich with my wife and son. Upon receiving the sandwich, I realized they separate the sandwich on separate plates with our own portions of potato salad and pickles. This really warmed my heart. They went out of their way to accommodate me without even asking for it. That was awesome! Nowadays, it is so rare to experience the unexpected and this really impressed me. I would definitely come back to Wexler's as the portion size for the price is pretty good for a premium Pastrami sandwich. The taste of pastrami is very good. I'd like to go to the OG Wexler location in the Grand Central Market to compare the quality. Incredible experience. The wexler's in LA closed and i was super bummed. I took a day off from work to go for a cruise and eat at the Santa Monica one. I live about 40 miles away. It was worth the drive. I had an excellent experience with great food and great service. I always get The O.G with a Coke. I could not be any happier with this place. I've bagels passionately, so I had to try this place. One of the coolest things that they have a large variety of the bagels and dishes they serve on it. Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? I ordered a pastrami on rye to go. Got home and discovered they'd given me corned beef, not pastrami. To make matters worse, the corned beef was... well... it wasn't flavorless... it had a vague hint of corned beef flavor, like a memory of corned beef reaching out through an ocean of disappointment. The coleslaw that came with the sandwich was also disappointing. The pickles were acceptable, but on the lower end of acceptable. With tax and tip I spent over $20 for a sandwich I didn't want that didn't taste like much of anything. And after I finished it, I was still hungry. If you want to spend over $20 for a bland, ungenerous portion of something that wasn't the sandwich you ordered, then Wexler's might very well be the place for you. Or maybe you could just be content with that old borscht belt joke: Two old people are talking at a restaurant. The first says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." So I had an off the menu item called The KGB. Not sure what the acronym means but for me, this was the best bagel I ever had! The bagel was smothered with so much deliciousness that it almost blew my mind! So what's a KGB? An open face everything bagel with a light cream cheese shmear. One half is loaded with smoked sturgeon and the other half with smoked salmon, topped with red onion and caviar served with a side of Wexler's signature potato salad. We had a really off putting experience here. We ordered two toasted bagels, one with butter the other with cream cheese. The place didn't seem busy as there were less than 5 customers present. But it took about 20 minutes to get two bagels?! At one point, we both noticed a couple of bagels sitting in brown bags by their kitchen. The gentleman running the place grabs these bagels, sets them down on the counter, walks away to do some arbitrary work, returns to the bagels on the counter, puts them in a to go bag, then walks towards us with the bag, but stops to chat with an employee for a minute and then proceeds to hand us the bagels. Now cold and soggy. Not really sure why our food sat there for so long, nor why there is no sense of urgency in getting food out to your customers. I totally understand people have bad or off days, but this is pretty basic when it comes to working in food. Good news is that there are plenty of other options in the neighborhood for bagels and such. read more

Well, not CLOSED closed because there were 2 dudes talking in there but their doors were locked and a little old lady was peering in when we pulled up. (Sorry, Langers still #1) But if you can't get that far East -- come here. 17 bucks (as of Sept. 2021) gets you a pastrami on fresh rye with a side of pickles and slaw. Wish the cole slaw was better -- next time I'll try the potato salad. Fairly small restaurant so many people were picking up "to go" orders. The sandwich was a bit small, and it wasn't very flavorful compared to other places I've had in the past. I actually had to cover most of my sandwich with mustard to try to enjoy it more. I almost never take to Yelp to complain about a restaurant. In fact, I used to be a server at a pretty nice place, and found most of the behavior on here to be troll-level complaining. This, however, is a special circumstance. It's Saturday morning and I'm sitting in Wexler's right now, here in Santa Monica. It has been by far the worst experience I've ever had for... well, I guess just "an attempt" at breakfast. First of all, they no longer sell what I initially ordered. So, OK, fine. I'll just take a cup of coffee and maybe some rye toast. I sit down at the counter, which is filthy. It's 9 AM. They just opened. That means it's been filthy all night. So, great job there. Next, how is it that you don't have coffee made before you open? It's Saturday morning. You have a line of people. You would think that would be Restaurant 101 stuff. Actually? It is a Restaurant 101 stuff. The rye finally arrives along with the coffee. The coffee is metallic tasting. Undrinkable. The rye is barely toasted. No actual signs of it being toasted. It's essentially just hard Ryebread. It comes with no butter or jam. She asks, "You want butter?" (Obviously, this is all said without a trace of a smile. And, again, this is basic restaurant service.) Of course I want butter -- ANYTHING for the dry, lukewarm rye in front of me. I was starting to think it was rhetorical because there was no rush to get it to me. Three minutes later, she sat down three ice cold butter packs. This rye ain't warm enough to spread room temperature butter let alone ice cold. I leave without finishing any of it. I'm just out six bucks. Oh, and a 25% tip because that's what I always give service. Or more. It's very clear that the staff is pissed off and don't want to be there. Which is a disappointment because I've been to the other Wexler's locations and they've been great. They need to get rid of the current Santa Monica staff and get a new one (at least in the morning) because they couldn't care less about the customer or what they're offering. read more

