The perfect last stop on my trip to Buffalo. I make it a point to get cupcakes any time we travel somewhere new, and THANK GOODNESS for wheatberry. Almost every single bakery seemed to be closed on Sundays except for them. Lucky me though. It turned out to be great. Location is easy to get to and has ample parking. Staff were friendly and helpful. Prices were extremely fair on their baked good. I ended up getting a harvest ale muffin (amazing) and two cupcakes. The carrot cake one was very good. I loved the frosting and the cake was so moist. The white chocolate raspberry one was okay. The cake was a little dry but the frosting helped out with that. I could have used more raspberry flavor as well. If you don't like super sugary frosting this is the place for you. Both frostings were so light and fluffy. I could have eaten them straight. When we entered the shop there was a strong smell of chocolate. We were welcomed by a very friendly smile from behind the counter. The counter with danishes and pastries looked fabulous. The shelves with bread looked great too. Besides the bread and pastries, they serve sandwiches from Wednesday to Saturday from 11am - 3pm. There are only 2 tables to sit at, I guess most people order them to go. I ordered an asiago cheese panini. Shaved steak, a big grilled red pepper and applewood bacon on a wonderful panini. Not easy to eat, the pepper tends to slip out all the time. The taste however was great. As a side I picked the mixed potato salad. (Other options are mixed fruit, bag of chips or small salad). Soup was an option too for $2 extra. I also ordered a cup of coffee. There are 4 different coffees available (regular, decaf and 2 flavored ones). Stopped here on my way home because I was craving a chocolate chip cookie. I arrived too late in the day, because they were all out. But I didn't arrive too late in the day to get a chocolate croissant and a pastry heart to eat over a span of a couple days. Each pastry was delicious in their own way. I use to come here a handful of times pre-pandemic. I remember the cupcake I bought was on the dry side. Their pastries were good. Those snail things and bear claws, delicious!! Once bought a chocolate cake there, phenomenal!! Coffee cakes, were always a crowd pleaser at work. However, I have since changed my lifestyle and am now vegan. Was very excited to see they offered vegan options. I bought a cookie and a confetti cupcake. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed. The chocolate chip cookie had a weird texture and it felt very oily. The cupcake was dense. Hockey pock dense and heavy. The frosting was just OK. I've never thrown away a cupcake for being inedible before. My boyfriend who's usual more forgiving than I, agreed and could not stomach it either. We had to throw both away. They did have a decent kale and bean soup which was vegan. If you're not vegan... you'll probably love this place. If you are... your options are very limited. read more

Have been here a few times and today finally had the honor of meeting the owners! We live behind it on the next block and our puppy got out and ran there. They were wonderful to her which speaks volumes about a person. Gave her water and biscuits and called is while we drove around and looked for her. We stopped back in later in the afternoon to say thank you and get some goodies. They have the best cannoli I have ever had!! A goods selection of giant cookies and vegan options. I was eager to try Wheatberry with its good reviews and neighborhood location. I walked in around 2pm Saturday afternoon (they close at 6pm) to an empty bakery to order a sandwich. It took almost 20 minutes to make a sandwich which was disappointingly bland (Asiago steak) - especially for $9! But it was hearty and served warm. The display cases were pretty much picked over, the garbage bin was full, and unfortunately, there seemed to be a bunch of fruit flies buzzing around, adding to an atmosphere of abandon. I ordered a fruit salad side and the first cup I was served was spoiled/sour. I gave it back, and another staff member scolded my server, "what bucket did you get it out of?" The replacement was better but after the bucket comment, I wondered if this was much better than a hospital fruit cup. I wanted to try the much lauded lemon bars but another staff member told me that the tray "had fallen" so no lemon bars for the day. I'm not a baker so I don't know if "fallen" is a baking term because otherwise I was imagining someone had dropped it on the floor! Overall, a little disappointed. Sooooo fresh and soft!They have a bread schedule that we keep on our fridge to see what special is avail that day. We bought a 1/2 dozen cupcakes the other day, with fabulous flavors like, "boston cream", "salted caramel", and "bananas foster". Don't they sound good? Let me tell you - what a disappointment. While they look good and the cake is a fine cupcake, they don't live up to their names. The fillings that make the flavor are non-existent - there was less than a teaspoon on top of each cupcake! If you split them in half the wrong way, it's just a vanilla cupcake with some buttercream. Blah. We expected the boston cream to ooze out of the middle. Nope. Caramel? Uh-uh. At least there was a dehydrated banana on top to distinguish that one. The only reason they didn't get a lower score was because the last time we were there, we had some amazing bread, the apple cheddar croissant we had was fantastic, and their snail was good, too. Visited again yesterday...and WOW! Bought the six pack of macarons..assorted flavors..along with oh so tasty rugelach and twisty bread(many..to last over the weekend). The NY Times ran a recipe in their Wednesday Dining section perhaps a week or two ago about making actual French Macarons. The ingredients I have however I have never been handy with a pastry bag and I don't turn my oven on in the summer. As downtrodden as I was I recalled that this place sold Macarons. And they do...no need ever to turn on my oven or buy a stupid pastry bag and tip. A six pack of these lovely, cloud like confections will run $9.50. BEAUTIFUL little almond paste sliders...just waiting for their eventual demise. Enough with the almond paste ...The Twisties just have my heart all tied up in goodness!! Let me preface this review by stating that this was my first time here and I sampled only a small selection of their offerings. My intention is to return and try more bakery items at some point in the future. Stopped in here an hour before closing (they close at 6pm) on Saturday. We were looking for a sweet and after reading so many great reviews, a baked good seemed to be a good choice for our stop. We bought an artisan loaf of bread (a boule' of some sort), a brownie, and a red velvet cupcake. The shop inside is cute, nice. The display case at that point in the day didn't have a ton of items in it and I was disappointed that all of the chocolate chip cookies were gone. I would have loved to snarfle on a cookie! The sugar and oatmeal raisin varieties were huge! The brownie was okay. Certainly not the best I've ever had. I'm a moist, soft cookie/cake/baked good kind of person. I don't like anything crunchy, chewy, dry. This brownie was DRY and like... crumbly... Though the chocolate taste was rich and decadent (you can tell they use high quality cocoa), the dryness was a turn off. Didn't even eat half. :( The red velvet cupcake was better. The cake part was also dry. Disappointing. It was also very small for $2.50. But the FROSTING... Oh the frosting... It was like pure whipped cream cheese with only a hint of sweetness. That's my favorite kind of frosting! YUM! I had 2 pieces of toast this morning and it was good. But once again, the bread is a little dry. Plus, in comparison to Wegmans or Tops bread I can't say this was WAY better. And I actually like the Wegs and Tops breads better. I feel like a schmuck for thinking that chain store bakery bread is better, since I'm all for the mom & pop, locally owned businesses. The baked goods I've tried so far at Wheatberry just didn't do anything significant for my taste buds... But I'd be willing to try again... read more

