During a weekend trip to meet up with friends in the Plano area, we decided to do a double-date night at Whiskey Cake. Our overall experience was positive, although we weren't blown away. We were seated on the patio, which is a little sliver of covered concrete with not-so-stellar views of the parking lot and freeway. The awkward layout also means that you are blinded and overheated for at least 2 hours as the sun sets and burns a hole through your retina. I'd recommend indoor dining if given the choice. As far as the food goes, the standouts were my Blood Orange Gimlet, a fruity cocktail that tasted less like sugar and more like uber-fresh juice, and the namesake whiskey cake. The cocktail was dangerous in its yumminess because you could easily knock back three or four without realizing how very drunk they make you. The whiskey cake is a hefty portion that four of us shared without too much jockeying for fork position. It tasted like the cake form of pecan pie. Divine. Folks at our table ordered the tuna burger, the OMG burger, and the chicken melt. The sandwiches were laughably huge...definitely conjured up images of old Carls Jr. ads with drippy sauce running down one's hands. You might want to stick with a salad if you're going on a date with a new suitor. The ingredients were fresh, but the whole was not greater than the sum of its parts in any of the dishes. I'd recommend that the Whiskey Cake folks offer the O of the OMG burger as a fabulous onion ring appetizer. It was the highlight of the main course. Service was fine, atmosphere was okay, not great, and the food was a solid B+. I'm not too familiar with the Plano food scene, so I don't know how it might stack up against local competition. I'd go back for drinks and dessert, but might skip the meal. read more

Why did we not come here sooner?! Some reason I thought this place is more of a bar so with a toddler we avoided it. We decided to give it a try one Sunday and so glad we did! Love the farm to table concept and all the cocktails are delicious and made with real juice. My favorites are the Texas Bluebonnet and the Honey Basil Collins. The kale and pomegranate salad is fantastic and full of flavor. Best salad I have EVER had with fried poach egg and crunchy chick peas and bacon. YUM!!!! The deviled eggs are awesome and always have different toppings. The baked goat cheese is to die for. The duck isexcellent. The brisket, 3 little pigs and OMG burgers were solid but I would try something else first if it is your first visit. We called ahead and thankfully only waited a few minutes for a table. That seems to be key. I love their menu. It's hard to choose what to order. Chicken and waffles : This was hands down the yummiest item. I've never loved the execution at most places but this one was just right. Fluffy waffles, tasty chicken batter with tender chicken tenders, perfect sunny side egg, and just the right amount of gravy and maple syrup. It all equals the perfect bite. Fried green tomatoes: fresh tomatoes with a yummy dipping sauce. Wish it was less "fried" or there was a healthier version. Don't ask me why or how to do that. Deviled eggs: ours had okra and tomato. I wish I could tell you more but the runner didn't know. Very fresh though. Omg burger: we got the gluten free bun which took away from it I think (our fault completely). It wasn't my favorite burger. Whiskey cake: Easily one of the top five desserts in the Metroplex. Second only to the toffee cake at Victor tangos. But a very close second. I was travelling through the area and in search of some place to eat lunch. I checked Yelp and Whiskey Cake had the most and highest reviews of any eatery in the immediate area, so I headed there. I was not disappointed. The ambiance of the place reminded me of a modern day saloon. This is one of those farm-to-table restaurants, where the food is sourced locally to reduce the carbon footprint of transporting ingredients, and also to ensure that ingredients are always fresh. But the point is that the food is delicious. I had one of the Texas-sized burgers recommended by my server Karissa, which was excellent. I also had the adult mac & cheese and one of the fresh-squeezed juices (The Hulk, I believe). The burger was wonderful, if a bit messy since it was so huge. The mac & cheese was spot on. The juice was good, even though I'm not a juice person. What really impressed me however, were how tasty the kettle chips were. Burgers here come with kettle chips and sides have to be ordered separately. This is typical for a lot of places, but usually the kettle chips are bland. Here, they were seasoned perfectly and I was actually left wishing I had more. That's never been the case before. Food and ambiance aside, another thing I must mention is how great my server, Karissa was. She was very friendly and had spot-on recommendations. She checked in on me often and even took time to make small