The pumpkins and animals are back for the Halloween/Harvest season! Packed parking lot on a Saturday mid afternoon. Small pen with goats, sheep, ducks, & chickens; not too intimidating for little ones. $1 for a small bag of feed at register = plenty of small handful fun and licks. Hungry goats seem aggressive at first but are actually pretty gentle when nibbling grains out of our hands. 5 stars for the wide variety of pumpkins and decent prices (we got over a dozen small smooth ones at $1.49 each, for a pumpkin decorating party). The market itself is open air with roof coverings, and plenty of produce selection but quality seems hit or miss with some items too ripe. It's been really hot lately, but we needed to take the kids to the pumpkin patch to gather decorations. We didn't want to go all the way to Half Moon Bay so we decided to stay local. We liked the fact that there was a corn husk maze that you could walk through for free. It was wide enough for a baby stroller to pass through very slowly. There is also a pretty wide selection of pumpkins and gourds to choose from even though the site is small. There is a free petting zoo for the little kids to enjoy while the big kids are carefully selecting the perfect pumpkin. I like that there is free parking and that you could purchase some groceries on your way out. read more

Best place for local fruits and vegetables at excellent prices. It's my go to for oranges, prickly pears, grapes, lemons, garlic, zucchini etc... The workers know what is fresh and can recommend what is fresh and suits your taste. You just get a feel this is a family operated business that cares about you and the products they offer. Windmill Farms Produce isn't the attraction it use to be. been there, done that. it's probably me. -don't like to pick thru fruit/anything. just a grab and go shopper/eater. -doesn't make sense to buy a few pieces of fruit. doesn't make sense to buy a lot. (since i don't/can't finish them). -there are other attraction but specifics escape me. -unsure of the parking situation also. not sure if lot is there. have good memories, will return someday. read more

Earlier in September, Canadian cherries were running $5.99/lb at Safeway. In the same week, the exact same bags of Canadian cherries were going for $3.99/lb here at Windmill Farms. Need I say more? Plus, my husband loves a good melon, so we have gotten our cantaloupes, honeydews, and watermelons here. I like bags of veggies and can sometimes find a good deal here, though that is more hit-and-miss because they are not always stocked. There is an organic section and there are other baked goods, tortillas, basic kitchen necessities, etc. Reminds me a little bit of the produce store right down the street from where I went to school when I was growing up in El Sobrante. In a day and age where the retail world is being bought out by Amazon, it's nice to be able to stop and shop here. It's the closest thing you can get to a farmer's market year-round. read more

They used to have fresh produce, but over my last 6-7 visits I have noticed that 90% of the time 90% of the produce is expired. Grapes are always bruised and starting to rot. Potatoes have always sprouted when I open the bag. Watermelon is almost always squishy. I won't give them any more chances, but I do hope they go back to the old way. read more

Strictly for pies. The Ripon pie co needs to get it together. Stop making this bland dense pie crust! It's the worst thing you will ever taste and your stomach will hate you if you find a way to eat that crust. It's crazy...I didn't know pie crust could have absolutely 0 taste to it and why is the top of the pie 2 inches thick? It's bone dry and taste like cement. It's the worst thing ever. read more

A produce stand right across In-N-Out! Not noticeable if you're just driving down the street. A good spot if you need some hard to find spices. Found some STAR ANICE here to use to make some homemade pho soup. They also have some exotic fruit like dragon fruit among some others. I bought a crumb apple pie from here but it only lasted maybe 2-3 days. It was good but didn't have enough apples in the pie! The pies are out without air conditioning and not refrigerated. Maybe it's better to get the frozen (unbaked) pie to bake at home. read more

