Even though we'd been to Wiechec's for fish fry since my first review five years ago, it was for fish fry and everyone knows Wiechec's is a great fish fry place. I'm back here now to Yelp what a wonderful place Wiechec's is for a Friday nght fish fry for a table of 12. Okay, not all of us got the fish fry, but the point is, if you ever tried to reserve a table for 12 people for a Friday fish fry, you will understand our gratitude to Wiechec's for accomodating us. Service was efficient and friendly. Our table(s) were waiting when we got there. A few people got the pierogies and onions, a couple got the French dip. I got the fish sandwich. My only issue with it was it was easily twice the size I'd had in mind for a "fish sandwich." I ate the fish (excellent) and cole slaw and some of the fries. read more

They use to have excellent fish frys. The one I just ate was literally tasteless. It was a beer battered fish. But had dark brown burn marks on one side. It had to be warmed on a cookie sheet pan. Never go there again. Another legend dies in Buffalo Fish Fry Hall of Fame. read more

I was in the mood for a top-of-the-line fish fry, and both Google and Reddit pointed me to Wiechec's. The bar/restaurant sits in a decent part of the East Side, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. The place has that classic, old-school Polish Buffalo vibe -- salty, worn-in, and full of character. We ordered the breaded fish, beer-battered fish, and one of each pierogi. The fish dinners came with potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, and rye bread. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING was the best version of itself I've ever had. Cooked perfectly, full of flavor, and clearly made with care. What a hidden gem. Oh, and $3 pints of Labatt Blue to wash it all down? Perfect. Stopped in for the afternoon Bill's game! Usually have great food but it was different this time. My daughter liked her taco was a nice size but the roast beef I got was dry beef was tender but wasn't dipped in any juice and the horseradish had no flavor! I almost but ketchup on it which is a no no for me . One of the chicken wings the drumstick had half of the meat gone they shouldn't have put it on the plate looked like the cook didn't care! The people at the bar were regulars and us 2 women at the end of the bar were unfazed by us at the bar there was a guy would high five the 8 people there on a good play making us feel like we weren't even there very unfriendly to us first time I felt like that during a sporting event with alcohol involved Usually everyone joins in. Met some friends tonight for fish fry's. The temperature outside was-4. Inside the fish fry's were hot and delicious. The potato, macaroni salad and slaw were house made and the fries were crispy. Nice attentive staff and the draught beer had a nice clean taste. No matter how cold it is outside, this long time tavern is worth bundling up for. read more