Pastrami was super tender, potato salad was ok, salad with green goddess dressing was fresh and crisp, pickles were good and had a little spice, and the everything bagel with avocado was tasty. Service was great and restaurant is nice and clean. I do agree with some of the other post that it is a bit expensive. We spent about $85 for 2 full pastrami sandwiches, the half a sandwich and salad, the avocado bagel, and 3 drinks. But the sandwiches were tasty and delis are usually kind of expensive so it is what it is. I'd eat here again and recommend giving it a try. read more

This place wins the award for the most soulless Jewish style deli in the US. They have diner mugs on display but don't think they'll actually use any to serve you coffee, their coffee which is acrid and acidic (maybe descale your coffee machine sometimes?). The everything bagel was pretty bland, they charge you extra for fixings like cucumber and tomato and capers. I think the biggest offense was the whitefish salad... it tasted like there was no fish. How is that possible? This place works if you're lazy or hungover af and you're too lazy to get to Fromins or Bagel Nosh on Wilshire. And if you thought the downtown Grand Market location was bad, keep your eyes peeled, you're in for a ride that will stultify your senses and unburden you from your hard earned cash! This is BY FAR the worst deli/Jew food in all of the Los Angeles area. Put a fork in it, and save yourself the trouble and just skip it! I ordered 'The Macarthur Park' sandwich. And in case you don't understand what they mean, Wexler's is trying to make a connection to an incredibly famous sandwich from one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles. And yes, it's in a trashy area, but it's glorious -- the meat from the heavens. But here, the only thing 'Macarthur Park' in their sandwich is it's something much of the scraps a hobo forages from in the trash and reconstructs. The bread was soggy. The meat was way, way too lean. In fact, I thought it was corned beef at first, not pastrami. The portion was super-super small -- especially for a $20 sandwich. To be honest, I would have had a better sandwich at 7-11 and for a quarter of the price. The potato salad had this gnarly 'earth' taste. Like instead of dill they used rosemary/sage/thyme in it? I've been ordering out for #takeouttuesdays during the safer-at-home order. In the week preceding, I was able to check Langer's and their #19 sandwich off my LA bucket list. For this week, I figured I might as well try Wexler's deli sandwiches. A friend of mine loves this place, but I always resisted because when given so many options, sandwiches just never seemed very exciting to me. I called in my order for curbside pickup and they took my payment over the phone. They gave me clear instructions on where to pull up my car. 30 minutes later, I arrived, they saw me pull-up, asked for my name, then brought out my food. Easy peasy. I ordered the Macarthur Park, essentially an homage to Langer's #19 with cole slaw, swiss, Russian dressing, pastrami on rye. The sandwich was a decent size. I love the thick cuts of pastrami, rather than thin slices. They were so juicy, tender, and flavorful. For the price point (and in comparison to Langer's especially), a very good value. You can even choose potato salad or cole slaw as a side. I chose the potato salad. I am not kidding when I say that I was legitimately shocked by how good the potato salad was. By far, the BEST potato salad I've ever eaten, and I don't even like mayo-based salads that much. This was so good, I would consider going back just for that. For dessert, I ordered a chocolate babka, which was okay, but I would suggest skipping it. read more

Servings for both the MacArthur Park and the bagel and lox were fresser sized. Fresser is Yiddish for big eater. Actually, Fresser is Yiddish for BIG eater. BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG eater. There was just a whole lot of food there which suited us just fine. Particularly when the pastrami and the lox were both outstanding. * * * Two downsides. a) They are not serving indoors ... but we did not know that till we got there. We ate standing on our feet on the sidewalk outside. Fortunately, they had a counter out there to put our stuff on. b) The coffee is undrinkable. Found this small deli next to our airbnb. They had Lox, which my husband loves so we decided to try it out. I ordered a veggie sandwich and added pastrami bacon. We were both presently surprised with how good the food was. Here is the reason for tge 4 stars. I got sticker shock on how much our food was. For both our beagle sandwiches and 2 ojs, it was $50. [Review #466] 2019 Yelp 100 Challenge (122/100) OTM Club 10/20/10-10/26/19 It's quite the trek to pick-up this week's OTM Club curated KGB at Wexler's Deli in Santa Monica. This deli is known for their smoked fish so I just had to redeem this for my Swedish älskling. In addition to the KGB (everything bagel, light cream cheese, smoked sturgeon & red onion, smoked salmon & red onion with potato salad) that ran out of caviar (& on the 1st day! :-O), I also ordered Crinkle Cut Fries for the LO. There was only 1 customer ahead of us & it took awhile to get our fries, the only thing that requires cooking. (sigh) I was hoping to enjoy my meal at the deli, but was on a time crunch because I used metered parking & was out of coins. I barely made it & the meter had already run out of time. The KGB was awesome; the delicate fishes are smoked in-house over applewood, & they're delish! I only wished it came as described with caviar, so I'm disappointed, especially since it's the 1st day for the OTM Club redemption. =( The fries were ok, like your typical fast food frozen fries. Friendly service albeit slow, considering the time of day. Prices may have you balking until you had one of their bagels with smoked fish. Open & brightly lit dining space with a clean unisex restroom in the back. Plenty of metered spaces if you could find one, but there were enough on a Sunday afternoon.