Such a great market that has been in the area for 40 plus years! I found parking easily and was surprised at how large this place is and how much variety they offer! I not only bought some fresh produce at great prices but also grabbed some foludeh (middle eastern vegan ice cream)! I also saw that they had nuts and snacks that you rarely find at large grocery stores from smaller companies. Joe welcomed me graciously and even offered me an orange to try on my way out. Windmill Farms and Produce is a hidden gem in San Ramon. They are located across the street from In & Out Burgers. Windmill Farms and Produce has the best selection of unique and fun pumpkins! We picked up a beautiful large Cinderella pumpkin that was a light grey color for $10 as well as Honeycrisp apples for $1.99 a pound. They also have goats, sheep and chickens available to feed. A bag of feed can be purchased at the register for $1.00 per bag. This is only done during Halloween time unfortunately. Bounce houses are available for jumping as well for kids. Be sure to Sign the waiver at the register. Windmill Farms has a great selection of local produce, fresh pies, pastas, jams and of course pumpkins. So glad we stopped by while we were just driving around after dinner and I thought "oh, I'll just grab a few things if there's anything that catches my eye or maybe they'll have good corn on the cob" But then I found myself grabbing so much of their delicious looking and very inexpensive produce. And I have never seen a spaghetti squash as big in any store as I did here. And I think next time I'll try some of the many different jams they have! I visited the market on Sat. Jan 9th and was excited to support a small family owned business. I returned on Tuesday 1/12; driving from my home in Oakland to purchase almond wood and a few more produce only to be racially profiled and followed around the organic section. My heart sank, as yet again the color of my skin determines my character, based on lies that all people of color are thieves or dishonest in some way. I'm particularly sensitive given the hate in our country. I'm so tired. I called the market from my car to express my sadness and hurt. There are lows that one reaches in order to get the good stuff. Lows like searching out trucks on the side of the road in some of the not so nice parts of Oakland. Just to scope out the most perfect.......seeded Watermelon. Yes, I have a problem. I only eat Watermelons with seeds. Wake up people!!! Seedless Watermelon is disgusting! It has no flavor, its way to expensive. AND YOU CANT FIND SEEDED WATERMELON ANYWHERE!!!!!!! It just so happened I needed Bananas. As I headed for the Bananas I stopped and as my eyes were filled with the emerald light beaming off the skins of the biggest bin of seeded Watermelons I have yet to see since I was a small girl. I walked over and rubbed their round hides under my hands. Unconsciously, I started doing my "Sugar Test" for ripeness. It consists of slapping the fruit with a hallow thud of your palm. I was the only person in this fruit stand today, and I was smacking the Watermelons. They had two sizes, Large and single serving. Because I'm the only Watermelon lover in my house I had to go with the small size. I was so inspired by the fruit my husband and I invented a new cocktail that night. It may already be taken but I took cubes of the Watermelon and "muddled" them in the bottom of a glass. Add vodka then white grapefruit juice. I call it the Gray Fox. Its a Grayhound with Watermelon. The fox being the red Watermelon in the drink. Its so good. Windmill Farms have totally redeemed themselves. I also saw the sign for the petting zoo for Halloween. Now this is how a produce stand should be set up. It is clean, well maintained and the choices of seasonal produce are spectacular if not overwhelming. I literally bought more than I could use for the week but I just couldn't help it, everything was so enticing. To secure the solid fifth star, it shares a huge gravel parking lot with the Outpost, a local dive bar. My first experience at Windmill Farms was not cool, but there's no point rehashing the past. I've been several times since that first experience and I am glad I gave this place a second chance. The fruits and vegetables aren't always the prettiest, but you know what? They are all natural, locally grown. You want pretty lemons go to Safeway. And, this place has a following. There isn't one time I've been here that the place isn't well populated with patrons. Did I tell you you can get other things here besides produce? They also have a section dedicated to local wines, olives oils and vinegars. They also have a selection of cheeses, frozen foods...I could go on. In short they don't just sell produce. I have been coming to this produce market for 15 years. They always have the vegetables that your looking for that the supermarkets don't have. Windmill Farms is only open about 10 months out of the year they close in December through February. It's semi outdoor but they also have refrigerated cases inside. Cash or Debt only. read more

Positive: friendly staff, variety of fruits, veggies, jams, pies, wine.. Anything you can think of that's local and small business. Love the open "farmers market" sort of vibe. Stopped by Windmill Farms this week, 5-15-15, when I noticed that fresh homemade pies were there; I bought two, one cherry and one nectarine. Have not opened the nectarine but we have started on the cherry. The pie is wonderful; thick crust and very tasty filling. The cost per pie was $12.99. We had the second pie on Sunday, 5-17-15, the nectarine, and it, too, was very good. Not sweet nor tart but it was just right in taste. read more

This produce store goes out of it's way to make your visit special - and to lure you away from the produce sections of Lucky's and Safeway, That's not an easy task. Visit. You'll be glad you did. They keep it real with friendly help - and by adding special touches - such as having ponies for the kids to ride or by having petting-zoos/feeding-zoos for people of all ages to enjoy. Windmill also has more product variety than it's competitors. I'm guessing but I figure they sell 40 different brands of honey, If you haven't petted a pony or a lamb in a while - plan on doing that as part of your next trip. Ponies are stress relieving and affectionate animals - they have BIG amazing eyes. Petting a pony is a lot more fun than petting a dog. I donnn- know - but to me it's a weird to see parents put their kids on a pony without first connecting and being sweet to the animal. And then having their kids do the same. How long have we been living in this area and not going to this place? Too long! Every time we drove by, we told ourselves we had to come and try it. And then we would forget and go to our usual shopping haunts. Until last weekend. Place was much bigger than expected. Far more produce and even quite a number of usual grocery items. We didn't quite find everything we would have going to Sprouts, but it was pretty darn close. Including bread, milk, and cheese. Mind you, that there isn't much choice for those types of items, particularly dairy. And they were definitely pricier than a normal grocery store (they mostly carried organic specialty stuff including raw milk!). But you will more than make up for the cost by not buying items you don't really need. We walked out with a full week's grocery supplies of fruit, vegetables, and basics for nearly less than half the amount we spend at Sprouts. Granted, that doesn't include items like cereal, which they don't really carry. They also don't really carry any meat (I didn't look hard for it though as we are almost meatless). They did have some tofu and similar items in their refrigerated section. Some bulk items, and some higher priced specialty items like fancy jams. I was finally able to buy my fitness bread that I was looking for! Sprouts doesn't carry this and I couldn't find it at Safeway last time I looked (although I have seen it there before). Lots of choices for fruits and vegetables, which was to be expected. Andy why we came. A great option for getting fresh produce. A surprisingly decent option for full grocery needs. You won't find everything, but it works for a week here or there. read more

I moved to San Ramon in 1990 and started a young family. EVERY year we bought a Christmas tree from your lot. The trees have always been fresh and affordable! The food....best vegetables to purchase outside of Whole Foods or farmers market on Saturdays in Danville. I'm glad the county was unsuccessful in their attempts to close them down and back door sell property to someone interested in profiting. The community came together!
