May 2026 new ownership review/update : Still the same old places, a few subtle changes, looks like a restaurant on the inside now, but the outside is still the same fish Camp atmosphere... nice menu, some new things, some of the old things are gone, but that's apples and oranges. Overall, I think anytime you get new management in and they're willing to freshen up things, in the long run it's a good thing. You can't keep what's old old forever, everything's got to be refreshed. Now, all you need to do is get rid of those tiny drinking glasses and get the largER plastic restaurant glasses... I know there's value (for the owners and nobody else) in having a waitress continually run back-and-forth to your table to refill your drink (yeaaaa, good service!) but that's not for me, give me a good size drink and everybody's happy! Don't take away too much of what this place used to be, don't refresh too much, and don't try to add or subtract too much... Remember, this was a successful business and most of us like it just the way it was... Most of it. And oh, get some big boy french fries, these little half size things don't work... Also, still no shrimp and catfish Poboys on the menu? Original review: Good place to eat, one of my favorites, on weekdays, I have never had any problems with the food or service here, so rest assured. I've only been here a couple of times when it was super busy. However, aside from a little bit long wait to be served, everything was always good. The star of the show at Whiteys is being able to have a good meal, while looking at the beautiful scenery along the river, that really brings out what the place is all about. The wait, staff is always friendly there, they go out of their way to make you feel at home. We had not eaten at Whitey's in quite some time because of it very fried menu. We heard new owners/new menu and decided to give it a try. The service was excellent from the time we sat down to paying our bill. The restaurant still had the same great fish camp vibe with indoor/outdoor or bar seating. There was live music when we were there so there wasn't any available outdoor dining. We ordered the fish dip as an appetizer and blackened grouper for our meal. Whitey's has been purchased by Harry's Restaurants of St. Augustine. It has been "refreshed" and our Red Hats, here for the May monthly luncheon, enjoyed the decor--plenty of fish and animals on the walls, along with a striking mural. We all chose something different, I believe, for our meals but everyone said they enjoyed the food. There was a delay in being seated because there was a mix-up in where the waitstaff had been assigned. Also, there are no reservations so even though I called ahead twice (once in April and then the night before) to alert the staff that we had about twelve people coming, they really were not ready for us. Still we got to eat together and most of us try to go with the flow (there's always one, though, and I apologize that she expressed her impatience to the servers who had no control over either the seating delay or when the food was ready). There was at least one other large group and even another Red Hat chapter! I had the broiled redfish and Cole slaw. Our waitress made me a special drink with grenadine syrup--see photo. Excellent! Gotta say I'm loving the new updates. Stopped in for drinks to check it out and was pleasantly surprised. So happy they now have REAL GLASSES. No more plastic cups! My dirty martini was frosty & perfectly done. My sister got their cucumber melon martini which was light and fresh and slightly sweet. The service was great & friendly. I met my future daughter-in-law! Brooklyn is an absolute sweetheart that we had the privilege of having as our lunch server on Saturday. This was my first-ever dining experience in Jacksonville, Florida, and it couldn't have made a better impression. The service was warm, friendly, and genuinely top-tier. From the host, to Brooklyn, to her mom Amy (yes, I got to meet my future in-laws), to even the random staff who rescued me when I got lost looking for the bathroom -- every single person we met was welcoming and kind. The Gilligan's Island-style atmosphere, complete with a gas pump on the outdoor deck, was new for me. I'm a Boston city guy now living in LA, so this kind of "Florida coastal dive-chic" was a first -- and I loved every bit of it. Food-wise? Phenomenal. The shrimp bisque was a revelation -- my first time trying it, since I've always been a lobster bisque loyalist. But this one? Creamy, buttery, and left an aftertaste so good it felt like the bisque kissed you back. The white wine cream pasta was so incredible I demolished it too fast, then kept picking at everyone else's food. I didn't realize how full I was until hours later... and even now, three days later back home in LA, I'm still craving it enough to plan another trip to Jacksonville before the year's out. Stopped by for happy hour and dessert. We got a pound of peel and eat a shrimp (not included on happy hour) and the fried mushroom (half off). Was disappointed they no longer have their bread pudding, but we got the lava cake instead and it was delicious. Our server was great. She checked on us a lot and everyone else they're working was so polite. I got caught up, looking at all the critters hanging from the ceiling and almost bumped into one of them and we had a good laugh. This place has critters and decor all over the place which makes it very interesting to just look around. I thought the alligator fish was hilarious. They didn't even call out my name when the text didn't go through and had the audacity to talk back to us when we complained about how long it was when we were told it was only going to be 35-40 minutes and it had been 50! Under new ownership and recently renovated, we decided to go with neighbors and give it a try again. The duality had deteriorated for several of the past few years. The new menu incorporates some of Harry's Cajun dishes and the fried food was reduced. New flooring and decor but true to the original fish camp vibe. A children's area has been added for young families and the pool room removed. Less of a bar scene atmosphere now. Service staff was retained from previous staff. Bone on catfish should be cooked through. The way you know it's cooked is when the meat slides off the bone. When it doesn't come off easy, it ain't cooked. Once upon a time when Whiteys was serving sharpies they could do that. Now it's big catfish. You can still cook the bigger ones for a satisfying meal but you must score the sides to allow it to cook evenly. Disappointed would be an understatement. Eight of us arrived via boat and dined outside. We were greeted by a kind server. We ordered drinks but were never offered water. Several of us shared an entree and apps. Our drinks took quite a while to arrive and our food came out at sporadic times. My husband and I were fine with our meal before the others entrees were brought out. We're were told we couldn't order a fish sandwich if dining outside. How is that possible? Atmosphere is good, location is good, parking is an absolute nightmare, particularly on the weekend evenings. People are parking half a mile down the road and walking. Parking is so willy-nilly. The music is nice, the atmosphere is cool, the food is OK, it's not great, it's not terrible, it's just OK. They're selling the atmosphere not the food. We come here, maybe once every six months to listen to some music and hang out with some friends. I'm sure we'll continue to do so although after the last Parking debacle Ware, it took me 25 minutes to find a parking space driving in circles, I'm seriously rethinking it. read more

