Captain Tony and Jim navigated our burial at sea for my brother today. Everything went great. Captain Tony made helpful Suggestions where needed. He was also helpful, kind and graceful. They had coffee and refreshments on board for us which was unexpected and even a sound speaker to connect to my iPhone through Bluetooth to play a memorial playlist tribute throughout the trip for my brother. This was a first for Robbie B. While I've heard about having your ashes "spread at sea," I had no idea what actually happens. And now, having been to such a service, I think I want it for myself. A friend died of cancer, he was cremated, and his sister arranged for a memorial service with Beyond the Sea in Long Beach. I have no idea what it cost, but I'd say it was totally worth it. Super easy to find. About 20 of us met at the port in Long Beach, I parked in the Aquarium lot ($3). We boarded a very nice two-story boat with lots of seating, bottled water, coffee, and cookies. The whole trip takes about an hour (twenty minutes to the location, twenty minutes there, and twenty minutes back). A burial permit is required, which Beyond the Sea takes care of for you. Our captains, George and Jim, were thoughtful and compassionate. My friend's sister had purchased an urn made of sea salt, which dissolves in the water as the ashes disburse. She also purchased dissolvable and degradable slips of paper; we all wrote private notes to help my friend's passage. Before the ashes were lowered, she played a voice mail message my friend had left her the night before he died. The ship provided rose petals to send off with the urn. Lots of tears but very beautiful and intimate. The captain provides a certificate with the exact coordinates of where the ashes were lowered if you want to return to the exact spot. After the service, we headed over to the Queen Mary for a private AYCE lunch in one of the smaller banquet rooms. The location in Long Beach is perfect and despite fears of seasickness, I was fine with a Dramamine because the water does not get too choppy. The captain explained the process on the boat and allowed us space to grieve as a family. It was truly a beautiful day (3/22 at 11:30) to say goodbye to my dad. My mom chose to lower the biodegradable urn with the rose petals so I've attached a few pictures so you can see how that's done. He recommended times based on traffic and parking due to the aquarium, and on the day of even warned us to not park at the pier point parking lot since it was already full (due to an event). On the day before the scattering, Captain Tony provided contact information for the team what would be taking care of us, along with directions and parking instructions, and even warned us about protests so we can plan ahead. Captain George and Jim took great care of us on the day of the scattering, and even made some adjustments to accommodate our slight seasickness. We had a wonderful experience for my Dad's burial at sea. Spoke with Captain Tony beforehand. This was my first time looking for a service like this and he explained the process so I knew what to expect and answered all my questions. They were very nice and professional, provided us water, cookies, and coffee for the trip. The boat, Something Special, was very very nice. It provided a cozy and comfortable area for us, a party of 6, to wait along with my Dad's ashes as we made our way out to sea. When we got to the destination, Captain George gave us plenty of time for me and my family to pay our last respects for my Dad. When that was done my Dads ashes were carefully lifted over the Stern, rear, of the boat and slowly released into the sea. The crew prepared my Dad's ashes into a clear container with beautiful rose petals and as my Dad's ashes slowly sank and drifted with the sea, the petals floated providing a simple but beautiful moment.