Highly recommended!!! On our way heading to OH after amazing tour of the Niagara Falls. Found out this by chance and tried the soups of tomato and corn, ordered fish and chips and the beef sandwich also. WOW, every single item tastes so good! Those fishes reminds me of our experience in the UK. Though we had experience of great fish and chips plus Scottish beef sandwich, this wonderful experience in such a small town is an eye-opening to us! Great place for a fish fry, especially if you are hankering for it on a day other than Friday. They are serving a great fish fry daily. Fish was delicious ... a very large piece with plenty of sides. Fries, slaw, potato salad and macaroni salad ... you will not leave hungry! Service was very good! Waitress was nice and attentive. Ambiance is no thrills with a very big bar area and plenty of tables to handle the lunch crowd... though I'm guessing things get much busier during fish fry season. Photos can't show how massive their portions are which I'm glad hasn't changed, this place has been in Buffalo forever & that's one thing our city is known for. Wiechec's is an old polish tavern that has been around for years & is known especially for their fish fry's, wings, etc. They don't have corned beef everyday of the year but my coworkers and I update each other almost everyday around this time of year on when they'll have it. Beer battered fish and home made sides very good. Large portions, hot, crispy. Fish served on top of fries. No half serving offered. Service was adequate, not friendly. Served quickly as the establishment had few patrons mid afternoon. We were able to park on the side street right near the side door. This is where the stars get taken away. Polish tavern, terrific. I expect clean. I don't mind old. I do mind the appearance and feel of being unclean. The side entryway made me want to turn around and leave, but since we drove a distance, and had heard this is the best fish fry in town, we went in. Inside, the dining room was dark and dingy. Bar area is brighter with front window. Place needs an overhaul...floors, dining room furnishings, etc. I sceeved it and immediately used hand sanitizer after sitting down. No complaints about the meal ( however I did not see the kitchen) but I will not return or recommend this tavern for the other reasons. I was embarrassed having taken my friend there. It's definitely a great spot for a fish fry! The fish fry was huge came with fries, Cole slaw, potatoes salad, and macaroni salad! The fish and sides were all very good. My only suggestion would be a bigger plate. The fish was thrown on top of all sides. It was very hard to eat, and the fish became soggy. I ordered the seafood gumbo soup to go with the hot pepper burger. The soup was absolutely delicious. The burger was a fail for me. It felt like a frozen beef patty. The patty was too large for the roll. The burger had NO seasoning. It was a bland burger patty with one pepper stuck on it and cheese and was way under cooked for MY liking. Wiechec's Lounge is a legend. A long time ago, there was a couple named Rose and Henry who took over a simple bar. They offered an extended food menu and great hospitality to the local community. The Family continues to feed loyal customers and everyone who craves a comforting home cooking style meal. Their fish fry is famous nationwide. I knew we should give it a try before Lent ended. Four of us headed to Kaisertown on Friday early evening. Man! This place was packed. The waiting time was around an hour. There was no hostess besides sheets of paper hanging on the wall covered with names. Just sign in and have a drink, or not. The bar area was loaded with people. After ordering our first round of beer, we managed to take over one of the two big tables located there. We ended up skipping the waiting list by having our meal out of the dining room. The negative side about being in the bar area was not being able to easily hear each other because of the noise. Also, our table was covered with a strange looking 'patina'. I'm not a wimp, but basic paper mats would help in general. Our server was young and energetic. I really liked her attitude. She was helping without being pushy. Four beer battered fish fries came at the same time. Yes, the portions were huge and I was already full from drinking beer. Suddenly it felt like a challenge. Don't listen to me, but I think our fish were too greasy. One of us took the batter off and enjoyed thick, flaky fish without it. My fish was the smallest, but its color was actually the best, not as dark as the rest on the table. The coleslaw was too sweet and didn't have enough crunch or vinegar. We all thought it's definitely a side not made in the house, but we were wrong. According to our server, only tartar sauce (obviously) and potato salad wasn't from Wiechec's kitchen, which was also on the sweet side. The macaroni salad needed just some extra pepper to be perfectly delicious. The fries were fine. In general, it was quite an experience. This place is 'An Old Buffalo Tradition'. I'm glad I finally visited, because this restaurant was on my list for too long. read more

I wish I could give this place 4 or 5 stars but it was just not worth the hype. I will admit that I got take out so perhaps eating in the restaurant would be a better experience but I was not impressed. Ordering over the phone was a breeze. Someone answered right away and was friendly over the phone. Picking up was a different experience. It was crowded and I was wearing a mask and just didn't seem to be welcomed. No one else is as wearing a mask, including staff (just a heads up). The bartenders were not welcoming and seemed more worried about talking to each other than me. I live about 10-15 mins from this place so getting home to eat my food did not take long. The first problem I had was that they use packaged tartar sauce. 2nd problem I had was that they use styrofoam that does not have individual sections so my wet macaroni salad and potato salad completely soaked my fries and the bread. Disappointing. Overall I rate this 3/5. As I said maybe having a fresh fish fry in the restaurant might make this better but it's just an average meal to me. read more