talk. When I was done, I asked her to leave my water for me as I went to wash up. When I got back to my table for the bill, everything was cleaned off, including my water. I was a tad annoyed but didn't mention it. Karissa brought me a new water without my asking, apologizing that the whole table was cleaned off. I was very impressed with her service and friendliness. This is a true scratch kitchen, you can modify or add ingredients on any dish. I'm a vegetarian and was able to mix and match my meal to fit me. It would be nice if they had more variety of just vegetarian options but I'm taking a star away for my personal dietary restrictions. This place is great but the hostess at the front wasn't that friendly. She was just "ok". For how nice this place is they should have a nice hostess as well. After years of being on my bookmark list I've finally made it here! I was thrilled to even walk through the doors. Location is on the southbound side of Dallas Tollway and Parker. Near Krogers and other shops. When I was walking in I noticed they had really nice waiting areas outside. They were pretty much lounges where people can sit and wait for their table. Another thing I saw was they are a local farm to kitchen restaurant which I didn't know. So in the front corridor there are local knick knacks to buy like candles and honey. Once I made myself in I sat at the bar so I wouldn't have to wait 30 minutes for a table. There were couches here and there and for a minute you'd think you were in your living room. For the bar area there are high tables and chairs to sit or you can sit at the bar. I chose to sit smack dab in the center of the bar which I don't recommend. Not because of the attention but the seating is awful. It was either the chair or the floor but you'd rock back and forth. I moved to another spot and didn't have any problems. The sweet bartender recommended me the guava cocktail, has guava juice, pineapple juice and more. Luckily it was happy hour until 7pm so my drink was $2 off. At first the drink was too sour but after she added more simple syrup and juice it was perfect! The bartenders were busy because the place was pretty packed. One of the gals moved like a dancer while doing her thing. There was also a cute "helper" who moved along as well. For my meal I got the Atlantic cod sandwich and parmesan fries. The cod sandwich was nice and light. The sandwich wasn't overly seasoned or heavy. If it needed some adjustments I'd change the bread into a lighter less doughy bread. The sandwich comes with kettle chips and these aren't salty or oily. Which is what I'd thought they would be. Which is why I got fries on the side... doesn't make sense but that's what I did. The parmesan fries were just ok and not really great. You can't substitute anything for the chips but you can add on anything. Overall my next meal here would be the three lil pigs because the visual of that dish is awesome. I saw the customer next to me order that and I couldn't stop looking at it. Yes this place is a bit pricey but if it's local and spiffy they gotta stay away from cheap. read more

Came here for brunch and it was a mad house. They must be doing something right to have so many people crammed into their building and spilling it into the parking lot. Our wait time for 2 was 45+ minutes. They say is at a shared table that was just divided by a piece of wood on the table. I get the concept of that but I didn't care for it. We had a friendly, attentive server but the energy the whole time we were there was chaotic. The second we finished eating we were handed our check and the hostesses were staring at us and our table as if to tell us to leave now, because they needed the table. Whiskey Cake! You know how you see a restaurant and think to yourself "That's gotta be a funky-hip place that I have to get around to trying sometime"? Well today was that day and I was, well, a bit let down. :( Environment: The decor of the place is, uh, barnyard-warehouse chic. Metal letters 'EIEIO' hang up above the exit, and the lamps above the tables are essentially lightbulbs encased by loose metal coils. The bar stools are metal, tables are wooden, burgers are served on floor tiles (creative presentation, questionable functionality), and the silverware is bundled together in a napkin by a giant nut (like, nuts and bolts kind of nut). I'm telling you, chic farmhouse. Service: Our server Danielle rocked an awesome hairdo and was polite and attentive. She let us know that all the food and brews were locally grown/made (that gets brownie points!), and also that we could get half order combos of the sandwiches and salads and they'd just be charged half price. Awesomesauce! I thought. A chance to try more things!! I went for the Portobello melt and the watermelon and peach salad. My friend got the OMG burger, medium. Food: The serving size of the melt left some things to be desired. For