Visited for the first time since they reopened. The service was decent and the food was amazing! The updated menu is largely good changes with a lot of great Cajun seafood options added. It also felt a bit more clean (positive) and they cut back on a lot of the decor (positive or negative). We will absolutely keep going back. The reason for removing two stars is the menu reductions went a bit overboard. Whiteys was a great option for fried menu items and a large number of those are gone, including the loaded chips which were my favorite item from the menu. They still have the same house made chips so how hard could it be to keep that as a menu option. Bring back the loaded chips!! read more

The food...while very good, I wish there were some specialty dishes that aren't spicy, or at least optional on the spice. The grits are no longer savory. They're sweet grits, with a bit of spice. I will not order them again. The fish dip, crab cakes, and low country pasta were delicious. They definitely need larger glasses for beverages, especially in Florida heat, and with the addition of so many spicy dishes. I believe they had to refill my glass about 6 times! Fried seafood can be hit or miss, but they nailed it. Light and fluffy breading, no oiliness, perfect seasoning. My fish sandwich was perfect. Very friendly waitress and quick service. I was surprised how fast our food was delivered. The location is the absolute best part. It's on a creek with docks and boats. The decorating inside is super cool. I really loved the ambiance. It's too bad my dad is moving away, because I'd come here every time I was in town. Based on my experience, I'm genuinely surprised they have 3.6 stars. RIP Whiteys, it's been a month or so since you were sold. I know new ownership and new management can be a learning curve, but it really is a shame to see you go. By that I mean close, it's only a matter of time. I get it, the new ownership wants to demolish the restaurant and build condos, show a loss and no one stands in your way. Way more money with condos . Just dont insult loyal patrons We've always been by boat (I mean river city and all). Dock is always closed! We travel with a dog so the dock seating is perfect. We were told we can sit on the dock but no one will serve us. The dog is allowed at the tiki bar area. So we moved. Server at tiki area said" welcome to whiteys, my name is ******* I will be taking care of you. I'll allow the dog but keep him clear of any isles so we can walk around him. Can I get you a drink " RIP whiteys, open the fing dock and it was never an issue. Also, food is good for a FISH CAMP, as always, but not fine dinning. I think the new ownership are hoping for failure so the county allows the proposed condos. Such a great loss. Won't be back, food is better and they welcome dogs at Outback, same price nowadays. Side note. Ask about packing the place out on Thursday nights for the working man's fishing tournament. . Shutting that down too, or making it not worth fishing. RIP. Came here with my boyfriend's family because his nana loves the fish sandwiches here. The sandwich was pretty good, very crispy, almost like a chicken sandwich. I had the shrimp scampi which was also pretty good, pretty standard shrimp scampi, they did not cheap out on the shrimp, but the noodles were quite broken up. The fries were solid and calamari was soft and crispy. If you love fish sandwiches you'll have to come here. We sat inside but they also have outdoor seating by the water which is pretty cool. We waited at least 15 minutes, but no one came over to take our drink order, so we left (kids have to be at school tomorrow). We visited this week for the first time since the management changed. We love to come by boat and enjoy appetizers, dinner, and happy hour drinks. We are sad to learn that our Boat US discount is no longer accepted. This was always a big draw. My favorite potato skins is no longer on the menu as is Whitey's fish sandwich. We love the atmosphere here but I don't think we will be visiting as often. Maybe give it time and see if they correct some things. I'd gladly trade your new glasses and real silverware for some potato skins! read more

My experience with local eateries overlooking the water with the word "fish" in their names, has up til now ,been overwhelmingly positive. What's better on an 100 degree day than a light healthy meal served at a beautiful location? The location is nice enough and if you can get a table under the thatched umbrellas on the dock, you definitely should. My disappointment began the moment the waitress handed us our menus. Almost everything is fried. No shrimp or seafood salad, no shrimp skewers over rice with pineapple not even a shrimp cocktail. There was however multiple fried shrimp selections ( but not a coconut shrimp alas) , fried cod and shaddock. Every section, all fried food. Since the child with us was hungry , we stayed and he had the kids fish. Yup fried. One piece with chips. Soda is free but kid size milk is an extra dollar. I ordered a side of cheese grits and they weren't bad. The waitress brought my drink with a plate underneath, not bothered by the fact that I was wearing all white and my drink was a mess of chocolate. Mudslides is my go to drink when it's really hot outside and never do I get them like this The only reason I would ever come back to this place is to have drinks with friends and sit outside. Fairly decent and reasonable seafood restaurant. They offer plenty of variety for all tastes. I really love the wasabi aïoli sauce. It goes great with the blackened shrimp or your french fries. You'll need to ask for a side of it. I had a pretty decent mahi sandwich that I'd probably order again. It can get loud in the main dinning room so I'd recommend getting a seat outside if you're looking for a quieter dinner. All in all a decent place. read more
