World Geography Trivia Time! It's just one of three countries in the world that's surrounded by another country (Italy). It's the fifth smallest country in the world, and measures just 24 square miles in size. It was named after a stone mason who helped rebuild one of its cities after pirates destroyed it. Answer -Welcome to San Marino. Now what all of that Jeopardy worthy trivia has to do with Windsor, CT is anyone's guess, but it seemed like a fun way to start my review of the San Marino. The Windsor version of San Marino is definitely a higher end place than most other restaurants in the 06095 Zip code. You'll see white tablecloths, and servers wearing black pants and burgundy long sleeve button down shirts. Our meal started off great with an outrageous twist on complimentary dinner rolls. They were lathered in an oily, garlicky, buttery, cheesy glaze that was fantastic. We ordered four things from the lunch - a $4.68 House Salad, a $6.76 Arugula Salad, a $13 lunch sized meat lasagna, and a $9.88 order of Mussels Fra Diavlo. My Arugula salad was pretty good - the menu describes it as "Tender arugula, chopped red onions, cherry tomatoes in olive oil lemon dressing". It just seemed to me that at nearly $8 it was overpriced and not the best value on the menu. I love Mussels and love Mussels Fra Diavlo even more, so when I saw them on the menu for a pretty good price, I was all in. The menu described the dish as "Sauteed fresh black mussels with garlic, fresh basil in a light spicy marinara sauce". It turned out to be a good decision to order them. The portion size was fine, and the thing that really impressed me were the mussels themselves! Every shell had opened to reveal huge and plump and juicy prizes. Sometimes when I order this dish, the sauce is better than the mussels because the mussels are puny or chewy, but not here. The sauce was fine, although since the Diavlo in Fra Diavlo translates into Lord Beezlebub himself, I would have liked a bit more Scovilles in the sauce. The dish was also served with a big giant crouton (not sure if it was bread or polenta) at the bottom of the dish that was a nice touch. My wife liked her lasagna and said it had plenty of cheese and meat, although it was a decidedly lunch sized portion. Ralph, our server, was a professional Continental gentleman and was helpful, non-intrusive, and checked back a few times. Bottom line was we had an enjoyable $36 lunch with good food and good service in a fairly spiffy place. read more

This is a wonderful addition to Windsor CT. I wish they were in Bloomfield CT. We arrived to find that the decor was simple but elegant. The wait staff was attentive and their service was great. The food was amazing! My salmon was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. The risotto was flavorful as was the pesto Brussels sprouts! For an appetizer my husband and I shared the wedge salad which was made from romaine lettuce a great adaptation to iceberg lettuce. After eating I had to try the dessert of carrot cake- also flavorful and delicious! We were provided with a sample of restaurant made licorice liquor which was a fabulous way to end a perfect evening! It was our first time dining at a restaurant in Windsor, and Windsor Steak & Seafood honestly blew us away! First of all, the rolls that were brought to the table were amazing! Super garlicky, with a little bit of what I think was a red pepper kick - so good! My fiancé loved his raspberry mule, and I really enjoyed the mocktail they made me. Appetizers of the calamari and meatballs were both good. The NY strip was a great medium rare, and the presentation on the nice board was so nice. My linguine with clams was delicious too. The tiramisu seemed to still be a bit frozen, but I could tell it was homemade. The waitstaff and kitchen staff are both to be commended for how quickly everything came out, without us feeling like we were rushed. I couldn't believe we were done in under an hour! If I had to note one area of improvement, it would be the ambiance. I do feel like the lighting was a little harsh, and the dining area could be made to feel a bit cozier. If I'm in Windsor again, I will absolutely keep this restaurant in mind! read more

We decided to try a new spot and liked it. We came early (5:00) on a Friday and were seated right away. We kept it simple and both ordered the bone-in ribeye from the menu (not to be confused with the special that was also a bone-on ribeye but "prime" for a smaller cut at the same price as menu item). We chose the regular version because it was prepared with a peppercorn sauce. They first brought out what I assume was their signature bread. Served in a bowl with with tomato sauce and shredded cheese and in an oil and seasoned dip of sorts. Very tasty and unique. We had to cut the bread with fork and knife not to get oily so sliced bread might be easier to dip! Still, it was good. We had no appetizers but when the steaks came out we were glad because they were large (24 oz with bone) and had a double scoop of masked potatoes and a fresh and yummy vegetable medley. I'm glad we didn't have to choose sides; only came as presented and the steak, potatoes and veggies were all very good. Both our steaks were cooked exactly as ordered) medium. They were tender with an excellent grilled flavor and sear. The mushrooms and peppercorn sauce made it for me! Great flavor and avoided dry steak syndrome. Our server was efficient and friendly although it took a little while to get our check and she wasn't too sure about the special details but checked fir us. Small but cute restaurant and seems well managed. The dining area filled while we were eating and the bar area had 4 high tops that were full and a small number of bar seats also full. Our steaks were $44 so not cheap but comes with 2 sides (but no salad). I'd like to come back and try their rack of Lomb. Overall the menu was diverse with great options! Good spot, good food and service but slightly pricier than average. We both took home a little of our steaks they were that big! read more

