Michael responded to my Yelp request for an estimate to replace our exterior back door. We set an…read moreappointment time, and he came out to inspect the project area and calculate the cost. Michael is very pleasant to work with. My wife and I felt very comfortable choosing him due to his positive attitude, his professionalism and the fact that he really listened to our needs and expectations. We explained that our primary concerns were making sure that the door was properly sealed so that there were no air gaps or places where water could penetrate. I know that some people will read that and think, "Well of course that was your expectation, those points are a given", but stop and think - do you really believe that every handyman takes the time to do a thorough job? They don't. Some do the bare minimum, and often charge you above market price for their shoddy work. Michael@Legit Handyman is the opposite of the "turn and burn Chuck with a truck". He is kind, thorough, and reasonably priced. He takes the time to fix things that were not done properly previously, like sealing unseen areas behind the trim. Another important point is that he doesn't bid on projects that are not his specialty. He doesn't "fake it to make it". If he is not sure that he can leave you satisfied that you got a great value for his service, he will tell you that the project is not something he is comfortable with. We appreciate his honesty and integrity! That said, there are MANY projects that he is comfortable with, and after seeing the quality of his work, we scheduled other work. Again, Michael impressed us with his skill, professionalism, price and kindness. We have scheduled a third project with him. My family really likes Michael. Even though he has customers to get to, he takes the time to talk to our autistic son about the projects. Our son thinks Michael is amazing, and my wife and I agree. I very highly recommend Michael@Legit Handyman. He does amazing work for a great price.

Hired Alan to replace a 15 year old Fence. Told him to get a building permit incorporating the…read morecodes for fencing in Rockwall. The permit clearly states on the first page all fencing in Rockwall have to be made out of Cedar. I thought the contract was for Cedar, but the fence was constructed in Pine. It was a lousy job and I only discovered it was Pine when a contractor friend of mine told me it was Pine. He had an inspector who gave a passing inspection. When I found out that the fence was not in compliance with the city code, I had another inspection done and the work failed the final inspection. I asked him to redo the fence, or refund my money, which he declined. I paid a significant amount of the fee by check and quite a bit with a bank credit card. I challenged the credit card payment and sent information and evidence of the problem and they found in my favor and refunded the amount back to me. I have been trying to find him to serve legal papers. He is avoiding all contact. Three fencing companies have stated, It was a job that should have been replaced. He signed the building permit where it clearly states the fencing needed to be Cedar.

I first want to state this review is only a reflection of the most recent job. We hired Alan in…read morethe past to repair our chimney and he did a great job. In that regard, I would say Alan is capable of some jobs. In my opinion Alan may have tried to tackle this job on his own, as he is a very hard worker, but the lack of experience more than likely cost him. We were quoted a fair price to lay a concrete slab for a 10x7 shed. Originally, I asked for a 10x7 slab, he quoted me a 10x10 with a ramp, along with building the pre-fab shed. We felt it was a fair price, so we hired him. Alan came out, set up the framework for the slab on day 1. The next day and several hours into the job and a lot of frustration they ran out of concrete, it was hardening too fast, and they couldn't get it to spread or level. I thought he abandoned it because he left without word. Later in the day 2 gentlemen showed up and we received a text from Alan that he was sending professional concrete persons to fix and complete the job. They worked tirelessly after working on other jobs all day, to finish this one before dark. They were to come back and do the ramp on another day. While thinking about it, I double checked the specs of our shed, although it said 10x7 on the box, it was 10 feet 7 inches wide. For a contractor that has put many of these together why didn't he suggest we go a bit larger on each side? Rather than 10x10 it would have made more sense to go 11x8. We paid the concrete guys to add another foot, which they did, and it looks great and level. They completed the ramp as well, doing an amazing job. Next was the building of the shed. My husband was home at the time, and it is a good thing as Alan had to borrow a ladder and tools. Although he claims to have put this same shed together multiple times it was clear he wasn't following the instructions. My husband had to help him with some parts of it that required 2 men. I told Alan it would require 2 men to do this, but he tackled the job solo. When he finished that evening, he handed my husband a bag of screws (about 100). He said they were extra. The next day my husband found all but 9 places for those "extra" screws, some in crucial areas securing the roof. He also noticed the shed wasn't square with the house, so he moved the shed, and realized the concrete was not squared properly with the house, so the shed sits on a crooked slab. While trying to slide the door closed, I noticed it was very wobbly and didn't rest flat against the shed, allowing critters like snakes to be able to get inside. My husband investigated and found he did not mount the brackets to the concrete at all and did not have them placed properly. My husband is correcting that as well as anchoring the floor to the concrete. Alan wanted to charge us extra to do that, it wasn't included in the price. My husband knew he couldn't do this job alone, this is why we hired someone we thought would get it done well. We had a bid by another person for the same amount, but since Alan had previously done work for us, he won the job. I failed to mention at last minute Alan went to rent a gas concrete buggy, which when loaded with cement is very heavy. He drove his equipment through our yard and neighbor's yard as well without permission. We also had to purchase bags of topsoil to repair the ruts in our yard that he left behind, as well as lay soil around the foundation of slab. He finally came to repair the ruts in neighbor's yard but all he did was throw fertilizer in the ruts, which my neighbor picked out with a shovel. Why would you fix ruts this way, no soil? Alan is a hard worker, but if you choose to hire him make sure that he can show you work he has previously done, so that you know you are getting what you pay for. We learned a valuable lesson and are fortunate that my husband is capable of handy work to remedy the issues, he just couldn't take on this job alone. In our opinion he should stick to handy man work, not larger jobs such as this.
