Paying in cash, I said to the cashier that, since they keep the credit card fee, could they just round off the penny. The negative reply blew up into an exchange wherein I was ultimately berated by an intrusive staffer saying that cash paying customers lose them money and, by asking for that penny, I was asking for a discount. Finishing with a supercilious smirk, she said SHE'd give me the penny. It's ok, I replied. I won't be back. Seriously. They clearly don't need the $3,000+ annually I've been dropping in there for the past several years. Perhaps they need to weed out customers? I'll be more than happy to oblige. read more

Don't want to be overly philosophical here, but all things change over time as is the case with this store, its employees, and their attention to customers. I have frequented this store for 20+ years, not because it was close to my home but because of the knowledgeable and polite people who worked there. The current workforce appears to have been hired simply because they have a pulse. They certainly DO NOT HAVE any knowledge when it comes to bird species in/around Santa Fe or their feeding preferences. They stand behind the cash register awaiting you arrival and money and appear to be unaffected or concerned about your needs. I've taken the time this weekend to research other businesses in Santa Fe for my seed purchases and discovered a couple of unlikely and unexpected businesses (including big box stores) with a great selection of wild bird seed at prices considerably lower than WBU, sometimes 50% less. Suggest you spend some time shopping around as I have. Stores with high prices and minimum wage employees lacking knowledge of their inventory and an unwillingness to assist me is not where I want to spend my money. Period. read more

This is a great little store, with amazing customer service. I bought a big bag of birdseed that was recommended for the birds in my area, but the just weren't eating it. I went in the store, was helped by Jay and they have me free tallow and a stand. Hopefully the birds will be attracted to it and then eat the seeds! Again, fabulous customer service. read more

This store has it all (except last time I went, they had no unshelled peanuts). The staff is very knowledgeable and answered my questions. The sales person I spoke with even gave me good advice about my wild bird questions. I got a colored page with all the wild birds I should see during the month. Good reasons to return. read more

When we moved to the area we thought it would be fun to set up a bird-feeding station. Fortunately, we discovered WBU and got started with their "Basic Setup" system of a vertical pole with two arms. We bought a tray feeder, some bagged seed, and got started. Several years later we have gradually added hummingbird feeders, ant traps, more cylinder and suet feeders, and three birdbaths. The birds love our habitat and throngs of them arrive all day to feed. Everything we purchase at WBU is of the best quality and the staff is super-knowledgeable about everything relating to local birds. We probably spend $400 a year on bags of seed, seed cylinders, and suet cakes. We feed year round and one of our birdbaths has a plug in heater so it never freezes. When I had problems setting it up, I simply returned it to the store and they cheerfully exchanged it for one already fully assembled. This is par for the course, customer service is always top-notch at WBU. Edit June 2014 - The heated birdbath failed again last winter. I mentioned that one day when I was in the store. They told me the birdbath has a 2-year warranty and advised me to bring it back. I did so and they extended a store credit which I will use for a new heated birdbath next fall. They won't be carrying the same brand again and will let me choose a new one when the fall/winter stock arrives. This is truly GREAT customer service and has made me an even more faithful customer. Edit January 2015 - I used my store credit to purchase a new heated birdbath, so far it's working perfectly. Birds really need water in the winter, it's good to have this resource for them. If you think you might have fun feeding birds, by all means try this excellent store. Get on their electronic and snail-mail notification lists for their frequent sales. We recently received a bird feeder as a present, but had none of the hardware that we needed to safely attach it to a tree or a pole, had no seed, etc. My wife mentioned that she had been thinking of getting a birdbath as well, so we decided to go and check out our options. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, and they had absolutely everything that we needed. For example, they were able to explain the different types of seed and which birds they would attract, and also warned us about how some of the materials for the birdbaths could crack in extremely cold weather so that we could pick one that would work for us and the seasons we wanted to leave it out. We now have dozens of birds visiting our backyard on a regular basis, and our one year old son loves seeing all of them. I'm headed back soon to investigate other options, like suet or a thistle feeder. Extremely highly recommended. read more

To whom it may concern While this is certainly Santa Fe's best aviary supply house there are things they are not telling you. What is it you may ask? Nidification! It is happening all around you without your knowing! Unless of course you go outside and look around. I know it's hard to pull your self away for the pad, but give it a try, you'd be amazed. You can observe a lot by just looking (Yogi Berra). Don't be alarmed, as I've learned this is a seasonable "thing" and will soon pass. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.
