A busy mess! Came in to stand in a line to be told it'll be about an hour. We ordered and sat down. Had to wipe the food from our table. We got our fried pickles about 45 minutes later. Then about another 45 minutes later we got our po boys. Her fried shrimp were very good. My roast beef was lunch meat heated up in a gravy. Meat to bun ratio was way off. Kind of salty and 100% messy. Fried pickles were very tasty. We had to ask about our beignets and were told they would let the kitchen know we're ready. It's been 2 hours since we got here. I happily make the drive all the way from Destin just to eat here, and it is always worth it. Today I had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, Courtney (hope I am spelling that right), and he could not have been kinder. Talking with him felt like being back home, pure Louisiana hospitality through and through. For lunch, I started with the fried mushrooms (a solid 1000/10), then ordered the fried shrimp poboy, which is also available blackened or grilled. It came fully dressed with LTM, just like it should, and let me tell you, it was incredible. Bold, authentic flavor in every bite, from the shrimp to the breading to the mushrooms. As if that was not enough, Courtney was generous enough to let me try all three desserts on the menu: banana pudding, bread pudding, and classic beignets. Every single one was fantastic, but the banana pudding stole my heart, absolute perfection. This place is worth every mile and every dollar. The bartenders today were also so kind and helpful (I hate that I did not catch their names). I left beyond satisfied and already looking forward to my next visit. I would highly suggest if you are there with someone who is getting the same po'boy you are -order the whole size for $5 more and split it- My fried shrimp were better than the way more expensive place we ate at the night before. All of our first times trying beignets....YUMMMM I'm glad I only got 6 because I would have eaten all of them if there was extra. All of the staff that we talked to were super nice. After spending 5 years in Louisiana, I have found that almost all crawfish I have had out of the state is not good. Luckily, where Y'at is not one of them and conveniently way closer vs. Cubs. Crawfish were large, as expected mid season, and definitely has that Cajun spice/heat to it. Pricy but not the worst I've seen ($7.99/lb). Growing up in New Orleans we're accustomed to a certain quality of Cajun foods. There was a group of us who got together and met at Where Y'at's. My friends Wendy and Mark frequent the place and know the owner and his backstory. Evidently, Courtney settled in the Navarre area after Hurricane Katrina. It was about 12 of us in the group, all of which grew up in and around the New Orleans area and Slidell. We all cook very well ourselves. Most people do who grow up New Orleans ha ha. I was quite surprised and pleased at Mark's suggestions. Courtney was due to bring in some fresh grouper which is a favorite of min every time I go to the Florida. Love those grouper sandwiches! I chose a group of poor boy which I've never had. We usually get them on bones in Florida. They had Leidenheimer bread, which is another local favorite. I actually saw Courtney bring the grouper out and put it in the counter where they also sell fresh "catch of the day". The grouper was fried to perfection! Mark & Wendy suggested I try the onion rings. Typically onion rings are over coated with breading. Not my fave. However, these were the best I've ever had and I've had quite a few. The batter was very light and did not take away from the onion flavor. You have sometimes you abide into an onion ring in the whole onion comes out the ring stays not in this case. I'm salivating thinking of them. And Mark & Wendy kept raving about the red beans and rice. Do you know anything about New Orleans? You know everyone makes their own version of gumbo and red beans and rice. I have to hand it to them, they are dead most of my friends, red beans and rice...ha ha darn near close to mine! Several in our party had never tasted maque choux, which I find interesting. It was a staple in my community. It's Cajun twist on cream corn. One must try it to fully appreciate it. Although my versions a bit creamier, their's hit the mark. We usually make a yearly trip to Navarre in this will definitely be a stop. We won't miss. Next time I'll bring a quart of each back to the beach house! The ambience and the place is typical small venue hidden gem that only locals in New Orleans would know about, if it were in New Orleans. The employees are super friendly, even as busy as they were, which ought to tell you something right there. I hear there's an outdoor area where music is played in tables are set up. My G'daughter was visiting from DC during spring break, had researched Where Y'at and was anxious to go. We got there around 4pm, before the dinner crowd and was 3rd in line to order - waited about 15 minutes. She ordered the 2lb crawfish boil w/o sausage, I ordered shrimp basket at about $20 each plus an appetizer. Well at about 11pm she began vomiting and had diarrhea, non-stop! I immediately thought FOOD POISONING - the CRAWFISH!! I was ok from my shrimp meal and fried mushrooms app. She was scheduled to fly back to DC at 6am - which I had to reschedule (pay change fee). She continued vomiting and diarrhea throughout the day, we still go to the airport for 7:30pm Flt anyway but Delta didn't think she should fly - again canceled her flight. BTW, she had sprained her ankle prior to arrival and was on a knee scooter. I nurse her and returned to the airport the next day, she feels much better. I now call Where Y'at, request the Mgr and leave a VM - no reply after 2 days. I call again - VM ... I do finally get a call from Mgr. Courtney. I explain everything and request a refund for the crawfish - only. We had spent $63.xx and I was requesting $23 refund ... this Mgr. went back and forth with me about it not being food poisoning. No one else complained and how would they survive if they refunded money to everyone complaining ... DUH, what about good business practice!? She finally offered us a complimentary meal - I told her again that my G'daughter was back in DC and I'd NEVER come back to their restaurant!! I've gotten food poisoning from another seafood restaurant and thought it was a new allergy - Allergist said very often in this area Restaurants will serve BAD seafood ... thus I had food poisoning NOT allergy. I recently had dinner with a friend and she too purchased BAD seafood from Where Y'at, felt ignored and said she'd never go there again either! A FAVORITE STOP. The food is so good at this perfectly splendid small and inviting "hole-in-the-wall"seafood restaurant / fresh market. I've had the Royal Red shrimp, which reminds me of baby lobsters , and the crawfish special which was worth the mess of cleaning to eat! The key to any meal is their garlic butter!!