six dollars, the half sandwich looked a little skimpy, and the potato chips on the side were also a bit sparse. I wished my melt was... well, meltier. It was cooler side of warm, but I would have loved it to be hot. The taste was flavorful though, and the mushroom slices were succulent. The salad's presentation was beautiful!! Came with giant chunks of sweet watermelon and slices of peach. I was a bit disappointed in this dish in that the greens were drowned in the dressing to the point they were wilting. I mean, I understand that people can get dressing happy, but the vinaigrette was already pretty sour. The extra dose threw off the entire togetherness of the dish -- the fruit tasted misplaced in the sourness. My friend had a more pleasurable gastronomic experience than I did, I think. He got the OMG burger and said it was really good. Managed to finish all of it and was totally stuffed!! Then, dessert. What's a visit to Whiskey Cake without... well, the whiskey cake? For $8 a serving, I was expecting greatness. Eh, well, it was good. Definitely able to make up for my entree. But not entirely sure if it was worth the money. The cake was well spiced with a very deep caramel flavor. Pecans on top added some texture and the fresh whipped cream helped to cool things off. It lives up to its name - the Whiskey Cake is yummy! Warm and not too sweet, with a crunchy candied crust, and a dollop of fresh whipped cream on top. VERY GOOD! The ingredients are fresh, and you can tell. I had the turkey burger which was really good. I was a bit disappointed that the burger came with only about 10 chips as a "garnish" and you had to purchase sides ($2-5 each) separately. The bacon mac and cheese and Parmesan fries (though not quite crispy enough for my liking) were tasty, though. I just think $14-16 for a burger and a small side was overpriced for the amount of food. I guess you're paying for the fresh and local ingredients. The service was excellent - my glass never ran dry, and food was out quick. Hostesses were friendly. The whole vibe/ambiance of the restaurant is cool. The patio area looked like it has great potential - I bet it's fun in warmer weather. It was too cold to see tonight. Living in Uptown, I can't say that I would make the trek up there often just for the food and the price (especially considering cost for gas to get there, too). It's good, but there are places I like better close by. It is, however, quite good and if you're in the area, worth checking out. For my side I chose the Parmesan fries, which were so fresh cut and rich in taste ketchup was not even needed. Now they specialize in so many things from beef, chicken and fish to salads and more. Now for the finale the ultimate cake of cakes , Whiskey Cake! The cake is served with homemade whip cream to tie it all together. It is rich, but not to rich and served warmed up, it is as incredible as everyone says and you can't help but eat every last bite nut and all. We ordered the mimosa flight, which contains 4 juice infused champagnes, they were yummy ! I ordered the creme brûlée French toast sliders, I was skeptical when they came out since it had a fruit jam spread on it, something a little new to me but I got the concept It's needed for the sliders. It was delicious, everything blended so well. The jam, the vanilla dipped buns didn't even realize they were sliders anymore. Definitely try it if you love some French toast. Whiskey cake is definitely up there on recommend brunch locations for the Plano area! I brought my coworker here for her first experience. We had an early lunch and enjoyed the lovely patio seating. Started with the deviled eggs(they change it up each time I've ordered!), super good! I've gotten the goat cheese appetizer in the past (good option if you have a group or are especially hungry!) Whiskey cake is known for providing mostly local ingredients with a spin on it, for a modest price. A normal meal will run you 15$ if you don't get a drink, but the hand crafted drinks are quite superb (guava gimlet and the wabbit smash are killer.) I got the chicken and cheese melt because it is extremely filling and I can never say no to a pesto mayo! My coworker got the wood grilled pork brisket steak, which she said was a little dry and could use some sauce. To get the full experience we also split the whiskey cake! Very soft and extremely filling. Definitely order half to-go unless you have at least 3-4 people helping you! Our server seemed good but being a Monday lunch it did seem a little understaffed. Lunch took about an hour and 15 minutes so might want to save this place for dinner if you have a strict lunch time! One of the biggest tips I can give is to take advantage of the wait list! You can call ahead on the super busy brunch days and put your name on the list. I recommend calling at least 1.5 hours ahead just to check the time and possibly put your name on the list.