I've been traversing the county in search of the perfect loaf of Pumpernickel bread, and Wheatberry has earned my Summa Cum Laude. I cold called to ask how the loaf was made (pumpernickel flour with a rye slurry on top, which could be omitted on request). Special ordered said loaf for pickup today. Co-owner Scott took my phone order, & baked the loaf. Chatted with co-owner Lindsay while I perused the treats on display. BFF requested a loaf of rye, & we tried an almond bear claw, & a pecan danish, both of which were stale. They were probably baked on Wednesday evening. What a disappointment. This young couple obviously love their business and are devoted to delivering quality product. Lindsay did mention that one of the bakers moved away, so understaffing may be an issue. Only 3 stars for now. Fresh, AMAZING bread, 2 thumbs up for Lindsay & Scott. No lemon bars today, darnit. They are closed on Monday; I imaging they bake pastry all day. I will test that theory on a Tuesday. They also make fresh soups every day, & will custom make soup as well. I have found my bakery. read more

Walked in today with my boyfriend and met Scott who was extremely nice and made a genuine effort to get to know us as customers. Didn't push for us to get anything we didn't want but there was also a short selection left. Ended up buying just a lemon bar, a red velvet cupcake and a giant oatmeal raisin cookie (the size of my face). Lemon bar was absolutely delicious, heavy in lemon flavor and has a buttery pastry that isn't too dense. Red velvet cupcake was a nice fluffy cake but had a cream cheese frosting which I'm not a fan of (in general, not just from this bakery). The oatmeal raisin cookie was nice and soft. All in all, I'm extremely happy with all my purchases and my experience here. Would definitely make this a regular spot for all my baked goods. Highly recommend =) read more

Friendly staff, great selection! Stopped in for a coffee and a couple cucidattis (which they wrapped up in a cute package to go). They have various artisan breads and foccaccias. Huge cookies, various unique cupcakes, and other baked good selections. Can easily stop here for a quick lunch to go or to satisfy your sweet tooth. They serve coffee - do it yourself set up with a few options. I think they should put a couple tables and chairs in and they could easily draw a small lunch crowd. read more

A cute little shop that's easy to pass by without noticing... but don't! This area is becoming a great place to shop for a meal... with Federal around the corner, and the florist across the street :) Wheatberry made me wish I ate more carbs, and sugar, and all those good things. It took all I had in me to leave with only a loaf of, what turned out to be, really delicious ciabatta. Although I was really in search of some corn bread, I had no regrets once I bit into the crunchy crust and chewy insides of that loaf. Mmmmm. I'm glad I put half in the freezer... Get a big cookie but please understand it's not actually a big cookie....it's a ginormous cookie that ate a tire off of a F150 Truck on the way to the display case. The flavor of these deals are outstanding and you can eat them in chunks over 3 days and they'll still be awesome. Of course you can eat one in a sitting and then be on a survivor show stranded on an island for a month without any hunger pangs but I leave the adventure up to you. The owners are are without a doubt some of the best personalities I have had the pleasure of interacting with and I go far and wide in search of good cookies, so I meet many a baker. Every time I visit Buffalo(I live in Seattle WA) I make sure I stop here. There is no particular item I make sure to buy because everything they sell are delicious. We love giving our business to wheatberry! It is a wonderful thing to have a stand alone bakery in the neighborhood! We so appreciate the variety of vegan desserts as well. The cupcakes are our Go-to when attending an impromptu get together or for a birthday. My only complaint is that the vegan cupcakes tend to be a bit dry. My suspicion is that they are likely make ahead and frozen which can dry them out . Otherwise, this bakery is fabulous and super clean and the service is friendly and attentive. read more

