I have to say that this really isn't the type of place you might think it is. It is a small bar that serves good food and local beers too, and it's a kind of a dive as well. I'm not trying to be insulting here, just making the situation and the business clear. So with this said, I had a great portion of fish with my fish and chips which was only an amazing $9.00. It was fresh and so damn tasty. I paired it with an awesome 6A beer that was brewed a half mile from here and was so remarkable I wish I had a whole evening to consume a half dozen more. What a beautiful night, perfect to eat outside The Whaleback. They were out of tacos, so we ordered fish and chips. Placed the order inside at the bar and the waitress brought out to us. Nice shaded area on the side of the restaurant with clean picnic tables with umbrellas. Food was hot and delish. Portion was BIG, fries crispy and fresh homemade tartar sauces. Enjoyable. A cheap gem of cape cod. Good local spot for cheap beer and a few $3 tacos to go with them. They have a nice outdoor patio area with corn hole or a large bar area inside with very friendly wait staff. We ordered takeout on the basis of all the rave reviews, Wednesday, June 15 at lunchtime. The woman who took our order was very nice...but I wish we had eaten on site, so we could have thrown our 6 inedible lobster rolls in THEIR trash barrel, and perhaps gotten a refund. The lobster smelled old and was tough. One bite each, and we were done, and out the door to another restaurant....$120.00 down the drain. What happened here? $10 lobster roll that had huge pieces of claw, came with chips and was so yummy! We saw the sign for the deal on our way to the beach and called in an order for pick up on our way out. Beth is the Best!!! Went in today for a fisherman's platter-wow!! My father and I sat at the bar while Beth provided pleasant conversation and service. The fish was haddock and, seriously, it was a whole fish! Batter was light and crispy. Scallops were cooked perfectly, falling apart. I'm picky with my tartar sauce, and this was on the sweet side. Not for me, but the platter was so good, I really didn't miss it too much. Beth was a great reason to stop in because you really can't beat fantastic service, but what a treat to have wonderful food AND service together! Decor was quite charming, and I realize many have labeled it a dive, but it truly is a cute little place that someone described as like having a drink in someone's living room. A very unique place. Not for everyone. Almost all the seating is at the bar with a couple of tables. Outside seating, expand that in good weather. The unique part is the people and the customers. When I walked in half the people in the place shuffled around the seats so that would be room for my wife and I. Then we both ordered the shrimp basket. Waitress looked at us and said "don't get that". It's been frozen and it's from Vietnam. Get the fish and chips. It's the best. And she said it's only nine bucks. We both had fish and chips and a couple of cold drinks. It's about as good as I've had for the fish and chips And my bill was $21. Promptly left her $10 tip and left extremely satisfied. But not for everyone. Unbelievably dirty, waited at least 5 minutes for someone to just acknowledge us (the place is tiny...there was no way to NOT notice we'd walked in). Waited almost 45 minutes to get our food and then was asked...now what did you order? Condiments on the table truly looked as though they hadn't been cleaned in months! The fried seafood, fries and rings were ok. It appeared that patrons typically do takeout. Makes sense that they wouldn't want to eat there. We won't be back! Perfect version of a neighborhood bar. Drinks are strong, food is good, prices are excellent and people-both customers and owner?-are friendly. Small and not impressive looking, it's comfortable and low stress with no bs or expectations. I came in early for lunch, greeted as an old friend and settled right in. Advice and banter are part of lunch. As a woman traveling alone, it was a refreshing change from being invisible or seated next to the kitchen as at so many places. My friend and I go flea marketing in MA 2x a year and always make a 40 minute trip out of our way to visit the Whaleback. We discovered this place years ago and have been coming back ever since. Yesterday was the first time I was disappointed in the food. When I opened my whole belly clam dinner, I was reminded of the "Where's the beef" commercial of yesteryear, wondering where the clams were, because they certainly skimped on the portion I got and my buddy noticed his Fisherman's platter also seemed lacking. Since we've had such good experiences in the past, we decided to give the Whaleback one more chance before moving on to a new spot. Here's hoping this was an anomaly! read more

The interior was cleaned up nicely but it sort of lost its charm. Never had the food but the drinks are good and reasonably priced.

I can see why this place is a local favorite and highly rated here. The $9 fish and chips I ordered was amazing and the fish filet barely fit on the plate lol the beer is reasonably priced too. The only downside is that the interior of the restaurant looks like a small dive bar. If you can get over that come one down for some fresh seafood! read more

I was truly disappointed by the whaleback as a longtime cape cod resident returning to the cape. It's pretty wild to me as a service professional myself - how extremely inattentive, rude, judgmental, and dismissive our server/bartender was today. The food was excellent - couldn't have been better, but the woman behind the bar should be fired for the way she treats her customers. I never say these kinds of things normally but some people just shouldn't be in customer service. She didn't greet us, rolled her eyes repeatedly and was short, asked for multiple forms of identification when the one provided was more than sufficient, was only attentive to resident customers, and was incredibly rude every time we politely asked for service. The bar wasn't even full so there was no excuse. Additionally - her whispering and laughing clearly indicated she was frustrated by our frustrations instead of showing a willingness to communicate and provide quality service she resorted to pettiness. I was, however, otherwise impressed by how much the whaleback changed and the food - I just had much higher hopes for my customer service experience. As a person in this industry myself, I truly was disappointed. She was more absorbed in talking about her wedding then providing service to her customers. Truly unfortunate. read more