I got beer battered of course. It came with a generous portion of macaroni salad, potato salad, coleslaw and French fries. It was fabulous!! Let's just say no one went home hungry!! I am not one for a lot of the mayo based salads, but I enjoyed the macaroni salad. French fries were good. The other people I was with enjoyed the coleslaw. I really liked this restaurant/bar. My party and I ate in the back part, early dinner. Two of us had the beef on weck. It was a pretty thick cut. Round salt pellets on bun like you'd see on a pretzel. It was pretty good. Basket of curly-q fries was huge. We got the large and shared amongst 4 people. Son had the Greek burger. Get the wings medium extra saucy. But best of all (unless you're people that don't love good chicken sandwiches as much as me) is the amazing cajun chicken sandwich, which is healthy and juicy and so incredibly tasty and spicy (especially if you ask for extra Cajun like I do), and one of the best sandwiches in Buffalo. Their steak sandwich is nearly as good as the Cajun Chicken, and their Beef on Weck is fantastic too. I can't get past the incredible Cajun Chicken. Nomnomnom. People don't realize how great the food is at this little tavern, or many of the other taverns and pubs in Buffalo, more so than in the vast majority of other cities. The local foods up here make me really grateful (and really fat), and this is one of the best. And try Apollo on South Park (for Chicken Souvlaki), Alethea's (for Sponge Candy), Imperial Pizza (for pizza and medium wings), for just some of the amazing local tastes Buffalo has to offer. I've never been into girls that get high all the time. I know one too many of these "Weed Chicks". And for some reason all the weedchicks hang out at this bar. Hence the name Weedchicks. While visiting Buffalo recently, we had to get roast beef and a fish fry right away. I had roast beef on bread with French fries and gravy. As good as you could imagine. My wife got a fish fry, which was a typical fish fry in Buffalo. Big piece of fish, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad and fries. At 2 pm on a Wednesday. Had lived in Buffalo the first 30 years of my life but had never been here. Several people I spoke with said that it was one of the best fish frys around, which is saying a lot considering how many good fish fry places there are there. Service was quick and waitress was very nice. The atmosphere is that of a typical Buffalo corner bar, which is fine with me. Next trip up we'll definitely be back. read more

We came on Friday at 4:30 and were fortunate to be seated immediately. My wife and I shared a bowl of seafood gumbo. It was heaping full of shrimp sausage okra rice etc. This is about the best seafood gumbo in Western New York but I believe they only have it on fridays. We also each ordered a fish fry, fried. The fish was excellent as were the ample portions of potato salad, Mac salad, and French fries. On Fridays they are so busy that you can't substitute some other Potato for the fries. We did find out that they have fish fries every day and on days other than Friday you are allowed to substitute mashed potatoes or whatever they have. The ambience is a buffalo Corner Bar straight out of the '50s. Our server was friendly and accommodating. They used to be cash only but now do take credit cards although there is a service charge for using one. This was an excellent overall experience. read more

While in Buffalo, I had a meal w/ some old friends. They chose Wiechec's. What do I know, I was in. Cool, old school Buffalo bar/restaurant w/ a Polish flare....the kind that used to be on every neighborhood street corner in town. Yes, this was on a corner as well. We started in the bar. Good selection of draft beers and they're pretty cheap. It's a place where everyone seems to know each other. After an extended period of time, we managed to get a table for our group. Menu was big. They're known for their fish fry's and I'm told during Lent, the line is usually out the door. I ordered the pierogi plate (three large potato pierogies w/ slaw, mac salad, potato salad and fries...HUGE meal). My daughter had a pork chop special and got gumbo soup w/ it. She raved about the soup and the pork chops were thick and perfectly cooked on the grill. Somehow they tasted like steak...crazy good. My meal was very good as well. I couldn't finish it all. Just a heads up...the place only accepts cash, no cards. Parking apparently is always a bit dicey, but it was in the evening and we just parked across the street at the school. Arguably and factually the best fish fry in the buffalo area. This fish fry is your epitome of buffalo fish fry's. Not only is it humongous but it's also extremely reasonable. The fish fry is the best value I have seen out of any fish fry. The fish fry itself is delicious and it's coupled with a whopping amount of sides. I have gone several times for fish fry's at Wiechec's and with 20+ parties on the waitlist during lent they still manage to get you seated within the hour even at 7pm. The service is efficient and fast. If you don't feel like waiting at all for a seat then you can venture over to the bar and order your fish fry there. The ambiance is a classic kaisertown pub, lots of bar seating, a small open restaurant area and very casual. A buffalo classic and a place everyone needs to try for a Lenten fish fry. read more