Not consistent some cakes are great others can be horrible! I've ordered three cakes only one was decent others were so bad I had to toss them. When I returned to complain...The company didn't refund me or credit me but the mother of the owner did admit there was too much almond flavoring and the baker who made it was fired! I have the most generous and awesome boss in the world for many, many reasons, but the number one reason is that he usually brings me a cupcake at least twice a month. I work ten months out of the year and for my last day he brought in four cupcakes for me to choose from- two Red Velvet (he knows they're my favorite!), one Peanut Butter, and one Bananas Foster. I chose the Red Velvet and it was perfect. The cream cheese frosting stole the show and it was most definitely the best I've ever had. We split the peanut butter, which was good, but I didn't like it as much. Which, could honestly be a matter of preference seeing as I'm not a big fan of chocolate cake. My students split the other Red Velvet and the Bananas Foster and they were very impressed. I also liked that their cupcakes came in a fancy little folded square of baking paper. I don't like the crinkly cupcake tins because they grip onto the cake and half of it ends up in crumbles or on the floor. I gave them a four instead of a five because I haven't physically been to the location and I don't feel like I've tried enough of the menu to make a 5-star commitment. read more

I needed to get a couple cakes for my sons communion but I didn't want to get a store bought cake and my go to bakeries were just too out of the way for the part of town we were in. I read lots of great reviews and decided to order the cakes even though I've never had anything from here. We had a 1/2 sheet cake which is big, very tall. Chocolate cake with raspberry filling and buttercream frosting. This cake was delicious, it was a solid dense cake. We also had ordered a 8" round cassata cake. That cake was excellent. I should have ordered that in a bigger size. The cake was light and airing and the filling with the nuts and chocolate was perfect. People that don't normally have cake wanted to have a piece. I really had to think about whether or not to write this one......Scott, one of the owners was SO nice.....chatted @ length with me and then gave me a sample macaron. The cookie was very good....@ least from what I've read about how their texture should be, since I've never had one before. I'm hoping this endeavor will stay in business. From reading the reviews, it looks as though people hate it or love it. Sounds like the cakes may be the sellers here. I will admit that on the Sunday morning I was there, probably 4 customers stopped in, but only bought bread. I did not try the bread but not sure if I will since one of the other reviewers seems to have the same thoughts I have, and she was not crazy for the breads either. I bought several single items: a red velvet and a chocolate cupcake. Their cupcakes are very dry and the chocolate one was HEAVILY salted as well as BURNED. In 64 years of life, I have never had a burned bakery item. The icings on the other hand pretty good. Also got a lemon square - the base [usually made of shortbread] was not crisp, not buttery and it was soggy.....the lemon filling was good. Hubby said the bear claw he had was dry or perhaps stale. I also bought a pastry heart which went into the garbage since it was so HARD I could not bite it, instead having to break it apart. I was afraid of breaking a tooth on it! Unlike most crispy, flaky hearts which have a drizzle of white icing, this had a drizzle, but then some hard unidentifiable coating underneath the drizzle. Yikes, way too many minuses for this establishment for me. I'll stick with Tops and Wegmans since there aren't any bakeries around anymore. If I want gourmet items there's Dessert Deli, Premier Gourmet and even Butterwood's. So sad. A definite waste of $11.00 too! Stumbled across this place on my way to visit a friend in the area at work. Immediately after entering I was greeted by the owner who apologized for having a limited amount of selections to be made, but that he had "had a good day" which you could tell was true, because there was one or two of anything left that was there. He suggested a couple of different options, I took him up on one of them (chocolate chip muffins) and he threw in a chocolate chunk cookie for free. I'm so happy this bakery is so close to home for me, on the other hand I am going to gain so much weight because this bakery is so close to home for me. The sweet treats they make here are amazing! There are also quite a few vegan options as well. The staff is so kind and always willing to help you out. I've only tried sweets from here but am very willing and excited to try their breads/soups/sandwiches as well. The cupcakes have a strange texture ( spongy) but the frosting is decent- not overly sweet and not at all gritty. The peanut butter cookies are huge and tasty! and second only to the bread on my previous visit...I wasn't a fan of the brownies, I am no pro baker but they may need a little more salt in the batter, the flavor was bland. The pizza ( mushroom and fontina I believe) was good but this to could benefit from a sprinkling of salt. I won't go out of my way to come here but if I was close and wanted pizza or a loaf of bread I would stop in. The workers are really friendly and welcoming, that is a big plus. read more