Service was great and the restaurant would be great for an intimate dinner or small group. Only complaint is regarding the carrot cake. Visited for Thanksgiving, and presented to us was an attractive dining room and bar. Nothing is like being at home on Thanksgiving (with all the homemade food and smells that go along with it), obviously. The food was tasty, however. For $25, we enjoyed light and dark meat turkey, gravy, candied yams, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes. Corn, my favorite vegetable (or one more of any vegetable), would have made it more complete. Fresh fruit was also served with dinner, which was a nice touch. While $25 isn't an astronomical price, a piece of pie included would have been nice. They did include an interesting digestif...a sampling of their homemade Sambuca, which would have been more appreciated if any of us liked Sambuca. read more

I'm from New York and this is absolutely the best pasta I've ever had. I was debating between the lobster and scallops, and am glad that I ordered this. I ordered the penne with shrimp and scallops and I was amazed. It came out steaming hot but everything was cooked perfectly. The scallops were so easy to bite into-they melt in your mouth. The shrimps were jumbo and easy to pull out of the shell. The sauce is salty, garlicky, and leaves you wanting more. It's been about a year since we've been back to Windsor Steak & Seafood and the food was even better than we remembered it to be, and it was excellent before! The food was phenomenal last night, both in presentation and taste and service was outstanding. Hot homemade rolls slathered with parmesan and a light coating of marinara were brought to table, and we happily obliged. We also ordered a French Onion soup, Caprese salad and shrimp cocktail as appetizers with Linguine Vongole, Fettuccine Carbonara and 14 oz. NY Strip as entrees. We finished our meal with a slice of Key Lime Pie and Carrot Cake - heavenly! Every last item was fantastic! Prices are more than reasonable considering the portions you receive. Blue cheese crumbles, bacon and chopped tomatoes over romaine lettuce a nice alternative to standard iceberg without being overwhelming. I ordered the veal piccata. Good job but would've preferred more garlic and capers but my fault for not asking. Piccata sauce just needed a little more reduction tone perfect. Went there for a company dinner. Served beer in a chipped glass, ignored my request for dairy free sauce and dressing. They corrected the order later but I had lost appetite already. Needless to say, the food was not very tasty and different than what I am used to, e.g. the mahi was extra saucy and a bit under cooked. I will go back for another look in a month or two. read more

Typically, WSS is a reliable restaurant for a quality meal in our town. We have ordered take out five or six times in the past three years and have usually found the dishes to be tasty and worth the price. However, we were a bit disappointed with the broiled lobster tail and scallops entree we got delivered last night. The lobster tail had an odd texture - soft and mealy, it crumbled in the mouth and did not have a firm, springy texture that is usually present in lobster dishes. It also tasted quite bland. The scallops tasted normal, and the two other entrees we ordered (lobster ravioli, linguine with broccoli rabe and sausage) were good. But at $55 the lobster tail entree was a real dud. read more

