Wilmington's front gate. The cemetery's surrounded by freight containers and a trainyard, and noisy streets.

Brandon D. was going through Find-A-Grave when he discovered his grandfather had a twin who died at two months of age and was buried in Wilmington. At the same time many of his Croatian relatives were laid to rest there, and he wanted to find them. So we went for a visit today. Discovered we can't drive onto the little road that goes through the cemetery when a maintenance person nearly collided into us with his truck. He ran over the headstones and yelled that we have to park in the street and walk in. So we did. Gate was open and there are no signs saying vehicles aren't allowed. The grass is mostly dead and splintery and just exposed dirt in several areas. The cemetery is surrounded by railroad tracks and stacked shipping containers. Cranes, engines, and other mechanisms were constantly revving so it's not a particularly peaceful graveyard. Stones that looked to be previously standing are now laying flat in the ground (probably to make it easier for mowing). There were four different men in the office/garage and none could tell us where we might locate the graves we were looking for from the plot numbers we gave them. Ended up spending a couple hours walking around in the sun. Not a lot of shade here. Some of the graves date into the mid-1800s. Notable interments are members of Phineas Banning's family, including several of his children that didn't survive into adulthood. Banning's house is almost a stone's throw from Wilmington Cemetery. The only reason to visit is if you know someone who's here or you're just that interested in the occasional old grave you might see.

During the intake Cynthia walked us very patiently, compassionately, and thoroughly through every detail and aspect of planning mom's services and in coordination with the church and the cemetery. Along the way she was very easy and accessible to communicate with and did her best to modify and accommodate different requests we had. Ramiro and Andres, we couldn't have asked for better staff to work with us during mom's vigil and at graveside. True compassionate genuine professionals. It made our experience everything we hoped for, to honor our mother's life. We would recommend working with this team without any hesitation. Thank you all for your suppprt during this time of loss and transition. During the wake and vigil Ramiro and Andres were especially cognizant and sensitive to any needs of myself and my family and our guests. If water was low they were quick to replenish. They thoughtfully consulted with me and my sister about the timing of closing mom's casket and whether we wanted to see her again at the end of the night privately. At graveside, they walked us through the steps for the pallbearers to carefully transport mom from hearse to vault, and they also offered to help carry mom in case we were short a pallbearer. Same conscientiousness at the church during mass. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the whole team at Funeraria Del Angel Wilmington!
