We ordered, after tasting a Pinot Grigio and a Sauvignon Blanc, a glass of wine. What the server brought was a pink wine. OK. I don't usually complain. Then, 2 tables who came in after us got their pizza orders as we were still waiting--at least 30". The waitress finally came and said our first had been burned and they put a new one in for us. We had said NOTHING through all of this. When our pizza finally came we asked for it to go. No apologies, no complaints. We had to bake it more when got it home. Ugh. We'll never return. read more

Being from the suburbs of Chicago....I am pretty partial to "Chicago style" pizza.....but I have got to tell you -- the pizza we had at Wild Tomato was definitely one of the top three I have ever had! I dragged my husband to Wild Tomato on a Wednesday evening in July. He wasn't sure why we were electing to have pizza in Door County when we are inundated by pizza places where we live, but I assured him (based off of all the Yelp reviews - thank you!) this pizza was going to be great. And it totally was! When we arrived the place was pretty packed - which was to be expected. They have a really nice outdoor seating area that offers a lot of shade, and we had hoped to sit out there. However, there was a wait to sit outside and immediate seating inside. We sat in. Despite the close quarters inside, I actually enjoyed sitting inside because I sat facing the oven. So, I got to watch the guy tossing the pizza dough around and putting the pizzas in the oven. Our server was pleasant and offered beer suggestions to my husband. Service was attentive and quick, but we never felt rushed. We ordered the Margarita pizza - and I think you should, too. Even the table next to us that ordered the loaded pizza looked over at ours and remarked that maybe they should try a Margarita next time. The reason is simple - the crust, sauce and cheese are awesome (They were a little light handed with the basil). The simplicity of the pizza really lets you taste the elements of the pizza. Wild Tomato is always a big hit on our trips to Door county. We've gotten plain ole cheese, pepperoni, the bbq chicken, the bread basket, and the garden salad. The pepperoni stands out as a favorite, but even their cheese pizza is delicious. The garden salad with ranch is always great too. Their gluten free crust is not the best i've had, but it works. If their gluten free crust was amazing, would definitely be a 5 star. The hibiscus lemonade cocktail is amazing if you are looking to order a drink. If you say Door County, you say Wild Tomato! They go hand in hand. There is more than one Wild Tomato location to check out. My husband and I are frequent visitors to D.C. However, we come when no else does. It is quite and peaceful. The fact that there aren't a lot of tourists in the off season does make it challenging to find restaurants that are open AND have delicious food because there aren't a lot of people so businesses close. The Wild Tomato has solved this dilemma for us! They are open all year round AND have incredible eats! This place is busy for the off season and super, incredibly, freakishly busy during the season. It's worth it. They are most know for their wood fried pizza. The pizza is...ooey, gooey, fantastic. It is doughy in the right places. Not too saucy. Can't go wrong. Yet, everything we have ever had there has been delicious. They have wonderful apps: cheese curds, bread basket, etc. The salads are light and refreshing. My two favs are the cherry walnut and garden salad. They also have burgers, sandwiches, killer mac and cheese, and much more. The brownie sundae is warmed to perfection with yummy ice cream on top. When we are up here, we often hit the Tomato more than once. Pizza one night and sandwiches/salad the next. They have beer in tap and wine available. My husband can't get enough of whatever New Glarius they have. In season, parking can be a doozy. Off season, no biggie. The service is impeccable. Friendly. Professional. Caring. Efficient. Can't say much more than that. Prices a well worth the quality of food you receive. For us visiting DC means visiting the Wild Tomato, once OR twice. read more

While we weren't really in a pizza mood, we followed a recommendation and popped in on a whim. Pretty much a home run! Wood fired pizza with just the right thickness and crunch, and a ton of fun topping suggestions. Obviously my family could not agree so we finally settled on a veggie pizza and added sausage to half. Is that even a thing? It is now. Tons of toppings and flavor. I left feeling full but not comatose. We also tried the apple crisp for dessert. Visiting the Wild Tomato is one thing that I look most forward to on our annual family trek to Door County. I was even more excited this year because I've had a hankering for pizza and I figured this was my best shot at getting a good gluten-free pie! We headed to the restaurant relatively early (5pm) because there's always a substantial wait. We were given a buzzer and told 45 minutes, but we were definitely seated much sooner. That said, they have a walk-up bar where apps and drinks can be ordered while patrons wait. This was a super option with our three children who always seem to act like we haven't fed them for weeks. We got them some bottled root beer and cheese curds to tame the whining and it worked out perfectly. We ordered two salads to start, one petite Door County and a Caesar. The salads are always well-dressed and topped with ample amounts of the good stuff! Honestly, my normal stomach probably would have stopped with the salad, but vacation stomach said "GET THE PIZZA!" My sons and husband shared a plain cheese pizza (ugh, don't get me started on the taste buds of our 7 year old!) and a deluxe. I got the GF deluxe. The boys LOVED their pies. They were hot, fresh, generously topped, and every bit as delicious as we've come to expect! Sadly, our enthusiasm sort of ended there. The GF crust was hardly reflective of the quality normally delivered by WT. The crust of the pizza was burned around the perimeter, but borderline raw dough on the rest of the pizza. The delicious fixins almost made up for the crust, but it wasn't worth it. I ate three pieces and didn't make a stink, but I would never order it again. My husband tried it, made a serious frowny face, and said he was not interested in eating the leftovers. There was some redemption brought by the great server. It was only his second day, but he was totally on point. He knew exactly what he was doing! He listened carefully and was not at all bothered by our list of requests. We also got to pet a dog while we were waiting for our food. They have a dog friendly patio, which provided some awesome entertainment for our little one. This sup-par trip didn't sour us in the least. We are already excited to return next summer, but I'm going to suffer the consequences and eat the regular pizza. The most negative comment is I pre-ordered carry out, drove there, had to park the car, walk IN THE RAIN to the carry out hut, pay the bill and was informed there was a MANDATORY 20% tip added to the bill! Husband and I went with the Sausage & Pesto which also had diced tomatoes on it. So yummy! There was also a pretty decent wine and craft beer selection. They had Epic Big Bad Baptist on tap. That's always a good thing. The indoor seating was quite cozy. A bit closer to other tables than I care for, but it wouldn't prevent me from going back. I've only done take out orders, but the ambiance seems inviting and its nice that they have the pizza oven close by so you can see the pizzas being made. Wish they had more accurate wait times for take out orders (reason for a loss of a star). If the wait for a take out order is truly 2 hours, then that's awesome your business is so busy! However, to arrive early to pick up said take out order after 90 minutes and find its been sitting cold for half an hour is disappointing. So I was already pretty full by the time the pizza came. They do offer to split pizzas in 1/2, but not with the special or margherita. Good to know in advance. We got a great initial reception from our waitress, but then I think she forgot we were there. Offered a carafe of water that never made it to the table.
