Life is full of surprises, like finding sushi at an airport in Chicago! I've flown around the world and would expect to find a sushi bar at Narita Airport in Japan or at Incheon Airport outside of Seoul, but finding one smack dab in the middle of Chicago O'Hare was totally unexpected since I'd traveled through O'Hare on numerous occasions and had to settle for the processed and fried food fare typical of most airport food courts. Since I had a three-hour layover, I decided to try Wicker Park Seafood and Sushi Restaurant. To begin, the decor and ambience is upscale and stylish. The sushi case is plainly visible to all and displays the freshness and quality of the seafood. I requested to be seated at the sushi bar and was immediately greeted by my waiter, Chris, who provided me with an explanation of the items on the menu and described what some of the other diners were eating. Chris was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, a definite plus. This helped me decide that I wanted to try one of the house specialties, the "Teishoku Matsu" a sushi assortment of nigiri (tuna, yellow tail, salmon, white tuna, tamago, unagi and shrimp) with a California roll. The price, $29, was a bit high, but beat having to spend $15 for processed pasta with a canned marinara sauce at a sub-par Italian restaurant in the food court. The Teishoku dish was served with either miso soup or a house salad. Instead, I asked Chris if I could replace the house salad with the Seaweed salad. Without hesitation, Chris obliged and returned with one of the best Seaweed salads I've ever had. The Seaweed salad, accented with daikon and sesame seed, makes for a meal by itself. I ordered a 20 oz. glass of Sapporo (on tap) to wash it all down. In addition, there were at least 6 sushi chefs, all Japanese and speaking in Japanese! Not that I'm against non-Japanese sushi chefs, but I lived in Japan for three-years and it provides a certain level of confidence when you believe that the chef preparing your sushi may have studied under a master chef somewhere in Shibuya or the Ginza. Finally, as I looked around the sushi bar and restaurant, I observed a number of Japanese clients. This seemed to serve as a testament to the notion that even the Japanese travelers passing through O'Hare knew a good thing when they saw it. Is Wicker Park the best sushi restaurant around? Not by a long shot. But it is establishing a trend in fine dining at airports and setting the bar higher to meet sophisticated travelers' expectations. Wicker Park Seafood and Sushi. I thought the design was very sleek and interesting. The food and service were okay. I would definitely lower food expectations for this restaurant. I am not an expert on sushi, but I have had better. For the price, I couldn't complain. The prices were reasonable. For being a bar/restaurant, I would think service would be much better. They seemed lost and neglectful at times. However, I would say this is a good option as far as airport restaurants go. I would still choose this place over anything else at O'Hare. I mean Chili's and Johnny Rocket's are some of the competitors at this terminal so sadly this sushi bar is probably the best option. read more

Having sit time in Chicago is becoming more of a pleasant time since trying sushi at Wicker Park ...as a flight attendant I get a discount here.... I don't eat shellfish so ordering sushi can be a chore....I ordered the Hawaiian roll again today in hopes it will be as good as the first time and it was.. Cooked Sushi are served cold. It seems that they are cooked in the AM and just sits there all day for fast service and delivery. Sushi have no flavor and are very bland. Huge disappointment and not mentioned overpriced. Expensive food for poor quality and lack lust service. Service left much to be desired, employees look like they been beaten around as they display not smiles or enthusiasm. Unprofessional staff and just would not recommend anyone to eat here. read more

How many airports can you say outside Japan has a good sushi bar? Not many and this will have to be my favorite. Pricey yet but worth the quality of fish you get. I usually get a roll and sashimi. You can never go wrong with any of their rolls. They are pretty large so don't over order. read more

We fly through ORD a lot. We spend lot of time in the airport. And my son loves sushi. So we stop here a lot. Perfectly chilled Sauvignon Blanc makes the wait a little less painful. The sushi is not bad. Maybe between 3 and 4 stars. It is the shrimp that puts it over to 4 stars. And the last time we were there, my partner ordered the steak salad and both my son and partner were raving about the quality and tenderness of the meat. The service is kind of slow and so if you are in a rush, get the stuff to go and eat on the plane! read more

By far the best food in O'Hare. I know that doesn't say much since O'Hare has absolutely horrible food options - one of the worst airports to be stuck in. But with that aside, the Sushi Bar is actually very good. I was delayed and had time for a seaweed salad and several rolls. They were all good. Periodically it can be crazy busy!! read more

Shockingly good airport sushi. However the setup is really weird - you have to walk behind a bunch of people sitting at the bar with their suitcases sitting behind them...it's just way too tight. Anyway, we got the spicy tuna roll, Spanish dynamite, and the hot something ...we almost got the nigiri sampler but they said it was only 4 pieces for $15! Ridiculous. I also got the seaweed salad. I thought the Spanish dynamite was amazing. The ponzu sauce really brought the whole thing together. Everything else was good but nothing special. read more