I stopped by here a couple of Thursday nights ago for dinner and arrived around 7 pm. Upon entering I was immediately greeted by the hostess and led to a table. The inside of The San Merino felt upscale with the wood floors and white table cloth covered tables. Yes there was white paper on top of the tablecloths but it blended in nicely. The artwork on the walls was minimal but there were a few pieces which helped it to feel classy. Other than the dining room which I was in there was a bar area and I think an outside dining area as well although I only noticed it while leaving. For dinner on this day I decided to go with the calamari piccata for my appetizer and then went with the snapper franchise for my entree. In between ordering and any food coming to the table, the bread basket was delivered. While I normally don't mention it, the basket here was worth mentioning. The bread itself was piping hot and covered in marinara and Parmesan. So no only was the temperature of it amazing but it tasted good too! Anyways the calamari came out fairly soon after that and was described by the menu as Wild caught crispy calamari tossed in garlic caper lemon white wine sauce. The calamari ended up being cooked alright with some of the pieces being a bit more rubbery than the others. Then some had a full amount of breading while others seemed to have lost their breading, probably due to the sauce. It all came over a bed of lettuce which ended up being sort of weird because whenever I got down to it, it was swimming in the picatta sauce. With all of that being said, it still tasted pretty good and I enjoyed the acidic sauce paired with the salty capers and all of the calamari. After finishing the appetizer there was a bit of a wait before my snapper entree came out. The menu described my dish as Fresh filet of red snapper dipped in egg in a lemon butter white wine sauce over a bed of spinach. Whenever it came out I was surprised at how much the fish dominated the dish and how it truly did come only on a bed of spinach. The sauce ended up covering the dish and spinach which was a shame in this instance as it meant that I was eating quite soggy breaded fish. I think they would have done better to serve it on the side and leave everything crispy. However, the flavors here were still good as the sauce was pretty much the same as the piccata mentioned earlier and then the fish was flaky with a mild sweetness to it. After the entree was cleared from the table I was given a complimentary Sambuca. Even though anise flavor isn't generally my thing I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly rewarded with only a light anise flavor at the start and a finishing flavor of coffee. It was good and if I hadn't had been so full I probably would have had more of it than I did. The bottom line for me is that I would head back to The San Marino. While I thought that some of the technical portions of my dishes missed the mark (sauce over breading and missing breading),the flavors were good, the prices reasonable and I loved the complimentary bread basket and Sambuca. read more

Had heard a great deal about this relatively new restaurant (mostly very good reviews) and was excited to try lunch here with a friend. Our server, Frank, was efficient and knowledgeable. The rolls are nice and warm, and coated with olive oil and garlic...a different touch and very tasty. My friend ordered veal parm, I saw veal marsala on the menu, but asked for chicken marsala, which they were able to accommodate. Both of us thought the meal was good. Couple of reasons for the mediocre rating. First, the lunch entrée did not come with a choice of soup or salad. They were available, but for an extra charge. For most of the Italian restaurants that I patronize (and rated), soup or salad is included. Second, although the marsala sauce was very good, my chicken was slightly undercooked to the point where I should have sent it back. I didn't, which is on me. Third and fourth...the wait time from order to receipt of meal was a bit longer than expected, and the prices are also a bit high compared to other comparable restaurants, in my opinion. On the positive side, the ambience, décor, and overall "feel" of the restaurant is excellent, and they had plenty of servers. read more

Went last night for the first time. My wife and I enjoyed our apps, I had the lobster bisque and she had the broccoli rob with sausage. Both were excellent. We also both had drinks and we enjoyed them. Our main courses were cooked well and I thoroughly enjoyed my shrimp and scallops over penne with vodka sauce. My wife had the shrimp scampi and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Her only complaint was she wished the meal had more sauce for the pasta. Overall, great service and food. Horrible, I will be posting the pictures on Google reviews, trip finder & yelp. I ordered the Fettuccine Carbonara & a carrot cake for take out. All though they were quick (10 minutes) & welcoming, the main course was horrible. The Carbonara had onions the size of my fork & they were crunchy... now i like onions, but maybe instead of getting my order done in 10 minutes take an extra 5 minutes & dice your onions & perhaps fry them until they are at least translucent & soft. The pasta itself was al dente & they provide a lot of panchetta (if i could have tasted anything but the first large raw onion i had in my first bite). They do NOT include a salad (or i wasn't provided one) & the 1 roll i was provided was definitely nuked because it was also inediable (hard & rubbery). As for the carrot cake it was ok but for close to 7 dollars a slice it does not compare to the others in town. It is a very small slice & only 2 small layers, and covered in what i think was carmel?? For $27.11 (no drinks, no appetizers, nothing else but what i stated above) I would have expected so much more then i received. At the very least diced onions & starter salad! I'm very disappointed since this restaurant is literally 2 blocks away & I love supporting my local town businesses having been a resident for 30+ years. But if they cannot get a simple recipe like Fettuccine Carbonara correct I couldn't justify trying something more complicated.... read more

I've lived here almost 30 years and have never been to this restaurant. My husband and I stopped in for a glass of wine and a couple of appetizers and let me tell you they were superb. The service was exceptional. The food quality wonderful and the portions on the appetizers were so generous. We didn't even need a meal.
