Beautiful, delicious, fresh salmon, and a wide selection of other seafood. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and the King Salmon was amazing.

Coho salmon after a 2 hour cure.

These guys are great. I frequently stop by and grab a dozen oysters for shooters, or get some salmon to cure (they have so many options and the quality is excellent). The staff are very knowledgeable and always make the best recommendations. I've been going here since the 90s for a reason. Top notch.

Beautiful color on these wild salmon

Thank you! That's truly the only way to start off this review! The guys were great! I had never been and just wanted to look at everything available. I went around 10:00am on a Sunday which is a little risky in my opinion. To my delight they still had plenty of great cuts available! I said I would be grilling the fish and the piece he was going to give me unfortunately didn't have the skin on, which was cool in my mind. No biggie really. But he insisted if I was going to grill it to get a piece from the back with the skin on. So sweet! Truly loved the service. It's close so I'll definitely be going back to support them!

Unlike other "seafood markets " in the Yelp search this is actually a Market! Most others are restaurants wrongfully categorized

Outstanding selection of seafood. It is the only place on the south side that has live, whole lobsters.

I love this place. They have the most delicious, fresh salmon and halibut. This is the only store where I buy fish.

I've been coming here for a few years now and then I left the city but whenever I do come back, I make sure to make a pit stop here. Why? Work is right next door to it. So that helps. But also, I feel like the veggies and fruits here are fresh, crisp, and tastier than other places. However... I do feel like prices are a bit higher than last time I was here a couple of months ago. They have parking in the back. It's small and getting in and out alive is a miracle each time. But it exist. If you elect to park on the street, parking enforcement is out everywhere and so be weary. I like their hot bar and salad bar. Always a rotation of items that keeps it busy interesting over time. What I don't think they are good for is snacks. Sometimes I just want something simple and not healthy and this place ain't it. I think this place is better for medium size shops.

The water dispenser for water bottles had the highest pressure that I've seen one had, which was cool. Chocolate chip cookies have the classic homemade taste to them. I don't think I have seen more beautiful blooms anywhere else! I love that it was heavily focused on local small businesses, farmers, and FOOD. We stopped for a few bites along the way and were blown away every time. So good. This market is huge and stretches for a few blocks, so be sure to come early and give yourself ample time to explore. Also, with it being in Ballard, there are a ton of cool, hipster shops to browse while you're in the area.

Subsequently, I lost some interest since I don't live nearby. While I was in Ballard on a recent Sunday, I rushed to the market to see if it was still open. Officially, it was not; they closed at 2pm. But they were still packing up. I believe they are not allowed to sell after the official closing time; I asked one vendor, they declined. The staff wants the streets to reopen as soon as possible. As I walked the two blocks, several vendors still have some items on display on their tables. With a bit of wink, wink, accidentally dropping cash on the table and accidentally taking things off the table, I walked away with goodies. I won't say what I bought to avoid anyone getting into trouble. Street parking was easy enough nearby on a Sunday.

There are pros and cons to this market though. One big pro is they have a decent selection of ingredients for Asian dishes. I was making potstickers for friends last month and I got a medium green cabbage for $1.90, a bunch of green onions for $1.99, and a knob of fresh ginger for 12 cents. I also got two packages or potsticker wrappers for $3.99 (they are in the freezer section). I could have bought some of these things cheaper at a different market, but for the convenience of getting it all at one place, it was worth paying a bit more. Another pro is sometimes their prepared food section has some tasty vittles. Recently, I bought a large piece of grilled mackerel for $8.99. It was tasty but boy do you have to watch out for bones! Another pro is they carry the delicious and local Sugimoto brand green tea here and it's a lot quicker to get it here than to drive all the way to Uwajimaya's in the ID. Another pro is the free parking lot! Now, on to the cons. One major con for me is the super loud and irritating music blaring from the speakers. I don't know how the staff keep from going insane listening to this loud music all day long. Another con is sometimes the prepared food section is filled with old and sad looking foods. Like it looks like someone cooked the stuff hours ago and who knows how long it's been sitting there? Another con is I wish there was an actual butcher available to help with the meats. Like, I needed some ground pork but they didn't have it. They had some good-looking sliced pork tenderloin that I could have had them grind up for me like they do at some Asian markets but that wasn't an option. Another con from my fellow Yelpers is it seems that some of the plastic wrapped produce is rotting or molding inside. I don't buy produce here very much so I haven't encountered it yet and I hope I never will. So it's a mixed bag at the HMart in Ballard but I am still glad that it exists.