The sushi is always fresh and fabulous, Wicker Park Seafood & Sushi is a go to stop in O'hare airport. If you can sit at the bar and speak to Salvador. He will have you cracking up and he puts so much effort into making sure that you have a fantastic time there, despite all the stress surrounding airport travel! He would go out of this way to make sure you have a great experience in the restaurant and with the food, he is an amazing asset to the restaurant and you can tell that he loves his work. Sushi was just okay but definitely not worth the price tag. The roll I got fell fell apart the second it was picked up and the fish was not super flavorful. I also got the bulgogi, which was tasty but cold. The service was nice and they were quick even though it was starting to get busy when I arrived. I might consider giving it another shot only if it weren't so expensive. read more

Had a fantastic experience here this week. I was on a layover in terminal B and looking for somewhere to eat and do some work on the laptop while I waited for the next flight. I am gluten free, and was pleased to find out that they have gluten free soy sauce, though no dedicated gluten free menu. I ordered the basics: a Philadelphia roll and a spicy tuna roll. My server informed the manager that I was gluten free, and the manager delivered my food, and wanted me to know that the cooks had wiped down the boards, changed gloves, and used clean spoons and tongs to make my food. Absolutely wonderful experience and I will definitely visit again the next time I'm there! read more

I stupidly decided to try this place again, since I had a delay. Even walked over from Terminal 1. Oops. Should've walked another 500 feet down to Johnny Rocket's. As other reviews here will attest, the staff doesn't care if you live or die. It's happened here before: i sit down and practically have to flap my arms for ten minutes before anybody says, "Oh, a live body, maybe he wants to order food." One server noticed me and mouthed the words, "Be right there," then never came by. After close to those ten minutes had gone by tonight, I was literally out of my seat and about to split. I've learned from previous visits, DO NOT just order a drink and figure on ordering food when your drink shows. Order everything NOW. The food is okay, not amazing. The rice always has that melted together look of grocery store sushi, not terribly fresh, while the fish itself IS fresh. I do a lot of sushi, so I can honestly say, this place is just average. Their plastic chopsticks are so big, they're unwieldy. I would give it better marks except the service sucks. One gal, her only job is to seat people, and STILL a line formed, with plenty of space available. Forget a sense of urgency, how about just a sense of, we'd like people to come back? I dined here for lunch today waiting for my connection home, and I was prepared to kind of rip this place in this forum. However the excellent service generously afforded to me by my server Karen and Assistant Manager Valerie, changed my perspective. The main problem was that I ordered the Soba Noodle lunch deal. Over 30 minutes later Karen informed me that the chef had still not started my lunch. I mean I am at an airport. People usually don't have a lot of time. It was busy but not too busy. And people everywhere were getting food. So in frustration I asked for my check and was prepared to go elsewhere. It was then that both of these fine ladies provided me with a complimentary jumbo shrimp cocktail. And I must say, this spot makes one of the best. These ladies aren't paid enough. This place was surprisingly good. Shared a Teriyaki Chicken roll and a Hot Night roll with my daughter. Both were above average for airport sushi. It's a little off the beaten path; over by F and G. If you have some time and are looking for a light meal at O'hare this is a great choice. read more

Wow! Great sushi place in the Chicago Airport! I know it sounds like something you shouldn't do, like gas station sushi or something, but this place is beautiful and has great service and sushi. My husband and I ordered 4 rolls while we were on a 5 hour layover. At noon the place was slowly starting to fill up, but we got seated right away. The food took about 15 mins to come out, which is acceptable for sushi, and boy was it beautiful! One of the rolls was a lobster roll, and it came out with the lobster tail decorating the plate. Very nice presentation! If you have a couple of hours to spare, I highly recommend this place! Airport sushi isn't scary, hey... the fish has to fly in from somewhere, might as well eat it right as it lands!! read more

So i've been out of Chicago for about three years now (sad face) but i fly home quite a bit and stopped by here waiting for my ride. Service was really fast but the sushi was just .. regular. I mean i can get the same sushi at any place. I order the spicy tuna and i think the philly and honestly it wasn't any extrordinary. But it was expensive. It's classy and very chic looking though. Those that spend lots of time in O'Hare know that it sorely lacks good dining options and that you're generally left with fast food courts, kiosks, or the vastly overrated tortas from Frontera. But, in comes Wicker Park, with its sprawling and modern spot in between Concourse B and the wing that generally serves the smaller regional jets. I've walked by several times, but had never had a long enough layover there to consider it until recently. Wicker Park is everything that the other options in this Terminal are not...clean, hip, comfortable, and inviting. Unfortunately, it only serves as a facade for very subpar sushi and other Japanese fare with an airport restaurant pricetag. Trust me, I'm not some California sushi snob that thinks that you can only get good stuff if you're within three blocks of the coast. My early days were spent eating sushi at a converted Dairy Queen in Southern Indiana, and some of my favorite joints in the States are in Denver (I do notice the irony in that last statement). Clearly, you can get the good stuff anywhere they can ship in the fish (and that would seem to include airports, eh?) The stuff that was dished out here didn't even stand-up to grocery store quality. I didn't have a ton of time, but grabbed a roll and an order of sake nigiri. Although edible, the fish had that grey-ish tinge with a dry and chewy texture that was by no means on par with the price point. This was also the case for the tuna that surrounded the $18 roll. Granted, sitting at the bar here is a decent alternative to being wedged in between tipsy businessmen and the dudes doing shots while waiting for their Southwest flight to Vegas in the tiny "sports bars" that clutter this concourse...but next time, I'll probably keep walking. read more

