I was a bit surprised by this visit. The previous location that this one replaced was one of the better Whataburger locations in town. It had bucked the "Chicagoburger" trend of Whataburger spots going downhill after the original owners had sold to private equity. Unfortunately, this one seems to be going the wrong way. Yes, it's brand new and very well put together, but it feels smaller and colder. It's got a smaller dining area than it's predecessor, a less functional ordering area, a smaller drink station. I came by to pick up a mobile order and the staff was just confused. They have a pick up area where I was standing, and yet they didn't understand why I wasn't coming over to the register, which is clearly for placing orders. They ended up getting my order-- a combo meal-- to me in three separate trips to the pick up area. When I got my food, I went and sat down, opened the fry bag, and sure enough, my ketchup was missing, so I had to ask for some. There were several security guards roaming the property-- two were mostly standing outside and chatting, while three others were at a table, ostensibly on a lunch break. It was a really weird vibe for a restaurant location that had barely been open a week.

We snarfed a couple Alamo plates with a plethora of goodies, brown rice, shredded kale, TX blend of shredded cheeses, cherry tomatoes, black beans, diced red onion, tortilla chips, roasted pieces of chicken thigh and a killer chipotle-lime vinaigrette and a squeeze of lime....came with a slice of sourdough.....amazing. The girls both got Meditteranean protein plates, white basmati rice, roasted pieces of chicken thigh, mozzarella-tomato salad, warm chickpeas, roasted broccolini, hummus, tzatziki spicy harissa, yum. Our granddaughter got her own plate, a bento box wit' grilled brussel sprouts, grilled cauliflower, brown rice and grilled chicken which she kept trying to feed to grandma. The Kids meal was half price. We shared three cookies between 3 adults and 2 grandbabies, one L&G cookie, a brownie and one rosemary shortbread cookie. Everybody got to taste my berry smoothie. Everything we tried was very good. We'll be back for more of these "healthy" goodies.

Leaf & Grain is the spot to satisfy those cravings. This West University location is easy to find and it located on a corner of a large shopping strip. Parking is plentiful. Inside is spacious and is warm and inviting with lots of seating. Counter service is how they run business and they do it well with a great customer service. As I'm sure you've guessed from their name, they specialize in salads and grain bowls. The menu is not big by any means. A little more variety would be great. Both the salad and grain bowl categories have about 3 or 4 options each. They also have 3 plate options as well with chicken or seafood. If you're in the mood for a sandwich they have a few of those options as well. My eyes locked in on one of their seasonal warm bowls. In the summer months, they have cooler, cold options. My eyes locked in on the Massaman Curry. I'm a sucker for Thai flavors and this bowl was calling out to me. It came with a bed of brown rice, topped with chicken, peppers, onions, cilantro, spinach and topped with a curry sauce. They also gave a chili powder on the side if I wanted to make it spicy along with some peanuts. Yes please! The bowl was presented nicely. I mixed it all together and added a dash of the Thai chili powder. This dish was delicious. Not trying to be funny, but I wasn't expecting that much flavor coming out of a dish from a grain and salad spot. The ingredients were fresh and the curry was so flavorful. I tasted hints of coconut that made it slightly sweet, but it packed some heat to it as well. I loved the contrast in textures as well. I washed it down with a Mango Deck (mango, strawberries, banana, agave and coconut milk) smoothie which was a perfect, refreshing sip to go along with the spicy meal. Overall, I liked this place alot. Sometimes it's nice to have a meal without having a guilty conscience afterwards. I will definitely come back if in the area.

It's a cute casual, order at the counter setup with plenty of booths and tables, plus a few outdoor spots in front. We kept it simple and ordered the chicken kebab hummus bowl and the chicken kebab salad bowl. Both were great. They were fairly similar, but we agreed the hummus bowl had a slight edge. There were a lot of other items on the menu that sounded fantastic. The food quality was great and the staff was kind. Honestly, this feels like a place that will probably make its way into our monthly rotation. My only small critique is that it's a little on the pricey side. Around $21 each for a bowl is a bit high for a casual Saturday lunch for me. (But with that said, still excited to come back!).

I will say this flavor particularly was a 5/5 for me. It was exactly what I was looking for (carbs, spicy Caesar salad...not hard to please). However, I haven't found myself wanting to come back even though I drive past this area pretty frequently. If I did come back, I'd probably just order the same flavor again because it was that good. The Zeppelin is very filling though and kept me good for 2 meals, I just think nothing else on the menu appealed to me (other than the Spicy Tejano) enough to steer away from my go-to sandwich/bowl places if the craving for that type of food ever came. The staff were super friendly though and parking wasn't terrible. I can see why they chose the location since it is a great lunch spot for people in the area tbat want something quick but don't wanna run into the mall/opt for fast food drive thru.