Probably the best airport food at O'hare and likely among the top airport restaurants in the country. When I have an hour to connect via chicago I usually stop here - the Spanish dynamite roll is the bomb. The miso soup is good. The green tea tiramisu is likely the best I have had so far. If your are traveling for work, all of this can be done in $45 - a amount that falls within most expense policies. A definite stop for anyone looking for a meal at O'hare. read more

Nice looking place in the airport, looks clean, sushi I would say was above average. Got a terrible mojito, when they server saw I didn't like it he didn't come over by me at all, he just stayed away. The busser came by and asked if it was someone else's drink, told him it was mine but that it was really bad, he just said sorry to hear that and didn't offer anything in replacement. The food itself was good, quick and overall seemed on par with most upscale sushi restaurants just the service was lacking when it came to overall service. I was in terminal three and asked the guy at the information booth if there was any sushi about. He said, "There might be some nearby, but if you have some time, you might want to walk over to terminal two." I had some time, and he was right. I had just a couple simple things (tuna nigiri and a tuna roll (the roll was VERY generous)), but the fish was quite fresh and perfect. There are tables with electricity for laptops etc. The waitstaff are very friendly. The only two issues I had were the telephone-pole sized chopsticks and the plane which took-off over the place while we were eating (see pictures I'll upload when the damn wifi works). read more

The sushi itself was OK, if a bit uninspired. The fish was not particularly fresh, which surprised me. I was hoping that a high end sushi bar in O'Hare would have fresh flown in fish I am all in favor of Sushi restaurants having low sodium and gluten free soy sauce available. Both are significant dietary restrictions. However, not having traditional soy sauce available at all is really not OK. There's no way to get the correct flavor balance with low sodium soy sauce. read more

Sitting here at the bar for the last 30 minutes. This place is busy and it's a good high paying trade so a great business! The staff is mostly Asian, mix of Pinoy, Chinese and Malay I think. The food is ok.. Nothing to write home about.. But what I was startled with is the hygiene.. I think it's pretty bad.. The plates come out and the women rub them with these cloths.. .. The new plates are all wet so they drain them into this box and then wipe them with these tissues that sit on the sideboard.. Multiple plates with the same tissues... Yuck! Then they arrange the food on these plates and off it goes!! Service was good and prompt but I wouldn't go back and I hope I don't have any digestion issues as a result of the plate handling. read more

Terminal 2 seems to get the weakest group of restaurants. Wicker was to be the highlight. The facility is very nice. The rest is different levels of OK. The service is perfunctory with sushi to match. The rice has no real flavor. Why is it that even what's supposed to be the nice places don't have a decent amount of vinegar seasoned flavor in the rice. The rice for the nigiri is the right amount, but it's compressed to supermarket level. Ugh. The fish is good, but certainly not pristine. There's sushi chef's that look like the real deal, but the sushi is pedestrian. After a few nigiri, we went for what's described as a traditional tuna roll, yet it's still done inside out American style. We got a spider roll. Oops. Once you add the mayo and other bland fats, you can't taste the ingredients properly. The miso soup was decent, but not special. The one shining light is the sake list, although it appears that they only carry a selection of what's on the list. Our first choice was not available. Lunch was just over $100. Horrible service serving grocery store sushi! It was not fast, and my server forgot my edamame. When I asked him to remove it from my bill when my sushi came, he copped an attitude with me and said he could bring it still and I declined. He never checked on me again (no drink refills l, no bill). I had to stand at the exit for 10+ minutes and ask for my bill 3 times so I could catch my flight. read more

Overpriced like most airport restaurants. Food was just ok, service was nothing great. Biggest issue is watching them prepare the food! One fish has salmonella the rest of the dishes will as they use their cover hands to hold the fish and then the same hand to grab from the large rice bin! I watched one large piece of fish sit uncovered and un-chilled for at least 30-45 minutes while they prepared someone's dish beside it. I won't eat here again. read more

There are not too many food options at ohare and none compare to the Wicker Park Seafood & Sushi. With great sushi and Friendly staff they should be your go to place when you have time before a flight. It isn't a cheap place but you get a great quality meal and a relaxed atmosphere. Try the specialty rolls for a twist on some classic maki. read more
